Earth (Disneynature's Earth) (Planet Earth) - G Visually spectacular, educational, funny, tragic, awesome. Plus James Earl Jones.

There was some eye-rolling when we chose this for family movie night, but in the end everyone was a convert. Great movie.

Gran Torino - R What an absolute gem of a movie. I waited forever to see this, waiting for an evening where I could tolerate a Million Dollar Baby-type downer. But it wasn't like that at all.

This is a beautiful movie, demonstrating again that Clint Eastwood is an artist. If you're one of the other 5 people who haven't seen it yet, you should.

Rachel Getting Married - R A meditation on real life, and what it boils down to - family, as fucked up and broken as it often is. A truly powerful and provocative film, incredibly well written, acted, directed and scored.

See this one if you haven't. It's dark and uncomfortable in spots, but stepping back it shows the depth of the love that binds us to the people we come from, marry, and make.

Defiance - R This was just a great movie, echos of Outlaw Josie Wales for me (high praise.) Interesting characters and an incredible real life war story. Managed to avoid all but a few of the war movie cliches, but Craig is brilliant, and Liev Schreiber perhaps even more so. Nice to see Jews kicking some Nazi ass, in some bizarre way. July 18, 2009

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - PG-13 I was surprised at how good this film was. Had heard mixed things, but thought it was both a great and worthwhile story. I strongly recommend seeing it, if you're one of the other 6 people who haven't. July 18, 2009

Zack and Miri Make a Porno - R Had to be easy to pitch this one... "It's a romantic comedy for the ladies, with plenty of porn for the boys!"

Light and likeable, not as funny as 40YOV or SuperBad, but nice heart, good dialog. Plus 2 porn stars and a penis. Sign me up.

Smart People - R I liked this movie, more than most it seems. Does a great job on mood, Dennis Quaid is great, and so is Ellen Page. Perfectly captures the irony of how many "smart people" are disconnected from the truth of themselves and their own lives.

Better than your average romantic comedy, worse than your average film festival indie flick... but overall, worth watching.

Mamma Mia! - PG-13 Can you give something negative stars? Honestly?

I like Abba. That's right, I said it.

But if I were locked in a box, buried deep beneath the earth's surface for an extended period of time, with this movie as my sole source of light and hope, I would shut off the TV.

Awful does not begin to capture this blight on the face of humanity.

This is not a good movie, is what I'm trying to say. Shockingly, un-good.
