La Ley de Herodes (Herod's Law) La Ley de Herodes (Herod's Law) R 4.0 Stars
A very interesting film of political satire full of interesting characters and a critical look at the problems with the Mexican Government. It's full of humour and it's enjoyable to see a simple honest man be given even the tiniest of villages and still turn into all those he was resisting ever becoming. La Ley de Herodes is a great film of Mexico and one anyone could appreciate.
Tropic Thunder Tropic Thunder R 4.0 Stars
This movie starts out so incredibly strong, has great fake trailers which are hilarious and an amazing opening sequence full of gore and awesome special effects. The movie is very funny throughout and only drags a little in the middle. It's a very funny film and full of a perfect blend of unique action and humour. The performances from black, downey jr. and stiller are all worth watching and this is the best thing i've seen in comedy for the summer and perhaps all year. fun fun fun go see it!
Star Wars: The Clone Wars Star Wars: The Clone Wars PG 2.5 Stars
ehhhh it had it's moments with some cool battles, but overall it didn't really focus on the clone wars as much as it should have. i was expecting some more information to tie episodes II and III together, but instead I just got an extra side story. The action is ok, but especially compared to the mini-series of the same name this just can't compete.
Wild At Heart Wild At Heart R 4.0 Stars
It's not the best film lynch has ever made, but definitely has his signature all over it. Dern and Cage make an interesting couple and the story was full of cool characters and nice style.
Following Following R 4.0 Stars
The movie was really short, and I enjoyed it's simple story and how it was filmed in Black and White. It had a very interesting ending and was classic nolan. The movie wasn't perfect, but showed the true talent that lied in Nolan and once he had a real budget to work with we all know the great films that came out of that.

Pulp Fiction 1. Pulp Fiction R 5.0 Stars
classic movie. has a great script with so many quotes from it you could go all day. also all the stories are interesting and fun to watch.
Audition (Ôdishon) 2. Audition (Ôdishon) R 5.0 Stars
this movie is nuts. it builds up really slow, but when it builds into the horror its amazing. definitely the most intense movie i have probably seen.
Oldboy 3. Oldboy R 5.0 Stars
Hmm I'm not sure what happened to my original review, but oh well here we go again. Oldboy is one of those movies that you will only see once and nothing else comes close to comparing to it. This film along with the rest of the vengeance trilogy puts all other revenge thrillers to shame. This chapter is very intense and with a male lead the aggression is heightened and some of the scenes are quite brutal. This is a movie that deserved all the praise and being made in Korea the film was allowed to explore areas which modern american cinema can't explore. It has one of the best endings I have ever seen and probably will ever see in a movie for a very long time. Instant Classic and one of the greatest films ever made.
Fight Club 4. Fight Club R 5.0 Stars
david finchers best movie hands down. i liked almost everything about this movie. edward norton and brad pitt are great. it kept me guessing and interested all the way up to the awesome climax.
Trainspotting 5. Trainspotting R 5.0 Stars
excellent movie depicting the drug culture. fantastic direction just like fear and loathing it really captured what the people felt like on the drugs as well as going cold turkey. it also blended great humour which made it hard to tell whether it was supposed to be funny or serious. awesome!
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 6. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas R 5.0 Stars
great movie based off a great book. terry gilliam does a great job directing this one. really funny movie that didn't try to prove anything and just laid it out how it was. just be careful the way to las vegas is bat country.

    Candy Candy
    4.0 Stars by Elvira
Candy is a poetic yet very raw and no-nonsense portrait of drug addiction, as lived by Daniel and Candace. Both are very much in love with each other and carry idealistic existences in which drugs play a very central role. As is to be expected, everything is gold-showered an sugar-coated and whatnot during the first months of their relationship: they have money, they love each other, and since they haven't tried to stop using they don't see how difficult it will be. As Candy and Daniel start settling down and spending more time with each other and atempting to build a life, their addiction starts looking like a problem that will make them humilliate themselves for money, and humilliate each other when the pain is so big that they just have to take it out on the other.

The chemistry between Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish is reason #1 so watch this film. Together they are intoxicating, epic, and yet beleivable. Individually, the performances are powerful and heatbreaking: Candy's transformtion from a sweet idealist who dabbles in drugs for fun to an angry addict whose hate towards the world surfaces when she is out of money is chilling. Heath Ledger's character might be less aggressive, but even when he is at his most subdued Ledger manages to communicate his state of mind to us. He adores Candy more than drugs, and that is a lot to say, but he's absolutely hopeless at anything else.

The story itself is nothing new- the message has already been spoken both by Trainspotting and Requiem for a Dream: drugs are fun in the beginning but then awful things start to happen. But Candy brings that universal problem to a very small and intimate scale, in which drug addiction has the same effect on a loving relationship as would an bomb if it fell on their house. Candy doesn't glamorize drug use, yet it doesn't use any tricks to make it more dramatic, but it often makes use of poetry voice-overs and melancholy, hazy cinematography to create an atmosphere that is between hallucination and reality.

The film succeeds at making people care, hate, worry, pity Candy and Daniel, and that is mainly because of the excellent lead performances. Any fan of Heath Ledger should watch Candy, as should anyone who wants to watch a good performance-driven film.

    One deminsional

Starring: Jason Statham, Janaya Stephens, Joan Allen, Ian McShane, Jacob Vargas, Max Ryan, Frederick Koehler, Benz Antoine, Melantha Blackthorne, Robert LaSardo, Natalie Martinez, Tyrese Gibson
    Directed by: Paul W.S. Anderson

This was a great idea for an action film, even tho this is a remake. This movie was FREAKING AWESOME...well the special effects were freaking awesome. Big tank-lookin cars with big machine guns shooting the life outta other big cars all in one big war-like race...DEATH RACE. Other than the awesome special effects this movie was kinda dull. I mean i gave this movie 2 stars just because of the special effects. I gave 1 star to Jason,Tyreese and Joan because they were prety good in this film. The 1/2 star was because this was one of my most anticipating movie to see this year. This movie without the special effects is no good. So if u like Jason Statham, and u like to see big budget war films (with cars) i suggest u go see this movie.

Brilliantly conceived, directed and edited. For thinkers and independent cinema lovers!
Amazing. The first "solo" feature from Marc Caro is just brilliant, but not for everybody. If you like movies like The Fountain, Sunshine and 2001 you will love this!

    A Hard Day's Night A Hard Day's Night
    4.5 Stars by Elvira
A Hard Day's Night is a fictionalized account of The Beatles' experiences during one day of touring... throughout the film, they run inside trains, escape from hordes of screaming girls, play their songs, and try to keep Paul's "grandfather" from getting into trouble. It's shot in lovely black and white, set to the world's most famous soundtrack, and full of sudued ironic humour as well as slapstick.

The first thing that must be taken in consideration when reviewing AHDN, is that if you don't like The Beatles, there is no way in hell that you will like it. This film was made to publicize the group, to define each of them and create their own individual stereotypes -which remained in the public's mind all through the end of their career-, and to highlight their records. I think the idea was to take advantage of The Beatles' wit and the sort of scruffy elegance that was to them at the time: market it, make the world love them even more. The Beatles and their team were visionaries when launching this endeavor, creating at once one of the first rock movies and also preluding their later proto "video clips", pretty recognizable predecessors of music television.

Other than the "visionary" quality there is to A Hard Day's Night, there is also one related to how it captures the spirit of the sixties' entertainment business: the madness, the obsession with hipness, in an almost satiric manner. There is a combination of caricaturesque and realistic characters, a juxtaposition of sanity and insanity, that makes it very endearing and very in accordance to the wild-spirited sixties; mind you, this is before the Beatles went hippy and still wore suits, and so there is also a charming contradiction between their overall carelessness and their well-groomed image. The jokes are funny, but subtle, and the slapstick is not overdone. The Beatles were not the world's greatest actors, but they could deliver their lines with confidence, and whenever there is an awakward moment the script is to blame, rather than the performances. Ringo, Paul, John and George seemed to be having the time of their lives: the screen lights up whenever they appear. They buy into these stereotypes of themselves mockingly, as a lark, and exploit them. They go with the speedy flow of the film like they're so happy to be there, it's contagious. The scenes on the train kick out a fascination with the four of them that is rewarded during the final concert scenes... The experience of watching A Hard Day's Night is priceless, it's like being witness to an event that changed history.

In the end, A Hard Day's Night can be appreciated both as a classic comedy and a sixties period piece. And even despite any acting flaws, it's impossible not to fall in love with the Beatles, so do approach the film because you like their music, or because you're curious, or because you're really into the sixties. Don't, if you for some reason hate the Beatles! Because there's nothing here for you.

I turned the DVD off feeling a mixture of nostalgia for a time I didn't live and for people I didn't know, and a silly inexplicable happiness. Then, I went straight to the vinyl pile in my collection.

No surprises, some interesting deaths, a script as original as an annoying baby.
    Skip it.

Unless you're in the mood for absolutely nothing.
In that case, it actually turns out to be quite amusing.

The Painted Veil The Painted Veil

Another one that should've definitely gotten a higher rating, if I wasn't such an imbecile.
Great performances for a short but perfectly appropriate cast. Obviously, Norton and Watts are the ones that shine the most. Specially the latter. Emotionally very powerful in all her character's stages. But you expect nothing less from her.
The story, without being amazingly unexpected or outside the box, does have its moments. It's simple, but it's also luring. More importantly though - and this is something extremely difficult to achieve -, I believe it's one that you can relate to at several levels, even if those are not directly connected to the main plot.
The ending is slightly similar to a "cut the crap, THIS is real life" one, and yet it's delivered in a wrapping filled with momentum and artistic visuals, which matched the rest of the movie perfectly.

    Low aspects?
Honestly can't say it has any.

Why such a low rating, then?
Well, the "imbecile" keyword at the beginning of the review kinda gives it away, really...

Shouldn't I try being a bit more flexible with movie genres that aren't exactly my cup of tea, in that case?
Hell, will you stop with the fucking questions???

Ah, don't you just love it when a movie turns out to be completely unexpected and full of surprising twists that keep on building until the final climax?
It's so refreshing when you reach the end of a cinematographic display in absolute awe, overwhelmed by its magnificent and compelling plot, its luring set of characters and its ingenious artistic vision.
Cinema truly is a mind blowing field of opportunities...

On a completely unrelated note, this movie made me want to choke on my own vomit.
