Encounters at the End of the World

Intermittently interesting is how I'd describe this Werner Herzog documentary. Every time he begins to lapse into a comical jaded view of the "civilization" he breaks out with some cool facts and nice cinematography. I'd also propose he cut back on the sweepingly epic musical score in favor of some quite moments. I got the impression he wanted to make sure the watchers knew what was supposed to be breathtaking and serenely beautiful. My main requirement for a documentary is that it teach something, then entertain. This one teetered on the edge for me but it's still worth a watch.

A horror movie in August, what a scary distribution date! You now there's something wrong already. I'll give the pluses first... some real good scares, great gore, and an interestingly different story with a nice twist ending. So what went horribly wrong besides the typical Hollywood horror movie failings(flaws aplenty, ham-fisted dialog, unbelievable character actions)? For the amount of story and time it would take to figure out the mystery of "what's going on" this movie would have needed to be about 20 minutes longer (and it was already almost 2 hrs, unheard of for this genre). Pieces fall too easily into place and near the midpoint the film becomes frantic in its pace. Having spent time at the beginning to set up the characters, we're left with an unbelievable easy "fix"... which turns into an over-the-top battle, that frankly goes on too long. Much like this review. Save this for a weekend rental.
The X-Files: I Want to Believe (The X Files 2)
PG-13
Enjoyable acting that showcases Gillian Anderson's abilities and David Duchovny's growth as an actor. This isn't going to sway anyone to the X-Files if they don't already like the X-Files and it did seem more suited as a winter flick. SPOILER: the film left me with too many unanswered questions, like why were they trying to switch heads even if the guy was sick? and I'd have liked a yes or no about the priest... among other things.
Pineapple Express

Hilarious and over the top. Great straight... and probably just as much fun while stoned. James Franco is so dim-witted and fried, he is an instantly classic character. This will also go on my top 10 of 2008 although it's a film that could get bumped during the big push for Oscar in the winter months.
The Wackness
R
Funny, fascinating, and real. A great ratio of laughs per minute make this one of my top 10 movies of 2008. Super realistic performances and witty dialog bring it all home. Myself and two of my friends "highly" recommend this film. Probably not for the "average schmo" as it isn't an over the top comedy. It's quick witted smart humor... for stoners and those of us who've been stoners. Here's hoping Pineapple Express is half as fun.

Come see this movie with me...
The Dark Knight
by TimSince my early childhood I have loved Batman. Loved the tv series in the 70's. liked the Tim Burton films but always felt the movies highlighted the villians and not Batman. I always like Batman because he was not a super hero he was a man with a dark side. At first looking for revenge then striving for Justice which alot of times is out of his reach.
The Christopher Nolan directed "Batman Begins" and that film has been my favorite Batman film. It was about the Batman. The acting was great and story was smart and gritty. Not campy like other films.
Now Christopher Nolan brought as The Dark Knight which is brilliant and a couple of notchs above the previous film.
I like to look at Batman Begins and The Dark Knight as one film. A great film starts off with a great story and made great steeping stones then the story builds and takes of in The Dark Knight.
The Dark Knight is the Godfather of comic book films. It sits alone in a level of its own The story is so well written and the acting is unbelievable. Heath Ledger will be remembered for this great performance as The Joker. He understands the Joker and goes for it. He deserves the Oscar hands down.
Then there is Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent the Batman without the cape. He is admired by Batman. There is a hope Harvey can let Batman hang up his cape and cowl. Then fate shows it's ugly face and Two Face emerges. This is another great performance that is overlooked because of Heath's daredevil performance.
Christian Bale is great also, he brings the torment and indecision that a caped crusader goes through. This film can be watched over and over for many years to come. A classic. Thank you Christopher Nolan for giving us the real Batman.Hey, you should really see this!
