Eraser - R Slightly dated digital visual effects and not enough railgun action to satisfy my contemporary temperament. I'll make do with some Vanessa Williams, thanks. Enjoyed it more than any rebooted Bond. February 4, 2010

2012 - PG-13 Ridiculous over-the-top disaster movie bordering on implausible but fun nonetheless. Emmerich is now the Lucas equal he always wanted to be (not necessarily a compliment!) January 23, 2010

Zombieland - R If you want or need closure from an oversaturation of zombie movies, this is the one to do it. A little bit preachy but a whole lot of fun, I totally understand now why others compare it to a John Hughes movie. An interesting choice of cameo and some exposure for nostalgic pop-culture. Surrogates - PG-13 Certainly not a classic movie, but if like me you enjoy your fix between classics then you shouldn't be disappointed. It's a similar calibre movie to The 6th Day, Paycheck, I Robot. Interesting premises that are perhaps not executed with as much subtext and feeling for appropriate tone as they could be.

Watched this with my son and we both got a little confused over the whodunnit aspect and the ultimate motivation of the antagonist. But who cares, there's some good stuff peppered throughout even if the third act is ultimately a bit unemotional.

Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel - Unrated I really enjoyed this movie, however it gets a ding for being painfully un-cinematic (it looks like a TV sitcom) and a ding for a really annoying resolution after layers and layers of credible setup. I can best describe it as inspired by Back To The Future II when Marty and the Doc are running around copies of themselves and maintaining past events. All set up for a sequel (somewhat flippantly and humourously), I think there'd be a market for it. January 9, 2010

Crank 2: High Voltage - R Technically a significant movie since it was made with HD cameras bought at Best Buy. It's like George Lucas wrote a script that he thought his mate Martin Scorcese would want to direct but instead it got picked up by Benny Hill with aspirations to direct like Quentin Tarantino and John Woo. We end up with a ridiculous over the top movie with cameos from David Carradine and Geri Halliwell. Fun, but do check your brain out before you begin to watch. January 4, 2010

Inglourious Basterds - R Not a bad movie though not as unsettling as I thought perhaps it would be. Some great moments of tension. A lot of talking which doesn't always add to the tension (which is one-trick tension throughout). I would have had more respect for the Wilhelm scream in this movie if the character called Wilhelm had actually made the scream (obvious I know, but it's not like QT is known to be particularly original and subversive, it is it?!) Star Trek - PG-13 wow, really enjoyed this. although it stroked my nostalgia and has the backing of an existing franchise I'm positive this would have been a strong release even if those things did not exist. very good, and some interesting character interactions I was not expecting. Avatar - PG-13 some good 3D ambience but other than that lacking anything to make the story or characters remarkable. extra half star for not hearing the Wilhelm scream. About an hour too long, and too many of those silly little crash zooms scattered throughout. good but not great. December 20, 2009

X-Men Origins - Wolverine - PG-13 not that bad despite some shabby VFX and emotionally shallow characters. December 18, 2009

Up - PG unremarkable and a bit dull, even my kids thought this one was below average. December 5, 2009

Planet 51 - PG a bad transposition of 1950's Americana onto supposedly alien culture December 5, 2009

Paranormal Activity - R Tedious, boring, lame, anticlimactic, lazy movie. Very natural performances but very dull linear story. Go watch '70s Omen instead, that'll scare you in broad daylight and give you nightmares. November 14, 2009

9 - PG-13 Average flick with little emotional engagement inspired from me. Brilliant premise, but ultimately a largely dull and flat cartoon that takes itself very seriously. Unremarkable. Kept the kids happy. November 14, 2009

Objectified - Unrated Good summing up of design in your life, if a little dry and a little too long. Does reinforce the notion that some (by no means all) designers are self-indulgent deluded twats. November 8, 2009

Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) - R At last. A film for grown ups. September 25, 2009

District 9 - R solid but flawed. with neither a great plot nor great characters the only remarkable things are the situation and some of the weapons. not helped by some really bad acting from supporting cast. September 8, 2009

The Tenant - R September 7, 2009

The Hurt Locker - R Not a bad movie, but not great IMO. Enjoyed it more than Jar Head but think Blackhawk Down and the venerable Three Kings are better movies. Maybe I just didn't feel the tension, but then it's not like I haven't seen UXB, land mine, and sniper scenes before. The protagonist wants to be Lethal Weapon but just isn't crazy or deep enough to be convincing. September 5, 2009

Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus - R awful: Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus < Snakes on a Plane <= Mutronics. seriously, it's bad bad and I don't remember Debbie Gibson's nose looking so weird in profile back in the late eighties. Extra half star for silly in-jokes. August 19, 2009

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra - PG-13 It's X-men meets James Bond (when they let him have gadgets) with a small dash of Star Wars prequel (not enough to sour). If this had old school Bond running around in it I would've enjoyed it even more. But, at least Paris got wrecked :-) August 17, 2009

Visioneers - Unrated Slightly above average typical tale of dealing with a mid-life crisis whilst in fulltime employment. Kind of a cross between Reggie Perrin and Brazil. Slow pace, ulitmately nothing new to say. July 24, 2009

Moon - R Toneless, obvious, and unchallenging. Really bad choice of piano soundtrack. July 23, 2009
