5 Fingers of Death (Tian xia di yi quan) - R This belongs in the Rival Schools subgenre of martial arts flicks, and it's definitely one that would top the list.
It starts off tame enough but builds up and up and delivers devastation and betrayal that almost becomes Shakespearean. Also if you've made it half way through only to find a lack a blood, don't fret, the spray will come and come hard in the last 3rd.

Strike (Stachka) - Unrated I loved this film. The pace is great, especially for a silent film. Those crazy Russians could actually make some exciting sequences that even get you today despite the stimuli we are used to.
It is also so stylistic and expressive that you can't help but marvel at this filmic amazement.
Plus you gotta love films that make the working man/women the ideal.
Definitely one of, if not the best (or maybe just my favorite) Russian film of that era.

Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter - R Allow me to gush: This film is AWESOME.
So it takes place in the times of the swashbuckle, you have your one dimensional (2 at most) hero, his smart as hell sidekick, who together comprise of a great vampire hunting team. The sidekick knows everything there is to know about vampire, and is intelligent as hell while Kronos, our hero, is like the gunslinger of fencing swords... or should I say samurai? Well that's actually where this film gets interesting as it shares so many attributes with the Italian western or the samurai film. Not only that but it has a healthy dose of Italian and French exploitation appeal, and is produced by a British studio (Hammer, to be exact). So what you have is a cowboy/samurai/brit-horror hybrid or sorts that works despite it's slow parts and especially because of it's cheese and B appeal.
It climaxes in an excited sword fight as well.
How can you loose?

Josie and the Pussycats - PG Call it a guilty pleasure, but I don't feel guilty. This film is actually quite hilarious in parts. Not only that it's well done. Direction is decent, writing is good. The satire, borders on parody but is still clever. Maybe it's a smart social comment hidden in a teen chick-flick.
Whatever it is, I dig the hell out of it.

Drive-In Massacre - R I enjoyed the shit out of this.
Mostly based around two cops investigating several drive-in killings. There's alot of interviewing and interrogating by the cops in this short film, but these still plenty of B-movie goodness and exploitationy smiles and violence.
What more do you want? Logic in a film?

The Wolf Man - Unrated Brilliant. It has aged, but I feel it is still a strong film.
It took me a bit to get used to Lon Chaney as the lead, but I still feel he did a adequate job in showing to torment of becoming a werewolf. Alot of the film seems to be focused on the insanity of believing you are something that is unbelievable. Although it moves a little fast, I still feel the process shown throughout the movie succeeds in what he sets out to do, from Larry Talbot arriving in town, which is essentially foreign to him and learning of a legend, to the (obviously) dramatic conclusion of - well I won't spoil it, even though I sure you can guess.
Anyway, I feel this film for sure belongs in the ranks of the better monster films, ie Frankenstein. And really worth a watch if only for Claude Rains.

The Kentucky Fried Movie - R It was a hoot for sure. It must have played a hell of a lot better at the time it was made. That's not to say I didn't think it was funny. July 25, 2009

The Body Snatcher - Unrated Although a B-picture for sure, this is still a great Val Lewton production. Boris Karloff really is great in it. July 25, 2009

Lisa, Lisa (Axe) - R I think this is borderline brilliant. Well maybe not, but it's a hell of a great exploitationy b-movie. And at an hour and change you won't need to spend much time on it, but it will be time well spent. July 21, 2009
