Mulholland Drive (2001, R)
This is a multi-layered masterpiece that reveals more of itself upon every viewing. Rarely in cinema, has the ambiguous line between dream and reality been so brilliantly toyed with. Naomi Watts gives a subtly nuanced performance exhibiting range that almost seems to defy imagination. Repeated viewings reveal a multitude of characters/personalities she portrays in this one film. Brilliant. Laura Herring's haunting portrayal leaves you longing to see more of her work as well. |

Persona (1966, Unrated)
Another film where it is virtually impossible to discern what is "real" and what may be dream, fantasy, or mental illness. Equally compelling is the co-dependent relationship between the two women. It's fascinating to watch the range of emotions in a film where (depending on the version you watch) one of the characters never speaks! I am obsessed with their interaction and the powerful dynamics: love, desire, jealousy, envy, resentment, etc.. |
