It Could Happen to You - PG
"A promise is a promise." A sweet and uplifting film made to make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Which it does. Loved Nic Cage and Bridget Fonda together, and was surprised at the twist at the end too. Lovely film which, if you let it, could restore your faith in humanity!

Capote - R
"Ever since I was a child, folks have thought they had me pegged, because of the way I am, the way I talk. And they're always wrong." This film will always be commended for Philip Seymour Hoffman's portrayal of Truman Capote, and he really does do an impeccable job so that it's more a disappearance into the man rather than an imitation. He captures his voice and gestures brilliantly, and it really is a treat to watch. I didn't particularly like Truman Capote after watching this film - although it's very much centered around the story of the two men who murdered a family 'In Cold Blood', as the title of Capote's book later suggests, and is focussed less so on a biographical account of Capote's life, we do see a lot of his character revealed through how he deals with this situation. They created a very honest depiction of the man, showing how self-absorbed he predominantly was, to the extent of wanting to exploit this story and the murderers for his own ends. He clearly does feel something for Perry Smith by the end of it, but his motives were still essentially selfish, and so I couldn't come out of the film feeling very fond of Capote. Nevertheless, this probably wasn't their intention or else they would have portrayed him through a rose-tinted lens - and it really is a brilliant film; perhaps a bit slow for some people, but I was gripped from beginning to end. Worth watching for the brilliant performances if anything.

Funny Face - Unrated
"Every girl on every page of Quality has grace, elegance, and pizzazz. Now what's wrong with bringing out a girl who has character, spirit, and intelligence?" Probably my least favourite Audrey Hepburn film so far - this just didn't work for me. First of all, I felt it was miscast - Audrey Hepburn's face is far from funny - she's beautiful - and although Fred Astaire might be a brilliant dancer, I don't feel he's that good an actor. I suppose this is what's expected from the Studio System back in the 50s, but it really made me like the characters less. They seem to fall in love with each other for no other reason than it's what the producers wanted, and so the romance seems forced rather than real. I also didn't enjoy the songs or dances. They seemed pointless, and much too long - as if they were put there just to show off the skills of the two leads, instead of to add anything more to the story. I usually like musicals of this period, but the songs here just didn't impress - probably because they were just a bit random; plonked in without driving the story forwards. I love Audrey Hepburn, so I was a little disappointed. But I'm sure it'll stil be a film that appeals to a lot of people. I just hate that her character buys into this world of fasion and 'celebrity' by the end, despite the fact that she was so against it at the start. Her poor little library, she didn't even give it a backward glance!

Armageddon - PG-13
"Houston, you have a problem. You see, I promised my little girl that I'd be comin' home. Now I don't know what you people are doing down there, but we've got a hole to dig up here!" So I finally got round to watching this apparent "classic". And although I can't say I was surprised by how the film was, I suppose I was a little disappointed. That's probably why I was disappointed - I wasn't surprised at all. It's very Michael Bay, focussing much too much on blowing things up rather than paying any attention to how the story could be rooted in reality. It's a bit too patriotic; I'm sure we see the American flag many a time throughout, and the idea of these 8 American oil drillers being humanity's only hope - well. In real life they may as well not have bothered. And fine, it's not real life, it's a film, blah blah blah - but seriously! Firstly, Bruce Willis does NOT look old enough to be Liv Tyler's dad ever, so that was weird. And the way he absolutely hates Ben Affleck's guts one minute, to the point of wanting to blow his leg off with a gun, and then all of a sudden he's calling him 'son' and they're all like 'I love you!' to each other. I suppose I would have appreciated even just a smidgeon of reality, and then maybe it wouldn't have all felt so farcical. Steve Buscemi brings some comedy to this overrated 'epic', and is perhaps the only reason to watch this film - but then even he can only do so much. And I was very disappointed with their pathetic use of Jason Isaacs. He's the one who thought of the plan - bit more screen time please! I did like Liv Tyler in this though - Michael Bay seemed to film her as though he was in love with her and he really captures her nicely. But aside from that, it's just another one of those Hollywood Blockbusters. Oh, and that asteroid was never the size of Texas.
