The Hurt Locker The Hurt Locker
    by Sarah
Quite simply one of the best war films I've ever seen. So much attention to detail in every frame and some excellent character development leads to one thrilling and sometimes emotional ride for audiences. Cinematography is of the highest standard and the documentry feel to it really puts you in the middle of all the action that is occuring. Many of the locations really paint a picture of what three men go through and how you might deal with it

The Hurt Locker, shines in incredible dramtic realism, where some Iraq films just hasn't quite got there. As an audience member the realism in this film means that you are going on the journey as the characters area. Consequently, this means that character development is so well done with this realistic style that you really get an understanding of these characters especially, Sgt. James. James is presented as a character who is addicted to the danger and adreanline rush that comes with being a soldier. He is incredibly fearless, much to the amazement of Sandborn and Eldridge. Eldridge is the younger of the three who looks up to his two superiors. Sanborn has much experience behind him but has never quite seen a soldier quite like James.

The three actors who play the main three leads are realtivly unknown. I think this is what works in the film; that you can seperate between the actor and the character that is being portrayed. Which is a highlight of this film. Jeremy Renner, who plays Sgt. Jamesis in the role of his life and plays the character with such intense emotion which really brings alive the characters true intentions. I'd love to see him nominated at the Oscars this year because it's one brilliant performance. The film should bag several oscar nominations this year and hopefully such win several.

Bigelow has directed one phenomenal films which will be spoken about for years to come. Just Outstanding. May very well be my film of 2009!

Hey Soph! You changed your username again, it's hard to keep up :P

Good to hear from you. How's things for you over in NZ?

That Film Talk site is pretty cool. I could only find the list from one of the guys, so I might look for the podcast next. I'm still waiting for 2009 to kick into gear (well, I've been a little out of the movie world for the most part). It takes ages for films to get to us.

And as for summer - thank god it's hot! Means more time for the beach and cricket.

Best Movie of 2009 so far, You have never seen anything quite like Ponyo, seriously its stunning. Not as dark/great as Spirited Away but definately a comparable Miazaky Masterpeice! I've seen it both in the American/English version and in the Japanese version, I strongly recommend you watch it in the Japanese version for the true experience. See it now!

To anyone who has already seen this movie, I apologize. I checked to see if any of you had rated it, and the people I recommended it to hadn't yet.

I almost never use the recommendation function, because it's overused to the extent of annoyance.

However, this film calls for an exception. If I can convince even one person to take in this piece of art, I'll be happy.

This is a transcendent piece of art that verifies the status of a master storyteller. The exquisite marriage of sound and imagery is far from being its only achievement, despite the critical responses. Coppola has been exploring the dynamics and complexities of family relationships throughout the course of his career, and he may have brought perfect closure here. He is a brave artist who disregards the confines of commercial American moviemaking and infuses his masterpiece with something as original as it is exciting. Vincent Gallo is someone whose work I am fairly unfamiliar with, but he delivers an Oscar-worthy, enigmatic piece of acting here that blew me away. The rest of the players are ideally cast as well, with Maribel Verdú holding her own opposite Gallo. This is a haunting, heart-wrenching cinema experience that needs to be seen. It pains me that a mediocre work like Inglourious Basterds gets praised to death while a legend's return to form is ignored. See this film.

You guys should all check out this film's official website. It's an independent feature film that's garnering extremely positive responses. If you're into dialogue-driven comedy/drama films, this will be right up your alley. I am one of the three leads in it (Mike Thorn), and I'm so honored to be involved. I'd love to spread it around a little more.

DVDs will be available online eventually, and it will be screened in festivals. So keep posted!

Just want to draw everyone's attention to this UK film starring Jennifer Connely and Paul Bettany playing Charles Darwin and Emma Darwin. Basically the film focusses on Darwin's theories on evolution and relationship with his wife. Contains various other Brit actors too.

Looking forward to this..due to reach UK cinemas this month.

Coen Bros. first feature film from 1984. One not to miss!
    Blood Simple Blood Simple

Marty hires a private investigator to spy on his wife, who he suspects of cheating. When Marty hires the investigator to kill his wife and her lover, things get very complex. (IMDB)

Blood Simple is the Coen Bros' first feature film from 1984. It also features Frances McDormand, wife of Joel Coean and frequent collaborator in their films. Blood Simple is quite simply brilliant and of course the beginnings of what would later become two of Hollywood?s great film directors. One of my favourite Coen bros films and perhaps one of my favourite films.

The film also has many man similar characteristics to the Coean Bros 2007 film No Country for Old Men. It's an incredibly dark tale and contains a lot of shots that are in No Country for Old Men. What is also brilliant about this is the use of diegetic sound. That being that it's mainly in the picture that we hear music and aspects of surround sound. We also hear who would later become one of the main characters narrating at the beginning, which is what was in No Country for Old Men. This creates a far more realistic image to the audience and you really feel part of the film.

Worth mentioning some great tracking shots following characters which are just genius and brilliant to watch. Blood Simple is obviously brilliantly directed and such the attention to detail to perfection. The tension in Blood Simple is evident in many scenes and really makes you the viewer on tender hooks itching to know what will come next. I found myself on the edge of my bed just like that. The cinematography, especially in the opening sequence is again perfection. When we are introduced to the two main characters we feel claustrophic in the scene mainly due to the brilliant lighting in this scene.

Blood Simple contains a cleverly written script. One which incorporates humour, with a dark, twisted tale in the form of a film-noir. With all that entrenched in the film, it stars off as a predictable story but with a few twists and turns ( which is what The Coen Bros later did in their films) it becomes more of a complex and more engaging tale which I feel is perfection ( as I've stated before.) I've also got to admit that it will feel like a David Lynch film for the first 40 mins.

Blood Simple is one of cinema's forgotten gems and one which is of course overshadowed by the Coens later and better known titles. If you?ve not got into their body of work yet start with this as it really is a masterful piece of work. Brilliant! Don't expect you?re average crime of passion when you watch this.

    Superb

    10/10

    Masterpiece.

One of Hitchcock's greats about two men who attempt the perfect murder simply for the thrill of it. Shot entirely in real-time through eight consecutive shots, this is a revolutionary piece of cinema!
