Pandorum - R like frankenstein's monster, like a film school project, this one's a trip into the dark cribbed from...but that's half the fun of this film, figuring out where they cribbed from ("that's not unca fester, but that's his nose on that guy, sure enuff..."). don't be discouraged tho, as this is still a worthy halloween season contender... Zombieland - R "...betcha didn't never think of killin' somebody THAT way, didcha?" not a film, but a vidgame (about killing, duh), but a fun vidgame nonetheless. the lead (eisenberg) survives the film unfortunately, dammit, despite all my wishing and hoping. harrelson, stone, breslin and murray shine. The Invention of Lying - PG-13 another star produced flick, this one (unlike "couples retreat") has in it somewhere the conceit of trying to make a real film. unfortunately, well, even the best laid plans, eh? still, look for fionnula flanagan's bit part as the mom...better that most of the piece. and gervais...he's convinced me that he not here for merely a lark, but ya gotta find decent writers (i know, i know, like saying discover a cure for cancer, but still)... Stalag 17 - Unrated okay yeah, there was a war, with fighting, and death, and prisoners of war, and then there were movies about all of that. wilder throws all that in because it's expected...but why not take a look at an off-limits subject as well, namely: american men, and w/o the typical dame thrown in to gum up the perspective with all of that sticky, changing-their-mind estrogen stuff. and thus wilder's movie, a boy's backyard fantasy sure about tuff guys in war ("this time i want to be the spy!") tinly masking an examination of said tuff guys (think: "the women" only not), and what they're really made of... Love Happens - PG-13 self-help guru eckhart has a secret: he's the one who most needs his own advice, and he ain't listenin'. a shocker. ain't i supposed to say "spoiler alert" first? oh dammit. eckhart roughly manages to engage as a soul in torment while trying to be upbeat, while aniston regretfully continues to languish as merely the projector screen for the lust of america (and she's better than that...i hope. i would face her off against sandra bullock in a something like "all about eve", now THAT would be hot!) dan fogler and john carroll lynch prove that solid character work is what holds many a film together. and a parrot almost steals the movie, say no more. Jennifer's Body - R horror cinema always resurges in tough economic times...i wonder if there could be a connection...? this quaint little trinket speculates about just how bad the old chestnut of "experienced" girls claiming virginity can go wrong...with brief teasers along the way of the starlets "gettin' jiggy wit it" until the big face-off at the end. innocent spooky teenage fun. boo. megan fox is gonna come get you...it's a dvd goldmine waiting to happen. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs - PG much better than one might expect, and more adult as well, the story's central theme is simply the desire for paternal affection. it's the zany direction taken to get from point A to point B that makes for a lively tale. plus you've never seen as many fun considerations of what to do with the whole planet's fav obsession. All About Steve - PG-13 a very strange tale that begins as yet another summer romantic comedy but somehow turns into a weird kinda salute to uniqueness (read: nerdiness). ms. bullock endeavors mightily to make creepy-stalker-types okey-dokey (only if they happen to save a your run-of-the-mill everyday endangered child while they're out stalking), but still I left the theater shaking disorientation from my head.
