The rarefied five-star realm.

  mrbot's Rating My Rating
1
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968,  G)
2001: A Space Odyssey
I've seen this film four times, starting at around age eight. Each time it's been a different experience, and each time I take something new away from it.
2
Tokyo Godfathers (2003,  PG-13)
Tokyo Godfathers
Another outstanding Satoshi Kon film. I hesitated giving this one five stars, but I really can't think of one thing I don't like about the film. Beautiful and touching, without excess sentimentality.
3
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005,  G)
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
I've been a huge W&G fan since first seeing 'A Grand Day Out' many years ago. This film was a joy from start to finish. I rarely give perfect ratings after one viewing, but this deserves it.
4
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975,  PG)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Timeless comedic brilliance. After 25 years and 10 viewings, still my favorite comedy.
5
The Silence of the Lambs (1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
Brilliant script, brilliant performances by everyone, superb adaptation of the novel. Hopkins *is* Lecter. 'Nuff said.
6
Yojimbo (1961,  Unrated)
Yojimbo
It's tough to pick a favorite Kurosawa film, but this one's well up there. Mifune's in top form throughout, as a samurai who turns two rival factions against each other while in the employ of both. The fight scene at the end is awesome. What's the moral of the story? I'm still not sure.
7
Alien (1979,  R)
Alien
The suspense, panic, and horror in 'Alien' has never been successfully duplicated.
8
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark) (1981,  PG)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark)
The absolute standard for action/adventure movies. Doesn't seem the least bit dated 25 years later.
9
Millennium Actress (Sennen joyû) (2001,  PG)
Millennium Actress (Sennen joyû)
Satoshi Kon is coming into his own as one of the premiere writer/directors in the anime genre. This is a brilliant film.
