Predator (1987, R) |
|
| 2 |
Aliens (1986, R)
Another Stan Winston creation with Cameron direction, genius. |
|
| 3 |
The Crow (1994, R)
Dark, gothic, amazing soundtrack and the best comic book adaptation made. The scenes of the crow gliding through the mist and darkness accompanied by Nine Inch Nails 'Dead Souls' is inspired ;) |
|
| 4 |
The Nightmare Before Christmas (2008, PG) |
|
| 5 |
Beetle Juice (Beetlejuice) (1988, PG)
Beetlejuice is spooktacular, original and again beautifully dark and twisted, I absolutely love the spooky, kooky design of everything, its sheer Burton gold in every sense, I love it. The soundtrack is awesome and the effects are cheesey yet lovely haha and as for Keaton....he's perfect as the wicked, disgusting raspy voiced ghoul. |
|
| 6 |
RoboCop (1987, R) |
|
| 7 |
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980, PG)
The best Star Wars film made, dark, brooding, the now famous plot twist and revelation which is pretty much folklore now haha its all near perfect with Empire, the outstanding Hoth battle sequence at the start to the breathtaking Bespin ending and all with the greatest character in villain history included :) Boba Fett :) |
|
| 8 |
Ghost Busters (Ghostbusters) (1984, PG) |
|
| 9 |
Blade Runner (1982, R)
Probably the greatest sci-fi distopian lookin flick made. Really grim yet sooo ice cool. Hauer rules in this, so uneasy so lethal and unpredictable, the score is spooky and touching and the action is cold and realistic. So many details and so many different stories haunt this film from creation to final cuts which makes it so historic in cinematic history. Love those futuristic police Spinners. |
|
| 10 |
Ed Wood (1994, R)
Very moving and sensitive, I like old black and white monster flicks and Mr Wood was great at it..in a sense haha. This is still dark with Burton's style but still very strong and gets the story across beautifully, by the end of the film you will feel very close to all members involved and you wont want the story to end. |
|
| 11 |
Batman Returns (1992, PG-13) |
|
| 12 |
The Addams Family (1991, PG-13)
Charles Addams..another genius. The whole thing is so up my street, I love the house more than anything. The look and design is spot on and really atmospheric, great performances all round and charming effects that still look nice today, wanted to see more of the house interior though. Lets have a Munsters flick like this. |
|
| 13 |
Vamp (1986, R)
Best vampire flick ever hehe very 80's and very sexy, Grace Jones is gorgeous and the look of it is so seedy and dark, really hits the mark and makes the atmosphere perfect, Dusk Till Dawn idea here have you noticed? |
|
| 14 |
Big Trouble in Little China (1986, PG-13)
Best Carpenter flick by miles haha so cool, love Russell in it and love the look..LOVE IT. This film has everything you could want, its totally awesome in everyway and hits all the targets, faultless, inspired. |
|
| 15 |
Batman (1989, PG-13)
Not as dark as the second (it should of been hehe) for me but still a classic. Jack as the Joker was inspired and for me Keaton is the best Batman, silent, menacing, crazy look in his eyes and real, not some muscle bound pretty boy. |
|
| 16 |
Legend (1985, PG)
This film is really beautiful, a truely dark fairytale. Tim Curry is awesome as Darkness and the Tangerine Dream score is great. Saw this when I was very young and liked it then, the cross with twisted Muppets and dark sword and sorcery is really spellbinding and visualised so well despite 100% sets, Ridley Scott at his best before he started making more serious affairs. Cruise is abit wet though. |
|
| 17 |
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977, PG)
Errr, what can I say? you all know this, its the greatest movie ever made. Almost perfect, combined with the rest of the series its unbeatable. The first Star Wars film and the film that made cinematic history, it changed history and created film going for a new generation of viewers and directors, this film is a landmark in human history, its that big. |
|
| 18 |
Labyrinth (1986, PG)
Another classic from my childhood. Bowie is cool here (although when I was a kid I thought he was a female hahaha) the Labyrinth is really twisted and cool looking. Great imagination and creature design all round with some awesome classic effects with the good old ways of matte painting and puppetry. The Magic Dance is a great song as well. |
|
| 19 |
Predator 2 (1990, R) |
|
| 20 |
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983, PG)
Probably my fav as a kid because of the endor battle and jabba. There's alot here to like, the whole Jabba line with Rancor and Sarlac battles are just cinematic gold, they are brilliant fun and strip any modern film easily. After that you have the brilliant Endor forest battle and a gorgeous space battle with the Falcon, a host of rebel fighters and another trench style finish. Its all enough to blow your mind as it never lets up for a second and is quite quite perfect in execution. |
|
| 21 |
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005, PG-13)
Best of the newbie flicks, more adult, darker and of course it completes the story arch, but best of all the action is great, loved the 'plan 66' sequence and most of the dark brooding fights and plotline :) finally a Star Wars film that compares to Empire in sorts. |
|
| 22 |
Alien 3 (1992, R)
Great look, gorgeous alien design, the movie grows on you. Despite its problems this flick has grown to become just as popular as the first two films, the brown and orange hues in the set design and feel of the film really appeal to me and make the film stand out on its own. Another great cast roster just like the first two and a really hard hitting emotional plot make this a very unique animal in all the right ways :) |
|
| 23 |
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002, PG)
Getting better here, the intro of Jango Fett and the stormtroopers are cool moments and the Jedi battle on Genonsis at the end is topps. The action is as Star Wars normally is and thats very good, all the lights and sounds you would expect and it still works well. CGI is still 100% from Lucas and his boys, depsite some ropey looking alien designs they all look and react very realistically but its the space ship dogfights and flybys that still look the best. |
|
| 24 |
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999, PG)
Looks great, love Mos Eisley, easily recognised as the Star Wars universe and always looks good. There's also an excellent pod race sequence which is the highlight of the film really, apart from that its pretty average but for the exciting Sith lord Darth Maul, he really saves the flick when it could of been a complete throw away, even though it is too childish in many places, Maul's prescense is golden and the fact he dies in such a meaningless way really sums up the disappointment with this film. |
|
| 25 |
The Terminator (1984, R)
Arnie classic, very gritty, hard and seedy looking. Saw this when I was about 12 and fudging loved it. The endoskeleton is yet again another Stan Winston creation of genius and the police station shoot up, hell yeah baby!!. Better than 2 for sure, its darker, brutal and more harsh with non stop tense chasing. The main thing is its an adult film, the way its meant to be and the way it was originally intended, this is why T2 and T3 are so poor. |
|
| 26 |
The Crow: City of Angels (1996, R) |
|
| 27 |
Sleepy Hollow (1999, R) |
|
| 28 |
Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987, R) |
|
| 29 |
Haunted Honeymoon (1986, PG)
Bet not many have seen this, Wilder genius here, really spooky 'Addams' style fun with good laughs, a kinda 'Hammer Horror' old fashioned style horror flick that isn't scary atall lol I just love the look of these films, the big mansions, sweeping staircases, flowing curtains, cobwebs etc.. |
|
| 30 |
The Goonies (1985, PG) |
|
| 31 |
To Be or Not to Be (1983) (, PG) |
|
| 32 |
The Naked Gun - From the Files of Police Squad! (1988, PG-13)
The best of the trilogy by far, Neilsen is so good at what he does best here.Ssimpson is also very good as Nordberg as is George Kennedy as the chief. The original series is also brilliant but this captures all the best gags and makes them look and feel better with alittle more budget. Much better than Airplane. |
|
| 33 |
Near Dark (1987, R)
Hell yeah, what a cast, my dream team almost, Paxton, Henriksen, Goldstein, Wright, perfect. I dont like the desert feel for the vamps but this is still an awesome bloodsucker. The classic bar scene is violent and sadistic yet you wanna join them. Wright is cute and Henriksen rules as always, Bishop as a vampire lol |
|
| 34 |
Dracula (1931, Unrated) |
|
| 35 |
Interview with the Vampire (1994, R)
This is a tricky one. The whole vampire life story is amazing, charting history through the eyes of a vampire. The look is extremely well done and its got a classic feel about it. Seeing vampires in different countries and periods is also cool. There maybe too many big names in it for my liking, alittle too 'Hollywood', should of had some unknows really. Gorgeous to watch though and with a haunting soundtrack its quite beautiful, a work of art in places. |
|
| 36 |
Stir Crazy (1980, R) |
|
| 37 |
The Untouchables (1987, R)
This is an amazing action man style look at a serious story. It rocks, almost like young guns in the 30's USA but with alot of heart and top rate acting. Costner loves himself too much as usual but Connery, De Niro and Garcia are cool in their roles, they suit them just right, although Connery is slightly hammy, but lets not forget Billy Drago in his slick cream suit. Its quite emotional here and there and some scenes are cinematic classics eg..the station steps gunfight sequence, the bridge ambush, Drago being chucked off the roof, the bar bomb at the start and the ending really makes you wanna cheer for the good guys :) |
|
| 38 |
The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991, PG-13) |
|
| 39 |
The Blues Brothers (1980, R) |
|
| 40 |
Spaceballs (1987, PG)
Probably the last modern Brooks spoof before he lost his touch. There is another excellent cast here, the usual brooks gang, the highlight has to be Moranis as Dark Helmet, but lets not forget Brooks and his great little tash LOL he looks naked without it as he normally has one. The effects are actually pretty good as well, mainly Pizza the Hut and spaceball 1. To be honest this is a flick that I would love to see a sequel for. |
|
| 41 |
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2) (2008, PG-13)
Monster mash springs to mind with this sequel hehe its good, plain and simple. With a better story line and more action this Hellboy is a better animal than the first. The film looks really good, its dark, gloomy and goth and at the same time bright, full of imagination and kinda mythical. Everyone looks great..'old Red', Abe, Liz and newcomer/leader of the team the professor krauss. The effects and makeup are really nice on all characters and some monsters yet lacking on others. |
|
| 42 |
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992, G) |
|
| 43 |
Ghostbusters 2 (1989, PG)
Not as good as the first and a slight rerun but still very enjoyable. The cast work really well together and the effects are still nice. It was a huge hit when it came out due to the first and it does deliver. The update of Slimer and Ecto 1 are nice along with the story line but the main baddie doesn't quite hit the mark. Still fun and the Bobby Brown rap as the tune for the film is pretty cool yet dated. |
|
| 44 |
Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans (2009, R)
Hmmmm double edged sword hehe I liked this for its imagery and ideas, my love for vampire and werewolf films sways me to the dark side and I cant help but love the blood dripping, hairy moon walking action :) |
|
| 45 |
Air America (1990, R)
What a surprise this was, looked naff when I saw the trailer all those moons ago but it turned out to be funny and enjoyable. Cant quite put my finger on it, there's just something so likeable here, Gibson and Downey work well together, it all looks so fun and relaxing doing there job, makes you wanna join up n bum around in the air force to haha |
|
| 46 |
Tommy Boy (1995, PG-13) |
|
| 47 |
Mystery Men (1999, PG-13)
Ohh this is sooo good, before Stiller hit the big time, this is such a good comedy, great cast, great ideas, alittle camp but that just adds to the look and feel. Ever heard of a comic book hero called 'The Tick'?? well this is the closest thing to the live action movie. If you know what Im talking about you'll know what to expect, if you don't then you might not like this. |
|
| 48 |
Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country (1991, PG)
Im not a 'trekkie' but this is the best Trek flick. Its got a good solid plot and plenty of decent action, the snow planet with its prison has good scenes, the space battles are nice, the assassination is pretty cool and the final rescue is well done. |
|
| 49 |
South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut (1999, R)
Excellent movie of the brilliant series. Its really sharp and very very verbal unlike the TV counterpart. It looks good, the animation has computer help here n there which really adds to the effects. The story is actually not too bad but its not great, but its so funny and has tonnes of totally un-pc jokes, comments and crude gags you just cant not like it lol it surpasses The Simpsons by miles as its for true adults. As usual Cartman is the star. |
|
| 50 |
Major League (1989, R)
If you dont like baseball dont worry, this is still great fun. Quite cheeky and wisecracking, it has aged ok, I dont think many people have seen it here in the UK actually, cos of its sport content. There's a trilogy out there but dont bother this is the best, give it a try. |
|
| 51 |
Muppet Treasure Island (1996, G) |
|
| 52 |
The 'Burbs (1989, PG)
I watched this so much when I was in high school, its lost alittle of its bite in time but its still ooky and spooky.the cast is perfect, Hanks in his golden comedy era, and I love the way they snoop around all the time. Thing is when yr a kid, we all did this right? mess around in the garden and creep over next doors fence hee hee |
|
| 53 |
AVP - Alien Vs. Predator (2004, PG-13)
OK, if you see the cinema version this is kinda lame but if you get the US uncut DVD its much better. Overall its still a shame they went with the kiddie less violence and blood approach, I love these two franchises and they HAVE to be for adults only,no question. It still looks good, the queen fight is great, it just needed alittle more care and attention with the plot. Rumours of Arnie making a cameo if he lost the governors election were true and that would have really raised the bar, a Dutch cameo, damn shame there. |
|
| 54 |
The Cable Guy (1996, PG-13)
I liked this, alot didn't but I thought it was dark, funny and showed Carrey in a different comedic light. He really is disturbing lol love the trouble he causes Broderick, makes u cringe and glad its not you. Underrated, this much better than Carrey's over the top performances and you can relate to it which makes it work so much better. |
|
| 55 |
Since You've Been Gone (1998, R)
This is a grower, watch it afew times. Makes you wonder about your own old school friends and what a reunion would be like. Some of the people in this are really great, not heard of but make their mark.the surprises of seeing old chums and the jealously, spite, hatred, revenge etc..that erupts when together again. Schwimmer is great as the slimy wannabe loved by everybody creep, then there's the nerds, jocks, weirdo's, annoying newly weds, maniacs etc..its really very amusing. |
|
| 56 |
School of Rock (2003, PG-13) |
|
| 57 |
BASEketball (1998, R) |
|
| 58 |
The Love Bug (1968, G)
Easily the best Herbie flick and one of the best live action Disney films. Great effects, nice acting, Disney pro Dean Jones again with brilliant back up from another Disney pro Tomlinson and a cute story. I loved this as a kid and still do, the final long race is also quite exciting and good fun. The US DVD is loaded with extras. |
|
| 59 |
Treasure Island (1950, PG)
Now this is a real classic, true acting being performed here, Newton is made for this role as he showed in numerous other pirate flicks and a sequel to this. Its extremely good and looks realistic for its time with glorious technicolour and some lovely matt painting work (if alittle fantasised). The whole film has that golden era of cinema look, crisp colours, dashing gents with well spoken accents and a great rugged historical shine that most modern modern flicks miss. I was brought up on classics like this, kids nowadays will laugh probably, shame, they know not of the real movies hehe |

Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971, G)Wasn't well recieved I believe but again this was in the video machine (the large metal box with a wire connected remote lol) so much. Its imaginative and fun and easy to loose yourself in the fantasy world. It still looks great today, I still love the end sequence where the knights take on the nasty Germans, the old spookish house where Egglatine lives with Cosmic Creepers, is she a witch? and of course the animated footie match. |
|
| 61 |
Blackbeard's Ghost (1968, G)
Another great pirate themed flick, again from Disney. I love the innocent effects n look compared to today, it's lovely, spookyish, charming and Ustinov is pretty funny too. The highlight is the athletics event and I loved the big spooky looking Inn which the old ladies ran and where Blackbeard haunted. |
