I love Sam Raimi... especially his older films so I was ecstatic when I heard about Drag Me to Hell. However once I saw the first trailer, my enthusiasm was hammered down bit because it looked rather run of the mill and didn't seem to set it self apart from the current mindless hordes of formulaic horror movies. However, like the see saw that I sometimes am; I was once again rejuvenated on opening day when I saw the overwhelming positive critics reviews for the film. So off to see it I went! Right from the opening title screen this thing had a really schlocky feel to it... complete with an overly dramatic score to keep things tense but slightly tongue in cheek. However as the film went on, it did tend to fall back on a lot of horror movie cliche's that I didn't think Raimi would resort too. Specifically, this film might possibly have the most try to make you jump/quick edit scare scenes out of any film I've ever seen (by that I'm talking about those scenes where someone/something flashes on screen out of nowhere accompanied by harsh loud music... usually whaling on the piano is standard). The movie went on at a brisk pace, and stayed constantly entertaining yet it still disappointed me a bit. While it did go over the top quite a few times in specific scenes, I couldn't help but feel like Raimi was playing it a little safe with the story and tone. These gripes aside, the film was still quite good... I think most audiences will have a great time with it. It's filled with plenty of scares with a lot of humor thrown in throughout, and the ending I thought was very nicely done. I may have sounded a little harsh in this review... and you're probably thinking my rating of 4 stars doesn't quite fit with how I've written about this movie. That's only because I'm being hard on it based on what could have been. It's still a wonderful movie that people should check out and one I'm glad I ended up seeing. Butter the popcorn and prepare to have fun. 3.75/5 stars.
