    The Road The Road
    by Mark
Bleak, depressing road movie based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Cormac McCarthy about survivors of the apocalypse . With only the slightest hair of a story, this film is a fascinating study of the strong bond between a father and son. Actors Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee who play the central pair, are compelling and elevate what could have just been just a variation of 28 Days Later. The pacing can be extremely lethargic at times, but for those who are willing to be drawn in by the hypnotic gloom of this post apocalyptic world, the rewards are substantial.

Bjork, an Icelander, plays a young Czech woman who has immigrated to the United States in hope of a better life for herself and her son.

A most unconventional film. One that draws from old styles yet remains avant garde. Sad and utterly mesmerizing.

Hey, you should really see this! Don't try to learn more about this movie if it's the first time you hear about it. Just rent it on dvd, sit comfortably on your sofa and enjoy a nice dvd night.

One of the few movies that becomes better and better everytime I watch it.

I loved the plot and the atmosphere.

The performances were decent. Especially Richard Gere's performance was pretty good.

This movie is like a wine, which you have to taste many times until you decide if you like it or not and in the end becomes one of your favorites.

arguably a seminal 80's film or a forgotten pearl if you'd like..
basically, avoid the plot description and you'll be fine because a plot description like here is inaccurate at times when it comes to art-house treasures.

Jabor is really one of the last Cinema Novo followers even though his full filmography doesn't reveal it so...having not made a feature film from early 90's,i can't believe this film is vanished from even hardcore cinema critics.

and yes,i adored both individuals, both cries and whispers and miseries.....but Fernanda Torres was something else...she was like a wave of mutilation,a feverish beast,a petite leopard scratching the bare floors, walls, even the air she breathed...for fuck's sake,i can just recommend the whole film for 5 crucial solo minutes of hers!

here is the link in case anyone wants it:

    by Dimitris
    A live-action stage play.
No,I'm serious, the spotlight belongs to simply two characters who simultaneously ravish, mock, joke, blaze, torture (need I continue?) each other,a no-bars exploration to a recently divorced couple's systematic breakdown. It's not about the quarrels yet Jabor's flourishing video-projections leading to talkative realities are the concept after all,of deception and alternative lies, and they're not exhausting at all!
Chacon may be the experienced acting force but the solo tango is Fernanda Torres' privilege who could probably act the whole film by herself!

The Blind Side The Blind Side
    by Mark
Heartwwarming tale about a suburban Tenneessee couple who takes in a homeless teen and how they change each other's life for the better. Given that plot, you'd expect an overly saccharine TV movie style drama. However, the action is surprisingly restrained in its sentiment. True, there is a certain organization to the script that seems overly pat. All of the lead characters seem almost too perfect to be real people. Yet this is a true story, one based on football player, Michael Oher, who was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2009. Given that, the story take on a dramatic weight that makes the events genuinely touching. The compassion the Tuohy family demonstrates here, as well as the quiet integrity of Michael Oher, is admirable. Overall, a straightforward and honest film that is one of the best sports dramas in recent years.

Be it for the stop-motion, for the stellar cast, the quirky story or Wes Anderson's magic touch of understatment and off-beat humour, this movie is a must-see !
Fantastic Mr. Fox Fantastic Mr. Fox
    by Henrik
God knows I love Wes Anderson, and again he surprises me with a "fantastic" movie. Roald Dahl's story is altered and twisted and filled to the brim with off-beat humour and geeky quirkyness typical for Wes' movies. The cast is, as always, a who is who of serious acting and George Clooney delivers a dry and subtle performance. Like many of Wes' movies, this one is very conceptual and feels more like a movie sculpture for all in it that is meticoulously composed and structured. Stop-motion is an amazing discipline and I am always happy if someone picks it up and saves it from oblivion. If you care Waterfalls made of clingfilm, this is for you. The whole movie kind of conjures a classic FX feeling with lots of make-shift special effects and incredible love for detail. The story is rarely knee-slap hilarious but casts a constant smirk on your face, as the insane story unfolds. Personally, I prefer Anderson's live-action movies, because he does not use his trademark moments of nothingness in Fantastic Mr. Fox, as it clearly would not fit into an animated movie. Thus, the movie feels a bit more playful than his other movies while lacking the former's melancholic air of universal thoughtfulness.

Highly recommended, this movie should appeal to everyone.

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra
    by Mark
Idiotic action thriller pits an elite counter-terrorist team code-named G.I. Joe against the evil forces of the organization known as Cobra. This noisy special effects extravaganza bears little resemblance to the Hasbro toy of the 60s and is based rather on the Marvel comic book series, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, which ran from 1982 to 1994. No one expects the script based on a toy franchise to be Shakespeare. Let's face it, the cartoon series had better character development. What's so shocking, however, is how bad the computer animation appears. There are a lot of visual effects in this film and most of it looks fake. Two positives: The hilariously affected style in which Cobra Commander delivers his lines throughout the film and the amusing way complicated problems are presented and solved within seconds. These make the film tolerable, but just barely.

not necessarily a two-folder film with Bassae but it's obvious the Myth of Méditerranée excels the momentary of its existence.

this may have been directed/released before Bassae nevertheless, the charismatic elaboration, the vast details, the minimalistic nourishment of every frame give the impression of a solitary work of art, scraping civilizations (Egyptian artifacts,Greek monuments,Spanish traditions) or interacting with the folklore of each culture in Southern Europe, variable like a photographer.

i really don't know where these films could be found other than torrent downloads in Pirate Bay (YouTube has another Pollet short but without English subtitles) so i do hope anyone who does retrieve them from somewhere shouldn't miss a chance for an example of a live cine-essay.

this is a prologue(or a prequel) to Pollet's heavily experimental Méditerranée and yet,no one can deny the illuminating force this 9 minute excerpt contains.

it's basically a "trip" to the ruins of a temple dedicated to Apollo and located in Bassae of Arcadia,Southern Greece.
Pollet focuses in the lost corridors of that relatively small temple, draining life from any rotten portion, dreaming that a giant like Apollo is still resting till he breaths back again.

it IS about longing,no doubt on that,it's also filled with voice-over,so i'm pretty sure this element alongside the "poetry" of this short-scale essay will infinitely tire some...i'll offer my thoughts on his other project too.
