I'm not European, I don't plan on being European, so who gives a crap if they're socialist? They could be fascist anarchists--that still wouldn't change the fact that I don't own a car. |

I have been interested in movies since I was a child. They have the ability to transport you to different worlds, whether it is the seedy underworld of organized crime to flying a spaceship to distant planets. As I have aged, my opinions on film have changed but the essence of what I look for in a movie has not, a solid story with good characters. I am always interested in discussing films with people, even if we do not agree. My favorite genres in order are Comedies, Sci Fi/Fantasy, Martial Arts, Film Noir, Spy Thrillers and Westerns. My other interests are music and comic books (no geek jokes). I am a carpenter by trade and like to work with my hands. There is nothing more satisfying than starting with a pile of materials and putting it all together into a finished product. |

The Dark Knight
PG-13
There is a lot of hype surrounding the Dark Knight film. Critics are nominating Heath Ledger for an Oscar and the film itself said to be the best comic book film ever. Those are bold statements and I have a problem with them. As a comic book fan and reader since the age of ten, I have seen many films and cartoons based on the comic book genre, some good and some bad. I will not deny that the Dark Knight is among the good pile but in no way is it the best.
I really wanted to hate Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker. With his death, everyone has martyred his performance in this film. It reminds me of when Brandon Lee died during the filming of the Crow. Is Heath Ledger the best Joker? No. Did Heath do a good job? Yes. I found myself enjoying his performance and his deadpan delivery of the Joker's dark humor. I even enjoyed the tongue flick and the multiple origins of his famous smile as he tortured potential victims. What they failed to capture in this performance is the maniacal laughter and the trademark green hair. I know they are small items but the Joker is my favorite villain of all-time and those are part of the essence of the Joker.
I also feel Heath's death overshadowed the very strong performance of Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/ Two Face. They captured the duality of a man struggling between right and wrong perfectly. I felt for Harvey and his tortured soul as he struggled to deal with his deformity and the loss of his fiancé. Gary Oldman was again solid as James Gordon and in my opinion the best portrayal of the character to date. My only critic is that his wifes name was Barbara and he has two sons. Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Maggie Gyllenhaal fleshed out the remainder of the supporting cast and did a wonderful job.
After two films, I have come to the realization that Christian Bale is a horrible Batman. His performance as Bruce Wayne is his strong point, but as Batman he is too stiff and that growl in his voice becomes too prominent to ignore. I also found it to be a tad to long as a looked at my watch and realized I had over an hour to go. Overall, the Dark Knight is a solid movie with A-List actors giving first-rate performances but don't believe all the hype.
The Incredible Hulk
PG-13
The Incredible Hulk is a revamp of the Hulk film from 2003. It retells the origin of Bruce Banner and the Hulk this time played by Edward Norton. He is focused on trying to find a cure for his ailment this time around. The movie seems to follow the origin laid out in the Ultimates comic book from Marvel Comics. Bruce and Betty are unaware they are trying to recreate the super soldier serum for the military; they think they are working on a cure for radiation poisoning. Insert a little Gamma radiation and viola you have the Incredible Hulk.
The cast for this movie is good but I liked Jennifer Connelly as Betty Ross better than Liv Tyler did. The main star of the film is the CGI of the Hulk and Abomination. In the darker scenes, both CGI characters looked good with the exception of the Hulk in the rain sequence. The rain looked to shiny on the Hulk's skin and made the character stand out like a sore thumb.
The story flowed better in this film and they laid a lot of groundwork for a sequel and spin-offs. First, Tony Stark appears at the end talking about putting together a super team, aka the Avengers. They alluded to this as well in the Iron Man film with Nick Fury. Second, both the Hulk and Iron Man refer to Captain America. In Iron Man, there was a picture of Captain America's shield on Tony's computer and in the Hulk; they refer to the super soldier serum that turned Steve Rodgers into Captain America. Finally, the doctor Samuel Sterns gets Gamma radiated blood dripped on him during the creation of the Abomination and his head starts to grow. Doctor Samuel Sterns becomes the Leader a rival of the Hulk with all the strength of the Hulk plus brains.
No Country for Old Men
R
No Country for Old Men is a brilliant film that gripped me from the beginning. The Coen Brothers manage to tell a story of violence and crime in a beautifully artistic way. The very first scene with the deputy and Anton sets the theme, style and pace of the film. This film refuses to be classified in one particular genre. It has everything.
The characters had depth and a quirky sense of humor that you find in all of the Coen Brother films. Javier Bardem was cold, brutal and methodical as Anton Chigurh and I understand why he won the Oscar for his role. The hunter/prey chase of the film had me rooting for Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones to survive this sadistic tale.
Juno
PG-13
I enjoyed this well directed, quirky comedy about teen pregnancy and the effects on Juno's world. I have to admit I am jealous of Diablo Cody, the screenwriter, on the success of her first film. Her first time out and she wrote a gem with realistic characters and witty dialogue and I will be curious to see her next film. My only complaint would be some of the forced slang Juno and her friends speak through out the film.
Vacancy
R
From the very start of this film, the director manages to build a tense atmosphere. This film is a perfect example of a suspense film even though I predicted how it was going to end. The actors portrayed their characters perfectly and managed to establish a connection with me, so I cared if they survived. The mood was reminiscent of the film Psycho and had several interesting twists.

Casablanca

What can I say about Casablanca that you have not heard before? This film has everything you could want, intrigue, action, romance and comedy.
3.
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark)
PG
I watched this 6 times at the local dollar theatre when it first came out. I used to run around with a whip reenacting the movie (fake snake pit as well). Harrison Ford at his best as the wise cracking, hard nosed archaeologist trying to find the Ark of the Covenant.
4.
GoodFellas
R
"As long as I can remember, I've always wanted to be a gangster." This is my number one movie about organized crime. How can you go wrong with De Niro, Pesci and Liotia? This movie has three of my top all time favorite scenes. 1."How am I funny Henry?" Joe Pesci breaking Ray Liotia's balls in this scene is scary and hilarious at the same time. 2.When Henry Hill finds out Karen (Lorraine Bracco) is raped and Henry just walks over and pistol-whips his punk ass in front of his friends. I know I would do the same if anyone messed with someone I loved. 3.The steady cam shot of Henry and Karen entering the Copacabana through the back door, passing everyone who works there with a smile and a hello. Then walks to the headwaiter, tips him and is seated up front. Power and respect are shown brilliantly in this scene.
5.
To Catch a Thief
Unrated
Grace Kelly smolders on screen in this great Hitchcock movie. I still get chills from the fireworks scene.

Watchmen
by JerrySo, anyone that knows me for real (or maybe through other means) knows that I HATE The Watchmen comic book series.
It's too long, it's too boring, it's not a really original story, the art is okay, the characters are less than inspiring, and to be completely honest I believe that Alan Moore's writing is slightly over-rated. (I also think that Neil Gaiman and Frank Miller are waaaaay over-rated writers as well)
I won't go into many other details or jokes I make about The Watchmen comic series because I don't want to give any spoilers of the plot just yet, but after seeing this teaser trailer at the beginning of TDK I know that even if I never see the actual movie, that the trailer was more interesting than the comic.
The imagery, bad or good was directly out of the pages of the comic. The Comedian looked just like the Comedian. Dr. Manhatten looked just like Dr. Manhatten.
The scene where the Owl ship is hovering over a very cranky mob with the Comedian standing on it's eye portal was RIGHT OUT OF THE COMIC!
I am really hoping that something I read EVERY SINGLE YEAR in the desperate hope to see what everyone else sees in this boring story is FINALLY made enjoyable to me through a movie.
The other extremely boring and much of the story pointless comic series, V For Vendetta was made enjoyable by the Wachowski brothers, and I am hoping that Zack Snyder is able to do it this time as well.
He's 50/50 in my book because while I really enjoyed his Dawn Of The Dead remake, I hated his collaboration with Frank Miller with 300.
I'm willing to give it a chance as I am really hoping that with TDK and then The Watchmen that all those infatuated with the Marvel movie formula will see just how great DC Comics and their properties really are.I'm not recommending the movie just yet, but the trailer was amazing!

The Dark Knight
by JeremyBest film of 2008 so far and the best superhero film ever. Heath Ledger is certain to be nominated and will probably win for his truly mad performance as the joker. Yet there is Method to his Madness, this crazed character does make sense in his own twisted thinking. The film more than the original poses some extreemly difficult ethical questions concerning right and wrong, hero and villian, questions that are not nescessarily answered. Once again Nolan has redfined the comic book genre and has continued the most original and masterly film series out today. See this film!

Mamma Mia!
by JeremyOne of my favourite films of 2008. A spectacularly fun movie experience, that will have you dancing in your seats, when I saw it people actually got up to dance at the end of the film. Meryl Streep, the greatest actress alive, owns this movie an just and has a ball with it. In fact although the plot is corny and unbelievable it doesn't matter as the film never takes it self seriously even for a moment, it just fun and the movie as a result is just so much fun. Whether or not your an ABBA fan or even a musical fan this film will put a smile on your face. It easily will be considered this year's Hairspray.

The Happening
by JerryI really liked this movie.
Sure, it was somewhat slow, and some things were hard to follow, somewhat disorienting I would say, and it was filled with question upon question and didn't really explain anything at all......sort of the way that the Cloverfield story was told.
Except for some major things. The characters were emotional, they were confused with what was happening, they were realistic and likable. All of the things that were lacking in "Blowverfield".
You never really truly find out what happens. You never see the huge scope of how the military reacts, or how other parts of the country react because this is mainly about the main characters of the story......without the ridiculous first person angle that supposedly would "put us in the experience".
You never get a look at the "monster". What you do get is the shocking aspect of witnessing people killing themselves, and not being able to explain why they are doing it.
It's a great suspenseful, mysterious story.
I am very glad that I saw it.......I've seen it twice already, and would be willing to see it again.
If you want to see it with someone, call me up. I'm your huckleberry.THIS takes everything that I hated about Cloverfield and makes it interesting!
You won't like it, but it's very, very good.posted 40 days ago -

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
by JerryWhat happened here? How could this have been so mediocre?
-Was the problem that Ford is older?
No, his character still worked as a very cool Indiana Jones.
-Was there a problem with Mutt Williams? Nah. I really like Shia LeBouf. His character was solid in a classic way that made him feel like he fit in he franchise. He had solid emotion (even if it was over the top at times), and he seems like he could be a decent action hero.
-Was it that there were no Nazi's for Indy to crush?
Nope. The Soviets did a fine job at being replacement bags of douches. Even if the main villainess was weird with weird powers that were never really used, she was still creepy enough a foil.
-How about the directing? Could have been this. It seemed that many of the scenes and dialogue was very random, with no real driving force behind the story, and no emotional attachment to any character including Dr. Henry Jones.
They tried a few times with the half-warm-hearted reflection at the photos of Marcus and Papa Jones, and the reveal of the relationship between Indy and Marion, but it seemed like it was just in there to tug a string, or get a laugh.
I guess the director can only do so much with the story that he is given to direct but damnit, this is supposed to be a Spielberg classic Indy movie, not a haphazardly put together serial action flick! Still I don't think this was the real problem.
-Was it the awful story given to us by the "genius" George Lucas complete with way over the top events (even for an Indy movie), and poor story details, hideous dialogue, and a collection of side characters that we don't give a shit for because they don't mean anything to the story?
DING! DING! DING!
George, you've lost it! Give up movie making and stick to special effects, camera technology, and audio advancements.
Leave the story telling to someone with real imagination.
This movie just didn't fit into the Indiana Jones mythos. It didn't feel like an Indy movie. The story wasn't there, and wasn't filled with the details that make IJ movies fun and leaving you with the feeling that you would watch them over and over again, even if they were on FX or a similar channel all cut up for time and content.
I saw it once, I'll see it again just to make sure the feeling was right, and then maybe one time on DVD. But it doesn't provide the feelings I have for the original three.
I kind of left the movie theater feeling like I got to see my grandmother at hospice. Sad to see her suffering, but happy with all of the previous memories she provided me with, and the opportunity to see her one last time before she passed.
How disappointing. If you want to see the greatness of Indiana Jones, then watch one of the previous three movies. If you want to just see Indy, then you should check this out.
