It is certainly a fun film to watch, but the real treasure lies in the filmmaking, where Hollywood was waking up to believe that they could do anything.
Tense, the dark atmosphere adds to the suspense. It's shocking and out-of-the-ordinary, that has been imitated many times and failed. This is a mainstrem film which hides it's masterclass under a layer of impending doom.
In the same way as Ivan's Childhood, this is a harrowing, hard smacking film that leaves the mind in the same mind-fuck state as the character. It is truely an astonishing experience to take in.
It hits the target with total precision. It's as black as a black comedy can get. Yet it's heartwarming, with a breathless backdrop. The character's are ones you will never forget.
A very intriguing social piece, set in an almost Brechtian atmospheric, dark setting. The characterisations is given a rare complexity, which in the end is an intellectual crafted oddity. Peter Lorre will be forever known for his role in the film, and deservedly so.
A hypnotic, constrained psychological film set amoungst towing trees and soggy ground so brilliantly photographed, that the film is an amazingly underrated.
This is an excellent movie. The film holds a pure intellectual wit that is rare and tempting. The final resolution has the whole film flipped, that the viewer has to see it more than once.
My opinion, along with Mean Streets, Scorsese's best film. One can't help looking at this film and seeing how realistic it's portrayal of the show business temptation it comes across as dark and disturbing, that it is almost surreal.
