| Moon - R |
I just hate to say this...I really HATE to say this...but this was incredibly, incredibly disappointing. It has some clever ideas that get you thinking...like gerty being a computer companion and having to do counciling sessions with the main character...which has come up in science fiction before with George Lucas?s THX film in which a man goes into a booth and gets the same thing...and that idea is a very interesting one I have to say. Moon was probably more suited for a 50 minute to 60 minute film...Its very, very hard to put my finger on what it is exactly thats wrong with it...but I think its to do with the characters...I didnt feel anything when the character was upset at the big emotional climax. The music was not memorable...and thats a big problem for me too... for something thats of this style...in the quiet of space there should be music that you come away from remembering. The miniatures...theres some truly great shots in here...but i felt there wasn;t enough of them ...Ive looked at extensive photography at both Steve Howarth and Gavin Rotherys web sites is nothing short of incredible...but there didnt seem to be nearly enough of this amazing detailed work to be seen in front of the camera...some long shots would have been good.its some of the best work thats ever been made for the cinema. The editing on the interiour stuff too could have done with more long shots...there is a beautiful wide shot when Sam hears Gerty talking to the company men and he appears from round the corner to see whats going on...which I think should have been one long shot...but they edited it. Im a bit funny about that sort of thing. But at the same time I realise the time constraints they had on the miniature shoot...and I suppose it perhaps gets back to the whole thing of you cant rush art...but perhaps in order to hire the studio and its cameras you HAVE to rush it...which I feel is unfortunate...but I suppose it?s the only way these things get made. I liked the way Gerty talked to sam as well...its very simalar to the THX booth scene...and its a interesting and important statement of how computer company shouldn;t replace human company. |
