it seems the higher ratings are coming from people who were familiar with the graphic novels before seeing the film. as someone who wasn't, i share some of the other complaints relating to the lack of exposition in this film -- it almost felt like this could have been a sequel. also, as a music/soundtrack snob, i've gotta agree with the criticism with regard to this film's music. while the tracks themselves were all fine, they just didn't seem to fit with the scenes and were entirely too prominent. in particular, leonard cohen's, "hallelujah" during the slo-mo superhero sex scene was a total waste, and just plain stupid. speaking of slo-mo, way too much in this film, although the long running time of almost 3 hours seemed to go by relatively quick.

trailer for this looked decent. and rachel mcadams, well, ya know, she looked more than decent.
