From a Whisper to a Scream
For one of his last appaerances, Vincent certainly could not have picked ssuch a great collection/wrap around vignettes to mark the last years of his presence. The stories are very good, I mean REALLY good, something that we just add as a bonus when we talk of 80's fliks...This one gets sadly overlooked, and well, that says it all.

Sweeney Todd (2006,  Unrated)
Sweeney Todd
This, is the Bloody good stuff, before it was Goth-Disneyized by Burton...No singing numbers, No love songs, Just the harsh, Pox stricken wasteland of late 20th centurty London, and a Barber (who, were surgeons on the mend back then, hence the red and white barber posts...They also bled folk...and ya get to see it all here...) The dirtiness, the sadness, the reality that life is not pretty sometimes, and very reminiscent of times that could be once again.
I first saw Sweenty Todd, done as a macabre play in NYC, on stage it was fantastic...(But this was 89...and the shirt I cherish shows why...) This? Is a masterpiece...The acting, atmos, and Mrs.Lovett, and the cruel twist that, again, Mr.Burton must selectively forgot. I was originally going to write this in my review of Disn, er...Burton's Todd, but I decided to let the fanfare die out before trying to even get a word in about this one...In short? This is the one you Horror fans want to see...the screenplay is fantastic, and acting is nothing less than what you would expect from such a great cast.
BBC just doesn't do kids shows, Monty Python and the News anymore...they produce some of the best.
See this one if you don't feel like hearing Matthew sing again...

Confessions of an Opium Eater
Geisha gals in bamboo cages that run underground till they die, swarms of asian women thrown into slavery, Opium dens, and my fave, Vincent...who Yes, loves his opium! This is a very dark film, one of my favorites, and not one that many will agree with me on, but it is not the type of film for everyone. If you remember that sometimes the most frightening things have happened in history, then you will appreciate this gem.

Diary of the Dead
To all who have not had the chance to see Romero's latest in his infamous 'DEAD' series, this one uses a very different approach, Using somewhat recognizable plot device a la Cannibal Holocaust to Blair Witch, this is indeed a moral tale in reality vs. the lense of a camera.
The effects are superb, and not overstated, which adds to the realism, and generally just sucks you in, as they really paid attention to editing detail and making sure there was no plot holes (well, not that I have seen as of yet, maybe I should watch it again...) Anyhow...I know most of us N.American Horrorhounds have not been given the proper opportunity to see it...(yet it was filmed here in Toronto, Canada...) Which leads me to suspect an ulterior motive...By any means possible...even if the DEAD films are new to you, you will be able to appreciate it for what it is, and even the most jaded of Zombie afficiado's will agree that Romero never ceases to amaze.

Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead (2009,  Unrated)
Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead
I was fortunate to see the premiere of this, with Uncle Lloyd, when I was his 'companion' for it at the Calgary Indy Film Fest this October...I had spoken to him before the premiere, and as we all know, Lloyd is a very enthusiatic individual...and it really shows in the 35 years of TROMA glory he has maintained to this very day. POULTRYGEIST actually stunned me...He had explained that he and his wife had to put up their own funds for this musical, and they did not make a bad wager, as the film is sheer brilliance! Making it a musical worthy of the KARA-YOKE-E dvd that I am positive can be bought thru the site. As any TROMA fan knows, TROMA has always made clear messages thru the way that they only do, This one is about the disgusting fast food industry, But there is also romance, Zombified chickens, over the top toilet scenes, and even a musical number, Scottish Style, which features Lloyd and Jason in traditional 'kilt-like' outfits, and G-strings.
This film is not for everyone, but it has made quite an impact, with an extremely effective original plot, and many other messages thru disgust and Horror, This will be one of TROMA's trademark films, It will be remembered for this one...(and he didn't believe me when I told him that...I was right, see???)
Unfortunately, unless you have an official screener..*ahem* you will just have to wait for it to come to your town. (If you live in the Seattle/Vancouver area around the border, I should have him and the film here by the late summer...Watch for it!)

The Haunted Palace (1963,  Unrated)
The Haunted Palace
One of my all time favorite Poe titled, H.P.Lovecraft mish mash of the Corman Poe films...(aka Midnite Movies collection, which are now all OOP (My collection is complete ;P ) Seriously tho...this is one of the few films that you can see Jr. actually do a good job as his role, and only in this does Vinnie (the Gutsy guy he was!) utters real phrases from the notorious NECRONOMICON...(LSD in Tingler, Opium in Opium Eater, and this? ) What a man!

Bleeders (Hemogoblin) (The Descendant) (1997,  R)
Bleeders (Hemogoblin) (The Descendant)
I really liked this, (also known as Hemoglobin) as I love Dan O'Bannon's writing and directing, although as you can see...it isn't for everyone. I found it to be very effective in its chilling atmos...

Dagon (2001,  R)

King Of The Ants (2003,  R)
King Of The Ants
The most recently released Gordon flik, This one strays from Lovecraft, into an entirely different genre of Horror. More pschological and general creepy, there isn't a large quantity of gore, but a plot that makes up for it...(which, in this day and age? is a good thing..)
40
Re-Animator (1985,  R)
41
Dolls (1987,  R)

44
From Beyond (1986,  R)
From Beyond
Before the new-re-edited version came out, there was only one way to see this film in its entirety, and that was on VHS...Fortunately, I had said version, and never had to wait for the 7 minutes of extra material, which of course, was basically alot more gore, But even without those 7 minutes, it remains one of my favorites from Gordon.
45
Castle Freak (1995,  R)
Castle Freak
This remains to be one of Full Moon's best releases (Besides the infamous PUPPETMASTER series...) Again, we have Gordon at the Helm, and we see Jeff combs play a character that isn't quite the 'hero' we are used to seeing...(Neither does the Daughter..HA!) ooooooooo, that was just bad.

Albert Fish
When I finally got my hands on possibly THEE only true Docu-Drama about one of the most notoriously twisted men to ever suck on baby flesh, Albert Fish.
This is, I admit, NOT a film , like the Ed Gein films, but more of a collection of facts, and vignettes with actors re-creating what knowledge they have finally dug up on this one...Highly recomended.

This has to be one of the best fliks made in awhile, imo....I really liked the idea that there was a mystery along with a very fine plot...Not just a wanna be psuedo-docudrama deal..But they pull it off flwlessly! The 'infected' folk, (The Z word never gets used...proper Zombie film etiquette, check) and we get a sense from the beginning that there is way more at work here than the obvious...this one starts off innocently enough, but Shit, it sure does kick in, and boy, these Zombified souls are fast! Its like, you get bit, and bang...you are good for about 4 mins....then you are sucking brain matter splatter everywhere...A really, REALLY creepy finish (seriously, I think theres a few out there who would not be able to watch this...)
But you aren't one of those, are ya?

Lemora - A Child's Tale of the Supernatural
Not hard to find, just not 'popular' until the 'Horror Bloom' began...This isn one of those films that touches on so many wrong topics, and then there is the twists and turns into strange areas that I have never seen in any plot before...This is truly one of my top ten faves, and I reccomend it immensly...

SEE THIS FILM!
Do not listen to these fools...How could this well-plotted flik, including, Dark Humor 'League of Gentlemen" alumnus, Reece Shearsmith, and many other notable UK faces...This is one of those "IT JUST GETS WORSE' films...Firstlyi? Dark, Dark comedy here...If you want an unintelligent CGI, plotless piece of shit...Bubye...Shooo! But if you want to see an original slice of great fx, violent and just weird...I personally say SEE THIS!

House of the Long Shadows
This Peter Walker film may not have Sheila Keith in it, but it does boast having the honor of the last appearance, in one film, of the four men who are pictured, Vincent Price, Chris Lee, Peter Cushing, and John Carradine in a sadly, flat plot, yet the sheer obvious fact makes it a collectable on its own.

Gottta love the stripping scene...If only I could somehow do that? I would be a happy Horror Harlot...
Great film of Vignettes (starring many an actor, such as Donald Pleasance) as a leader of the 'V' squad...) all wrapped around by a visit into a nightclub that exists only for the , well...Monsters.

It really bites that NO matter which set, or individual threesome of this series was made for TV, and cut...badly! Unfortunately, for some very odd reason, they did not ever save any of the un-edited, so? No matter what you have?(I have the series and set...) You will not get it unedited...simple as that.
111
American Psycho (2000,  R)
American Psycho
This is probably one of those few films that are actually better than the book...(which had chapters of searingly sensless diatribes to fashion, cologne, and other 80's High end Wall st exec metrosexual livlihood...) Bale is amazing as the simply psychotic Bateman....and is quite effective, even whilst being terribly nasty during a Phil Collins song...

When Blue Underground released this as a limited Double Disc, I jumped on it, How can you go wrong with said authors, actors and of course, Romero and Argento at the helm. Now OOP, you can settle for the one disc, But if you are a collector like myself? This really is a must (Kind of like The Phantasm Sphere...a must have!)

Another one of a Corman made trilogy of 3 stories, but this time from Nathanial Hawthorne...Of course, also released on Midnite Movies, I doubt there will be another release, as this is oop, and should be cherished...Not one for everyone, But if you love your Vinnie as mucgh as I do...(The first tale is the best, imo...)

An Evening of Edgar Allan Poe (1972,  Unrated)
An Evening of Edgar Allan Poe
HOLY FRIGGIN CHRIST!! How can this be??
One of Vincent Price's Best performances, and nobody has anything to say? (Let alone rate it?) Basically? This is a one man tribute to 3 stories by Poe, and Price plays all characters, voices, and general everything of just a pure actor on stage, with Poe memorized to the tee. I recommend this to anyone who not only wishes to see the stregth of Price's performance, but also seeing Poe done like no other. Also on Midnite Movies, and OOp.

The Masque of the Red Death (1964,  R)
The Masque of the Red Death
This film, infamous more for the cover artwork (I know I have my Hoodie with it on it!) has wonderful Hazel Court hangin out with Vincent in his amazingly constructed set of a palace filled with monochromatic rooms, and of course, it IS a Poe story, one of my faves...and surprisingly close to the original story too!
Although that tiny girl was either a child or a dwarf...who knows, but its creepy.
118
Freaked (1993,  PG-13)

I remember when I first read about this film in Film Threat, (ohhhh, 1993? maybe???) When I finally saw it (and then subsequently got it on VHS, got sent a free comic, then the special edition DVD?) I have to give it up to Stern and Winter...I love the cameo's of The Butthole Surfurs, and well, the costumes are just fucking great...(never mind the trippy visuals..) Once again, Pete Walker proves he has got it, with usual help from the uber-unsettling Sheila Keith, (whom is not listed in Flixster as an actor for faves, such a shame!) This is prolly one of my Favorite walker films..(Except for The House of Long Shadows' which I am just proud to own..) It has Cannibalism, and Power tool splatter, and a plot! I love this film, and I wish Pete Walker was not as underrated...

The Devils
One of my very absolute favorites of all time...Based on the true events (Which the majority of Russells films are, ie GOTHIC, SALOMES LAST DANCE....) in this wonderful period piece (filmed by Derek Jarman) that is not only exquisite in its whole atmos and design, but the actors are top notch, and the story, being very close to the actual events, including magnificent performances by Redgrave, as the disgruntled, hunchbacked Nun, to Reed as Grandier...The story of Loudon is quite interesting, and brought to life in an accurate spectacle.
164
The Raven (1935,  Unrated)
The Raven
One of the 3 Karloff/Lugosi Poe stories from the 30's adaptions, THE RAVEN is one film where Lugosi gets the leg up on Boris in the beginning, but Karloff, in the end, as per usual, Bela loses to...Not very close to the original Poe story, (actually, not even in the same zipcode) still works.
165
The Raven (1963,  G)
The Raven
Not one of my favorites from the Corman-Poe/ Vinnie films of the 60's, However, it was the very first one I ever saw, and it had me hooked at 7! I recieved the 12 inch figure of Vinnie from this one, (Hat included) and it is one of my favorite Figures of Vinnie I have...(well, besides the Dr.Phibes...that one is just amazing!) Anyhow...This is a comedy, and of course, Price, Lorre and Karloff work together wonderfully, and even a young Jack Nicholson is included in the comedic matters...Classic.

The Legend of Hell House (1973,  PG)
The Legend of Hell House
An amazing adaption of Mathesons book, 'Hell House', this film will make you really think. The effects, considering the time, are used wisely and very effectively, Of course there is nothing to complain about plotwise, and the actual house is utterly lush in colour and atmos...Every HorrorHound should have this in thier collection...

Besides the fact that it reminds me of TCM 2, (and I know I aint the only one...) This music video of a Horror flik, (which isn't bad...) But the cast? amazing, and the effects/make up is simply realistic and disturbing, despite the obvious stepping stone of Sherri Moons career, (and Oh! Didn't Karen look just swell?) All in all...I enjoy this flik about once or twice a year, and it is allways entertaining.

The Nun (La Monja)
I love the Nun films...Although, this is no 'Killer Nun' or even a nunspoitation flik like 'Letters from a Porteguese Nun' or 'Beyond the Convent Walls', 'Justine', etc) This one has a slight J-Horror feel to it...But the effects are not overbearing, and is pretty effective. Very creepy.

Ju-on: The Grudge (Ju-on 3)
The Original 'Grudge' film, before they did the 'N.Americans-can't-enjoy-original-foreign-Horror-fliks' and The Grudge series was born...I didn't see a 'Ju-On 2' listed, but then Its not the first one on here to not be in Flixters library (neither is 'The Horror Star', which sucks.
Ju-On is a generally creepy J-Horror, and has the imprative long Black Haired pale asian woman creepy, soaked in water deal going on, very much like the J-Horror standard. This time it centers around a little boy tho...
I have never seen any of the 'Grudge' films, as I despise the remake issue.

Trainspotting
Despite the glamourization of being a smack addict in Scotland, this is a brilliant film, and features one of my faves, Ewen McGregor. Having once been both in Scotland and been a Heroin addict, (Not at the same time) I can honestly say that it frighteningly realistic, and even though they really try not to glamorize it, it still managed to, and make Iggy Pops 'Lust for Life' a calling card to the film. Another aspect that N.Americans had a problem with was the Scottish burr, (I can't believe they actually had to subtitle the Bar scene,...C'mon, its not THAT hard to understand...(But then the author has been likened to 'A Clockwork Orange' and Anthony Burgess' use of phonetically Scottish wording. Despite the whole deal, the ending comes through brilliantly, and makes the best point.

The Howling
No holds Barred, and another special effects piece of artistic glory, 'The Howling' deals with more than your average wolfman tale, Nope...it goes way down into the abcesses of our sexual secrets, and presents a sad existance for the Monster. Very stylistic, and a little shocking, The Howling stays true even over 2 decades later...

Another 2 Disc box set, ooped by Blue Underground (You can still get the one disc box still, I think..) Another story bout a small town that has a nasty little secret. River's Edge
LOVE this film! When you mix Dennis Hopper (acting like an ex-biker lunatic, hard role to play for him...) and Crispin Glover, just plain nuts & on speed (Again, a stretch for such an astute actor..), and a young Keanu reeves, with nasty lil fuck of a brother played by the snarkiest brat in late 80's films, (Near Dark) J.J.Miller, and a cast of other young notables, centers around the events that follow a group of friends who discover that one of their 'gang' has gone and killed his gal...and rather non-chalantly at that.
Wrapped up nicely with a soundtrack consisting of mostly Slayer, you can't go wrong.
This? is why they have a type of pot called 'Feck'

Well, in this J-Horror classic, They ALL do, and then some...it begins a fad, Everyone wants to become part of The Suicide Club! Word of Mouth is the terrifying reality here, and even more sad....the poor detective that is put on the case. I liken it to the old phrase..."If all your friends wanted to jump off a metro platform, Would you?!??"
Yes, they would answer, and would.

Yet another film that was 'N.Americanized' (with M.S.Gellar at that! Damn! She IS Shamless!). The original, Kairo, then became 'Pulse'...However, since I don't do the n.American re-makes, This one is another example of subtlety VS. In your Face, and as always....the original wins on its subtle hints and flashes of things that you may have to ask yourself if you are really seeing this? Or....are you just seeing things.

Halloween III - Season of the Witch
One of my absolute favorite stories that John Carpenter did with his HALLOWEEN series (which was originally supposed to be a series of Anthologies..) We see the infamous commercials that kill, with the ever repeating spooky tune that the kids just LOVE to watch...why, they will even run to the TV every time the damned commercial runs! The computer effects are so 80's it isnt funny, (which brings back great memories for me..) This film is so effective, and well done, it is too bad, However, that many 'Halloween' fans don't get this one, and have been slagging it for years, treating it like a leper on a luxury liner. Season of The Witch is a misunderstood film, and sadly, J.Carpenter had to let go of his idea of anthologies as the character of Micheal Myers was what the Audience really wanted.

Martin
I love this film! One of Romero's earlier films, we meet Martin, a young adult with a penchant for Human Blood...But he isn't a cruel Vampire..No, No! He is 'gentle' with his 'victims' (whom he uses a sterile syringe to suck the blood out of 'Just enough to do the job', leaving his victims in some curious predicaments. But then it gets out of control (as does everything in most Romero films) and Martin falls in Love.

Hungry Wives (Season of the Witch)(Jack's Wife)
Another Romero film that touches on the dark side of human nature and lonliness, SEASON OF THE WITCH (and on some versions, you also get 'THERE IS ALWAYS VANILLA!' Hoo-Rah!) In this one, we have a suburban Housewife who is not only bored, but has nothing to keep her busy when her hubby is out working late nights..So? What does a young, attractive lonely wife do? Get into Witchcraft! (These days, it is pussy ass New Age crap) The point is, we see another troubled soul who gets a tad too mixed up in the new hobby they have chosen.
The great thing about Romero films is they rarely stray from the Human condition, and this is one that certainly gets the point accross. (Don't Fuck with shit you know nothing of!)

I remember seeing this one in the theatre, and thinking it was just brilliant, Not only do we get a great selection of characters (including cameo's by Iggy Pop, and Lenny from Motorhead ) We see a future we really don't wish to...even tho you can buy Pot Cigarettes, and we see just how messed up the designer drugs of the future can get you. When a film opens with the lead singer of Fields of the Nephilim, you KNOW it is going to be interesting. Also? The video montage, to the tune of Stigmata by MINISTRY, (and visually includes scenes from GWAR and other 'alternative' music notables on the telly screen.) The plot is different, and really does work quite well.

slightly disturbing, and an excellent edition of it released by Crterion, This film stars the ever curious Alida Valle (An Argento regular) speaking in her native tongue, and brilliant in her acting as usual. The story is a well known one...simply put? a Doctors daughter has facial deformities due to a car accident. Instead of just being satisfied at her life being saved, he continues to try and bring back some semblance of normality by working with different methods for recreating a face for his otherwise masked daughter. C'est arrivé près de chez vous (Man Bites Dog) (It Happened in Your Neighborhood)
Another excellent release of this film is the Criterion edition. When I first saw this film, it was in a theatre known for its diverse selections, and it was quite a film to behold, as we didn't have films like 'The Last Horror Movie' or even anything remotely like it! Subtitled, of course, can be funny sometimes, especially if you know the language being spoken, Here it is French, and not Canadian French, but Parisian French, and The Criterion edition is alot more accurate in its subtitles, than any other version of it.
When this came out, I remember it made quite alot of noise, and was considered very controversial for its time. Now? It still stands alone in its unique and frighteningly casual feel about the whole thing...

Based on the Infamous Richard Matheson Novel 'I, Legend', (which also features the short stories that form the anthology 'Trilogy of Terror' with Karen Black) Has to remain one of the first films to deal with the walking dead, and one mans struggle to survive amongst the angry zombified vampires. Also an inspiration for 'The Omega Man' this story should never be touched again...(and never should have been, especially with Will Smith! what were they thinking?) Finally! Myra Hindly and Ian Brady get their much deserved story on film. This film explores the serial killer couple phenomenon, (i.e. Badlands, Natural Born Killers, and many others inspired by the likes of real life couples who kill) One thing that should be noted before your expectations may be ruined, but there is no gore to be seen...this is strictly pure accuracy of the true life events of the films antagonists/protagonists, depending on your tastes. The film started right quick, which was good, I really hate lame ass long beginnings, at least this one was right to the story. The Girl Next Door
DON'T get this confused with the boy, and his gal next door porn star...No, No...NO...THIS one is a dark and disturbing look into a very wrong family, (led by a Sadistic, mysogynist matriarch, who..if it weren't for the fact that she gives Beers and smokes out to all the boys in the hood, (as in 6-12 yr old boys..) as they enjoy playing what they call 'The Game'...Definately not a fun or fair game...it involves all the boys basically ganging up on the hoods gals, and gettign them to do shit...again, led by WonderMom. It isn't surprising to see that this is based on true events, even in the late 50's, Christ and Cruelty were one, and well...all women were whores...especially if you allowed your sons to gang rape her while being egged on by Mom...This film is disturbing on so many levels, it just makes you wonder just how an attractive Mother of 4 Boys and the rest of the hood's kids by association, gets annoyed soooo much by one 12 yr old girl...who , as luck would have it, was put into her care, as her sister and her were orphaned after a fatal car accident, leaving the youngest sister in braces to boot...the two girls are deemed many things but anything appropriate, and get beaten for it.
This is an amzing look into the things that happen beneath our noses, until it gets out in the papers, and then, we are all shocked...we shouldn't be by now...as there has been far too many cases of females being locked and tortured in cellars everywhere...we just don't hear them screaming...

Well! I gotta say? I was impressed with this...Not overly impressed, like 'OMG! This was spectacular flik!" But enough good scenes where the Make-Up fx and so on REALLY did the job...The actors? Well, they didn't suck...and yup, you certainly wanted most of em dead...(ALWAYS a good sign) Not alot of CGI, but real art. The story? Not particularily original..However? I am much happier seeing an unoriginal plot, but used in a new way in a new flik...as opposed to re-making something...and changing it so it 'fits the times'.
And then, of course, there is Kane Hodder!! Not much speaking from Kane, (as usual) However, he nailed what he was, and everyone knows you can't go wrong with a monster when Kane is its guts...Dark, Black Humor, and boasting many cameos of Horror actors we all know and love (Robert Englund, Tony Todd, etc...) This flik is almost making Horror look like it just may be evolving into better, and original films...That makes this Horror Harlot really Happy, as I cannot begin to say anything about the....*grrrr* re-make thing...I hope this is a sign of better things to come...

This film was just what a Gorewhore needed to see this weekend...This film is not only brutal...it actually reminded me of 'SCARECROWS' (aka PARATROOPERS), as it involves stolen money, and that is never good. The French seem to be really great when it comes to breaking boundries in their films, If you think of it (Haute Tension, Irreversible, Calvaire, Interiror...etc) We seem to be entering a new phase in Horror when we get to see more from other countries, and this one really hits the spot...If you want that TCM feeling, with a tad of utter surrealism in a Nazi 'Family' who cannot reproduce...and again, we see a woman fighting not for only her own, but for the life of her child...One that was being aborted asap at the beginning of the film.
Plot is excellent, although one may argue, not very original, but hey....I think there is a sub-genre of Horror all based on the original TCM...so what?

The very best testament to the power of the real life events surrounding Guyana and Rev.Jim Jones, this was originally made for TV, (and starred a bunch of new faces, like Brad Douriff as the Junkie turned Physician to Jones himself, played by Powers Boothe masterfully..)
A sad story, with good intentions, we see the account (collected from survivors) of the killings, torture, and Drug use within The Peoples Temple. If you watch this film without knowing anything about the Guyana tragedy and Rev.Jones, then I suggest you get a quick account of it beforehand, as it is very unbelievable, and even more shocking over the 990+ people who drank the Cyanide Kool Aid...and the ones that were shot down whilst trying to escape.
This is as true as it gets kiddies...Highly Recommended!

W Delta Z (The Killing Gene) (2007,  R)
W Delta Z (The Killing Gene)
Great underrated flick, which, unfortunately has been compared to the 'SAW' films...with a bit of 'Se7en' thrown in for good measure...this is actually a grim, original plot that is well executed and leaves you feeling numb, not something you would want to watch twice in a row. Not so much depressing than just realistic, WAZ offers a unique view of psychology and human nature. I thouroughly recommend it.

Wow...I remember going to the Limlight circa 1986, and let me tell ya...as a REALLY young Goth, My mind was certainly opened on a new type of expression...I never actual met Micheal, but have an old poster from one of the Limelight parties...Ahhhh, The days of Swine and Roses....
This film is fantastic...For a Gorewhore, like myself, I am usually used to a little more than fake blood that we know is fake in costume, but this is a Horror flik, if you have ever been a drug addict, or known one, you will know thisn film goes along quite well with BASKETBALL DIARIES and TRAINSPOTTING, to see the sick paradox to drug use and glamor. ALL actors were superb...(I laughed me ass off seeing good ol Marilyn dressed as a female german , Semi-Driving, club kid...and Seth Green, and Caulkin, well..nuff said. As for the real story, I remember the Geraldo's that would bring em out for the world to see, and I remember when Micheal got fingered by Villiage Voices Micheal Musto...It was EVERYWHERE!
What a strange long road some of us take....

Stephen King's It (1990,  Unrated)
Stephen King's It
Ya know? Checking out some of the recent reviews, it is obvious that I am not the only one that recently pulled this film out, and decided, 'This is always a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon" or? "Shit, I really haven't seen that great scene with the kid in the pipe in awhile...hmmmm..." Yup....Brings back memories for me, after watching it premiere on TV, as it was a Made for TV flik, after the success of THE STAND as a mini series) In any case, Pennywise always is the great reminder of why clowns are just damned spooky, and the paradox between who, or what, a child will believe in, and trust. Many great actors (Including the late John Ritter) and as every Stephen King film goes, a stellar cast, be they kids or adults. It also goes to show you that there was a time when having cable was worth it....(Wouldn't happen now!)
I don't need to recommend this...but of course, who wouldn't???

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006,  R)
All the Boys Love Mandy Lane
Its too bad that we do not see Horror done subtly nowadays, and if so? Its 'Boring'. This film has managed to carch the melancholy slow days of summer, and one very long night on a ranch, all devised for a gal, that would be Mandy, to be 'taken' by some male contenders that she doesnt ever give in to...It reminded me of what would happen if David Lynch did Clueless, without the imagination, but certainly an atmos deserving of a slight syrrealness.
There are some great kills, and of course, teenage debauchery (which rises the innocence issue...we all know that gals that are slutty, anoerexic, do coke, and has a different set of silk skimpies on, well she is gonna be dead...and Yes, the twist...That there is, and its a good one, but somewhat....yes, predictable.
Nonetheless, its a good yarn about an age old problem.
With killing .
Worth the rental...

The Thing (1982,  R)
The Thing
One of THEE only re-makes that I will not scream and throw things at, The Thing still does it for me...I remember skipping school, at 12 to stay home and watch this (2-3 times a day on a pay per view Movie Channel...) I think the film isimperative for any Horror Hound to see, more importantly, own. It is a classic, Now that we have coloured 'classics' now...The music that Carpenter utilizes by Morricone is brilliant, and of course, nothing says way out in the middle of butt-fuck nowheresville, Antarctica is certainly it...The effects, STILL, to this day? are unbeaten, there is no CGI that can do what that film does with real craftmanship, and certainly again, makes it a classic to be savored, and then slowly digested, Carpenter's THE THING will always be on the very best of best of lists...

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975,  R)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
By the time I was 9, I knew every lyric to every song, as my Dad was a die hard, and it was the only tapes we played in the car. Saw it at 9, (and I will ask you to note that it was the very beginning of the 80's when that was)
RHPS is a phenomenon I have had the pleasure of screening, and playing 'Magenta' on the stage, and even now, decades after seeing it as a 9 yr old, INo matter what, as jaded as I think I am, I can't help but find myself shouting lines out even if I am viewing it all alone in my home...I must admit tho...as far as musical mayhem in fliks...PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE is actually one I would want to screen, as it does actually have a larger (and fresher) following, as it is one of my faves, with TROMA's POULTRYGEIST running almost just as close. (Then there is also Cannibal The Musical, as well, from TROMA...besed on the true story of Alfred Packerd) A niche of a genere, its a fresh one, and always makes for great toe-stompin.
There will never be another...(and the fool that thinks it could be re-made will have a virtual army cursing them...Thats a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Feed (2005,  Unrated)
Feed
I got this one a coupla years ago...and it was actually suggested to me by the late, great Robert Epstein (RIP). He wanted to know what I thought of it, before he wrote about it. I was a bit confused, as he would ask about Horror fliks that were not so well known, to just the obscure, But he felt as though this film had mixed feelings. Indeed, as we can see...there are.
Its no shock to us, as we all know just how sad the state of bariatric problems and Obesity are here in N.America and the UK, It has become an 'Epidemic' they say...Never mind the $$$ that is spent on trying to save peoples lives, cause they don't, or won't stop eating fatty foods. Could it be people like 'Chubby Chasers' and all the models we see in funny posts and vids of extremely overweight women in scant clothing to laugh at, and sadly, there are those who can justify their happoness being so dangerously overweight, JUST because of the freak factor.
This film presents a very sick and probably real situation that is dealt with quite well. It may not horrify men as much as id does females, prolly because we females seem to be the ones that are bombarded with what we need to look like to please others. And just like any Fetish, Yes, there are Obesity freaks who perpetuate that it is beautiful, and encourage the debauchery that is slowly killing them. This film is a cruel vision of where some seek their pleasure and greed in the form of sites dedicated to the largest, unmovable, blobs of human life put up for frighteningly large amounts of admirers. Except it is more evil and seething than even the worst possible exploitation of a medical addiction to food. We are also reminded that these women are worked by those who know exactly what these poor women want to hear...which sure beats what they are used to not wanting to hear. This film is not a happy one, but an enlightening one, and certainly made me think, and definately stands out on its own. A very controversial film, I think it is frightening because of how close to home we know it is...and sometimes that is all a good flik needs.
I recommend it to anyone that wishes to see a disturbing reality, well done effects and make up, and what seems to be an ignored original plot. At least rent it.

The Sentinel (1977,  R)
The Sentinel
As Stephen King said "Films that feature real human oddities, i.e. Freaks, The Sentinel, is more frightening to the audience, as there is no zipper running down the costume back, The reality of that, is what makes it so creepy..." Ya know...I remember watching this on Pay TV as a kid...and thinking, "Holee! Those are real people!" and, just like Brownings FREAKS, (and even THE FREAKMAKER) are all films that have incredible people in them. But back to the film itself. With a stallar cast of young actors, (a very young and warped Beverly D'Angelo with Ava Gardner as a set of Lascivious Lesbians, along with a very strange Burgess Meredith, then there is a very young and quiet Chris Walken...SOOOO young!) Amongst others. Chris Sarandon flexes his manly moustache in this truly unsettling battle between the God, and the Dogs of hell, in a very brutal, and relentless gory series of murders, (seriously...there is one scene where a face gets it damned hard, and the effects? Brilliant! (considering the time period...it is even well done by todays KNB standards) Very remiscent of ROSEMARY'S BABY (or would make a great pairing with for a Double Bill.) we see that just like the Ghost hunters say: "The houses, mansions, wherever, retain spititual residue within their very existance, be it a block of concrete, brick, or tile...every part of a building can remember, and hold spirits within."This one always does somethin for me...

Hostel: Part II (2007,  R)
Hostel: Part II
Ya know when you have a new roomie, (and you havent had one in 4 years!?) and they see that you have over 1000 DVDs, and they are all horror, and the one flik they want to see is Hostel 1 &2?? It is a wee frustrating...Kind of like the SAW quadrology, (Oh yeah...thats right up there..) Basically you own these because they are your business tools?
Well..this is my fate right now...a new roomie, with an aching to see all the SAW's and HOSTELS...and what can you say, especially when they bought you Pizza and junk food?
Damn!
Well, it is an Eli Roth flik(s) and so, I suppose for the sake of being a Tromette, and respect for another TROMA Alimnus, I did not mind...Besides, I had not watched it since I bought it, so what the hell, right?
This one? Is better than the first, imo....Maybe it was because we see just how sinister this society turns out to be, and also places women into power roles.(From Elizabeth Bathory tribute, to Honey gots the $$$) Hostel 2 doesnt have any shameless 'love' scenes to the beat of techno music from The Wicker Man, Nope, pretty fucking straight up for this one, Not to mention 'The Twist' and a very realistic job of a manhood being cut into place...After watching this, you have an overwhelmong craving to go and take a nice blood bath, or get back at a shit ex-boyfiend. I wonder what the third will reveal?
If you havent seen this, and dont plan to? You are either one who despises Horror fliks, or? You love them SOOO very much? You do not wish to soil your tastebuds with anything substandard...In any case? This one is the better of the two in gore and plot...(But see the first one, as it really is a busted must...)

Lost In Translation (2003,  R)
Lost In Translation
Normally, My daily regiment must include at LEAST one Horror flick...(One a day heeps your annoying wimp aquaintences away!) But then there are the days where the usual screaming, guts and gore just won't do it...I soon discovered, after watching LIT , ironically enough, in another country, far far away, and discovering new peoples and places...Now I know this for sure:
If you are alone, and nothing is warm near you, save maybe a Cat, and you miss the one you love, you watch Lost In Translation.
If you have had a day full of misunderstandings and clusterfuck ass wipes, you come home, and settle with Lost In Tranbslation...and if all else fails, even the most goriest, demented stuff just reminds you of absent fiends...You watch Lost In Translation.

I must admit tho...I never thought that little gal in Hearts of Darkness, would ever turn out to be so amazing at what she does...(But then, she IS a Coppola...Just like Nick Cage...he is also part of that family, but he doesn't let on...)
Bill Murray...Thought he was great as Hunter S Thompson in 'Where the Buffalo's Roam', and this is no exception...Bill Mrray is amazing as ever!

Living Hell (Organizm) (2008,  R)
Living Hell (Organizm)
Made for TV's Sci-Fi channel, we see that the standards, and disturbing frights, have obviously been granted by the channel, as this one has it. A very smart, intelligent film, Iys no surprise to me that there are many hidden secrets that The Gov't does not want you to know about...The plot was original as hell, and the acting was alright...But it was the effects that I was really impressed with, as cheesy as it was at times, however, they still manage to use old methods, mixed with new, to animate the 'threat' (which in iyself is a very ingenious idea)
I know many fans hear its a 'Made for TV' and automatically assume its gonna suck...Just remember tho, that may of the best films, imo, such as The Night of The Scarecrows, and so on, were meant for TV, and made it into quite a hit.

The Zombie Diaries (2007,  Unrated)
The Zombie Diaries
What a breath of Fetid Fresh air! I actually got ahold of a region 2 disc, and Man! What a great plot...it has the twists, and is set up in a very confusing manner that is highly remiscent of MEMENTO, meaning? I had to watch it again, after seeing it, as it makes alot more sense the second time round. Iys funny, I had the screener of Diart of the Dead when it came out, or whatever you want to call what happened to it, as it wasn't released theatrically here in N.America. This film impressed me more than Diary of the Dead, no burn on Romero...but i really liked this one, as it showed just how humanity might re-act in a Zombie attack...Meaning? Its just noy a bunch of drunk rednecks shooting zombies for fun...But there are far worse members of the human race that are equally, if not more cruel and inhumane than the typical redneck scene with them blowin Zombies away, drunkily laughing, Nobody ever thinks that people may actually see this type of an attack for all the crime that would be allowed, as en masse? The protectors(police) have much more to worry about...
I liked this alot, and notice I am pretty alone on it, But? as they say? To each their own, and I am glad I own this one!
