The X-Files: I Want to Believe (The X Files 2) (2008,  PG-13)
The X-Files: I Want to Believe (The X Files 2)
I really wanted to like this movie more than the rating I gave it. I mean I am an X-Files fanatic. Back in the day, it was one of two shows that I scheduled things around so I wouldn't missing seeing it. The other show was Buffy. And it was cool seeing Mulder and Scully back in action, as they are called in to help with the search for a missing female FBI agent. And it's a self contained movie that doesn't even bother to tie up any of that old alien mythology storyline. But it just didn't have that old spark even when Mulder goes off and start spouting meta pyhsical stuff and Scully looks at him all crazy. They needed more of that and not have them involved in what's basically a case that's somewhat subdued. It's a little weird but you may have seen weirder stuff on cable these days. Mulder does get so say a lot of funny one liners though. Check it out just because it's X-Files. Nuff said. Oh, and I have no idea what Amanda Peet and Xzibit are doing in this film, no idea at all.

Fox Mulder: This is not an exact science. If it were me, I'd be on the guy 24/7. I'd be in bed with him kissing his holy ass.
ASAC Dakota Whitney: Father Joe is a convicted pedophile.
Fox Mulder: [surprised] ... Maybe I'd stay out of bed with him.

The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
Just saw Dark Knight for the second time, but on this viewing it was at an IMAX theatre. And it blew me away. It comes close to being a masterpiece. There a few little issues to talk about. But let me get to the good stuff first. Christian Bale returns as the masked hero and is solid once again. He is supported by one of the best casts in film history. Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman all return for their respective roles and are very good. Newcomers Maggie Gyllenhaal, Aaron Eckhart, and of course Heath Ledger join the mix wonderfully. The story has pyschopathic terrorist Joker (Ledger) leading a crimewave through Gotham City that Batman, Lt. Gordon (Oldman) and DA Harvey Dent (Eckhart) team up to contend with. Also they have to deal with the rival mob gangs who threaten to overrun the city. Simple enough story that takes a few twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. The action scenes are truly mind blowing, especially on IMAX. Everyone should see a movie on IMAX at least once. And you couldn't choose a better movie than Dark Knight. Ledger is simply amazing as The Joker. One of the best performances I've seen in awhile. He becomes the character so much that you really forget about him as an actor and focus on his portrayal of the Joker. The effects, music score, and look of this film are all amazing. It's truly an amazing piece of work. The only negatives would be Bale's voice as Batman. It's raspier and at times sounds comical. And I really thought Ledger could have had a few more scenes. Other than that I thought this film was one of the year's best. From the thrilling opening bank robbery scene to the final confrontation between Batman and Joker. And Dent's transformation from Gotham's white night into Two-Face. This is truly epic film-making. A must see.

The Joker: Do I look like a guy with a plan?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Joker: You see, nobody panics when things go according to plan. Even if the plan is horrifying. If I told people that a gangbanger was going to get shot, or a busload of soldiers was going to get blown up, nobody would panic. Because it's all part of the plan. But tell people that one tiny little mayor is going to die and everyone loses their minds!

Step Brothers (2008,  R)
Step Brothers
Hysterical comedy with Ferrell and Reilly at each other throats when their respective parents get married. One of the most profane movies you will ever see with curse words being thrown about like confetti. But extremely funny. Definetly not for the little ones.

Male Therapist: Tell me a little about yourself.
Dale Doback: Well, I am a janitor at a college. Most people think I am dumb but I can look at a math equation and solve it immediately.
Male Therapist: Is this Good Will Hunting?
Dale Doback: No
Male Therapist: It sounds awfully familiar to Good Will Hunting.
Dale Doback: Yeah... well anyways, my best friend is Ben Affleck.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008,  PG)
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Just as good as the first Narnia film but loaded with way more action. The storyline has the four Pevensie kids returning to Narnia after 1 year for them, but 1300 years for everyone else in Narnia. They team up with Prince Caspian to battle his uncle King Miraz and his army of Telmarines. Miraz and his army has driven the Narnia folk into hiding and rules all over the land. Aslan the lion hasn't been seen in years. So the kids are whisked backed to Narnia and quickly become embroiled in battle. Pretty fast moving film with gorgeous scenery, and epic battle scenes. Also several new characters besides Caspian are introduced. The best is Reepicheep a heroic mouse who loves a good battle and Trumpkin, a dwarf who has lost his faith in Aslan. All the original kids return in good form especially Anna Popplewell as the eldest girl Susan. She rocks with her bow and arrow. All in all a good followup to the first film. Can't wait for the next one.

Trumpkin: You may find Narnia a more savage place than you remember.

Tropic Thunder (2008,  R)
Tropic Thunder
I laughed my ass off at this movie. Mainly Robert Downey Jr steals the show. He is hilarious from the word go. Ben Stiller is not that good acting wise. But he does a great job directing, mixing comedy and action quite well. Jack Black is ok, he gets in a few good lines. The supporting cast though is solid from Brandon T. Jackson's Alpa Chino to Nick Nolte's gruff ex-vet to the hilarious Danny McBride's explosion expert Cody. If you get easily offended, this might not be your type of movie. But the laughs come very fast and frequently. And the action is top notch. And the buzzed about cameo by Mr. Tom Cruise is hilarious. You will see Tom like never before. But back to Robert Downey. He kills in this movie. I can't praise him enough. Coupled with Iron Man, this was truly RDJ's year.
