Donnie Darko 1. Donnie Darko R 5.0 Stars
Brilliant soundtrack serves as a vivid vessel of time travel in this intellectual, God questioning, time traveling flick led by the breakout performance of Jake Gyllenhaal.
Fight Club 2. Fight Club R 5.0 Stars
Aside from being a kick-ass movie, its an excellent compliment to the book.
Predator 3. Predator R 4.0 Stars
One of the great action movies what will ever be made. Each character is delightfully unbelieveable and the predator aliens is one of the most imaginative and terrifying movie monsters ever made. A perfect example of what really crazy action is all about.
12 Monkeys 4. 12 Monkeys R 4.5 Stars
Maybe Bruce Willis' best acting performance. This movie definitely challenged the viewers to use their imagination, in a good way.
Sin City 5. Sin City R 5.0 Stars
Visually flawless. Each story in this film was smart and funny and packed with action and intrigue. As important, were the brilliant acting performances that carried each story.
V for Vendetta 6. V for Vendetta R 4.5 Stars
Really smart movie with good action and a really great message.

Diary of the Dead Diary of the Dead
    3.0 Stars by Tania
    Pretty watchable movie.
And quite easy to review also.

    Wanna bet?

    - Sudden zombie boom;
    - film students catching zombies on camera;
    - zombies roaming around all over the place;
    - film students running away from zombies while catching them on camera;
    - normal people turning into zombies;
    - film students witnessing normal people turn into zombies while catching them on camera;
    - ...

... And so on and so forth.

It's not a great film, as you may suspect already, but it isn't all that bad either.
The amateur camera work adds a nice touch to it. Makes it feel a little different from other zombie movies and a bit more realistic.
As far as realism can go in this genre, that is.
But, yeah, the directing style helped the rating a great deal. And considering that I only gave it 3 stars... You can imagine how it isn't such a must-see movie.
Watch it only if you have a tendency for enjoying movies with an amateur filming style.

If you don't, then there's a pretty good chance you'll hate it.

And if, on top of that, you don't usually tend to care for regular zombie movies all that much either... Then there's a pretty good chance you'll end up slitting your wrists halfway through it.

Guillermo Del Toro strikes again. The same beautiful artwork that made "Pan's Labyrinth" so gorgeous you will find herein striking the viewer with all kinds of visual candy. The humor keeps a nice balance between the gravity and the inane as our favorite characters from the first installment are back for another round.
The problem is that this round simply did not go the full length of the field.
The characters are not as well-developed as in the first (perhaps it was expected that all the viewers saw the first, but I found that this was not so). The story is interesting, but not well fleshed out. Where an incredible statement started to be made through the use of ancient races, elementals and nature spurned we fall back on the old vehicles of war, choreography and visuals (albeit stunning) rather than a storyline that reaches the depths it looked as though it was grasping for. Perhaps it could not be told in such a short amount of time.
Regardless, this film is a gem. For those of you looking for a straight "super hero" movie this is not it. If you are looking for something a bit more complex, a little more brooding, a little more cynical you might find it here.
Definitely a good film and a great summer blockbuster.

Creeping carnivorous cruddy kudzu climbing casually calling cliche catatonic clumsy characters craving carnal catastrophes...keep calling and calling and calling? This movie was less fun than the alliteration I just put together.
I don't really feel like spending all too much time on this.
    You have barely built characters.
You have one ancient Mayan temple.
You have a Mayan people for which there is no explanation and you have man-eating foliage.
This movie had a few tense moments, a few laughs and a whole lot of predictable tripe.
Color me silly for seeing it through.
It gets one extra star for a couple of decent gore shots and some pretty faces, but that is really it.
    Avoid this and be proud.

    Wanted Wanted
    3.5 Stars by Tania
    Crazy, crazy action flick!
Quite different from all the rest, I can tell you.
First of all, and unlike most action movies out there, it's not supposed to portray reality while at the same time using some ridiculous, annoying far-fetched scenes as a way of dealing with the infamous plot holes. This happens all the time in this genre. You know like, for instance, when a plot is flowing in a somewhat tidy fashion and then out of the blue comes a car flying over a burning bridge, only to fall on the road later again and keep on moving as if it never happened.
No, Wanted's not like that at all. It was never meant to portray reality as we know it. It's way too insane for that.
Let's just say they put the far in the far-fetched and manage to go beyond it. And what usually looks ridiculous in other movies becomes acceptable and even enjoyable in this one. Because they're not breaking any reality-bound rules. And how could they? The whole movie makes us feel that there are absolutely no rules to be broken. It's like they've created a whole new reality where anything goes. A quite clever move in my opinion, as it completely obliterates the far-fetchedness problem. Truth is, you can't have a far-fetched scene in a movie where all the scenes are meant to look unreal.
And that's really the beauty of Wanted.
That and also the dark humour in it. Sharp and unconventional, just the way I like it.
Also, the directing is just amazing. Definitely not ordinary in any sense of the word. Sometimes it's sheer madness, with very specific scenes rushing after each other to provide you with a sense of being in the characters' shoes and seeing things from their perpective, not only in terms of what they're capturing with their eyes, but also in terms of how those images and situations affect their state of mind.
Yeah, some shots are really that good.
But I guess I won't be mentioning any more about the directing. Better watch for yourself. As it turns out, reviews are no match for the real deal. Which in this case is well worthy of your time and attention.

    Although...
And you know what they say...
All good comes to an end, right?...
    Right.

(Except for Fight Club, that is. And very few other movies... But that's really not the point here.)

Well, despite all the good things I've been mentioning until now... I gotta be honest. The movie theme is not all that exciting or even original. And it's my belief they didn't make all that much effort while working on the plot either. Which means the storyline could have been a lot more breathtaking and also a whole lot more awe-inducing.
Very entertaining, but by no means brain candy.
Still, it beats the crap out of most movies lacking a top-noch plot. And considering the amount of films which fit in that category, I'd say Wanted is a pretty goddamn good movie in the overall.
    And that's that.
It's a bit hard to explain the way this movie works.
Better watch the thing and find out for yourself.

The Tracey Fragments The Tracey Fragments
    4.5 Stars by Dean
This is a very daring film.
It is edited and shot in a way that may leave the viewer quite disoriented. That though is part of its magic.
Short bursts of emotion and pathos bombard the senses in a manner completely deliberate so as to take you where our 'protagonist' is.
    She is lost.
Meet Tracey who is trying to make sense of life when all life seems to give to her is pain.
She doesn't perceive it that way though.
Defense mechanisms are a wonderful thing. We have them for a reason. To keep us from ourselves when we need to feel less.
Tracey finds solace in her delusions as she hunts for her brother who has been hypnotized to think he is a dog.
It sounds ridiculous, but it isn't.
This movie is full of angst and steps so far out on a limb that it threatens to drop off at every turn, but holds on so that if you make it past the first excruciatingly difficult minutes it takes to break through the unique manner by which the story is being told you will be bound to see it through to the end (try dramamine if need be).
Do I even have to say how brilliant Ellen Page was in this?
Watch this when you feel up to being hypnotized yourself, but don't even look for the conventional and don't look for the editing technique to end...it doesn't and if it did the story just would not come across the same.
It is as it is for a reason and not a gimmick.
In a very short period of time (77 minutes) this movie captures something amazing and brings it to you dissected for you to put it back together again.
    In 'fragments' as it were.
Watch it when you can...and only if you don't get motion sickness!

Sweet Smell of Success Sweet Smell of Success

This pitch black hearted noir was something of a flop on its release, and it's not difficult to see why. Not through lack of quality, but rather the fact that its unrelenting cynicism and bleak outlook is certainly not for the faint hearted. Tony Curtis turns in easily his best performance as Sidney Falco, an obsequious press agent who is perfectly willing to sell his soul to get on top, and Burt Lancaster is similarly superb, brilliantly cast against type as a cold-hearted tyrant (even describing an attack on his character as an attack on his country, the cry of despots throughout the ages) who controls all around him through contemptible manipulation. The core of the film is the creepily ambiguous relationship between he and his sister; at one point he refers to her "apron strings", an allusion to motherhood, but he also keeps a portrait on his desk as one would a spouse or lover... It is unusual in that instead of fists and bullets, all the damage is done through words and insinuations; the razor sharp dialogue is amongst the best ever written for the screen, and the magnificent photography represents the city streets as blackly as the protagonists' hearts. The package is completed by a soundtrack of fantastic contemporary jazz and the overall result is one of the pinnacles of film noir.

    Hum...
I don't quite know what to think of this movie. And I still don't know whether it was supposed to be a comedy or a serious film. I mean, the first half is full of humorous scenes and funny lines, but then they somehow turn the story around and start to get a bit on the weird romantic side (and I don't mean weird in a good way). And the explanation for the main character's condition would be fine by me if only they hadn't embellished it so much.
As the movie was developing I was going like: 'HA HA HA HA HA... That was funny!... HA HA HA.. Funny as hell!... HA HA... HA... ah... Hu?!... Really?!... Ooohh, right... So that's why he... But what about... Oh, man! WTF?!... Is it just me or are they turning the plot into a cheesy romantic one?... Wait, wait... There's still hope... Ehr... Nope. There it is. They really are doing it... Thank you so much for the mainstream outcome, you guys. I really appreciate it.'
Basically, this movie was pretty entertaining until they started with the metaphysical, romantic mumbo jumbo.
But that was about it. I don't think it's a great film whether with or without the romantic BS.
A whole lot funny, though. Especially the first half or so.
Only fun the fun of it. It's not a great film.

Withnail and I Withnail and I
    4.0 Stars by xGary
Withnail & I is the tale of a pair of out of work actors in 1969 Camden who decide to get away from it all for a weekend in a country cottage. And that's about it; plot heavy this film is not. It's all about the character of Withnail, played to perfection to a pre-insufferable Richard E. Grant; in fact Grant was a tee-totaler when he made this film, but Bruce Robinson insisted that the leading actors be paralytic during filming, just to make it more authentic! The pair are like a foul-mouthed, drunken version of Laurel & Hardy as they stagger through the ordinary world in much the same way as Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo were in Fear & Loathing, except that this film is very, very British. This film is all about the dialogue, which is hilarious, containing some of the funniest swearing you'll ever hear! It is also, like Gilliam's film, making a comment about the times in which they lived; the end of the sixties. Except in Fear & Loathing, Thompson was bemoaning the loss of power and optimism of the American youth movement, and here Withnail is shown as an endearing but childish and cowardly person, constantly avoiding responsibility and life as a whole, through a cocktail of drink and drugs. He is left behind at the end, like the decade, as "I" gets a haircut and a job, and moves on with his life. Some may think that the "screaming homosexual" uncle Monty is a bit of a caricature and figure of fun, but he is in fact the most sensitive and sympathetic character in the film. it may not translate well to foreign audiences, but it will forever be a firm favourite amongst the British post hippy generation and students alike.

Yeah, yeah, I know... WTF, right?

    Wrong.

So, ok, it's not a masterpiece...

    Hu?!
    What the...
    OMFG!
    No way.
    How can it be?
I mean... Kutcher and Diaz in the leading roles... A plot about two people getting married in Vegas while under the influence of alcohol...
    Not a masterpiece?!... Really?
    Who would have thought?

    Well...
As it turns out, there are certain movies I'm willing to give a chance to, even though I'm well aware they won't be all that great. And all for the sake of a few good laughs. So maybe you shouldn't take my word for granted when it comes to comedy movies. Not unless you enjoy them the way I do. Which means to say separating them from all the other movies when it comes to decide whether they're good or not, and having a completely distinct rating system. And that's why I've decided, right from the start, to make a separate movie list for this genre. Because the way I enjoy this sort of movies is somewhat different from the way I enjoy all the others. While watching a comedy film, I'm not really looking for plot accuracy. Nor am I hoping the direction will swept me off my feet. I'm really just looking for a bit of fun.
All this to say that the above rating (as well as all my other ratings to comedy movies) should be perceived as a comparison within the genre and nothing but. And 3 stars means something like 'fun, but not too funny'. It won't crack you up, that's for sure. But it'll still be able to pull a few sincere laughs out of you.

    Or not.

It will depend on how much you enjoy the genre.
Recommended only to those who enjoy the genre just for the sake of a few good laughs.

If you're only looking for masterpieces, don't bother watching it. Nor any other comedy movie, for that matter.

    WALL-E WALL-E

Pixar has yet to let me down. Such an amazing track record, it makes one wonder where it will end!
I was not a big fan of "Cars," but even that is a really solid movie, better than most.
I had really high expectations for WALL-E going in so they had to live up to a huge build-up.
Let me start by saying that this was my four year old son's first movie going experience. Were they going to do what they had done before and keep him entertained and intellectually stimulated and me as well?
Ok, approximately 30 minutes into the movie and there has been almost no dialogue. There have been subtle intimations and some sophisticated concepts most of which were far beyond my son's level of comprehension at age four, but the nuances were there.
There were amazingly well-rendered landscapes and relationships forming even if noted only with clicks, chirps and whirs. Was my babe going to get it? Would he be able to stay focused? Was it enough?
He loved it and so did I. He commented on it. It actually made him look that much deeper and draw his own conclusions as to what was going on as there were no words to tell him and it (and he) was brilliant.
The movie is an amazing commentary on how we are ravaging our world and bringing ourselves closer to destroying it as well as ourselves. As we slip into a mire of sloth we lose the will to care amidst bright colors and shiny objects like ferrets drawn to a set of keys. The buttons we push bring us everything and we want for nothing save a sense of what is real and true.
Yeah, it is a Pixar movie. The kids will love the robots and the comedy and the colors and everything about it, but so will you because this movie really has something to say and does it in a way that would make Stanley Kubrick quite proud.
I hope the track record never ends.
See this one as soon as you can.
    Fantastic.

'This was a quiet town before you came in. Disgusting, but quiet.'

A typical Bud Spencer/Terence Hill flick, relying on comic action rather than the gunshots and tension some Westerns prefer. Not sure what I should call it, really.

Though not actually a fan of the genre (Westerns, I mean) I actually enjoyed this one. It's not what you'd deem an intellectual movie, but
both the mains have experience in this type of film. There is something highly amusing about the fact that Bud Spencer's facial expression rarely changes.

And taking the piss out of Mormon fanatics (any religious fanatics, come to think of it) scores with me.

P.S. I finally found the term. It's called a 'Spaghetti Western'.
Take a look if you're into Westerns or either of the mains.
