Star Wars: The Clone Wars
by JensThe pilot for the upcoming computer animated Star Wars series about the Clone Wars between Episode 2 and 3 is actually a lot more fun than the first reviews made everyone believe. If you're a fan, that is. Everyone else has every right to ignore this movie. But people enjoying to hear more stories from George Lucas' universe far far away that haven't been told yet could really get a kick out of this. The animation is simplistic on purpose, there aren't many facial expressions, the soundtrack reprises some of John Williams' scores but also sounds a bit too modern at times and some of the dialoges are rather weak. On the other hand, there is so much action, basically non-stop, and that's just pretty damn fun to watch, bringing Jabba The Hutt into play actually brings a nice feeling of familiarity into the film. It's no outstanding movie making, but I had a good time with this and am looking forward to the show. Okay, half a star comes from fanboy me. Sue me.
Hey, you should really see this if you like Star Wars, the cartoon show, expanded universe and especially the prequels.

Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others)
by JensGermany's latest Oscar winner for best foreign film, having snatched it from Pan's labyrinth, truly lives up to all the praise it received. The acting is outstanding (especially the late Ulrich Mühe, but also Sebastian Koch and Ulrich Tukur), the script sincere, intelligent and thrilling, portraying a realistic DDR regime of the 1980s and how it kept an eye on its people's private lives. The filming and editing is top notch as well, especially the exciting second half is brilliant. It's a slow movie and requires concentration and an interest for the politics of this time from the audience. The result is extremely rewarding though. One of the strongest German movies.
Hey, you should really see this if you like intelligent, thought-provoking and realistic film making.
