The Spiderwick Chronicles
by DeanExcitement and one of the best films based on children's fantasy book that combines the magic of the Harry Potter series, the adventure of the Indiana Jones series and the wonderment of the Narnia films, to tell a magical story the likes of which I have never experienced before! A hobgoblin is kindly hilarious, who has a liking for birds, and Freddie Highmore does a very powerful performance in this next based on the children's book movie since Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Arthur and the Invisibles.

Semi-Pro
by DanielleJackie Moon: "Everybody panic! Oh my God, there's a bear loose in the coliseum! There will be no refunds! Your refund will be escaping this deathtrap with your life! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love the tender meat! Cover your sodas! Dewie loves sugar!"
The movie finds Ferrell as Jackie Moon, a one-hit wonder from the disco era who used his pop music riches to buy the Flint Michigan Tropics, a bumbling ABA team nearing the end of that league's era. The announcement is made that the ABA is folding and only four teams will be absorbed into the NBA; it's determined that the league's four top-ranking teams will be ones to merge, a promise that may or may not be kept. Semi-Pro works best as an "underdogs make good" sort of film, where we watch the team bond and go through the usual training montages and emotional upsets. It's nothing new, but with actors like André Benjamin and Woody Harrelson on board, it stays remarkably fresh. Laughs come from the mouth of Ferrell, who, as his did in "Blades," takes off on his own spaceship of thought and tangents. Watching Jackie freak out over the continual failure of his team is entertaining footage. Semi-Pro is at its funniest when it's at its most surreal. The bickering between the team members is the source of some amusement, and the commentators played by Andrew Daly and Will Arnett are an absolute riot. Each character has a few scenes where they are allowed to shine too, and the eccentricity of some of them adds to the flavour. But for pure belly laughs, you cannot beat the moments where strangeness is an understatement. It's madcap and thoroughly nutty, but that's also what makes it work.Hey, you should really see this!

Funny Games (2008)
by DeanMichael Haneke remakes his own film from the original German to appeal to an American audience. Almost shot for shot this film is reproduced.
My question is...why?
The film depicts the sadistic torture of one family by two obviously affluent, well-schooled boys. They play "games" with the family and some very obvious mind games.
The acting is well-done. The sadistic youths are convincing in their roles. Tim Roth is always a joy to watch though his talents are wasted here as he was almost part of the scenery. Why he and Naomi Watts decided to take this project on is a mystery to me.
For those pseudo-bohemians that would say that this was an art house film making a commentary on sadism, morbid curiosity, and bad-breeding I say, "Wrong."
This was an almost interesting exercise in one Director's ego playing games with you the viewer.
The characters are thin, the plot is thin, the vehicle of talking to the camera is old, the notion of a blue-blood gone bad is old and it seems that Mr. Haneke is reaching for a concept that is simply beyond his own grasp.
The only thing that reaches out and really grabs the viewer is the level of sadism and the fact that this could possibly happen and happen in the home.
Want to watch a scary, true crime movie that takes place in the home? Watch "In Cold Blood." That was chilling.
Want to watch a film that starts nowhere and ends exactly where you know it will as well as being an exercise in "let's see how long we can draw this out before people start turning this 2-hour silliness off" then watch "Funny Games."
Mind you, this is coming from a psycho-thriller, horror fan.
This film is a bore and almost an insult. If you want to watch a silly movie that takes itself seriously then watch this.

Martian Child
by DeanI have always been a John Cusack fan and even happier when he teams up with his sister Joan (love her) so I am pretty much assuredly going to watch most movies he comes out with.
I saw some mixed reviews on this one and got burned by "Serendipity," but liked the premise of "Martian Child" so I forgave a little.
Eccentric writer ostracized in his early childhood for being "odd" loses his wife and finds his calling in being the father to an adopted son who is even odder than he was.
The movie is charming even though sometimes it pushes the message too far and occasionally relies on heavy cliche. This is a very moving tale made even more moving in light of the fact that it was based on a true story. There is a 13 minute extra where the writer and his "Martian child" do a bit of a retrospective on how the story was written based upon their relationship, trials and tribulations and that the child in the film is, in fact, a mirror to his own adopted son (who we do get to meet).
This tidbit makes the film that much more special.
A good movie about being true to oneself and not compromising your heart in the face of any external influences as well as accepting others for exactly who they are.
Check it out.Good family movie as well as a good watch.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2)
by DeanGuillermo Del Toro strikes again. The same beautiful artwork that made "Pan's Labyrinth" so gorgeous you will find herein striking the viewer with all kinds of visual candy. The humor keeps a nice balance between the gravity and the inane as our favorite characters from the first installment are back for another round.
The problem is that this round simply did not go the full length of the field.
The characters are not as well-developed as in the first (perhaps it was expected that all the viewers saw the first, but I found that this was not so). The story is interesting, but not well fleshed out. Where an incredible statement started to be made through the use of ancient races, elementals and nature spurned we fall back on the old vehicles of war, choreography and visuals (albeit stunning) rather than a storyline that reaches the depths it looked as though it was grasping for. Perhaps it could not be told in such a short amount of time.
Regardless, this film is a gem. For those of you looking for a straight "super hero" movie this is not it. If you are looking for something a bit more complex, a little more brooding, a little more cynical you might find it here.
Definitely a good film and a great summer blockbuster.Hey, you should really see this!
