| Lord of the Flies - Unrated | a story about some little people on a little planet (not far from wherever you are now), and how they learned how to love one another by banding together and killing whomever was dumb enough to stand in their way...sound familiar?...no, it's not your grade school homeroom, it's some brit kids on a island! chilling in the implications that we possibly aren't nice people. | August 15, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Footlight Parade - Unrated | August 11, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| The Ugly Truth - R | lacking anything really fresh to say, perhaps we can say the old stuff in a vulgar way...think they'll pay for that? tell you what, let's package this gem with almost likable "stars"...eh, and voila, summer cheesefest. | August 2, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Funny People - R | apatow's revelation: comics are evil, still mad at what you did to them way back when (i already know, you didn't do nothin, but that's exactly what you did). their revenge: they get you to laugh at them while they are in fact laughing at you, you stupid ****, ha-ha, but please like them anyway. twisted psychologies as social icons? let take a look, shall we? | August 2, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Miss March - R | July 28, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| Despicable Me - Unrated | July 17, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| The Proposal - PG-13 |
sandra tries, ryan tries, betty white tries, and they almost make a movie...almost...and i went in wanting to love this, but, oh well, maybe next time, eh sandra?
how much say-so did disney have in this, one wonders? |

| Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Ice Age 3) - PG | the theater i saw this in was filled w/families, w/kids ("er, that's children, bunkie, only goats have kids, get it!?!"), and so i got this thru their eyes...and they were happy. me? ehhh, yah sure, it was ok. predictable. lotsa underlining morals about good, positive stuff, i guess, y'know, family and stuff...babies are good. that ain't so bad, is it? | July 12, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Public Enemies - R | why admiration for the american gangster film? could it be that at some level some unhappy miscreants entertain the vile thought that the whole ball of wax, society, is a complete and total sham, bogus rigamarole, and so love the idea of those who blatantly flaunt prig tea party cookie/cracker conventions? so the gangster film is valued commodity. a howl over the fence from your friends to come and run wild (or "are you gonna do EVERYTHING yer parents tell ya?!?"). this film (like practically all of them since "public enemy" and maybe that one too) knows that very well and steps to the plate...and calls her shot. and it's a home run. bingo. everything works. it's all good. | July 11, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo (The Gospel According to St. Matthew) - Unrated | July 7, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| Merrily We Go to Hell - Unrated | July 1, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| Game 6 - R | packed with heavy hitting weight in front and behind the camera, this quirky new york piece that looks at living with lowered expectations and failure as a way of life somehow just fails to connect by that much...but still is worth a view. | June 29, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Stan Lee's Mutants, Monsters & Marvels - Unrated | June 28, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| Ŕ l'intérieur (Inside) - R | June 25, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| Brüno (Bruno) - R | June 25, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| Kill Cruise - R | it's like watching what used to be abc's movie-of-the-week all over again...with partial nudity. a bit of the old slap-and-tickle tease, then cue the heavy music...what joy. patsy kensit succeeds in eliciting i-wish-she-was-dead emotions. | June 25, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Man of Aran - Unrated | June 25, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| A Shot in the Dark - PG | June 23, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| Santa Fe Trail - Unrated | along w/ the always magnetic flynn and de havilland pairing, and costarring an unforgettable ex-president, this curious pre-ww2 piece about the pre-civil war (or "the wo-ah between the states!" as granny clampett used to quip) days is curiously and definitively southern in politics, altho that in no way detracts from the stirring action. max steiner contributes a rousing score, but raymond massey's john brown is the hot engine that drives this car. | June 20, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Gidget - Unrated | a real bit of you-had-to-have-been-there americana...the earnest yet perky late sandra dee (doris day, only younger), old school hunky-w/o-the-steroids james darren, and cliff robertson as the big kahuna (yep, this is where that expression enters the american lexicon, baby!), together again for the first time in the 1960's first coming of age beach story starring and starting america's dream infatuation with the girl/midget | June 17, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Beat the Devil - Unrated | with more fast shuffling than any fred and ginger effort, and much like "the usual suspects" wherein all are guilty until...well, forget about 'em not being guilty is all, and with a wink and a smile tossed in for spice, this is a bankers holiday for all involved and it shows. jennifer jones nearly steals the show and would if there wasn't such stiff competition. not an honest scene in this stew of lovable rogues out for a con. | June 17, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Shutter Island - Unrated | June 15, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - R | even tho i heard bad things about this ("how can they remake a classic...it's an OUTRAGE!!!") still i went and enjoyed senor mister's scott's usual blend of fast edits and bouncing camerawork combined with the "you can't handle the truth!" acting styles of senor misters' washington and travolta. why remake when the original was okey-dokey? because it introduces the tale to a new generation, doh, and this is a good intro. maybe some will now want to see the original. as well, forgotten by the critics, is the very intentional love letter to new york the city...and not the big money flash and sparkle, but literally from under the gutter. | June 15, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Food, Inc. - PG | June 13, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| Buttleman (Harold Buttleman, Daredevil Stuntman) - Unrated | just because you got a dream don't make you nothin' special. an introspective indie about an modern day everyman who never considers thinking outside his box and the price that entails. | June 9, 2009 | N/A |
