    DICK TRACY (1990)
    directed by Warren Beatty
starring Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, Madonna

Dick Tracy: «Is the enemy of my enemy my friend, or is the enemy of my friend my enemy?»

    Pat Patton: «Tracy, what'd you say?»

Dick Tracy: «Or enemy of my enemy my enemy?»

    Pat Patton: «What'd he say?»

Dick Tracy: «The enemy of my enemy is my enemy.»

Sam Catchem: «He said the enemy of his enemy is his enemy.»

    Pat Patton: «Oh.»

Created back in 1931 by Chester Gould, Dick Tracy is one of the earlier comic book «superhero» to appear into the American culture. No special powers and no special costumes, except maybe his hat and suit, but his attitude was what made him special. He was smart, incoruptible and committed to his job.

In 1990, Warren Beatty decided to adapted the comic strip into a feature film. The final result is a mix betwee Tim Burton's Batman and Brian DePalma's The Untouchables.Visually speaking the film is absolutely stunning, using edgy visual effects looking half realistic and half cartoonish. Vittorio Storaro's cinematography is amazing as usual and will all those colors, he and Beatty managed to capture that comic book essence that almost no one else has, not even in the recent trend of superhero movies.

Beatty is alright as Tracy, the detective who doesnt have time for his girlfriend cause he absolutely want to catch Big Boy Caprice, the new mobster leader. He also has to look after a homeless kid he saved from an abusive man and his attraction from a beutiful lady that could help him catch the gangster.

The cast of the film is impressive, even big names play samller role. Al Pacino is amazing as the big boss, Dustin Hoffman is hilarious as Mumble, hs name says it all. Charlie Kosmo is in the right tone of annoyance as the kid and Madonna is a bit annoying but she looks good.

That film is all style over substance, but even in the comic strips Dick Tracy was never anything too complicated in terms of character study, and for that reason Beatty's film is quite faithful to the source material. Especially when comes the bad guys with those grotesque faces reminescent of the drawings in the strips.

Dick Tracy is a film that capture the comic book style perfectly, wether in its tone or in its visual qualities. I think its not for everyone's appreciation but I do dig those colors, cool settings and weird visual effects. Plus Danny Elfman's music can never hurt a film. I believe its one of the finest comic book adaptations that wasnt made in the 2000's.

One of my personal favorite comic book based films. Wont please everyone, but it sure pleases me.

Wasnt overly interested in this but was emotionally blackmailed...glad she did, I loved this film. Touching, sincere and well written. Shame about the dodgy accents in it though.
Hey, you should really see this! The wifey reads everything thats written at every given moment so when this came out on film she said that she loved it and that it would be a great movie. She was right. Genuinly good film, some tender moments, some laugh out loud and a lot of hugs...I know it would normally make me puke but you have to see this.

The introduction of the iconic man with no name saw Clint Eastwood catapulted to international stardom in this remake of Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece Yojimbo. Of course there's a certain irony in the fact that an Italian remake of a Japanese film shot in Spain would be the birth of the modern western, but the elements combine to fit the setting of the old west perfectly. The script has taken rather a trim in comparison, this film concentrating on machismo and gunplay rather than the more artful and character driven original; the result is that Eastwood's gunslinger comes across as more of a cynical operator than Mifune's aimless but moralistic samurai, and the build up has a brisk, almost rushed feel about it. But this film is all about the showdown at the end which, combined with Morricone's unforgettable score, is classic Leone.

I must admit, seeing Keanu Reeves' pretty boy look on the cover immediately made me want to watch this as much as I've always wanted to see Martha Stewart's naked body.
But since this was an '86 movie, and not a '41 ex-con's naked body, I gave it a shot.

And now I must admit, the cover is very deceiving.
This movie is definitely worth a look. It probably won't stick with you for that long, but you will not, most likely, be disappointed.

Note that, by "you", I intend to mean "person with a fairly impressive and enjoyable movie taste".
If not, feel free to let me know.

So I can feel free to remove you from my list.
Either way, we'll all feel free one way or another, so we'll all win.

    Back to the movie.
    Somewhat basic, unpretentious, unsurprising story.
But I'm not saying this as a bad thing.
    Quite the opposite, actually.
If properly achieved, this can actually be one of the greatest features a movie can offer.
And in River's Edge, this was properly achieved.

Nothing that much good to say about the acting, except that Keanu Reeves turns out to be bearable.
And except for Crispin Glover. Great role! It takes a while to get used to the character, but once you surpass that, you're in for a treat.

Apart from that... well, I guess anyone watching this will probably relate to it in some level, because pretty much everyone had an anguished teen inside of them at some point.

    Or on top of.

    Choices.

    Iron Man Iron Man
    4.0 Stars by Duncan
Other reviews I've read have been mixed, so I was worried that my eager anticipation of this movie was unwarranted. Thankfully, Iron Man turned out to be a rather enjoyable experience for me.

Robert Downey Jr. is excellent as the movie's protagonist: genius inventor and weapon's tycoon Tony Stark. He starts off as snarky and arrogant, but he undergoes a change of heart (both figuratively and literally) after he's captured by terrorists who use weapons he's manufactured to do their dastardly deeds. He escapes, thanks to a bitchin' suit of armor he built on the fly, and vows to use his technology for the betterment of mankind rather than it's destruction. He returns to America, retires to his fancy seaside condo, and begins work on a second prototype of that same suit of armor.

As I mentioned before, Downey's performance was fantastic. The supporting cast was pretty good overall as well, particularly Gwyneth Paltrow as Stark's perky assistant Pepper Potts (alliterative names are so fun, aren't they?). The only chink in the armor, as far as the cast is concerned, is Terrance Howard. He seems like he's going through the motions, like a high school freshman who doesn't want to be in the play, but his parents forced him to audition for it. His role isn't that big, thankfully, so his lackluster performance is tolerable.

My one and only gripe, and one I'll probably get flack for, is that there's not enough action. I like superhero movies with an engaging story and dynamic characters, and Iron Man's characters and plot are well rounded. But more emphasis is put on plot development than blowin' shit up, rahter than finding a balance between the two. Spider-Man and Batman Begins are movies that have successfully found this balance, which is what made them so great.

That doesn't mean Iron Man is terrible. In fact, it's far from it. The action that IS there is beautifully orchestrated, the special effects are top notch, and the script is well-written. Throw in the best cameo by Stan Lee since Mallrats, and you have yourself a great superhero movie.

Not a bad way to start the summer...
If you haven't seen it yet, and you plan on seeing it in the theater, wait through the credits. Not only will your ears be treated to Tony Iommi crankin' out sweet riffs, but there's an extra scene that'll be worth the wait...

"Let your imagination set you free," Incredible true story. Best Achievement in Cinematography, Directing, and Editing. Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Published. It started out for me very slowly, painful to watch, but what an experience, like the butterfly from the cocoon. It speeds up once the butterfly starts to stretch his wings. I thought it was very subtle and powerful. Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josée Croze, Anne Consigny, Max von Sydow & Mathieu Amalric are a powerhouse cast.
Better than I thought it would be. I know you want to see this but I thought I would let you know it is good!! For me it got better as the film progressed.

    Portray of a serial killer.
One of the most disturbed ones, even if his homicidal numbers are not quite exactly top ranked in the charts.
But that didn't keep Ed Gein from gaining reputation as one of the most deranged minds of modern time.
And one of the most notorious ones amongst his peers.

Murderer. Grave desecrator. Cannibal. Necrophilliac. Human skin stylist.
And also a God fearing boy.
    The whole package.

Inspired, among others, the serial killers in Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Silence of the Lambs, and American Psycho. Featured in several songs of more extreme bands (being Slayer's Dead Skin Mask the obvious highlight).

For all that and more, he deserves a very special place in all hearts.

The ones he didn't eat, that is.

    Now, for the movie.
Probably the best among the ones that tried to portray him. But that's not saying that this is in fact a masterpiece.
    Not really.

This is a fairly effective display of what should be a day in the life of old Theodore, but I still think it's a light one.
Nevertheless, and although I thought at first I wasn't going to give much credit to this one, it's definitely worth a look.

Because (make no mistake about it) it does in fact have a great amount of true and accurate information regarding what happened and how it happended.
I just think they should've darkened it up a little more.

Such an unsettling mind deserved that much.
