movie buff and bookworm all at the same time. add the fact I'm a music lover too... So a great movie to me is, an excellent movie adaptation of a book and a rockin' soundtrack! (but then again, that hardly ever happens... bummer.)
I'm not picky, I'll watch anything. and even if I rate something as "not interested" doesn't mean I'll never want to watch it, it just means, It won't be something I'll look for in a video store. (like say, I'm not the biggest fan of action movies. but if I caught it on TV and I had nothing better to do, I'll definitely give it a shot. If I like it, then great! rave reviews of movies will help spark my interest too.) ** When I get the time, I'll be re-reviewing my movies here. (ie, standardize the 5-star ratings, and write decent reviews for earlier films I rated, at least something longer than "I love it." or "I hate it." and maybe update my profile as well. So watch this space. ;) NO WIDGETS PLEASE! |

Cheung Gong 7 hou (CJ7) (Long River 7)
PG
It's a good thing I didn't know anything about this movie, other than he fact that it's a Stephen Chow film.
I was actually expecting a laughfest like Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. But I was pleasantly surprised with this one. Nothing from what I expected, but I loved what I saw anyway!
I an extremely cute family movie, the storyline actually pretty simple. But didn't have a lot of cliches that I thought would have. which makes it really good.
It's kinda sad to think that others rate this movie low because it's just not as funny as Stephen Chow's other films. But I actually commend him for being able to write and direct something different, but always with the Chow humor. ^_^
Speed Racer (2008)
PG
Had a great time watching this in the theatres.
My first impression when I first knew of the production of this movie was, "Speed Racer? How the hell are they gonna pull that off?" Apparently, a futuristic/CGI world is how. and boy did this movie scream bright colors. So I can understand why some people can get a headache watching this.
It's a shame this movie is having a hard with critics, getting so much negative reviews yet most of the people I know loved it! Obviously, these critics are no fans of the original anime, or they didn't have a childhood. This is so not the type of movie that you nitpick.
You get over the over-the-top animation, and you'll see that this movie had heart. Not just some testosterone-driven animated version of the fast and furious.
If you're convinced that you''ll hate this film, then DON'T watch it, because you wiil. But if yu;re not, I truly recommend this to both fans and non-fans of Speed Racer. Don't take anyone's word for it. Certainly not the critics! Go see it yourself and decide whether you like it or not.
Byôsoku 5 senchimętoru (5 Centimeters per Second) (A Chain of Short Stories about Their Distance)
Unrated
Not that I've seen a lot, but this has got to be one of the "prettiest" animes ever made. It's like, you know it's anime, but it looks so darn real.
I'm not the biggest fan of chapter by chapter movies, but this one worked well with that format, making the pacing better than what I would imagine if they made it into a seamless piece.
I don't know if it's just me, but I found the first chapter incredibly slow. I've had similar pacing experience with other japanese movies, and I understand why they like doing it, but sometimes I really have to speed it up or I can't bear it. But by the time he actually reached the station, I loved it. :)
I liked the fact that they opted to take a different view/narration in the second chapter. That was actually my favorite one.
The third chapter was a short one, both of them grown up, and sadly awakened from dreams. It was a sad yet realistic ending that you actually wanted to lengthen the movie expecting it to have a happy ending.
House of Flying Daggers
PG-13
Though for some reason, I predicted some of the twists in the movie, I still think the movie had a great plot. (I was just thinking too much at the time.) The conflict was incredibly simple, yet the circumstances surrounding them made it incredibly intense.
However, I didn't like the ending. I was hoping it had to do more with the "House" itself, I but guess it wasn't the story's focus. I didn't particularly like how the daggers easily became the Deux-exmachina, but I guess I a lot of the fight scenes were highly unlikely in the first place, that you let it pass.
as everyone else has commented, House of Flying Daggers is visually stunning. The landscapes of China are beautiful. There were a lot of CG involved in this movie, and even the blood looked fake, but like the daggers, you just allow it.
Despite my many qualms, this gets a four star rating all because the stars of the film. Zhang ZiYi, pretty porcelain doll as always. Takeshi Kaneshiro! gaah, having seen him first as a shy guy in TLTR, you just drool all over him in this one. Then there's Andy Lau, I actually smirked a bit watching him in this role, knowing him first in Infernal Affairs. (for those who've seen that, ya'll know what I'm talking about right? hahahahahaha.)
Cry Baby
PG-13
"Now I know why he (Johnny Depp) agreed to do Pirates 3... They (the producers) threatened to show this to the world!"
That was what my cousin said while we were watching this movie. Honestly, it's been a while since we laughed and screamed this much.
I was supposed to take a bath, but then as I passed my the TV where my cousin was watching, I noticed "JOHNNY DEPP" in the opening credits, and dude, of course I stopped and sat down to watch.
Right from the start, you know that this will be a not-so-serious movie, but I never thought it'll get dumber and dumber by the minute. Then you start asking yourself, "What the hell was Johnny Depp thinking when he did this?" But then you realize, this is the kind of role he'll get a kick out off.
For those who want to watch it, prepare to lose a few brain cells, and I recommend watching it with a bunch of people (all the johnny fans you know) because it'll be a fun time going locca over Johnny Depp.
If I didn't make myself clear the first time, you watch this movie for Johnny Depp, and nothing else. I hope Hatchett-face won't scare you off.
Lemora - A Child's Tale of the Supernatural
PG
I say while I was randomly looking thru dvds at the bookshop on campus, and I was really drawn towards the cover, and was immediately curious as to what the movie had to offer.
It wasn't quite what I expected, actually very far from it. Compared to a lot of other Vampire movies out there, this movie had little to offer in terms of story and visuals. But it's a B-movie after all, not much budget to go around with.
Good thing, it wasn't actually about vampires. Writers actually pretty much followed the vampire steorotype, and as my cousin kept saying, there was a lot of clever subtext within the dialogues. What the movie dealt was innocence and even sexual repression.
Having read up about Cheryl Smith (as the Lila Lee) before watching the movie, I really appreciated her despite the bland acting. In some scenes, I imagine in some other horror B-movie, the lead might have screamed her head off. She opted not to. Which is great for my ears, definitely.
Leslie Gilb as Lemora was effectively creepy. Even during the commentary, I thought her voice was still creepy.
I understand how this became a cult classic, and I also understand how this is not everyone's cup of tea.

Such a simple story of a girl finding love. Audrey Tautou is absolutely charming as Amelie. I just love this French film, I'm sure anyone else will! But you need patience in redaing thru the subs, not unless you speak french.

Braveheart

I'm no Mel Gibson fan, but i sure LOVED this movie... hehe, i like the whole accent.. one of the very few war movies i ever liked..

Oldboy

I lost all feeling in my arms when I watched this. Funny enough, I watched this with a friend on Valentines Day, it is about love of family after all. haha. Superb direction. It was absolutely sick and twisted, which makes it so damn good.

Dick Tracy
by HugoDICK TRACY (1990)
directed by Warren Beatty
starring Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, MadonnaDick Tracy: «Is the enemy of my enemy my friend, or is the enemy of my friend my enemy?»
Pat Patton: «Tracy, what'd you say?»
Dick Tracy: «Or enemy of my enemy my enemy?»
Pat Patton: «What'd he say?»
Dick Tracy: «The enemy of my enemy is my enemy.»
Sam Catchem: «He said the enemy of his enemy is his enemy.»
Pat Patton: «Oh.»
Created back in 1931 by Chester Gould, Dick Tracy is one of the earlier comic book «superhero» to appear into the American culture. No special powers and no special costumes, except maybe his hat and suit, but his attitude was what made him special. He was smart, incoruptible and committed to his job.In 1990, Warren Beatty decided to adapted the comic strip into a feature film. The final result is a mix betwee Tim Burton's Batman and Brian DePalma's The Untouchables.Visually speaking the film is absolutely stunning, using edgy visual effects looking half realistic and half cartoonish. Vittorio Storaro's cinematography is amazing as usual and will all those colors, he and Beatty managed to capture that comic book essence that almost no one else has, not even in the recent trend of superhero movies.
Beatty is alright as Tracy, the detective who doesnt have time for his girlfriend cause he absolutely want to catch Big Boy Caprice, the new mobster leader. He also has to look after a homeless kid he saved from an abusive man and his attraction from a beutiful lady that could help him catch the gangster.
The cast of the film is impressive, even big names play samller role. Al Pacino is amazing as the big boss, Dustin Hoffman is hilarious as Mumble, hs name says it all. Charlie Kosmo is in the right tone of annoyance as the kid and Madonna is a bit annoying but she looks good.
That film is all style over substance, but even in the comic strips Dick Tracy was never anything too complicated in terms of character study, and for that reason Beatty's film is quite faithful to the source material. Especially when comes the bad guys with those grotesque faces reminescent of the drawings in the strips.
Dick Tracy is a film that capture the comic book style perfectly, wether in its tone or in its visual qualities. I think its not for everyone's appreciation but I do dig those colors, cool settings and weird visual effects. Plus Danny Elfman's music can never hurt a film. I believe its one of the finest comic book adaptations that wasnt made in the 2000's.
One of my personal favorite comic book based films. Wont please everyone, but it sure pleases me.

Blow
by AprilWhat an amazing, moving true story!
I absolutely loved it and thoroughly reccomend it to anyone considering watching this film.
Johnny Depp is exceptional within his role and because this film focuses so closely upon his role the character building does this film wonders which also plays on the audience's empathy. the plot and script is just outstanding & the entire length of the film will keep you intruiged waiting for what happens next, an excellently constructed and shot film.I suppose this is a film you either will love or hate. For me this film was very engaging for the viewer and overall just a fabulous watch. The bonus of this film is that it is actually a true story. I don't reccomend movies often, only when i see a worthwhile one.. hopefully you get as much out of this as i did.
