Disney's A Christmas Carol - PG Zemeckis adds to his store of holiday films, still hoping for "it's a wonderful life"'s american family favorite status. first there was "the polar express" with it's emphasis on the santa legend, and now (almost as an apology for such pagan posterings) a return to good ol' Christian and English sensibilities. the art is the story here tho, ever remarkable, as Zemeckis retools the old tale expanding the spectral side of it and, with that, the dreamlike fear of falling (as in from grace). carrey continues to stretch his career spanning Jerry Lewis impersonation in another attempt to tackle the fortress that is the memory of Jimmy Stewart. well worth the visit as this time i believe ol' Robert has done it. The Box - PG-13 imagine if the adam and eve story and the twilight zone had a baby and you've got "the box", a taut weird study in the moral and personal ramifications of selfishness. langella rules the day (hello!) as a mysterious force of nature - so greasy you can feel the grease on your fingers whenever he's onscreen, diaz drops the easy strumpet next door routine and grows up finally (and is good at it), while marsden is the dumb wondering stolid adam trying to put their humptydumpty life together again. definitely worth your time. 2012 - PG-13 modern updating the old chase serials of silent movie days ("help! help, help!"), only the bad guy doing the chasing here is an one hellacious monster of an earthquake and then there's all the rip-snortin' that high tech CGI can do, isn't there? a thrill ride, yah, no more, no less, so don't go looking for such frills as "sense" or "logic", 'kay? The Remains of the Day - PG i've seen this before...but having just finished the book itself for the first time, sumptuous in it's love for the much harried of late English language, i can't wait to see it again... November 2, 2009

The Wizard of Oz - G the greatest musical ever made, uh, science fiction, uh, fantasy, uh, romance, uh, oh...nevermind, this one's essential americiana for the baby boomer set and it's resonance resonates far more than my poor command of the language can give justice to. let's just enjoy! Astro Boy (AstroBoy) - PG nicky cage and donny sutherland endeavor mightily but cannot save this from tired mediocre writing... October 28, 2009

Paranormal Activity - R this one builds slowly, setting up the premise: young good-looking couple, great sex, promising future, only there's one catch. the woman has a little problem from childhood days, hard to speak about and who would believe it?
the theater i was in was stone quiet at the end and the crowd tiptoed out as if...as if someone would hear them.
or something...

A Serious Man - R the coen bros. usual point ad infinitum is that people are stupid (hey...that's like 99.9% of all stand-up!). herein they gratefully mark new trail, opining that a do-nothing life can be as dangerous to everyone as a stupid one. their hero, stuhlbarg, stumbles from one disaster to the next (suburban jewry as interesting backdrop) wondering what he should do...but does nada. only when he decides to chance action does he (and we) feel anywhere near better. Surrogates - PG-13 a by-the-numbers detective thriller with a lil sci-fi thrown in to spice the mix. in the future, y'see, we act out our lives thru these sophisticated automatons, robots, like in a vidgame...only somebody has found a way to kill people by killing their robots. enter willis, worldweary gumshoe, himself wondering if something human's not lost in the trade, determined to find the killer... Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant - PG-13 a little bit of teenage fun in the night, the wish fulfillment answer to the teenage question "what if you got really cool friends?"...salma hayek sizzles of course (and when does she not?) October 28, 2009

Amelia - PG October 22, 2009

Pandorum - R like frankenstein's monster, like a film school project, this one's a trip into the dark cribbed from...but that's half the fun of this film, figuring out where they cribbed from ("that's not unca fester, but that's his nose on that guy, sure enuff..."). don't be discouraged tho, as this is still a worthy halloween season contender... Zombieland - R "...betcha didn't never think of killin' somebody THAT way, didcha?" not a film, but a vidgame (about killing, duh), but a fun vidgame nonetheless. the lead (eisenberg) survives the film unfortunately, dammit, despite all my wishing and hoping. harrelson, stone, breslin and murray shine. The Invention of Lying - PG-13 another star produced flick, this one (unlike "couples retreat") has in it somewhere the conceit of trying to make a real film. unfortunately, well, even the best laid plans, eh? still, look for fionnula flanagan's bit part as the mom...better that most of the piece. and gervais...he's convinced me that he not here for merely a lark, but ya gotta find decent writers (i know, i know, like saying discover a cure for cancer, but still)... Couples Retreat - PG-13 no...vaughn produced this too...but still: no. October 15, 2009

Stalag 17 - Unrated okay yeah, there was a war, with fighting, and death, and prisoners of war, and then there were movies about all of that. wilder throws all that in because it's expected...but why not take a look at an off-limits subject as well, namely: american men, and w/o the typical dame thrown in to gum up the perspective with all of that sticky, changing-their-mind estrogen stuff. and thus wilder's movie, a boy's backyard fantasy sure about tuff guys in war ("this time i want to be the spy!") tinly masking an examination of said tuff guys (think: "the women" only not), and what they're really made of...
