The Twilight Saga: New Moon
PG-13
It's very easy to despise the Twilight franchise based solely on its fanbase, not to mention the fact that the books, while enjoyable, are a blatant hybrid of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, True Blood and Underworld. However, if one goes to see The Twilight Saga: New Moon knowing exactly what it is, namely a teen-oriented vampire soap opera with no bigger aspirations, it becomes easier to realize it's not as bad as most people would have you believe.
Sure, the "screaming teenage girl" factor is present, with gratuitous slow-motion shots of Robert Pattinson and people who take their shirt off for the silliest reasons, but there are good things too: the visual effects have improved a lot compared to the first installment, Kristen Stewart proves she is a talented young actress and not just "that girl from Twilight", new director Chris Weitz handles the high school angle with a healthy dose of irony and the new villains (Michael Sheen and Dakota Fanning) are terrific.
Bottom line: best movie of the year? Hell, no. A silly but entertaining film to watch if there's nothing better on offer? That's more like it.

Despite its dark tone, it's one of the funniest movies ever. A brilliant debut for Sam Mendes, and Kevin Spacey totally deserved the Oscar.
