Tropic Thunder
R
Tropic Thunder is, simply put, one of the best movies of the summer and easily it's best comedy.
Ben Stiller directs his finest feature and turns in his best performance since Meet the Parents. The film also serves as a a a funny examination of "behind the scenes" Hollywood.
The film is filled with great performances. Along with Stiller, Jack Black turns in his best work in years. But, it's Robert Downey Jr. who manages to steal the show with his sublime work here.
In my opinion, Downey Jr. has had such a good year that Oscar nominations should be flooding in. I'm supporting a Lead nod for his work in Iron Man, but his work here merits serious Best Supporting Actor consideration along with Mr. Ledger's searing performance earlier this summer. He had the best lines of movie, and he looses himself in this character, something that rarely the result of a comedy.
Another performance sure to raise eyebrows in Tom Cruise. Cruise jumpstarts his career once again with a great performance. The elements of satire that he provides through his character is pure genius.
The writing is great too...just beyond hilarious. Some great Hollywood jokes, but then there's also just great humor along the way.
In the end, what this film does best is that it makes fun of everything Hollywood. I commend all the actors, large and small, who took a part in this film knowing very well that what they were making fun of was largely their own lives and careers. It's simply brilliant.
The Dark Knight
PG-13
I went to the midnight showing of this film, and I must say that it was the best movie going experience of my life. Before this film I deemed midnight showings worthless, but never had I been so excited for a movie.
Simply put, this film is a masterpiece. A stunning achievement for everyone involved, and a film that stands as one of the best OF ALL TIME.
Everything about this film is just perfect. The cast, the script, the cinematography, eveything.
Christopher Nolan had already established his genius with previous films such as Memento, The Prestige, and Batman Begins, but it's with The Dark Knight that he shows us all that he really has. No only did he co-write the best comic book script ever, but he directed what is easily the best crime-epic of the past decade. Come Oscar time, directing and screenplay nods would be well deserved.
The cast of course is perfect. Come awards season, they are the only ensemble that deserves recognition. Each gets the chance to flesh out their character, to make us care for them. Each takes their performance to areas I never thought possible in a comic book movie. Christian Bale has been absent from some of the reviews, but the truth is that he is brilliant. Not not only the best Batman, but he brings things to the character that no other actor would be capable of. He's simply brilliant.
Still, this movie would not be quite what it is without the fearless performance of the late Heath Ledger. Leaving the theater, one can't help but think that Ledger would have become one of the greats had he continued on from here. He emerses himself completely in his role as the Joker, and in the process creates what I believe is the most memerable screen villian of all time. He has scenes which draw fear from the audience, and others that draw laughter. It's simply a brilliant performance. Come Oscar time, he'll be the only one worthy of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
The supporting cast is also great. Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine expand greatly on their characters. Throughout the movie we begin to know each of them better. Rarely do films allow the audience to feel an emotional connection with its characters, but through eveyone's performance it's possible here. Gary Oldman is also great, as is Maggie Gyllenhaal. Aaron Eckhart, as Harvey Dent/Two-Face, also deserves attention. His character makes much of this crime epic work, and many of the scenes hinge on his ability to flesh out his character. he does it though, and easily stands his groud in this talented group of individuals.
Another thing that should be pointed out is the lack of special effects used here. Nolan is a true storyteller, and therefore tends to cut back on these over the top, ridiclous CGI shots. Sure, there's some but only when nessicary.
The film also notably uses the fears of our country since 9/11. The videos made by the Joker are easily comparable to the films sent out every so often by Osama bin Laden. Truth is, the film prays on people's fears and in this day and age the film gets across this point more eerily then I ever thought possible.
In short, I could go on about this movie forever. There's so much to be said about the film, and subsequent viewings will only result in more praise.
So, in closing I encourage everyone to see this film. It's dark, haunting, and spectacular. A true testament to what movies should be, and how stories should be told.
It's nothing short of brilliance!
R.I.P. Heath Ledger

Wow...i don't know if I can even come up with a review after all the intelligence I lost from watching this film.
What a horrible film. I never really had a passion to see this film, but a couple of friends were going so I tagged along: BAD CHOICE.
The acting, plot, script...all just terrible. There's been movies done about pot and drugs that are all way better than this.
I do give this film high marks for being the first Apatow-produced film that really transcends it's comedic genre. There's a little bit of action, a little bit of a thriller. Still though, not enough to ever watch this film.
John Adams
Unrated
Along with Angels in America, this John Adams series is the best miniseries I've seen.
All the performances are great, with Paul and Laura delivering some of the best work of their career. The supporting cast is also great.
This miniseries provides one with more U.S. history than a whole year of school studies would. What a great achievement.
Be sure to run out and rent this one.

Tarnation
by BrianTarnation is the legacy of three generations of mental illness, partly heriditary, and partly "self-imposed". It's a shockingly honest (truly) portrayl of a family in turmoil.
Jonathan Caouette tells of and documents his life over at least a 17 year period, and does so in a way that somhow, in my view, veers away from anything that is self-indulgent and becomes something that is brutally honest, and without any shame.
The documentary is, at times, both beautiful and terrifying. However, upon reflection, I'm only left feeling admiration adn awe at Caouette's willingness to be so bare and raw.
Everyone should be able to get something out of this. I can;t believe I only first heard of it a few weeks ago.

Thirteen
by CraigDirected by: Catherine Hardwicke.
Starring: Evan Rachel Wood, Nikki Reed, Holly Hunter.
<< "I love you and your brother more than anything in the world. I would die for you, but I won't leave you alone right now." >>
The story follows an A-grade, 13 year old student who, after getting befriended by the newly popular girl in school, she changes herself physically to get noticed and soon spirals and changes into something else that ultimately affects her and those around her.
Catherine Hardwicke really hits you where it hurts here. Sure, the bleak-doco style is nothing original these days in such a film, but Thirteen is made all the more powerful and unexpectedly emotional thanks to Catherine's great skill to control the emotions and channel each of her characters so well and really stick them center stage...and the brilliant handheld work (surprising when I thought it was steadicam) and bleak, bleached-out cinematography which is amazingly shot, really works well alongside it all.
What really shocked me was the fact that star Nikki Reed, aged 15 at the time I might add, co-wrote the script for this film and loosely based it on a real-life experience. The script is grounded so far into realism that some might find it too much to take. The characters are brilliantly defined and given enough heart to make us care for them every step of the way, which only adds more to the raw emotion the script throws at us...and thank god it never sinks into soapy-pop culture trends and views.
The performances are truly outstanding. Holly Hunter is mind-blowing as the single mother trying to support her family. Her impressive balance between the characters caring notions for her children and her blinded ways of the things around her is simply amazing to watch and when things kick into an emotional gear, her performance gets even more powerful. Everyone seems to automatically point to Holly Hunter as the great performance of the film, but really it belongs to Evan Rachel Wood. For someone with such mediocrity in acting at the time, she takes big steps up and rips through her troubled character with such raw power and understanding and its easy to say that if she keeps this up, she will go far, a truly powerful performance.
Thirteen is simply a shockingly and unexpectedly powerful film. A brutally realistic, if slightly exaggerated portrayal of a torn family and the unfortunate reality of teenage life. Brilliantly directed with a familiar style handled so well, powerfully acted and astonishingly written...and with help from the 15 year old co-star Nikki Reed (co-writer), it makes it all the more realistic. It may be a great thing at first to know your kids 'grow up so fast', but think twice. Highly recommended.posted 5 hours ago -

Lonesome Jim
by scottsteve bushimi a great actor, but also turns out a great indie as director every so often, the debut trees lounge was a classic, animal factory and interview followed, all acomplished pieces of work, very low key pieces of work, and now with lonesome jim, a interesting look at a troubled young man played nicely by casey afleck, afleck him self is certainly making a name for him self, and this coming before his breakout year a year later, with gone baby gone and assanination of jesse james, here playing afailed writer going back home to his parents, not really wanting to, and seing him self getting stuck there, things dont help, that, although loving his family, he cant really be around them, meeting local girl played by liv tyler helps a little, and hopes there could be something in it, but also with family business, coming up and a uncle whos not so inocent, and a brother who hes not best at communicating with, things could be tough, a great indie feel to this, this is what indies do best, showing small town life and its surroundings as it is, in afleck,a miserable characor full of self dought but you care, and all round, some nice performances, and a simple story,

Girl, Interrupted
by MeshStory about mental hospital?
Is it interesting?
If you like all kind of psychological theme, you will like this.
For me this movie is one of the best movie i ever watch, of course there is no depth, twist or hidden message in it. what makes it interesting is the contrary of it. the story gives you chill, thinking about that not all crazy people are crazy, or are all people crazy?
Mentally dysfunctional doesn't mean that they are born with it, sometimes they 'choose' to be it. Afraid to face life and truth.
Winona Ryder, wow just mind blowing performance.
What ever happen to this talented actress now, only she knows. Make a comeback! :)
Angelina Jolie, prove her acting capability, and she deserve that freakin Oscar by any means. her first scene captures all, for all haters watch this movie and slap me if she isn't good!
Direction is flawless, i liked it.
i enjoy every minute in it, and it gives you a honest portray of a character. there are gray shades in everyone, and it's unfold here.
All supporting cast are wonderful, starting from Goldberg, Leto or Murphy.
Over all, a movie that not many people can enjoy, but if you like dark theme this one is for you!

Vampire Hunter D
by DuncanInteresting from a historical standpoint, as far as animation in general is concerned. But that's about the only praise I have for it. The story is shallow, even when compared to the novel it's based on (a fun read, but 'tweren't what I'd call great literature). The design is ugly, the animation is crude, and the voice acting on both coasts is abysmal. Fans of '08s anime TV might get a kick out of it, but for people who want the polish of films like Akira or Ghost in the Shell, this is one to avoid. It's sequel of the same name*, on the other hand, is worth checking out.
*Note: In the United States, the second film is referred to as Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. There are better vampire movies out there.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
by BrianAt first glance, the title of this film seems ridiculous. It's too long and seems goofy, and all that usually = a crappy movie. But, in this case, the title is totally appropriate. Robert Ford was, quite literally and definitively, a coward.
Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck give admirable performances, the latter, in my opinion building on the success of Gone, Baby, Gone.
It's the nuances -- inflection, facial tics, etc -- that bring the characters to life and make the story interesting, and both men's performances make make the real men, James AND Ford both seem worthy of sympathy.
The one big flaw with the film comes in its legnth. Not the fact that it's 2 and half hours long, but the fact that it lingers too long. It should have ended with the first assertion that Robert Ford was a coward, during the play.
Still, a pretty great film, that did what great biopics should -- made me more curious about the real men, particularly Jesse James.Hey, you should really see this!

Frozen River
by RichardA strong effort by first time director Courtney Hunt and an award-worthy performance by Melissa Leo. I did have a hard time connecting with one of the main characters, but not so much that it undermined the plethora of positives this movie has going for it. There are some strong themes of premature judgement and sacrifice, and they are packaged in an interesting, original plot. As far as "river" movies go, this one ranks above "Mystic River".

Fracture
by Alexander''Knowledge is pain.''
An attorney intent on climbing the career ladder toward success, finds an unlikely opponent in a manipulative criminal he's trying to prosecute.
Anthony Hopkins: Ted Crawford
Ryan Gosling: Willy Beachum
Given the talented cast, Fracture should have been more than a paint-by-numbers thriller but that's exactly what it results in. It features a few solid performances although they are working with some unremarkable material and can't quite lift the film above mediocrity. The uninspired direction was a bit surprising given the track record of director Gregory Hoblit. He managed to keep things safe and predictable without really adding anything special to the film. I guess he was relying on the strength of his cast which only worked to an extent. The scenes with Gosling and Hopkins were interesting to watch but whenever Hopkins was absent, the film seriously dragged and sleepy eyed Gosling, whos character was really unlikable or relatively weak in some scenes, which made it hard to cheer for him at points.
The screenplay was only average with some decent dialogue being the highlight. The way the screenwriter played out the crime was very formulaic and pretty damn predictable. The ending was fairly obvious from the beginning and it wasn't a big twist ending that makes the viewer feel smart for figuring it out but rather it was an ending that makes the viewer wonder how these supposedly smart characters weren't able to figure it out. So save for some scenes with Gosling and Hopkins, the audience gets to watch a bland story unfold without any real sense of interest.
The film's colours and cinematography is to a degree quite good, and includes some unusual angles. Also was impressed by the use of a wide-angle lens use in the courtroom parts. Sound effects, so often ignored, further add to the realism of the proceedings.
Dialogue is generally effective, and includes some witty lines. When Willy's boss talks with him about being taken off the case, Willy responds: "Even if I find new evidence?" To which his boss retorts: "From where, the evidence store?". So yes Fracture has humour as well as tension here and there.
Despite a seriously flawed script, Fracture is highly absorbing in places, thanks largely to a strong cast and sense of professionalism in the way it's styled. Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling obviously are the bait for any fans of either.
Gosling has gotten to do something a bit different (for his usual weird roles) and Hopkins has managed to do something similar (he does anything and everything nowadays) without ever boring us, one negative was his accent which sounded Irish or something, felt abit odd.
Final word is that Fracture is exciting enough while it's speeding along, though as soon as it slows down it loses it's power. Fracture achieves some positives by giving us a few surprises and making it a game of cat and mouse that ultimately becomes twisted round.
The bravura performances are fun as is the chemistry overall. But Fracture feels like its been done before and more importantly it's been achieved and executed alot better in previous films of the same nature. Not bad, not good. Veteran Anthony Hopkins & Sleepy eyed Ryan Gosling do a film so it's not going to be a complete disaster.
Or is it?.... :P
More or less average.

RoboCop
by Alexander''Nice shooting, son. What's your name?''
''Murphy.''
In a dystopic & crime ridden Detroit, a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg with submerged memories haunting him.
Peter Weller: Officer Alex J. Murphy / RoboCop
''Come quietly or there will be... trouble.''
Director Paul Verhoven, the director of Total Recall and Black Book unleashes a truly original concept in the form of a normal Policeman cruelly butchered by criminals only to be revived as a super-cop cyborg. Initially his memory is lost but as the film goes on he gradually gets it back, and begins to remember the people who hurt him and memories of his lost family resurface.
Next time when you watch Robocop, try to shift your focus from the cyborg, loud explosions and over the top gore towards the actual writing. From the main theme of criticizing the modern money driven societies of Western Cultures, (a topic still relevant, and will be in the future as well) all the way to the smallest segments of dialogue, the writing is nothing short of perfection. RoboCop is simply the most intelligent "action" film to come out of Hollywood in the 80s. Unfortunately, the cleverness is hidden between the lines of comic book action. No wonder so many people fail to see this film for what it really is.
Amazing cinematography, solid performances (especially from Kurtwood Smith and Miguel Ferrer), memorable musical score, etc...
The list is limitless. Granted, the stop motion effects of ED-209 look quite old today but the concept and visuals of this metallic beast is astounding for the late 80s. RoboCop has its faults, like the rather extreme toxic waste drenching scene or unrealistic nature cue OTT violence there, but who cares when it's so much fun in a gory graphic way. All I know is I never tire of watching Robocop.
For me, one of the best scenes of RoboCop comes at the very end. An old man asks the robot, "What's your name, son?" The robot cop turns his head, sports a wan smile, and says, ''Murphy." Then as he turns to start to walk away the camera cuts to black and the theme song roars in as we read the bold print on-screen that says, ROBOCOP.
The final word being RoboCop is the ultimate in cyborg films.
It's an extraordinary journey of a man trying to find himself when all is taken from him unfairly, also an action film that starts and never loses momentum.
In a time when every single action film out there presents us with overblown budgets, mediocre acting, sloppy writing, amateurish directing, horrible sub characters, and nothing but special effects. RoboCop is a solid undying reminder that at one time, big comic book flicks were not always just of the Action genre but also ones of depth and hidden meanings rolled into the mix, Robocop is one of the finest examples out there.Classic from Paul. Its addictive, used to watch this loads when I was a kid and it's still amazing despite a few faults, but I don't care, it's so much fun you don't notice.

American Psycho
by Ginn"In 1987 Huey released this, Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think I their undisputed masterpiece is "HiP To Be Square," a song so catchy that most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself."~Patrick Bateman

I havent read the book, but for once I think Im contented with not hunting down the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis.
One thing about the story is that people easily confuse it with PSYCHO (Hitchcock/Bloch). Its not a remake or a modernized version of the 1960s film, and sad to say only a handful of people get the twisted humor in it, and what the film is really about..
Its a very poweful and demented story as it shows the american social psychology (and perhaps the definition? *no pun intended) of success. It mirrors the pressure of being in an ivy league environment, to be the best in everything, to be ontop of things, to be better than all the rest, how all of this can develop into to having a megalomanic kind of character. Seriously, how many of you get angry when youre not the best in something? How many of you feel close to breaking point when someone else tops you or whatever you have? Be careful, your sanity might be slipping.

by RichardThere's more than meets the eye in this gem from Iran. A fascinating story that is executed both beautifully and brilliantly. Parviz Parastui gives an emotionally charged, yet subtle and masterful performance, which polishes this film. Troy
by GinnI like few of the actors in this film, although having them on this does not make it an excelent movie.
Petersen merged a bunch of stories from Greek Mythology and came up with TROY. Most people confuse this film as being JUST the the story of Helen, but it isnt.
I think thats the trouble with films like these, some people dont really like to read and concatinating such wonderful classic stories and merging them to make a movie... well.. it kinda ruins peoples minds about the original stories. The effect of films like these to todays society isnt that wonderful, mainly cuz it just breeds more dumbasses.
Anyway, the cast was ok-ish, except for Rose Byrne which I found myself loathing, I just felt like she didnt exactly fit the role of Helen.. But then again they did alter the story.. Am I the only one who thought that she looked more like a whore more than a daughter of Zeus? And am I the only one who thought the indian-like mourning sound found throughout the film didnt fit the story at all?
Good points:
Awesome fight scenes!
Wicked battle armor costumes!
Great performance from Pitt, Bana and Sean Bean!
Peter O'Toole, even if old age has taken hold of him, hes still got a very good grip on every role he plays.
