Very good drama about the rise of the skateboarding culture in 1970's Calafornia. This follows three friends who are into just hanging out, surfing and skateboarding until the owner of the local surf shop decides it's time they took a step up and forms a skateboarding team and the boys become more and more successful up to the point where their friendships are tested and threatened.This has good performances from the whole cast,including Emile Hirsch and the late,great Heath Ledger,a brilliant soundtrack featuring some classic songs from the 70's and is a compelling look into the strength of friendship.

Decent second sequel to the iconic horror series.In this one, Pinhead is unleashed on the Earth through a statue type thing that a sleazy nightclub owner buys as a centre piece for his room.The key to Pinhead's escape is through the bodies of victims that get sucked into the statue and feeding him the flesh and blood he needs to fully enter Earth and it's the job of a local reporter to use the special box that Pinhead and the cenobites escaped from to send them back to hell. This has some cool gory moments and the story and script isn't that bad,despite the odd cheesey line but thats expected.The main let down would be the random appearance of the ghost of the man who later became pinhead,all we know is that he fought with the reporters dead dad in the war but there's no real explanation as to why he's there or how he got there,unless i missed something.Other than that, not as good as the first two but still good.

Although not that good,a bit better than i remembered.The second time director Ivan Reitman cast the unlikely Arnie/Devito pairing.This time Arnies a scientist who decides to impregnate himself after him and Doctor Devito are refused funding for a new drug that could help prevent miscarrages.This leads to the "fun" of seeing Arnie pregnant.This also features Emma Thompson in a strange choice of roles for her.Not great,not a complete waste of time either,it's just there and is ultimately one of those films made for the bargain bin!

Brilliant Korean monster movie. When a monster is spotted hanging off the bridge on the Hans River then jumps off on to the local park for a feeding frenzy a young girl is picked up by it but taken to a big sewer instead of being eaten.The girl's family decide to go and look for her themselves,despite warnings from the police and military to keep away.This has drama and tension as well as laughs and is also satirical in some ways.A very entertaining film.

I watched this when i was tired so probably missed certain bits and pieces.A second,more awake viewing will probably push this badboy up to five stars!

Fuck a duck,this really is a hardcore thriller!After years of living in a crap French town, being abused and bullied,two hardened,street wise girls,one a young girl struggling to cope,the other a beautiful but tough prostitute, decide to get out and go on a road trip full of sex and murder, not caring about the consequences of their actions and who they hurt/kill on the way,with an inevitable climax,so to speak!With scenes of real sex,its suprising this got away with an 18 rated certificate but its the proper plot and script with decent actors that means it gets away from being described as merely pornographic.And in it's own right,defence maybe,its a good,hard hitting and uncompromising thriller.
Derailed Derailed R 3.0 Stars
Average,noir-ish thriller.When a worn down family man and successful ad executive meets a sexy woman on the train who not only seems to be a very kind and nice lady but also attracted to him,he can't believe his luck and actually contemplates having an affair despite being married and having a kid.After another meeting they decide to book in to a seedy hotel for a night of fucking only to be interupted just as they were getting down to it by a violent theif who steals the mans wallet and rapes the woman.If this isn't bad enough the man gets a call from the theif the next day blackmailing him and demanding money seemingly making this mans life collapse around him.This is a pretty good thriller with a couple of decent twists and despite good enough performances from Clive Owen, Vincent Cassel as the mental theif and the beautiful as ever Melissa George,Jennifer Aniston is miscast as the women Owens' character meets on the train and the script isn't as good as it should have been.Pretty good but been done lots of times before and better.

Another brilliant performance by Edward Norton as a man just released from prison after serving three years for the murder of two black men that tried to break into his,and his family's home.This shows the events leading up to his capture and imprisonment,his time in jail and the effect it has had on his family.The amount of hatred that Norton's character shows for other races and later,his remorse for what he's done,makes this film so compelling and makes you realise that this level of hatred and ignorance in the world is very real.Also a great performance by Edward Furlong who plays Norton's brother, trying to follow in his,now old, footsteps which gets him in trouble in school.A powerful,compelling and moving story and a brilliant film.

Brilliant Korean thriller and the second in Chan-wook Park's Vengeance trilogy.Oh Dae-su,a seemingly ordinary man is randomly taken prisoner and locked up for 15 years.On his eventual release he is given a mobile phone and wad of cash.When he later gets a call from the man that imprisoned him he finds out he has only a few days to find the reason why he was imprisoned and to get his revenge.It's a great story with brilliant performaces,great music and its also well directed by Park;the sex and violence is never glamourised,it's just there,and theres some great shots as we see Dae-su,in an amazing performance by Min-sik-Choi, go from a confused and upset prisoner,to the angry,revenge driven man he is on his release to a man struggling with whats happening to him as he tries to find the reasons behind his capture.A great,if disturbing twist at the end to.A motherfucking masterpiece!

    I was expecting more from the movie but it gives a good massage with an example of "How drugs could drive your life".

    Directed by: Christopher Nolan.
    Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckart, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman.

    << "You see, madness is like gravity, all it takes is a little...push" >>

    The story follows Batman a year after his accounter with Ra's Al Ghul and his thugs, the streets remain the same and Batman continues to do what he can with the help of newly appointed Commissioner, Jim Gordon and Gotham's new D.A, Harvey Dent. Before long a menacing madman called the Joker introduces something into Gotham that no one would have ever expected.

    This is no doubt the hundredth review you have read on this film, massively hype for years by fans and recently by the general public, reviews have been pouring in by the bucketload...my review is simply just a reminder, from both an obsessed fan and a general moviegoer, that this film is beyond anyones expectations, especially mine and that it simply is outstanding.

    Everything about the first film is simply raised in level here, everything seems to be in a new direction, yet never forgetting what made Begins so great. Christopher Nolan has always been my favorite director and he has simply proved it here by a mile. To many it might appear flashy that he has taken hold of the newest technology for the film with IMAX cameras etc and in the wrong hands it would have just been for show, but Nolan is god behind these cameras and the epic scope is deftly handled and perfectly assured, the man is long overdue to be recognised more...and Wally Pfeister simply dazzles with the assured tone on this epic scale, it adds such a lovely feel.

    The Nolan brothers screenplay is simply remarkable and again, 'beyond' everything I expected from the film. I was one of the men who knew the film was going to be more than just a Batman film, the footage I saw showed it, the dialogue rang true of it and as I am no doubt repeating in this review, its more than you would ever expect. In Batman 89, the problem that feel on it was the fact that the storytelling was lax and Joker became a first rate character over Batman, who simply became third rate. Begins proved that Batman and Bruce Wayne can be powerful forces and complex humans and faces and TDK continues that power by adding so much more. Morally complex from every angle, its a perfect crime saga under the superhero cover. Each character is given special treatment and in one word, a 'soul'. Bruce Wayne must now face the facts of Rachael being with another man, especially the one appointed as the challenger to Batmans moral values on Gotham. Joker is never given a major origin story and thank god for that, because the direction of Nolans vision didn't need it. He's unrelenting, mysterious much like Batman yet so self destructive and simply one hell of a scary, menacing clown that promises anarchy and chaos.

    I can't go on without mentioning something highly underlooked in films...the score. It is the first soundtrack I would have ever bothered to sit down and listen to throughout and for good reason. Its a rich force that blends beautifully with the complexities of the films morals and emotions, beautifully adding richness to every epic scene on screen, its up there as one of the greatest pieces of music I've heard that can add so much to the moving image.

    You all knew I was getting to this...the performances. Christian Bale once again proves to be the greatest mix put on screen for these characters. As Bruce Wayne, he continues to show the charming and cheeky wit around the way he is seen in city, yet remains so human and battles the strong emotions with others as we all do. Aaron Eckhart simply blew me away, especially when everyone goes in for Heath. He's perfect...there I said it and easily blows Tommy Lee off the face of the earth. He's got the perfect charisma to play this all american man as D.A of a major city and really is a nice threat for Bruce in his personal life, because he is not only similiar in statue as the force of Gotham, but he has won Rachael over, who no doubt sees him as Bruce without the mask...and when Harvey changes into who he is destined to become, Aaron is scary as hell and really is compelling. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a great replacement over the horribly wooden Katie Holmes and is given more to work with this time around and she blends in just well....AND of course Heath Ledger. What more can I say that no one has already said? Many still believe an posthurmous Oscar win would be a sympathy vote, the truth is, if the man was still alive today, he would still win it for what is quite possibly the greatest villian to ever grace celluloid...and that will be argued. Equally unexpecting and expecting, his performance as the Joker will stand for a lifetime. Sure Ceaser and Jack will always have a face for Joker as the showman style of the character, but Heath is the dark side everyone knows from a 50+ year old character. Charismatic, dark, edgy and scary as all fucking hell, he breezes into every scene easily stealing it and delivering something so intense, so unexpected, yet so real. Its a performance to be remembered by someone who died so suddenly and whether or not he wins the truly deserved Oscar, he's already in the hall of fame in my eyes.

    The Dark Knight is a fucking masterpiece. To be, of course as 'opinion', because no one can stand as being right, it is the greatest film I have ever seen and blew my obsessive and very high expectations right out of the water. Moral complex, beautifully captured, deftly controlled, greatly performed...simply great. I still can't say that the film is 'flawless', because I still believe no film can or ever will, but The Dark Knight comes damn close.

    << "You see, nobody panics when things go according to plan. Even if the plan is horrifying. If I told people that a gangbanger was going to get shot, or a busload of soldiers was going to get blown up, nobody would panic. It's all part of the plan. But tell people that one tiny little mayor is going to die and everyone loses their minds!" >>
    What should I be saying here, read my review :) You know my obsession is good for it.

    ...and I was annoyed enough to have to wait until the 24th (release date) here to see it.

    We certainly have come a long way from Adam West and the days of Zing! Blamph! and Pow! havent we?

    The Dark Knight, thank Jesus, lives up to its hype. Then steps over its hype, squishes its hype, and kicks all its expectations to the curb. This is, by far, the best comic book movie ever made and rightfully the number one film to see this year. So lets run through just what makes this film such a massiv success....

    First, the supporting actors. The choice to cast Micheal Cain as Alfred is a great one. Cain has the British charm to make him likeable, the discipline and experience as an actor to be beleivable, and enough youth left in him to not seem as though he's just a useless oddering old butler. The same can be said for Morgan Freeman, one of the best and most enjoyable to watch actors I've ever seen. He comes off as intelligent and useful, his likeable personality and genuine charm make him an asset to both Batman and the movie on a whole.

    Maggie Gyllanhall makes for such a better Rachel Dawes than the annoyingly amatureish acting and child like looks of Katie Holmes. Where Holmes was blank and stale, Gyllanhall glows with emotion and heartfelt reaility. Such a good choice to switch them, if they hadnt been, this would have only gotten 4 1/2 stars. Lastly, Gary Oldman. Befre Batman, I never really thought that much of him. I had'nt seen many of his movies (Fifth Element anyone?) and to me he was just another one of those "successful but not really interested in" actors. After The Dark Knight I have a newfound respect for his talent and just how good it was to cast him in that role.

    Now, here we go, the main course. Aaron Eckhart. Harvey Dent. Ive seen him in one pathetic romantic comedy and forgot about him soon after, but he seemed like the kind of guy who would do well in the right role. Harvey Dent is the right role. He's a nice guy, but only to nice people. Full of just causes and bearing a kind heart. Hes a man with a tough skin, but if that skin is broken, it will twist him to insanity. Eckhart portrays all this so well and its tough to think of anyone else with that perfect blend of "Nice but only takes a certain amount of shit"

    As for Christian Bale as Bats, he has only improved. His deep and menacing "bat-voice" is such a marked improvement from the awefulness of George "stuck up his own arse" Cloony and Val "Shit" Kilmer. My only gripe is that, at times, he sounds a little too menacing for the things he is saying, but thats pretty minor. All in all he is without doubt the best Batman there has ever been. Whether Adam West and his tin of shark repellant is loved by all or not.

    And now for the part youve been really waiting for. The clown, the laughing schitzo, The Joker. As far as I am concerned, Heath Ledger was not anywhere to be seen in this movie. There is no Heath to be found. Heath is not the Joker. The Joker is himself, and himself alone. A scary, dangerous, sadisticly malevolant basket case and when he speaks, its not Heath, it truly is The Joker you are watching and not an actor portaying him. He is one of the most truly unnerving characters of all time and I have never seen anything that even comes close to him. He is nuts, but he's smart. He is violent and rutheless, but indescrimenate. He has no motive, no real goals, no method, and no mind. He will probably go down in history as one of the best on screen characters of history. Rightly so. A joy and a spook to watch at the same time. Brilliant.

    The Dark Knight excells in all other areas. The action and mayhem scenes were very well orchestrated. The films pace was superb, Putting the character focus, scene setting, action scenes and suprisingly excellent suspense scenes all in the right moments to keep you entertained the entire way though, which is a hard thing to do indeed.

    In conclusion, you know the hype. Beleive it. Because this is one film that would be insane to miss. And if you dont want to see it, then why so serious?

    Justins Best Bit: Its criminal to single out one scene as better than the others, but the "pencil dissapearance trick" will always have a special place in my heart.
    I appreciate the fact that many of you have seen this, and that your message sections must be clogged full of reviews for it, but I just couldnt stand not to bring my own angle to the table.

    DIRECTED BY: Cameron Crowe
    STARRING: Patrick Fugit, Kate Hudson, Billy Crudup, Jason Lee, Frances McDormand, Zooey Deschanel, Anna Paquin, Philip Seyour Hoffman

    Synopsis

    Writer and director Cameron Crowe's experiences as a teenage rock journalist -- he was a regular contributor to Rolling Stone while still in high school -- inspired this coming-of-age story about a 15-year-old boy hitting the road with an up-and-coming rock band in the early 1970s. Elaine Miller (Frances McDormand) strict single parent whose distrust of rock music has helped to drive a wedge between herself and her two children, Anita (Zooey Deschanel) and William (Patrick Fugit). Anita rebels by dropping out of school and becoming a stewardess, but William makes something of his love of rock & roll by writing album reviews for a local underground newspaper. William's work attracts the attention of Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman), editor of renegade rock magazine Creem, who takes William under his wing and gives him his first professional writing assignment -- covering a Black Sabbath concert. While William is unable to score an interview with the headliners, the opening act, Stillwater, are more than happy to chat with a reporter, even if he's still too young to drive, and William's piece on the group in Creem gains him a new admirer, an editor at Rolling Stone offers William an assignment for a 3,000-word cover story on Stillwater, and over the objections of his mother , and after some stern advice from Bangs, Williams joins Stillwater on tour, where he becomes friendly with guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and singer Jeff Bebe (Jason Lee). William also becomes enamored of Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), a Band Aid traveling with the band who is no older than William, but is deeply involved with Russell. Lester Bangs and Ben Fong-Torres, incidentally, were real-life rock writers Crowe worked with closely during his days as a journalist.

    My Review

    Almost Famous is one of some real proves in the existancy of wheel of life. What I'm trying to say here is, you see Cameron Crowe here, and you see him 5 years later in Elizabethtown. Got the idea? If you haven't, let me make this clearer that Almost Famous is a real PIECE OF WORK and Elizabethtown is RUBBISH.

    The whole idea is BRILLIANT, about the lives of rockstars, the rise and fall and all is really caught me. This is why I put Cameron Crowe as a good director in my list, his work here is untouchable, way too far from his downfall in Elizabethtown. I'm sorry, I just still don't get why those great directors who have gained good movies want able to cast Orlando Bloom as the lead actor in their movies. (NOTED: Ridley Scott-Kingdom of Heaven, Cameron Crowe-Elizabethtown) And thank God that the Penny Lane role was not given to Kirsten Dunst who was rumored to play the role, instead, she played in (again) Elizabethtown 5 years later. Bloom + Dunst = EARLY DOOMSDAY. Smart choice, Crowe! (total joking)

    Back to the movie, Almost Famous gives a well written script, solid casts (the great actings from Frances McDormand and Kate Hudson, both deserve the Oscar Nomination), good rock musics, and the 70's set works. What I concern about is Anna Paquin that she should given more role here. She's a great actress (an Oscar in her age of 11 by the movie The Piano), it's a great start of career for the young girl. But until now, she mostly only known as the girl named Rogue in the X-Men series. She should be a promising Hollywood talent.

    The characters bond to each other, but of course Penny Lane, played by Hudson, got the center of attention. This is the best Hudson's performance in a movie. The character's chemistry with Russell Hammond, played by Crudup is inevitable. Both barely speaks, but I guess Crowe got a great sense of picking the great actors for the roles ONCE. (I guess you all know why I bolded, biggered, and underlined the word)

    Overall Almost Famous is a movie with interesting characters about how life can turn into, possibilities and most of all, ALMOST FAMOUS MADE A SPOT IN 2000's BEST LIST.

    You CANNOT make friends with the rock stars. That's what's important. If you're a rock journalist - first, you will never get paid much. But you will get free records from the record company. And they'll buy you drinks, you'll meet girls, they'll try to fly you places for free, offer you drugs... I know. It sounds great. But they are not your friends. These are people who want you to write sanctimonious stories about the genius of the rock stars, and they will ruin rock and roll and strangle everything we love about it.

    Pretty watchable movie.
    And quite easy to review also.

    Wanna bet?

    - Sudden zombie boom;
    - film students catching zombies on camera;
    - zombies roaming around all over the place;
    - film students running away from zombies while catching them on camera;
    - normal people turning into zombies;
    - film students witnessing normal people turn into zombies while catching them on camera;
    - ...

    ... And so on and so forth.

    It's not a great film, as you may suspect already, but it isn't all that bad either.
    The amateur camera work adds a nice touch to it. Makes it feel a little different from other zombie movies and a bit more realistic.
    As far as realism can go in this genre, that is.
    But, yeah, the directing style helped the rating a great deal. And considering that I only gave it 3 stars... You can imagine how it isn't such a must-see movie.
    Watch it only if you have a tendency for enjoying movies with an amateur filming style.

    If you don't, then there's a pretty good chance you'll hate it.

    And if, on top of that, you don't usually tend to care for regular zombie movies all that much either... Then there's a pretty good chance you'll end up slitting your wrists halfway through it.

    Easy film to get into and enjoy. Brainless, stupid and beyond the capabilities of the cars used, but fun and easy going. I'm a bit of a petrol head myself so it was kind of annoying some of the things the showed the cars doing as it was just completely impossible. I don't really like cars with all the crap added onto them either. I prefer straight up European sports cars. The only car in the whole film that was impressive was the 1970 Dodge Charger. The performances of the film were typical of this genre. Fun and in your face but with no real substance, much like the film itself. Worth checking once if your into the genre but not for you if your not.

    Not a bad film but not exactly action packed and edge of your seat thrilling. It started off well with a decent plot, but when it really should have taken off, it stalled. Got boring towards the end but with just enough crap going on to make you keep watching. Tommy Lee Jones wasn't bad but the cover said his best performances since The Fugitive, and well, it was far from that. Ashley Judd always delivers as well. I suppose it was the cast that made this such a disappointment. When you hear their names you think of quality, and well, this just didn't live up to that. It had a lot of potential but didn't carry it through the whole of the film. Still, it was worth watching at least once, but don't be surprised if you are disappointed by it.

    I'm not usually into musicals but I actually enjoyed this film. Fun but with something serious to say at the same time. Hard to pull of in a lot of respects but Rent pulled it off nicely. The score wasn't bad at all either. The set up of the music and lyrics was a bit like they really were making it up as they went along as chorus and consistence in the lyrics didn't really exist. The performances were all excellent with some really lovable characters. Adam Pascal did a really brilliant job and his voice is amazing. You can just tell that Wilson Jermaine Heredia was made for his character as well. He was just born to play Angel. The rest of the cast did a really great job. I would recommend this film even if you're not usually into musicals. This one has a very urban and fresh feel to it that a lot of other musicals don't have.
