| Avatar - PG-13 |
If ever there was a film where the technical grandeur takes over all that is wrong with the film, Avatar would be it. It is very hard to be cynical of a film where the world being presented is astonishing. For the first hour or so, it does look like you could be seeing something totally new. Unfortunately, it does not have the backbone to go down that route. The story is hackneyed (eco-environmentalism vs. gung ho action film) and there are many times where everything has to be explained to the point where it turns back into a stupid film. The main problem is that it is baggy and it lacks to find a fitting story to tell that we could be just as engaged by. James Cameron is a visionary, but visions are not quite enough to make a great film. Nor does the 3-D, which I had the pleasure to take the glasses off mid-way to see if it made a heck of a difference. The bottom line, it doesn't. Apart from the film being out of focus, I could see this film suit a proper big screen with perfectly sharp high definition. That being said if one were to take 3-D seriously, this is obviously the best one to see. Avatar is a spectacle worth observing, but as a film it has gaping flaws. The whole film is bagging the two strands and there is dialogue that is curl-inducing. It is also overlong and I can do without being explained what is happening all the time. However, few films can get away with being awarded a lot more with spectacle and setting. And boy, is watching Pandora an experience. |
