Bitter Moon - R Good old Hughie actually has done something else than just romantic comedies. Here he skillfully looks puzzled most of the time.
The movie otherwise is over 2 hours and I, as usual, complain about it. I would bet that it is not just because I've been up for the whole night that I just blankly stared at the screen and couldn't care less what happened to the characters. Mimi was quite annoying and Emmanuelle Seigner certainly was not chosen because of her acting skills.
This one is also inspired by a book. I hear Polanski is now doing a movie of a book I read just last Summer. Does he actually do movies that are NOT based on books? The Pianist is, this one is, Rosemary's Baby is, the upcoming is...

Brazil - R I found it hard to concentrate on what was happening. And it's two and a half hours so I had to pause quite a few times. Very much not my type of a movie. The letters M-O-I on the walls were rather amusing, though. December 5, 2009

Manhunter - R First of all: this one is clearly better than Red Dragon from 2002. However, I like better the Reba and Hannibal of the newer version. Tooth Fairy, then, is a lot more believable than Ralph Fiennes was. Fiennes was interpreted to be muscular and handsome with only minor physical flaws, whereas Tom Noonan is very tall, almost bald and seemingly awkward. Also Graham is better portrayed by William Petersen than Edward Norton.
MH is not as true to the book as RD is and the plot has been simplified by leaving things out, such as Tooth Fairys relationship with his dead grandmother. That's good because it didn't work in RD. The ending is also simplified and the last twist has been left out. This makes Tooth Fairy less intelligent and cunning than in the book.
All in all, I'd rather recommend this one to those who have not read the book than Red Dragon. It's very 80s (the soundtrack especially) but it works.

Paranormal Activity - R Half of it: boring. Second half: waiting for something cool to happen. But no. The ending was the only scene that offered a slight chance to get scared and even that was done cheaply by throwing things (or people) at the camera. Also, Morrissey's Ouija Board, Ouija Board kept playing in my head. December 4, 2009

The Last King of Scotland - R Idi Amin finds a friend and goes paranoid. Still, the main storyline is about the Scottish young doctor who leaves Scotland behind and finds himself in Uganda. And his survival gets a lot more important than of those 300 000 Ugandans. Acting is good though. December 2, 2009

Equilibrium - R First of all, i feel kinda ripped off. I wrote a short story about a society like this years ago! Well, not before 2002 but anyway.
I couldn't help but laugh at the action scenes. The plot is predictable, even though some twists are added to make it seemingly more complicated - or just to enable more action scenes.

Four Weddings and a Funeral - R This is the most pathetic romatic comedy I've seen in ages. It's so dated that it hurts to watch their clothes. And the romance part could as well be the comedy. Can't understand the classic status - unless it's because the movie is so poor. November 22, 2009

Elizabethtown - PG-13 Predictable good old romantic drama/comedy. I wonder why people don't do feel bad movies instead of these wannabe feel goods? November 21, 2009

Breakfast at Tiffany's - Unrated And the fuzz is because...? I hope not for the humour. Well, it has THE Audrey Hepburn that everyone likes for some reason. Can't even figure much to say about the movie. I didn't like it and most probably won't watch ever again. November 20, 2009

Rosemary's Baby - R Read the book 3 years ago and wasn't too impressed. The film is, as much as I remember, very true to the book so I didn't get surprised at all. When the back cover already reveals that yes she is having the Satan's child, it takes the whole point out of making it look like she's just delusional. Now when it was revealed that it was all true, I couldn't help but laugh aloud. Don't know was it really scary back then but in the 2000s it's very corny to sell your unborn child to Satan to get rich and famous. And I also hate that Polanski seems to get all the credit for the story when, once again, it is based on an existing book. Happens a lot (Fight Club, anyone?) The film did not make me think about the subject very much - unlike the book. November 20, 2009

La Repetition - Unrated Because of various reasons, I had to watch this film in three parts. I had only little interest on the characters and the plot never seems to go anywhere. Some, or many, scenes were also annoying because the characters were only walking in circles or something which is VERY uninteresting. November 20, 2009

Letters to Father Jacob (Postia pappi Jaakobille) - Unrated I might have never been this close to tears in a public place. The elderly women around me were too. The film is simple and short but it succeeds in telling a touching and humane story. Very good to be Finnish. November 17, 2009

Into the Wild - R A man abandons everything and everyone and heads to Alaska. I couldn't do that, so I've got to respect him. However, as it turns out eventually, neither could he. The movie pictures "Alex Supertramp" as an idealistic individual who does what he wants, although it isn't very surprising that in the end he finds himself lonely after seeing many others wandering in pairs. Visually nice and very long movie about his story. November 14, 2009

Tarnation - Unrated It's not very nice thing to say about someone's tragic life but I found this one quite... lame. The awful things just pass like someone telling how his day was like. Partly this is because the psychedelic imagery and that the story went on mostly in text form. Visually, not much happened. Basically all that I was thinking during the film was that this Jonathan is a good looking guy. November 11, 2009

Two Weeks Notice - PG-13 The film had a scene about diarrhea. Do I really need to say more?
Hugh Grant doesn't seem to do any other type of roles. The humour was bad (see the diarrhea part), including the compulsory oops-we're-accidentally-in-a-situation-that-looks-sexually-orientated scene. And I can't sense any kind of chemistry between Bullock and Grant.

Mozart and the Whale - PG-13 Two people with Asperger meet and fall in love. Hence the title in Finland: Crazy in Love. Kinda gives the wrong impression, having Josh Hartnett starring and all. But well, the irrationality of everything annoyed me. Also I find it quite questionable that the autistic recurring characters were seemingly there just for comical purposes. You know, to say or do something that the so called normal people wouldn't dare. November 9, 2009

Tali-Ihantala 1944 - Unrated A fantasy film for war veterans. And strange enough: only one or two soldiers had any kind of accent. Some were actually Swedes! The usage of real documentary clips was clumsy. The emphasis was strongly on showing the brave, brave soldiers of Fatherland and their tremendous suffering to ensure that the Russians (Soviets, right?) won't ever reach Helsinki and get their dirty hands on Finnish children, mothers and wives.
Also, the movie was boring.
