American History X (1998,  R)
American History X
Another brilliant performance by Edward Norton as a man just released from prison after serving three years for the murder of two black men that tried to break into his,and his family's home. This shows the events leading up to his capture and imprisonment, his time in jail and the effect it has had on his family. The amount of hatred that Norton's character shows for other races and later, his remorse for what he's done, makes this film so compelling and makes you realise that this level of hatred and ignorance in the world is very real. Also a great performance by Edward Furlong who plays Norton's brother, trying to follow in his,now old, footsteps which gets him in trouble in school.A powerful, compelling and moving story and a brilliant film.
5
Interview with the Vampire (1994,  R)
Interview with the Vampire
I have finally finished the book and although the descriptions in the book are much better than what could have been put on screen this is still a brilliant ataptation with brilliant performances and great imagery. The story is really brought to life here and although there are a few things missing that were in the book the film still feels complete.
6
Oldboy (2005,  R)
Oldboy
Brilliant Korean thriller and the second in Chan-wook Park's Vengeance trilogy.Oh Dae-su,a seemingly ordinary man is randomly taken prisoner and locked up for 15 years. On his eventual release he is given a mobile phone and wad of cash. When he later gets a call from the man that imprisoned him he finds out he has only a few days to find the reason why he was imprisoned and to get his revenge. It's a great story with brilliant performaces, great music and its also well directed by Park;the sex and violence is never glamourised,it's just there, and theres some great shots as we see Dae-su,in an amazing performance by Min-sik-Choi, go from a confused and upset prisoner,to the angry, revenge driven man he is on his release to a man struggling with whats happening to him as he tries to find the reasons behind his capture.A great,if disturbing twist at the end to.A motherfucking masterpiece!
7
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984,  R)
A Nightmare on Elm Street

8
Sin City (2005,  R)
Sin City
I love pretty much everything about this film. The story, the colour, the direction, the screenplay, the acting style. The Marv character is great,as are all the others really. Its just a great, very eye-catching, clever, action/black comedy-ish thriller.
9
Night of the Living Dead (1968,  Unrated)
Night of the Living Dead
Classic. The film that pretty much invented the zombie genre.Romero's brilliant direction keeps you on the edge of your seat as more and more zombies start gathering around the house that a small group of people have barricaded themselves in,as we see the people in the house becoming more scared until the almost inevitable climax.A great ending that was controversial at the time as it was original.
10
The Devil's Rejects (2005,  R)
The Devil's Rejects
Horror films had gotten a bit lame for a while. All these films came out copying Scream and even before that people seemed scared to shock. Not Rob Zombie! With this and the one before,House of a 1000 Corpses,he brought old school style horror back to life.Great ending in this one to!
11
The Crow (1994,  R)
The Crow
A great horror/thriller.Brandon Lee is brilliant as the rocker who comes back for revenge after him and his girlfriend were killed a year earlier by the local gang. Some great moments of black comedy, drama and action along with a great soundtrack make this a very entertaining film and after watching you can't help but think that Brandon Lee could have gone on to great things after this.A great film.
12
Seven (Se7en) (1995,  R)
Seven (Se7en)
This film has been so influential since its release in 1995,you see it's style in many horror/thrillers that come out today.Brad Pitt and Morgan freeman put in brilliant performances as the two detectives looking for a man committing murders that mirror the seven deadly sins. You never see any torture scenes or real hardcore gore but you see, or hear about, the effects it has had so it doesn't take much to imagine whats happened to the victims. The last 20 minutes or so are brilliant as Kevin Spacey arrives and pretty much steals the entire film with a great performance as killer,John Doe.An unsettling, morbid ending to.Great story, well made and well acted.Bit of a classic!
13
True Romance (1993,  R)
True Romance
Great actors giving great performances and a good story.Gritty, funny, gory, exciting. All at the same time!

17

Scream
Very Clever.A spoof but not in that over the top comedy way as the characters are horror movie fans.Scary, funny, edge of your seat stuff and i wanted to watch it again as soon as it finished!
18
Shaun of the Dead (2004,  R)
Shaun of the Dead
A brilliant film, more of a homage to zombie films than the spoof people thought it was or would be.Fucking hilarious!
19
Wayne's World (1992,  PG-13)
Wayne's World
A comedy classic from a while ago. This film is so much fun to watch.Great lines,a good cast featuring Mike Myers,Rob Lowe,Lara Flynn Boyle and Tia Carrere, not to mention Dana Carvey's brilliant performance as Garth, and a nice little story to get into.Plus some cool music and a performance from the legendary Alice Cooper.Watching this took me back to when i was about 12 and watched it religiously.Fun,funny and just great!
20
Wayne's World 2 (1993,  PG-13)
Wayne's World 2
One of the greatest sequel's ever!In this one,Wayne has to keep an eye on dodgy record producer Bobby Conway as he tries, not only to launch Cassandra's musical career, but to steal her off Wayne. The stress of that, along with Wayne and Garth putting on their own rock concert leads to some brilliant and hilarious consequences/situations.Zang!
21

Ringu ( Ring) (1998,  Unrated)
Ringu ( Ring)
A modern horror classic.A great, frightening story. The Sadako character could go on to become one of the classic all time horror villains.
36
Planet Terror (Grindhouse Presents: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror) (2007,  R)
Planet Terror (Grindhouse Presents: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror)
Well,i had a feeling i'd enjoy this film but not as much as i actually did! It's just mental. So gory but so much fun at the same time.Rose McGowan is brilliant as stripper turned world saving sexy bitch,Cherry Darling, but then you get the feeling that everyone was enjoying themselves, with great turns from Bruce Willis,Freddy Rodriguez,Marley Shelton,Michael Bein,Josh Brolin etc all fighting to save the world from zombies after a bio-weapon is released into the atmosphere. This is up there with one of the goriest films i have seen and also one of the best horrors i have seen. The missing reel idea is really cool,as is the grainy picture, giving the idea that this films been played a hundred times at a hundred different cinemas. It's just B-movie style madness to sit back and enjoy.
37
Hellraiser (1987,  R)
Hellraiser
A scary and iconic horror film. When a married couple buy a new house, the wife gets the shock of her life when her former lover, her husbands brother, seemingly returns from the dead and asks for her help to bring him back to the mortal world after he used a special box in an attempt to taste extreme pleasure and pain and was faced with a group of demons called Cenobites. He needs human blood to be brought back but the woman still agrees to help.Plenty of shocks and scares, along with gore and clever use of effects make this one of the all time horror classics.
38
Cidade de Deus, (City of God) (2003,  R)
Cidade de Deus, (City of God)
The fact that this film is based on true events and what things are like in the slums of Rio make this a bit scary. Its a compelling, effecting story of hope, tragedy and freedom. Its got some great performances and was brilliantly directed.A great film.
39
The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
Well, although i'm not going to go on and on about how great this film is it is pretty fucking great!Another great script and another film brilliantly directed by Christopher Nolan with plenty of action and great performances. It was good to see Gary Oldmans character expanded on,he gets to do so much more in this than in Batman Begins.Aaron Eckhart is brilliant as Harvey Dent and his transformation into Two-face is pretty scary with some horrible make up.But the best performance,as everyone knows by now,is Heath Ledger's as The Joker. He manages to be creepy, scary, insane but at times very funny. He IS The Joker. His scenes are the films best, its an amazing performance and one which could get him that oscar.

Of course,Christian Bale is great as Batman, trying to clean up Gotham City in the grip of The Jokers crime wave and, eventually, doubting himself, questioning himself, his motives and his future as Batman, which makes this much more powerfully effective than say, Iron Man.A great film, maybe this years best although its still early days.I'm not sure if Nolan should do another Batman as i don't think he could top this.
A great achievment by him,and everyone else involved in this film and just a brilliant film.
40
Re-Animator (1985,  R)
Re-Animator
Fucking hell, god knows how i missed this cult horror classic since it came out in 1985! Medical student Herbert West joins a new university. Not only does he seem very weird,he's created a fluid/formula that brings the dead back to life. After West gets another student involved they both go to the nearby morgue to test out the formula with hazardous results. This is gory, scary in parts, fun and funny. You know you've seen it all when you see a severed head go down on a woman!A great horror film.
41
The Wicker Man (1973,  R)
The Wicker Man
I first saw this film when i was much younger and didn't have a clue what was going on;random songs,Christopher Lee in a dress, people in animal masks. When your very young it's all a bit confusing. But after watching it again i've realised its a bit of a horror classic! Those things that seemed weird before are actually quite creepy and the ending, which is distressing,is a piece of iconic cinema.Brilliant performances by Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee to.Plus, top marks to Britt Ekland for getting naked and singing while hitting her bedroom wall in some sort of pagan booty call.If i was Ed i would have been in there like a shot!
42
[Rec] (2007,  R)
[Rec]
Fuck Me,i'd heard all the hype surrounding this film and liked what i'd heard about the idea behind it but when i watched it i couldn't believe how much it freaked me out. This was like the first time i saw Nightmare on Elm Street 1 when i was younger or whenever i watch the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, that adrenalin rush feeling, heart pounding, even a few minutes after the films over. The fact that its quite short is what makes it better, almost like real life footage or something! The zombies are fucking freaky and the the whole thing is just great.Definately one of the best horror films i have ever seen, maybe just one of the best films overall.
43
Dawn of the Dead (1979,  R)
Dawn of the Dead
Scary and satirical with plenty of blood and guts!
44
Day of the Dead (1985,  Unrated)
Day of the Dead

45
Back to the Future (1985,  PG)
Back to the Future
Its just a classic.Great idea, brilliantly made and funny!
46
Back to the Future Part II (1989,  PG)
Back to the Future Part II
Just as good as the first!
47
Halloween (1978,  R)
Halloween
The daddy of all slasher films.I hadn't seen this for years up until the other night but was instantly reminded why i love it.The tension and suspense built up throughout and in particular the last 15-20 mins is brilliant.A classic, one of the best horrors of all time.
48
Children of Men (2006,  R)
Children of Men
Bleak, depressing but also thought provoking and intelligent. This vision of the future from Alfonso Cuaron really does get you thinking but it's also a dramatic action thriller that gets you on the edge of your seat.In 2027, the world's women have become infertile due to the state of the world around them. But when one pregnant woman is discovered it's up to Clive Owen,a disillusioned goverment agent,to get her out of the country to safety.Great idea, brilliantly executed, well acted and directed in a real unapolagetic way by Alfonso.Brilliant film.
49
Funny Games (2008,  R)
Funny Games
This was one of the most uncomfortable viewing experiences ever.Part drama, part horror, part black comedy about a family going on a two week vacation at their holiday home in a posh area and getting terrorised by two friends. The whole point of this film is to look at society's obsession with violence, what's to shocking and how far is too far in terms of entertainment.Great performances from Naomi Watts and Michael Pitt as well as decent turns from Tim Roth and Brady Corbet. This could be seen as pointless if you don't get it and i'm sure its been described as "torture porn" by many people. But if you get the message(which is the most important thing),and admittedly, just enjoy watching people get bullied and humiliated, then this is brilliant!
50
The Matrix (1999,  R)
The Matrix
Its a shame the other two were so hit and miss cos this ones a bit of a classic.Guns, kung-fu,good soundtrack and the whole idea behind it is great. They shoulda worked on the theory more in the other two instead of just going CGI mad!
51
Batman Begins (2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
I had to watch this again before The Dark Knight and i'm glad i did.A great performance by Christian Bale as we see the origins of Bruce Wayne and the man that would later become Batman. Liam Neeson is also great in this although i'm not sure about his place as this films main villain,it was good to see him training Bruce Wayne and helping him realise what could be his destiny. It was also good to see Cillian Murphy as the Scarecrow.Great film, great script and another great piece of directing by Christopher Nolan.
52
The Fountain (2006,  PG-13)
The Fountain
Sometimes you watch a film and when it's finished you wonder why it's taken you so long to get around to watching something so brilliant. This was one of those films!I'd heard about it and was interested but only the other night did i get the chance to sit down and watch this amazing piece of cinema.
This won't appeal to all film fans. It's a sci-fi love story for a start,it's pretty deep stuff but if you stick with it it could end up being one of the most rewarding film experiences you'll ever see.Great performances from Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz, Jackman as doctor Tom Creo, trying to find a cure for his wifes(Weisz) cancer and save the woman he loves.
It's visually stunning, director Darren Aronofsky taking us to 16th century Spain, the present day AND the future, with the future elements being particularly stunning and despite the special effects of that period the film never loses any of it's emotional impact which is credit to the actors, Weisz and Jackman creating the perfect chemistry of a couple completely in love, with Jackmans frustrations and desperation and Weisz' acceptances and discovery of death and rebirth coming to the fore.
Credit must also go to Clint Mansell who's score is brilliant throughout, his music so fitting to all the moods within the film.
Overall,an original, striking film that although may be seen as to deep or even pretentious by some is a thought provoking and intelligent tale of morality, life, death, rebirth and ultimately, love.
53
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008,  PG-13)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Captivating drama about a man who ages backwards. Meaning he's born with all the attributes of someone in their 80's and gets younger throughout his life. Obviously this makes things seem very strange and different to a young/old Benjamin and when he falls in love with local girl Daisy, and Daisy to notices something different about him, you just know Benjamins life is going to be one of great interest and emotion. We see Benjamin living as normal life as possible in 50's New Orleans as he gets a job working on a boat, but sooner or later he meets up with Daisy and also, unknown to Benjamin initially, his father. David Fincher has done it again. This is a great film with a brilliant story, a great cast and great ideas running throughout.
54
In Bruges (2008,  R)
In Bruges
Blacker than black comedy with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as hitmen Ray and Ken, who are sent to Bruges, after a problematic previous hit, to await details of their next mission by their boss Harry, played brilliantly by Ralph Fiennes. But when Ken is told by Harry what the mission involves,he's very reluctant to take part....
Colin Farrell is brilliant as struggling hitman Ray,who gets into plenty of scrapes during the trip.Gleeson is also great as the older, more mature hitman Ken,who wants to sight see and enjoy their time in Bruges and not just go out,get drunk and meet women like Ray!The style of comedy and the amount of fucks(as in the word, unfortunately)and cunts used in the film might not be to everybody's taste but this a well written film that can be dramatic and also very funny,in the darkest possible way.The ending is quite sad but also fitting. If you like well written and well acted films about hitmen in Bruges that swear alot and make politically incorrect comments this could be the best film you see all year!
Just saw this again so had to re-review it as i enjoyed it even more second time round!
55
Out of Sight (1998,  R)
Out of Sight
Brilliant crime thriller with George Clooney as bank robber Jack Foley who,in an escape from prison with his friend Buddy, take a female federal marshall hostage and drive off. It's during this journey that Foley and the federal marshall, played by Jennifer Lopez, find they are attracted to one another and although Lopez gets away, this make things difficult during the police/FBI's hunt for Foley, especially as they have to deal with the other dodgy characters Foley got involved with in his time in jail. This has some great dialogue and is occassionally funny, gritty and you can feel a real chemistry between Clooney and Lopez. Two great performances from those guys to.As well as Ving Rhames and the ever dependable Don Cheadle. There's even a brief appearance from Samuel L. Jackson at the end which gives the film a great send of. Cool, smart and witty from start to finish.
56
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007,  R)
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
A brilliant thriller with Ethan Hawke and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as two brothers who come up with the perfect crime in order to make some quick, much needed cash. But when the plan takes a turn for the worst, the brothers' lives come crashing down around them.Very well written and directed with brilliant performances from the whole cast. This is a clever, riveting tale of betrayal and morality.
57
Predator (1987,  R)
Predator
This is an Arnie classic!Only he could defeat an almost invisible, seemingly invincible alien!
58
The Silence of the Lambs (1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
Great film and an amazing performance by Anthont Hopkins.
59
Dark City (1998,  R)
Dark City
Brilliant sci-fi thriller that i hadn't seen for years and completely forgot how great it is! When a man wakes up suddenly in a bath he has no idea where he is andwhats going on but finds he posses some interesting mind powers. But obviously being freaked out he's determined to find out whats going on and this includes run-ins with the mysterious "strangers" as well as a doctor who claims he can help him despite being involved with the strangers. The sets, ranging from 1940's to 70's backdrops, cars and fashion(50's) make this a very interesting film to watch but its the imaginative story and strong performances from Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland and the always great and gorgeous Jennifer Connelley, as well as an early film appearance from the lovely Melissa Gearge as a sexy whore, that make this a classic.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil (2009,  Unrated)
Anvil! The Story of Anvil
A funny and touching look at 80's metal band Anvils' slow but probably timely comeback. This documentry shows how the band hit their peak in the early-mid eighties before almost disappearing into obscurity. With singer Steve "Lips" Kudlow now working for a catering company but keeping the band going in his spare time and drummer Rob Reiner spending his time painting and looking back at what could have been, it seems Anvils time has come and gone. But after a european fan organises a tour, albeit a disaster, it kind of kick starts the band into action again and we see their journey as they attempt to keep the band alive and make a new album. This film is at times funny, sad and exciting as we see the occassionaly deluded Lips bang on about the past and still making it, he proves to be an endearing character, as well as clips of the band performing and profiles of other band members past and present. Throw in interviews with Lars Ulrich, Slash, Lemmy, Scott Ian and Tom Araya and you've got a great film that not just metal fans, but everyone, can enjoy.
61
Inglourious Basterds (2009,  R)
Inglourious Basterds
I have been waiting ages for this and wasn't disappointed! A great Period/Black Comedy/thriller war film that has Quentin Tarantino's trademark dialogue and twisted humour running throughout, in amongst some brilliant performances, a great, building plot, soundtrack and the odd moment of strong gore. In nazi-occupied France during World War 2, a plot is hatched to kill Hitler and all his high command in the Third Reich. Once a team of Nazi hating, Jewish soldiers, named The Basterds, hear of the plot, they plan to get involved in the most brutal way possible! The way this film builds throughout makes the film so compelling and the two and a half hours fly by. Typically of Tarantino, the film is split into chapters, where we see and get to know the characters who are all strong in their own right, and as great as Brad Pitt is as Lt. Aldo Raine, head of The Basterds, Christopher Waltz puts in an amazing performance as Col. Hans Lando of the SS, he can be calm and collective, angry and threatening, then oddly funny in about the space of a minute! His ability to switch so effectively between French, German and English is impressive to. Saying that, this is full of great performances and is simply a great film. Another masterpiece from Tarantino.
62
Dead Snow (Død snø) (2009,  Unrated)
Dead Snow (Død snø)
I knew this film would be good but not as good as this! Its your typical horror movie fare; a group of friends go for a fun filled trip and get terrorised by a bunch of bastards. This time the bastards are NAZI ZOMBIES! Plenty of gore, scares and humour, along with the brilliant snow filled back-drop, keep this action packed horror going. Add a rocking soundtrack and you've got a brilliant horror movie.
63
The Thing (1982,  R)
The Thing
This 80's horror from John Carpenter has so many influential moments, special/gore effects-wise that its almost to much! When a scientific expedition is interrupted by a group of people in a hellicopter shooting at one of the teams dogs with no real explaination, things seem a little weird. When the dog later mutates into some alien creature type thing and attacks the other dogs it seems to whiole crew could become infected if they can't find and stop whats happening. A remake of a 50's horror when remakes were few and far between, this is rightly hailed as a classic.
64
Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in) (2008,  R)
Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in)
A great vampire film and the most original for years.
A bullied 12 year old boy, Oskar, falls for new neighbour, Eli, who is actually a 200 year old vampire. The film pays alot of attention to Oskar and his trouble with the bully's at his school and then his growing relationship with Eli. This makes the violent scenes even more disturbing and definately adds to the atmosphere, as does the snow filled backdrop of Sweden, giving the film a cold, bleak but at times beautiful feel, almost like a fairytale. There are some pretty gory and disturbing moments but there are also some tender moments with Oskar and Eli to and a brilliant, quite shocking ending. A great film, a great adaptation from the book and easily the best and most original vampire/horror movie for a while.
65
Dawn of the Dead (2004,  R)
Dawn of the Dead
This a really good remake.Really exciting stuff, lots of action and gore and, obviously, zombies!
66
Mulholland Drive (2001,  R)
Mulholland Drive
Another one where Naomi Watts is great!Think its her first big film actually.Obviously its strange because its David Lynch but if you give it a chance and think about it afterwoods its well worth it!
67
21 Grams (2003,  R)
21 Grams
Ok, this has been out a while but i only saw it quite recently.Benicio del toro is brilliant as usual and i think Naomi Watts proves shes one of the best new actresses around. Its interesting the way it all ties together.
68
Hard Candy (2006,  R)
Hard Candy
A brilliant, often hard-hitting and horrific drama/thriller about a 14 year old girl who meets up with a 38 year old man who she met on the internet and suspects is a paedophille, and after convincing him to take her back to his apartment exacts revenge in quite a psychopathic way! This a very well shot and directed film, especially considering nearly everything takes place in one location and the two central performances by Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson are amazing. You are constantly asking yourself "is he really a pervert or not?", "is she doing the right thing or is she just insane?", throughout the film which is great because it keeps you glued to the screen and makes everything so much more effective/effecting.A film so brutal but at the same time so compelling that its just breathtaking.
