Virus - R an alien intelligence takes over a high tech russian boat and plots to TAKE OVER THE WORLD (hey, that NEVER happens, pesky alien scum!)...so stop thinking too hard and try to enjoy this adolescent thrill ride in the just-cause-i'm-a-bigtime-hotshot-actor-don't-mean-i-ain't-got-bills-to-pay spirit in which it was intended. who says fun has to be smart? Four Christmases - PG-13 i heard terrible things about this and only a respected friend dragged me into the thing...and i liked it anyhow. damned reviewers with their superiority complexes and all, they piss me the hell off! especially laughed when vaughn gets his ass handed to him when he visits his family. it's not "it's a wonderful life" but it's not total dreck either. Marley & Me - PG or how a pet becomes much more than simply an dumb animal in the eyes of the owner but a cherished part of the family. if you've got a pet now, or had one sometime in your life this film will coax you into fondly remembering that fact...and then blatantly pushes every emotional button you've got in that neighborhood! just like the pet that you remember, this one charms you almost against your will. Slumdog Millionaire - R told in a series of flashbacks this opulent and lush film is simply about loving your soulmate no matter what, be it time, distance or circumstance. altho not the zowie the hype promised, not a waste of time either. January 3, 2009

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - PG-13 told in a series of flashbacks this opulent and lush film is simply about loving your soulmate no matter what, be it time, distance or circumstance. altho not the zowie the hype promised, not a waste of time either. January 3, 2009

Frost/Nixon - R often slow and predictable, the action really gets going whenever the camera lingers on langella's multilayered (and to my mind, oscar worthy)portrayal of a soul who hates himself...the main reason to see this (that and it was the only thing in my local multiplex not infested with hormone overrun, sugar-frosted chocolate bomb overdosed teens...). Australia - PG-13 nicky kidman has fun in the babs stanwyck role, jackman gamely sneers, snarls and smiles in the bob mitchum part, and a cast of thousands stand cheering. who says they don't make 'em like they used to? part homage to old hollywood, part jingoistic salute to the land down under, maybe the first western i've seen yet that utilizes computer animation for the action scenes and a call for racial equality on top of all that, i wasn't bored despite it's being overlong. i expect this one to be a popular weeper for dvd owners everywhere. you'll go a'waltzin matilda wit me... Superman Returns - PG-13 rethinking this one, as any serious supes fan should, and i come to the conclusion that singer has crafted simply the best superman film ever made...in any medium. sorry it took me so long to get it, bryan, and thx for the hard work. cue the tina turner song now... The Day the Earth Stood Still - PG-13 there are some flaws...but this premise is my old friend and i will not abandon it for story glitches or vapid realisations. kathy bates: always good. jen connally almost steals the show with a competent turn as a hotsie-totsy science type. keanu...he has his detractors multipling like ebola virus, but i am not one. and speaking of viruses, and invasions, can anyone stop the reliance on computer tech that has hollywood on it's deathbed...or at least very sick? for the love of the art, give the writers some damn money or some schoolin' or whatever it takes before the patient expires! Cadillac Records - R read the reviews previous to watching this but, as i hale from chitown (my secret sordid big city past!), felt it a requirement to attend this...this waste of time. don't you make the same mistake, not for any reason. if one must endure this then i might say that, okay, there are indeed moments of redemption, but they only happen whenever you leave the room... Twilight - PG-13 hokey smokes, bullwinkle, a bigtime surprise outta nowhere, the first in the "my boyfriend is a vampire" genre (get 'em while they're hot...er...cold!), this little gem includes more than simply chills, as just about anything with the "vampire" designation should, but succeeds in being whodathunkit fun as well. there's some steamy dreamy romancin' the vampire scenes here too, making this one prime for the dvd set. now guess what your teen wants for christmas?
to be dead.

Rachel Getting Married - R jonathan demme is the surgeon here, working without aesthesia and a pneumatic drill. the patient is no less than the american family, guts and all, as demme demonstrates how much we hurt each other especially while trying to do the right thing. this is not gonna be neat and clean. see anne hathaway rise to the "A" class actress league. this is gonna hurt you a little bit. the best mainstream adult film out right now. tears w/o trying to get 'em. Changeling - R it takes one to know one and ol' squint proves it by riding herd (ha-ha! rawhide!) on a coupla hollywood primadonnas to interesting effect. jolie's face does the acting here and not her chest for a change of pace and malkovich is the most restrained i've ever seen him in this dense little film simply about a mother's search for her lost son. a nice character study all ways round and a well done period evocation as well. Transporter 3 - PG-13 part 3 in luc besson's yuppie sumarai deliveryman series embodied - with nods to clint eastwood's squinty spaghetti western days - squintily by jason statham. this time it's those mean old polluters whose euro-henchmen take one hell of a behind-whuppin' in the name of stopping the greedy ruination of our planetary entitlement. how about a series about a yuppie samurai waiter called:"the food bringer"? only if ol' luc writes it! lotsa impossible action here, but hey, that's no surprise, is it? Quantum of Solace - PG-13 never a dull moment with the late brit answer to lil steve mcqueen who pouts his way thru this tasty steppin stone on the march to rebuilding the bond legend from the ground up. and this is a bond film, i know, cause even his surrogate mom/boss, dame judi dench, is sexy in it...check her out in a bathrobe. okay, so there are some missing familiars but that's coming, that's coming... Soul Men - R bernie mac's swan song is capably assisted by colleague samuel l. jackson in what could be a grandchild of the hope and crosby road movies of yore and kissin' cousin to "the blues brothers". it's a road movie. character driven. and these guys have some fun on the way. you will too. bye senor mister bernie...and thank you. The Haunting of Molly Hartley - PG-13 a lonely house deep in the woods. a young maiden slowly approaches and enters: "hello?" there's a loud sound behind her...dammit, it's only the cat. she walks a bit further into the dim recesses. suddenly there's a loud noise...dammit, it's only the window blown by the breeze. there's a door ahead of her and she cautiously heads towards it when a hand jets from nowhere to tightly grab her arm...dammit, it's that hunky footballer who's been eyein' her at school goofing around. and so you have the gist of this one. ever seen it before? you betcha. it only can be redeemed from using such tired old cliches if they possibly utilise some fresh storyline...
forget it.
altho i wish jake weber would get more and better work.
