Coco avant Chanel (Coco Before Chanel)
PG-13
Even though I guess people were disappointed that it wasn't about Chanel's ascent to the top of the fashion world, it was still interesting. It's kinda nice that this movie wasn't about fashion even though I was looking forward to something like that. Instead it concentrates on a woman's persistence from her humble beginnings and doesn't just glaze over the difficult times. In this sense her story could have happened to anyone but that kind of humanizes her more. I like this movie because it's not afraid to back down from what it believes in. Kind of like Coco Chanel.
District 9

I am so impressed with this movie! Coming from someone with zero expectations and a period snob's haughty nose, I found District 9 to be a gripping, albeit slightly gimmicky narrative about the boundlessness of human desire illustrated to its finest in a human/alien dystopia. Everybody looks out for his own self interests, whether alien or human. Unrestrained greed is horrifying. This is one of the first wide-release films that actually made me think for a little bit. (and I don't mean to sound like a snob, really I don't) Allegory it is not, though. I really, really wish people would stop saying that.

Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor make such a magical pair. I think this may be the best movie I have ever seen in my life. It's so simple yet so perfect.

Maggie Smith is reason enough to love this film. And the score by Patrick Doyle is beyond beautiful. I loved the score so much I actually bought it from Amazon, something I never do.
