The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007,  R)
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Visually breathtaking, the colours the sounds so perfect. Casey Affleck just threw me with his performance, I felt sorry for him, but also a little eerie at him too, due to his characters scary lust to be near Jesse. Brad Pitt played Jesse cold and uncaring yet you could see the man was breaking. I really enjoyed the film, the story it told and how beautiful it looked.
I would love for Casey to win the oscar, but who knows?
4
Half Nelson (2006,  R)
Half Nelson
excellent film, ryan is a brilliant and diverse actor. He plays a teacher and a coach who gets ever more addicted to drugs and takes more risks, one of his students discovers him nearly oding in the bathroom and they form an odd bond..you are never sure of the boundaries of the realtionship, but the line is never crossed and it remians a friendship, if an odd one. Ryans character sees were the gilrs life is leading to, a life in drugs as a dealers mule and tries to save her. very sad and hopeful story
5
Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi) (2001,  PG)
6
Children of Men (2006,  R)
Children of Men
Amazing story, amazing acting, amazing visuals...I loved the vision of the future, it wasn't to crazy, no flying cars and that! Two scenes really stood out as brilliant for me, the escape scene from the farm when the car wouldnt start and the scene when Clive is trying to dodge the fighting in the fugee camp, to get to the girl! It felt like I was in a computer game, like gears of war! There was even blood on the camera screen! fecking brilliant, all in one shot too for a while I think, which always impresses me :D
7
Alien (1979,  R)

Once (2007,  R)
Once
An almost perfect film. Such sweet music a Dublin I remember from when I was younger, compared to what it is today. A beautiful tale, which shows we don't need those "hollywood endings" to make a film great :)

Hauru no ugoku shiro (Howl's Moving Castle)
yet again fantastic animation...to think that this kind of animation is now mainly obselete is shocking! Cute story and some very cute characters like Calcifer! Not as great as Spirited Away but LOT better and original than anything Disney has put out in... forever!!!

Junebug
I Hadn't a clue what this movie was about, but I don't think that would have mattered! I love films that are just about people and their reactions to life and just their progress in life, however long or short it is. I really loved this film and I can see myself getting it on dvd and watching it again. I loved the character of Ashley, how sweet was that girl?! go see it!!!!!

[Rec]
What a scary film! I had no idea what this film was about, only that it was a horror. Great set-up, amazing set! Some very scary scenes, especially towards the end, I was gripping my hands over my eyes!! Watch this before you see the obligatory US version.

Brick (2006,  R)
Brick
Excellent film! I dont know how to describe it, a flick with teens, but not a "teen flick" as you would think. gritty and violent..watch it!
Joseph Gordon- Levitt is brilliant as the main loner guy
22
Into the Wild (2007,  R)
Into the Wild
Filmed beautifully and a great story to follow. I was so moved so many times and did not know the ending, so I was completely unprepared and shocked. I was so upset. The last shot haunts me now and the old man asking could he adopt him. Tragic. I have read lots of nasty comments about the real guy saying he was selfish and spoiled. I don't think he was. Well I don't agree with him not telling his family he was gone, but at the same time I can understand him leaving out his parents, but not his sister. I can understand why he left all the nice people he met along the way. He had a goal! He wanted to do something, he wanted to be completely alone
to survive in the wild. Which is what makes it all the sadder, when towards the end he realizes being alone, isn't what he wants.

El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
What can I say? I loved it! It blended the harsh violence of the war and the captains brutality with the fantasies of the underworld perfectly..I loved the colour tones, the changes towards the end...perfect. The little girl who played Ofeilia was just brilliant and the man who played the Captain..very convincing evil fucker!
27
El Orfanato (The Orphanage) (2007,  R)
El Orfanato (The Orphanage)
I really enjoyed how this film used your fears from regular horror films against you, it plays the tension to perfection. A great story, cast and it looks beautiful too. Lot's of goosbumply and hide behind your hand moments. I really want to watch it again.
