His Girl Friday is my favorite film of all time. It has been since the first time I saw it, when I was 12. Cary Grant is never better as newspaper editor Walter Burns, who is about to lose his ace reporter and ex-wife Hildy Johnson (a superb performance by Rosalind Russell) to marriage to an insurance man (Ralph Bellamy). Just so happens a major news story breaks as convicted murderer Earl Williams, who is about to be put to death, escapes from custody. Walter convinces Hildy to take this last job assignment and he will sign a nice big check for an insurance policy for the soon to be wed couple. During her investigation, Hildy manages to track down Williams and tries to keep him safe from the police and the mayor. A wonderful mix of comedy and some drama make this my all time favorite film. Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell make a terrific dream team. The one liners fly fast and furious, expertly handled by the entire cast. Great direction by the legendary Howard Hawks. Highly recommended. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Wilson, reporter: Any dope on how he escaped? McCue, reporter: Maybe the sheriff let him out so Williams could vote for him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walter Burns: Sorta wish you hadn't done that, Hildy. Hildy Johnson: Done what? Walter Burns: Divorced me. Makes a fella lose all faith in himself. Gives him a... almost gives him a feeling he wasn't wanted. Hildy Johnson: Oh, now look, junior... that's what divorces are FOR!
A gem of a movie. Kate and Cary team up for this classic screwball comedy that couldn't be any better. The story involves a zany heiress (Kate), a paleontologist (Cary), a leopard named Baby, a dog named George, a million dollar research grant, and a missing bone to a brontosaurus skeleton. And it all climaxes with the cast being arrested. Hilarious and very entertaining. One of the best comedies ever made. And one of my personal favorites.
Susan: "Now, don't lose your temper".
David: "My dear young lady, I'm not losing my temper. I'm merely trying to play some golf!"
Susan:" You choose the funniest places; this is a parking lot".
Saw it opening night on IMAX and it was freakin' AWESOME! I will write a review shortly. But suffice to say Star Trek is the best movie I have seen in awhile. And the audience I saw it was cheering and screaming and laughing the entire movie.
Just saw it for a second time and it was even better hence the higher rating. Trek is one of my top 5 favorites now.
Alright here is my review of this new classic: Star Trek is the most fun I've had at the movies in a long time. This reboot of the classic series is a wonder to behold and it does not disappoint. And what's cool about this film is that is very accessible to non-Trek fans but at the same time will please Trekkies everywhere. This is the perfect summertime movie that delivers everything the previews promised and then some. Detailing the beginning journey for the intrepid crew of the starship Enterprise, this film explains a lot of history about the characters we have come to know and love for over 40 years, but with a few welcome tweaks. How James Kirk was born on his father's ship amid a raging space battle. And his rebellious upbringing against authority before enlisting in Starfleet. And Spock's childhood is explored as he is constantly harassed by fellow classmates for being half human. Flash forward a few years the duo will meet aboard the Enterprise, which is led by Captain Pike. Along the way we are introduced to the stunning Uhura (played by Zoe Zaldana), Sulu (John Cho) who uses a frigggin' collapsible samurai sword in a battle with some bad guys, Chekov, and the irascible Leonard McCoy (played by Karl Urban). We learned how McCoy gets the nickname Bones and how he despises his ex-wife. Urban kills the part. We don't meet Scotty (Simon Pegg) until halfway into the movie but when he comes aboard it is a very funny scene. As for the two leads Chris Pine is very good as Kirk, and he doesn't play him as William Shatner did. He makes Kirk cocky and horny but also very smart. Of course he is quick to fight too. And Pine just makes Kirk so likable that you can't help but root for the guy to win. But its Zachary Quinto who delivers the most as Spock. He brings a new level of intensity to the part that makes Spock seem dare I say it bad ass. As for the villian which I must regrettably say is the weak link in the movie. As the Romulan Nero, Eric Bana is somewhat wasted. Still this new update rocks with eye popping SFX, cool battle scenes, humor, drama, sexual innuendo, conflict, and a strong return by the original Spock, Mr. Nimoy thanks to a nifty time travel plot. There may be some die hard Treks fans that will take offense to some of the liberties taken by director J.J. Abrams, but I am not one of them. I think he did a helluva job and hope he comes back for the sequel. Trust me Star Trek is solid entertainment. I would not steer anybody wrong about this one. One of my favorite films now. And I don't think any other film coming out this summer or the year for that matter is gonna touch it. Oh, one more thing, when the Enterprise goes to warp speed..........it's sent shivers down my spine...like OH YEAH!!
The best of all the Star Wars films. There is no way it could have been any better. It tops A New Hope in every way and that's saying a lot because Hope was a great film. Empire is darker and more things are learned and more characters are introduced. I mean you've got Luke meeting Yoda and then going through training. The actual first appearance of bad ass bounty hunter Boba Fett. We learn how Han got the Falcon from Lando. And of course, Luke's first lightsaber fight with Vader. Freaking awesome.
Leia: "Let go".
Han: "Shh".
Leia: "Let go, please".
Han: "Don't get excited".
Leia: "Captain, being held by you isn't quite enough to get me excited".
Han: "Sorry sweetheart. I haven't got time for anything else".
Terrific sequel that is the perfect follow-up to Ridley Scott's 1979 original Alien. This time James Cameron (The Terminator) takes over and creates one of the best films ever made. Set 57 years after the events of the first film, sole survivor Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver's best performance ever) is picked up floating adrift in space in suspended animation. She is taken back to Earth and has to explain what happened to her crew-mates and the very expensive ship that she blew up. Of course no one believes her story of an alien that killed her mates and almost got her too. And the planet where they picked up the creature is now populated by engineers and their families. But suddenly when all communication is lost, a team of US Colonial Marines are dispatched to investigate. Ripley reluctantly goes along as an advisor. The setup is perfect and soon the marines are under full assault by a planet full of aliens. There is only one survivor there on the planet, a little girl named Newt, who quickly bonds with Ripley. The action scenes are impressive, some of the best you will ever see. With a strong cast alongside Weaver that includes Michael Biehn as Corporal Hicks, Bill Paxton as the hilarious Hudson, Lance Henriksen as the android Bishop, Paul Reiser as slimy company man Bishop, and of course Jenette Goldstein as Vasquez. Director James Cameron manages to top the original Alien with this well crafted story driven sci-fi action/horror film. One of my favorite films of all time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ripley: Did IQs just drop sharply while I was away?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ripley: These people are here to protect you. They're soldiers.
Newt: It won't make any difference
The first in the long running series of films about Nick and Nora Charles, a husband and wife detective team ably played by William Powell and Myrna Loy. The story kicks off when our duo is picked to investigate the disappearance of a scientist. Well, Nick is asked, Nora decides to tag along. It's all fun and games until Nick runs into some questionable relatives and colleagues who didn't get along with the missing man. Powell and Loy make the perfect team and the wisecracks fly pretty fast. Five more thin man films would follow this one and they all are very entertaining. But I think this one is the best one. Well the followup, After The Thin Man is pretty good too. Enjoy.
Lieutenant John Guild: You got a pistol permit? Nick Charles: No. Lieutenant John Guild: Ever heard of the Sullivan Act? Nora Charles: Oh, that's all right, we're married.
My favorite Hitchcock film of all time. It mixes comedy with suspense extremely well. Set in the Swiss Alps, a bunch of tourists meet at a village the night before boarding a train the next morning. A young girl named Iris (the excellent Margaret Lockwood) meets a young student named Gilbert (wonderful performance by Michael Redgrave). Of course they meet cute and can't stand each other. The next day on the train the lovable old Mrs. Froy (Dame May Whitty) vanishes and the chase is on to find her. You have to pay attention to the details in this one because things are not what they seem. An excellent film from Hollywood's golden past. One minute you're laughing, then you're on the edge of your seat. In my opinion, this is Hitch's best work. Just ahead of Psycho.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gilbert: Come on, sit down, take it easy. What's the trouble?
Iris Henderson: If you must know, something fell on my head.
Gilbert: When, infancy?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gilbert: Can I help?
Iris Henderson: Only by going away.
Gilbert: No, no, no, no. My father always taught me, never desert a lady in trouble. He even carried that as far as marrying Mother.
Superb film. Liz is smoking hot in this Tennessee William's adaptation. And she gives a great performance, to boot. Easily could have won an Oscar for it. Liz is Maggie the cat and she's married to Paul Newman, who have come home to celebrate his dad's birthday. He's called Big Daddy , wonderfully played by Burl Ives. When a southern family like this get together, all kinds of drama starts to unfold. This is the type of film where you just sit back and watch the fireworks go off, because it's an actors showcase. One of my favorite films of all time. Sitting right there in my top 10.
Great film with Bogart playing private eye Philip Marlowe. Hired by a rich lady (Bacall who is absolutely awesome) to look into matters involving her wild sister, Marlowe becomes embroiled in a complicated mystery. This flick has so many twists and turns you may lose track of what's going on but it's an entertaining ride. This is one of Bogie's best role and when teamed with Bacall, they make one hell of a team. One of my favorite films of all time. I will put it up against any of the blockbusters from today. Highly recommended.
Philip Marlowe: My, my, my! Such a lot of guns around town and so few brains! You know, you're the second guy I've met today that seems to think a gat in the hand means the world by the tail.
Best comic book movie ever. Terrific sequel that improves on the original in every way. In their second movie, the team must join forces with their rival Magneto to battle a covert anti-mutant operation that targets all mutants in the world. As a die hard comic book fan, X2 hits all the right notes from the opening scene at the White House to the thrilling assault on the X-mansion, where Wolverine cuts loose against some bad guys, to the super climax where Storm turns on the cold and Jean Grey lets loose with some major firepower. Oh yeah, this movie is awesome. The entire cast is rock solid including Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, and Famke Janssen. One of my all time favorites.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- William Drake: What exactly are you a professor *of*, "Professor Logan?" Wolverine: [Rogue, Bobby, and Pyro look at Logan, none of the kids knowing what to say] [pause] Wolverine: Art.
A simply amazing and surprising film. The twists and turns keep you guessing and the cast is terrific especially Emma Thompson and Robin Williams. Will remind you of the old Hitchcock thrillers that kept you on the edge of your seat. I love this movie. And Derek Jacobi makes a suitably creepy villian. A must see.
Mike Church: "I'm not looking for Ms. Right. I'm looking for Ms. Right Now".
Pacino. DeNiro. An excellent crime thriller that pits ace detective Vincent Hanna (Pacino) against master thief Neil McCauley (DeNiro) on the streets of LA. A terrific cast also includes Val Kilmer, Ashley Judd, Jon Voight, Dennis Haysbert, Natalie Portman, and Mykelti Williamson. The film is so absorbing and solid you won't even realize that it's almost 3 hours long. And the diner scene between Pacino and Deniro is awesome. One of the best scenes in film history. A true epic film. One of my favorite films of all time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vincent Hanna: You know, we are sitting here, you and I, like a couple of regular fellas. You do what you do, and I do what I gotta do. And now that we've been face to face, if I'm there and I gotta put you away, I won't like it. But I tell you, if it's between you and some poor bastard whose wife you're gonna turn into a widow, brother, you are going down.
Neil McCauley: There is a flip side to that coin. What if you do got me boxed in and I gotta put you down? Cause no matter what, you will not get in my way. We've been face to face, yeah. But I will not hesitate. Not for a second.
The definition of a dark comedy. When you mix humor with murderers and corpses, then throw in Cary Grant with two old bitties (his aunts) who happen to like killing single old men- then count me in. A truly different type comedy that has to be seen. Cary is of course in perfect form. Josephine Hull and Jean Adair as his aunts are quite funny. And lets not forget the long lost brother Raymond Massey who just escaped from prison and decides to come home. Plus Prisciilla Lane is fetching as Cary's girlfriend-soon to be wife.
Aunt Martha: "For a gallon of elderberry wine, I take one teaspoon full of arsenic, then add half a teaspoon of strychnine, and then just a pinch of cyanide."
Mortimer: "Hmm. Should have quite a kick".
My favorite western. It's one helluva of a movie. Kurt Russell is solid as Wyatt Earp but it's Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday who steals the show. And just look at the supporting cast: Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Michael Biehn, Powers Boothe, Dana Delaney, Billy Zane, Jason Priestly, Michael Rooker, and Billy Bob Thornton. Exciting shootouts and wonderful dialogue make this a winner. And has some of the best lines in movies, period.
Wyatt: "Go ahead, skin it! Skin that smokewagon and see what happens.."
Doc Holliday: "It's true, you're a good woman. Then again, you may be the antichrist".
Doc Holliday: "Why, Johnny Ringo, you look like someone just walked over your grave".
Easily the best one in the series. Truly a great film. Peter Jackson does an amazing job with the whole trilogy but I think Fellowship is the strongest one. The other two films kinda get carried away with the CG and battle scenes, but this one focuses on the characters and the storytelling is a lot more interesting. The cast is superb led by Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, and Sean Astin. This is the one that should have won best film, not Return of the King. A great film that resides in my top 5.
Totally entertaining movie. Harrison Ford is perfect as Indiana and Karen Allen has her best role as Marion. One of Spielberg's best films. Top notch all the way around.
Indiana:"You want to talk to God? Let's go see him together. I've got nothing better to do".
Awesome. One of my all time favorites now. A pure fun movie with action, laughs, a hard nosed hero, women that can kick ass, and some wild freaky bad guys. Nathan Fillion is the new Han Solo of this generation. And Summer Glau is awesome as River. Quirky and deadly. George Lucas, take note, this is how you make an enjoyable sci-fi adventure film. It puts the new Star Wars flicks to shame.
Mal: "I am to misbehave".
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Simon Tam: [about River] Oh, "one simple job! She'll be fine!"
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: She is fine! Except for being still crazy, she's a picture of health!
I actually was surprised that this movie was this good. It's one of my personal favorites. Just visited the exhibit they have at the Gerogia Aquarium and it makes you appreciate this movie even more. The central love story between Jack and Rose may be fictional but this is still a true story. Titanic did hit that iceberg and it did sank. I thought James Cameron did one hell of a job bringing this massive film to life. And when it's all said and done at the end of the day I will take this film over Dark Knight every time. Don't get me wrong, and fanboys keep those swords sheathed but what Titanic has over Dark Knight is that it is a true story. And it is equally impressive as all the heroics and dramatics of Dark Knight. And Leo and Kate are absolutely perfect.
One of the best action films ever made. The one that made Bruce Willis into a movie star. The one that introduced Alan Rickman to the world. And of course the one to start all those terrorists on a train, boat, plane, etc type movies. But this is the best one. Bruce is perfect as John McClane-the tough NY cop who battles terrorists one Christmas Eve in a hi rise in LA. Loaded with sensational action and plenty of one liners from Bruce. A must have in your DVD collection.
Supervisor: "Attention, whoever you are. This channel is reserved for emergency calls only.."
McClane: "No fucking shit, lady. Do I sound like I'm ordering a pizza?"
Takagi: "You want money? What kind of terrorists are you?"
Hans: "Who said we were terrorists?"
One word to describe this movie: AWESOME! I saw it Thursday night with some friends with a packed audience and this movie did not disappoint. Robert Downey Jr is perfect as Tony Stark, the wealthy industrialist who makes weapons for the US government. When he gets captured by some insurgents in a foreign land who force him to build a weapon of mass destruction, Tony resolves to start helping the world by taking down bad guys like these. This movie takes the essence of the comic book Iron Man and brings it to life wonderfully. Downey Jr never takes a wrong step in this role. No one else could have pulled it off. The supporting cast is also solid with Jeff Bridges as his rival Stane, Terrence Howard as his friend James Rhodes, and Gwyneth Paltrow as Tony's assistant Pepper Potts. Paltrow is terrific. This movie weaves incredible visual effects with a solid story that mixes drama, action, and humor effectively. I already claim Iron Man as the second best comic book movie, right behind X2. And I plan to see it again. Oh and stay for the scene after the end credits when Tony receives a special visitor. It was that scene and others throughout the movie like when he dons the red and gold armor that made all my fanboy dreams come true. A great way to start the summer movie season.
Christine Everheart: Tony Stark! Christine Everheart, Vanity Fair magazine
Tony Stark: Hi, yeah okay, go.
Christine Everheart: Mr. Stark, you've been called the Da Vinci of our time; what do you say to that?
Tony Stark: Absolutely ridiculous, I don't paint.
Christine Everheart: What do you say to your other nickname, the 'Merchant of Death'?
Tony Stark: That's not bad.
This is not hyperbole but The Bourne Ultimatum is the best movie I have seen this year. And I don't think anything else coming out later on this year will top it. It's definetly the best one in the series. In his third outing, Matt Damon returns as everyone's favorite amnesiac spy trying to figure out his past once and for all. Joan Allen returns as CIA executive Pam Landy as does Julia Stiles as CIA operative Nicky Parsons. They both try to help Bourne in his quest. Opposing him is David Strathairn as Noah Vosen who is running the operation to take down Bourne. He sends his most highly trained and lethal agents to kill Bourne which set up the most exciting action scenes in film history. And it's REAL, no CG or wires or crap like that. Good, old fashioned action like they used to make back in the day. Director Paul Greengrass pulls out all the stops for this one and it's awesome. Matt Damon is once again top notch as Bourne; he is one cool customer who only gets rattled when he thinks about his past. He is the perfect killing machine. And this is no exaggeration, but this film features the best one on one fight scene and the best car chase scene I have ever seen. This movie kicks ass. And for the finale, things get wrapped up very nicely. Oh, be prepared to be whisked from place to place. This film goes from England to Italy to Germany to New York all in the space of the 2 hour running time. Beautiful scenery, nice music score and great acting by the entire cast. Bourne is a winner. It's a close call to me giving it 5 stars and I may yet once I see it again.
Just saw Dark Knight for the second time, but on this viewing it was at an IMAX theatre. And it blew me away. It comes close to being a masterpiece. There a few little issues to talk about. But let me get to the good stuff first. Christian Bale returns as the masked hero and is solid once again. He is supported by one of the best casts in film history. Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman all return for their respective roles and are very good. Newcomers Maggie Gyllenhaal, Aaron Eckhart, and of course Heath Ledger join the mix wonderfully. The story has pyschopathic terrorist Joker (Ledger) leading a crimewave through Gotham City that Batman, Lt. Gordon (Oldman) and DA Harvey Dent (Eckhart) team up to contend with. Also they have to deal with the rival mob gangs who threaten to overrun the city. Simple enough story that takes a few twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. The action scenes are truly mind blowing, especially on IMAX. Everyone should see a movie on IMAX at least once. And you couldn't choose a better movie than Dark Knight. Ledger is simply amazing as The Joker. One of the best performances I've seen in awhile. He becomes the character so much that you really forget about him as an actor and focus on his portrayal of the Joker. The effects, music score, and look of this film are all amazing. It's truly an amazing piece of work. The only negatives would be Bale's voice as Batman. It's raspier and at times sounds comical. And I really thought Ledger could have had a few more scenes. Other than that I thought this film was one of the year's best. From the thrilling opening bank robbery scene to the final confrontation between Batman and Joker. And Dent's transformation from Gotham's white night into Two-Face. This is truly epic film-making. A must see.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Joker: Do I look like a guy with a plan?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Joker: You see, nobody panics when things go according to plan. Even if the plan is horrifying. If I told people that a gangbanger was going to get shot, or a busload of soldiers was going to get blown up, nobody would panic. Because it's all part of the plan. But tell people that one tiny little mayor is going to die and everyone loses their minds!
Spider-Man 3 has been out for two days now and I've seen it twice. It's a great movie. Most critics have trashed it, but they also trashed Pirates 2 last summer. And it turned out just fine. Me personally, I think this is the best of the Spider-man films. It's the perfect summertime movie, full of action, humor, drama, good characters and loads of top notch special effects. Director Sam Raimi is a genius. I don't know how he managed to keep a movie filled with 3 villians, introduce another supporting female character, and tie up loose ends from the very first Spider-man movie. But he does, and it's great. In this one Spidey has to battle Harry who dons his father garb of the Green Goblin; a new villian called the Sandman, and of course everyone's favorite bad guy-Venom. And Peter must deal with romantic troubles with his girlfriend Mary Jane and new girl Gwen Stacy. All the actors are in top form. Maguire owns Spder-man/Peter. I can't see no one else doing this role. Dunst is better in this one than the previous flicks as Mary Jane. James Franco goes from nice to evil in seconds as Harry. Thomas Haden Church is very good as Sandman. Bryce dallas Howard is fetching as Gwen and she holds her own against some of the veteran cast. And Topher Grace is perfectly slimy as Peter's rival at the Daily Bugle and later as Venom. The action is taken up a notch in this one-there are 6 major action sequences for this one, including a sensational opening sequence featuring Peter and Harry going at it above the streets of New York. The creation and effects of Sandman are truly eye-popping. And when Venom finally shows at the end for the climax, it's heaven. There are only a few movie series that every chapter is great. The original Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and maybe Lord of the rings. Spider-Man now joins that club. It's one hell of a movie and a perfect ending for the series.
When it was first announced Pierce would play Bond, I was like hell yeah. I've been a fan of his since the Remington Steele days. Well for his debut, Goldeneye rocks. It's my favorite Bond film of all time. It shouldn't be, but it is. Brosnan plays Bond just right-a few quips, smooth with the ladies, and rough with the bad guys. He would only get better through the years. And he has a great supporting cast. Judi Dench rules as the new M. Sean Bean and Famke Janssen make worthy villians. And Q pops up to give 007 a hard time. Goldeneye is great from the opening bungee jump off the dam to the tank chase scene through the streets of St. Petersberg, Russia. A must see and must own.
Top notch serial killer movie that I like even more than SIlence of the Lambs. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt are two detectives on the trail of a vicious killer named John Doe, who is using the seven deadly sins to dispatch his victims. Kevin Spacey is supremely creepy as John Doe and makes an effective foil for our dynamic duo. Freeman is top notch as the veteran detective who is burnt out by all the violence in the world. Pitt is gung ho as his eager new partner. Gwyneth Paltrow is effective as Pitt's wife. And R. Lee Emery is great as the duo's captain. A great film that I have seen several times.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David Mills: You're no messiah. You're a movie of the week. You're a fucking t-shirt, at best
Howard: "This day has been rather disappointing, I don't mind telling you".
Jack: ""why, because you didn't kill everybody?"
Howard: "There will come a time, boy, when you will wish you never met me".
Jack: "Mister, I'm already there!"
Marilyn's best role and best film has the gorgeous one playing a young woman living in the upstairs apartment of a married man. The man is prone to daydreaming about being a real ladies man but when he finally meets Marilyn, comedic results happen quickly and often. A hilarious film that shot Monroe to stardom. You can't go wrong with this one.
The Girl: When it gets hot like this, you know what I do. I keep my undies in the icebox!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Girl: I think it's just elegant to have an imagination. I just have no imagination at all. I have lots of other things, but I have no imagination.
My second favorite western, right behind Tombstone. A slam bang film which has John Wayne as Sheriff John T. Chance who has a murderer locked up in the jail and must withstand repeated attempts to free the bad guy. It's a whole posse of hired thugs and all Chance has is an old crippled deputy and another deputy Dude (played by Dean Martin) trying to stay sober. Chance eventually gets more help in the form of bad girl turned good (Angie Dickinson) and a young hotshot named Colorado (Ricky Nelson) who is quick with his mouth and his gun. This is how you make a great western. Terrific heroes, evil bad guys, rousing action, and frequent humor. All involved give solid performances especially Martin, Nelson, and Dickinson. Of course, The Duke is awesome as usual.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pat Wheeler: I told him you were one of the best.
Colorado Ryan: Well, I'll tell you what I'm a lot better at, Mr. Wheeler... that's minding my own business.
Very good romantic comedy with a stellar cast. Out of all the romantic comedies set in England including Notting Hill and Four Weddings and A funeral, I prefer Love Actually out of all of them. Splendid cast with Hugh Grant as the prime Minister, who gets to tell off the President of the US (Billy Bob Thornton) in a scene that will have you saying Hell yeah. Also strong performances by Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson, and Bill Nighy. Love Actually is a pleasant surprise.
This is where it started. I mean Kevin Costner's version was a good entertaining film, but for me, Errol Flynn is the Robin Hood. No question about it. One of the best looking and best sounding movies you will ever see. Lots of action and witty dialogue plus great villians in Basil Rathbone as Sir Guy and Claude Rains as Prince John. Plus Olivia deHavilland is terrific as Maid Marian. A winner any way you look at it.
We Are Marshall is one terrific movie. It recounts the tragic events of a plane crash that killed most of the players and coaching staff of the 1970 Huntington, West Virginia college football team. The movie shows the aftermath of that crash and the effect it has on the whole town. A truly emotional film anchored by Matthew McConaughey as the new head coach hired to try and rebuild this team. It's one of his best performances in a while. Also solid support from Matthew Fox as his assistant coach and David Strathairn as the president of the school. Side note- my fiancee is from West Virgina and she grew up like 30 miles from Huntington, so we've actually been to this town and it's kinda surreal to see it for real and know that this really happened. We Are Marshall is not just a great sports movie but it's a great movie period.
Pure comedy gold. Grant and Dunne team up again for this hilarious comedy about a man who remarries after his wife is reported missing at sea. Everything is fine until the first wife is found by the coast guard and turns her husband's life into a wreck. Cary is in usual good form, but it's Irene Dunne who makes the picture. She is delightful as the former wife who comes back. Great comedy.
Nick: "The moment I saw you I knew.."
Eve: "I bet you say that to all your wives".
Hilarious action comedy that pairs Robert DeNiro with Charles Grodin. An odd couple that turns out to make a fantastic team. There are chases, shootouts, showdowns with the mob, and loads of funny scenes involving this duo. And Dennis Farina is great as mob boss Jimmy Cerano.
Jonathan: "I got money, y'know".
Jack: "I'm sure you do".
Jonathan: "I'll give you whatever you want".
Jack: "Start by shutting up. I know you all of two minutes and already I don't like you".
Jonathan: "That's too bad. I really like you".
In your face full throttle action flick. And what's great is, it's done with actual cars and people not none of the CG crap that is everywhere in today's movies. Mel Gibson returns as laconic ex-lawman Max who helps a small colony of surviors battle mohawked savages in the Australian outback. All for the last precious commodity in the world- fuel. Super charged action with thrilling car chases and unbelivable stunts that will leave you gasping. Definetly a must see and must have.
Max: "Two days ago, I saw a vehicle that would haul that tanker. You want to get out of here? You talk to me."
Actually one of the rare sequels that tops the original. Bigger action, loads of humor, great villians, and the chemistry between Mel and Danny is solid. The boys take on dirty South African diplomats that is on from the opening chase scene. And by bringing in Joe Pesci, LW2 ups the humor quotient. One of the best sequels and best action flicks ever made.
Murtaugh: "I'm going die on a toilet, aren't I?"
Riggs: "Guys like you don't die on toilets".
This is an impressive movie to say the least. Will Smith is a scientist/soldier in New York City who is the last known survivor after a man made virus wipes out everyone else. The virus designed to cure cancer actually turns it victims into daylight fearing raging zombies. It's up to Will to try to find a virus. I just saw this film on opening day and it was jam packed. The opening scene gets the ball rolling when the announcement is made about the cure. Flash forward three years later and New York is one big deserted island with Will cruising the streets in any vehicle he chooses. Scavenging for food and supplies during the day and holed up in his fotress of a building at night when the creatures come out looking for blood. Will's only companion at first is his loyal german shepherd named Samantha. They make quite the team. You begin to really care what happens to them. Later on two more immune survivors pop up- a young woman and a small boy. This movie is amazing. The desolation scenes of the city have to be seen to be believed. The action sequences are equally impressive. The only drawback may be the creatures themselves. A little too CG at times but still creepy as hell. I have to say Mr. Smith gives one helluva perfomance here. It will remind you of what Tom Hanks did in Cast Away. Will is dramatic, frightened, humorous, and sometimes a little crazy. One of the best films of the year. Plus they showed the kick ass new Batman trailer right before the movie. It's win win all the way around. Oh, one more thing some people may argue it's not long enough. Let me tell you something, you couldn't ask for a better length in a movie. Any longer and you may start to get restless. One hour and 40 minutes is perfect to me.
One of my favorite films. Steve Martin is the title character and he's very funny, in a laid back kinda way. He goes through a crisis when his daughter (Kimberly Williams in a sensational film debut) annouces she is engaged. Much to his dismay. So he has to meet the in-laws, plan a wedding, please his wife (Diane Keaton) and deal with a wacky wedding planner (Martin Short). All in all, a good time will be had by everyone. And is it just me or does Diane Keaton look stunning?
Annie: "What is this, 1958? Give the little wife a blender?"
Matt Damon is kick ass in this exciting action thriller. He plays Jason Bourne, a man found at sea, left for dead, with amnesia. He doesn't remember his past of being a spy, but when he starts to piece his life back together and starts to use his deadly skills, watch out. This is a super action thriller that mixes old school stuntwork and chases with a new world attitude. Matt Damon is totally convincing as the super spy. And Frank Potente is engaging as Marie, a woman who reluctantly tags along and helps Jason figure out what's going on. Top notch stuff.
Jason Bourne: I don't want to do this anymore.
Conklin: I don't think that's a decision you can make.
Jason Bourne: Jason Bourne is dead, you hear me? He drowned two weeks ago. You're gonna go tell 'em that Jason Bourne is dead, you understand?
Conklin: Where are you gonna go?
Jason Bourne: I swear to God, if I even feel somebody behind me, there is no measure to how fast and how hard I will bring this fight to your doorstep. I'm on my own side now.
This is how it's done. A great looking epic film with a riveting storyline, solid acting and lots of bloody action. There is no doubt Leo is definetly THE actor of this generation. He plays a conflicted smuggler who is trying to get out of Africa, and he is perfect. And Djimon is also solid as the father who tries to find his family. The action scenes are quite graphic and intense but never excessive. One of the best films of the year.
A most excellent film. Keanu Reeves is perfect as an ex college football quarterback turned FBI agent on the trail of surfers who rob banks. I know that sounds wild but this movie rocks. As Agent Johnny Utah, Reeves has one of his best roles ever. And he's backed up solidly by veteran agent Angelo Pappas, played by Gary Busey. And Patrick Swayze is ok as Bodhi, the leader of the bank robbing outfit who call themselves The Ex- Presidents.
Johnny Utah: " I caught my first tube today...sir."
Still Guy Ritchie's best film. Set in London, 4 guys pool their money together to gain entrance to a high stakes game to with 100,000 grand. Well when the one who plays in the game gets hustled by Harry the Hatchet and now owes half a million pounds in 7 days or all the guys will start losing appendages. So now the boys are desperate to score some cash and end up learning of a robbery of some local drug dealers and decide to rob the robbers. Throw in a cast of wild characters including Harry's own personal collector Big Chris (played by Vinnie Jones), bar owner Sting (who plays one of the guys father), a young Jason Statham, and assorted thieves, gangsters, and dope heads, and you have one of the wildest movies ever made. My favorite characters are drug dealer Rory Breaker, Big Chris, Soap, and Tom. It's one of my favorites. Loaded with tons of cool quotes and followed up by the equally great Snatch. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rory Breaker: If the milk turns out to be sour, I ain't the kinda pussy to drink it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Soap: A minute ago this was the safest job in the world. Now it's turning into a bad day in Bosnia. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bacon: What's that? Samoan Joe's Barman: It's a cocktail. You asked for a cocktail. Bacon: No. I asked you to give me a refreshing drink. I wasn't expecting a fucking rainforest! You could fall in love with an orangutan in that! Samoan Joe's Barman: You want a pint, you go to the pub. Bacon: I thought this was a pub! Samoan Joes Barman: It's a Samoan pub.
My personal favorite film from 2003. It came out the same time as the last Lord of the Rings- The Return of the King. And I actually found Samurai to be the better film. With a solid performance by Mr. Cruise, an excellent story, and terrific action scenes The Last Samurai delivers. Ranks right up there with Braveheart and Gladiator.
MI3 rocks. I know the whole world may be against Tom Cruise but this was one of the best movies of the summer. Hoffman makes a very convincing bad guy and the action scenes are very well done.Totally entertaining.
Nothing to worry about. Casino Royale is a damn good movie. Old school, low tech, in your face action, brutal fistfights, stunning women, and a solid performance by Mr. Craig. Welcome back James.
A most glorious movie. I enjoyed this from beginning to end. The crowd I saw it with opening night was all into it. It's a familiar story but it's never been done like this. The story of how 300 Spartans stood against 1 million Persians who invaded their country. Gerard Butler is Spartan King Leonidas, who delivers a truly commanding performance. It will remind you of Russell Crowe from Gladiator. Lena Headey is his wife, Queen Gorgo, who is equally impressive. She has become one of my favorite actresses now. 300 rocks with some of the best battle scenes ever captured on film. It rivals any of the battle scenes from the Lord of the Rings movies. The narration by David Wenham is a nice touch also. Everyone should make the trip to see it at the cinema because you need to see how impressive this movie looks and sounds. The style is simliar to what Sin City did a few years ago. I can't wait to see 300 again.
King Leonidas: "Spartans! Enjoy your breakfast, for tonight we dine in hell!"
Hadn't watched this movie in years until a few days ago. It's still great. The cast, the rocking songs, and the humor make it impossible not to love. And Andrew Strong as lead singer Deco is just terrific. Movies don't get much better than this.
True Romance is one hell of a movie. I personally believe it's the best Quentin Tarantino movie ever and he didn't even direct it...that honor goes to Tony Scott. But anyway when Clarence (Christian Slater) a comic book store clerk meets Alabama (Patricia Arquette) they fall in love. But she being a call girl, she brings some baggage along. Namely her pimp Drexel (an exotic looking Gary Oldman). Well a confrontation between Clarence and Drexel turns ugly and soon the lovers are on the run with Drexel's associates in hot pursuit over some stolen drugs. The lovers leave Detroit and head to LA to try and unload the drugs and score some money. Easier said than done..soon hitmen and the LAPD get involved leading to a glorious shoot-out in a ritzy hotel with maximum carnage. This film has one of the most impressive casts you will ever see. In addition to Slater and Arquette, you also have Dennis Hopper as Clarence's dad; Christopher Walker as the main bad guy in pursuit of his employer's drugs; Brad Pitt as a dope head room-mate; Samuel L. Jackson as a drug dealer; James Gandolfini as a brutal hitman; Tom Sizemore and Chris Penn as LAPD and Bronson Pinchot as a Hollywood executive. Plus a cameo by Val Kilmer as Elvis Presley, who is part of Clarence's consciousness. Great movie with a great music theme that plays through out the entire film. A must see. Be warned it's very violent and very profane. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Virgil: Now the first time you kill somebody, that's the hardest. I don't give a shit if you're fuckin' Wyatt Earp or Jack the Ripper. Remember that guy in Texas? The guy up in that fuckin' tower that killed all them people? I'll bet you green money that first little black dot he took a bead on, that was the bitch of the bunch. First one is tough, no fuckin' foolin'. The second one... the second one ain't no fuckin' Mardis Gras either, but it's better than the first one 'cause you still feel the same thing, y'know... except it's more diluted, y'know it's... it's better. I threw up on the first one, you believe that? Then the third one... the third one is easy, you level right off. It's no problem. Now... shit... now I do it just to watch their fuckin' expression change. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Very cool sci-fi/horror flick set in Antarctica. At an American research base of only 12 men, an alien life form is discovered and all hell breaks loose. This alien has the unique ability to imitate any other life form it comes in contact with - including humans. Kurt Russell plays RJ MacReady, the pilot who tries to figure out how to kill this thing before everyone is taken over. Directed by ace horror master John Carpenter with terrific gore effects, a suspenseful music score, and a twinge of mystery. Done before the heyday of CG, this 1982 film holds up remarkably well. A treat for horror/sci-fi fans.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Childs: You're gonna have to sleep sometime, MacReady.
MacReady: I'm a real light sleeper, Childs.
Roger Moore's best Bond movie. He drops some of the witty replies and plays it tough in this one. He is on the hunt for an encryption device before it falls into enemy hands. He must also contend with a beautiful woman out to avenge her parent's murder and the affections of a young impressionable ice skater. Not to mention all the assasins and enemy agents who are on his trail. Loaded with sensational stunts and exciting action scenes. This is clearly Moore's best work in the series and one of the better Bond films to boot. Top notch song by Sheena Easton too.
Bond: "That's detente, comrade. You don't have it, I don't have it".
Will somebody please give Leo an Oscar. I don't know what more he can do. He is great as Howard Hughes. And for that matter Martin Scorsese does a brilliant job directing-Oscar please. This film recaptures the golden age of Hollywood filmmaking perfectly. And the cast is perfect. Starting with Leo who is amazing as the eccentric Hughes. Cate Blanchett is perfect as Katherine Hepburn. And the supporting cast is a dream cast: Kate Beckinsale, Alec Baldwin, John C. Reilly, Ian Holm, and Alan Alda. One of the best films of the 21st century.
Kate:"What's that on the steering wheel?" Howard:"Cellophane. If you had any idea of the crap that people carry around on their hands".
Kate:"What kind of crap?"
Howard:"You don't wanna know".
One of the best action comedies ever made. It's all Eddie Murphy from the get go. Brazen, cocky, and funny , he deilvers as Detroit detective Axel Foley off to Beverly Hills to solve his friend's murder. There is actually more comedy than action in this movie, but you won't mind. You get to see Murphy when he was young and on the cusp of becoming a major star. Still holds up pretty good too.
Axel: "Gimme the keys! I'm gonna follow them!"
Jenny: "Have you ever driven a Mercedes before?"
Axel: "No, but a car is a car! I drive my car every day!"
Jenny: "I'm driving. I've seen your car."
Axel: "Oh shit, that's cold."
Excellent horror comedy that hits the mark. Shaun and his best pal Ed are room-mates in England and are just coasting through life. Shaun has a girlfriend named Liz who wants more from him. Then one day people start turning into zombies and Shaun becomes the reluctant leader. The laughs are plenty as are the thrills. It can get very gory but still fun. I laughed my ass off and it's one of my favorites now. Highly recommened.
Shaun: I don't think I've got it in me to shoot my mum, roommate, and girlfriend all in one day...
Excellent action comedy from the creators of Shaun of the Dead. Simon Pegg is a riot as Nicholas Angel, the most decorated cop in London who is transferred to a sleepy little village called Sandford. All seems quiet until a rash of murders happens and Angel goes all out to find out what's going on. A well paced film that mixes action with humor very well. Nick Frost who also played in Shaun with Pegg is on hand for this one too. Timonthy Dalton plays a slimy bad guy. This movie is great and the last 30 minutes are about the best 30 minutes you will ever see on film. And features some of the most memorable quotes in film you will ever hear. Don't miss this one. Highly recommended. Oh, one side-note, it does have several gory scenes that will catch you off guard. Good stuff. Highly recommended.
Nicholas: "You're a doctor, deal with it!" Danny: "Yeah, motherfucker!"
A pretty good romantic comedy set in Seattle with lots of good actors. You've got Bridget Fonda (who pretty much owns the movie every time she appears), Matt Dillion, Kyra Sedwick, Campbell Scott, Bill Pullman, Eric Stoltz and Jeremy Piven. A great rocking soundtrack plus hilarious situations involving the dating scene in the 90's equals an enjoyable movie. Directed by Cameron Crowe so you know it's going to be good.
Cliff: "Look, Janet you know I see other people still. You do know that don't you?"
One of Hitch's best films he ever made. Anthony Perkins is perfect as Norman Bates, a young man who runs The Bates Motel, who has a serious mother fixation. Along comes Janet Leigh, a young woman on the run from the cops for stealing money from her job. And the rest is cinema magic. Psycho set the standard for all the slasher flicks that would follow, but it's still the best one. It works as a thriller and a character piece. You really get to know Norman Bates and Perkins does a helluva job. Janet Leigh is pretty good too. A must see.
Classic Marilyn
Lorelei Lee: "Don't you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You wouldn't marry a girl just because she's pretty, but my goodness, doesn't it help?"
An updated version of the King Arthur legend that is very satisfying and really bloody. Following in the footsteps of Braveheart and Gladiator, this film ups the action quotient with some truly awesome battle scenes. The cast is superb led by the always dependable Clive Owen as Arthur. Stellan Skarsgard is great as the leader of the Saxons who invade England. And Keira Knightley is wild as Guinevere who is very handy with a bow and arrow. Definetly a must see.
Arthur: "And it will be good of you to mark my face, Saxon, for the next time you see it, it will be the last thing you see on this earth".
Cerdic: "Ahhh, finally, a man worth killing".
The one that brought a new kind of comic book hero to the screen. Wesley Snipes is awesome as Blade, a vampire hunter who is half vampire himself, wiping out each and every vampire he comes across. His main adversary is Deacon Frost, played by Stephen Dorff, who also happened to be the vampire that killed his mom while she was pregnant with Blade. So it's payback time. Lots of blood and gore and gunfire and hand to hand combat make this an extremely entertaining movie. Look for the awesome opening scene at a vampire rave club where Blade just goes ballistic.
Blade: "There are worse things out tonight than vampires".
Karen: "Like what?"
Blade: "Like me."
I thought it was a pretty good film. It won't be to everyone's tastes though. Part women bonding film, part horror film. The second half of the film is more action packed and bloodier but the first half is just as good setting the mood of the film perfectly. Plus it has a little humor. Two of the women stand out from the rest: Natalie Mendoza and Shauna MacDonald. A must see for anyone looking for some thrills mixed with a good storyline.
Kurt Russell is all swagger as trucker Jack Burton in this very entertaining action/comedy that has a little bit of everything: kung fu, magic, tough talking good guys, nasty bad guys, cool fights, people flying around, and some of the best quotes of any movie in history. As Jack would say this is going to take crackerjack timing.
A very different but still cool movie. Denzel is once again at his best as the ATF agent trying to solve this mystery involving a bombing, a creepy pyschopath, and a beautiful young woman. Top notch entertainment all around. With great supporting turns from Jim Caviezel as the unhinged bomber and newcomer Paula Patton is a breath of fresh air. Plus you got Val Kilmer.
Just watched this film because it was finally released on DVD. 20 years later and one of my childhood favorites from the 80's is still awesome. A group of small kids in a small town dub themselves The Monster Squad and must take on very real monsters including Dracula, The Wolfman, and the Mummy. Lucky for them Frankenstein's Monster is on their side. Loaded with great makeup effects and lots of humor and an action-packed last half hour, Monster Squad is a winner.
Bruce Willis returns as New York detective John McClane after a 12 year absence. And he was sorely missed. In his fourth outing, a former disgruntled government operative shuts down America through the computer network causing all kinds of panic and hysteria. traffic, power, airports..basically anything that is run by computer is taken out. McClane is called in to escort a potential witness (a known computer hacker) to Washington, DC, who could have some knowledge about the current situation. Ten minutes into the movie, all hell breaks loose as the bad guys try to kill the young hacker. And once again, McClane finds himself in an all too familiar situation. Not only does he have to deal with terrorists but also a defiant daughter (Mary E Winstead) who later becomes a kidnap victim. This movie kicks ass. The action is decidely old school with some super crazy stunt work with a small amount of CG. It moves at a pretty good clip and features a jaw dropping scene involving a semi truck, a fighter jet, and a collapsing bridge. Bruce is once again in top form as McClane- a little older and wiser but still dispensing with the wisecracks and still deadly with a firearm. Justin Long is a riot as the hacker who becomes McClane's only ally. Timonthy Olyphant is pretty good as the villian. Mary E Winstead as McClane's daughter is just like her old man- with a smart mouth and can get tough when she needs to. And Maggie Q is awesome as Olyphant's sidekick/girlfriend. She has a memorable face off with McClane that will have you cheering hell yeah. This Die Hard film rocks. You will definetly enjoy this one. One of the best films I have ever seen.
John McClane: Mai? Asian chick, likes to kick people? Yeah, last time I saw her she was at the bottom of an elevator shaft with an SUV up her ass.
One of the best of the Trek films to come along. Picard and his crew must battle the Borg as they try to prevent the hostile race from changing Earth's history. The Next Generation finally gets a bigger budget and it shows on the big screen. Dazzling visual effects, a sleek new Enterprise, and spiffy new uniforms make for an entertaining film. And the acting is super from Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard who seems at times like Ahab chasing Moby Dick; Brent Spiner as the android Data who continues to question his humanity; Alice Krige as the Borg Queen; Alfre Woodard as Lily, a woman who befriends Picard back in the past; and James Cromwell as Dr. Zefram Cochrane, creator of warp drive. Excellent.
One day in a New York City police precinct where all kinds of people intersect. Kirk Douglas is the tough detective who is dealing with a case involving an abortionist. It also has a shoplifter, two dangerous burglars, and an embezzler. A taut in your face crime drama that features a strong performance by Mr. Douglas and another good one by Eleanor Parker who plays his wife. One of the best of the detective movies from the 1950's.
Detective McLeod: "Take a couple of drop dead pills".
Hilarious movie from the maker of Old School and Road Trip. The story is simple enough: two days before his wedding Doug and his three friends head for Las Vegas for a blow-out bachelor party. It's so awesome, they don't remember a thing next morning. Like Doug is missing; there is a tiger in the bathroom; a baby in the closet, a missing tooth, and more. The antics of the three guys as they try to re trace their steps and find out what happened the night before and oh find Doug so he can get married. It's been awhile since I laughed this hard during a movie. The situations these guys get into are non stop. They all are equally funny starting with Bradley Cooper, who I have never really liked in anything before this. He was obnoxious as hell as the fiance in Wedding Crashers. But here he is equally cool and funny as Phil, the married one. It's a perfect role for him and he nails it. Ed Helms is also very good as Stu, the one who loses his tooth and ends up marrying a stripper played by Heather Graham. And then there is Zach Galifianakis as Alan, the bearded one who is so weird it's funny when he just stares and doesn't say anything. About the only one who doesn't get to cut loose is Doug, the groom played by Justin Bartha. Maybe for the sequel he will get to do more. The Hangover is a surprise comedy that never gets too raunchy except for the end credits which kinda get a little graphic. But all in all, this movie is hilarious from start to finish. Plus it has a cameo by Mike Tyson who is actually tolerable for once. One of the surprises of the year. -------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phil Wenneck: Tracy, it's Phil. Tracy Garner: Phil, where the hell are you guys? Phil Wenneck: Listen, we fucked up. We lost Doug. Tracy Garner: What? We're getting married in *five hours*. Phil Wenneck: Yeah... that's not gonna happen.
Alan Garner: Gambling? Who said anything about gambling? It's not gambling when you know you're gonna win. Counting cards is a foolproof system. Stu Price: It's also illegal. Alan Garner: It's not illegal, it's frowned upon, like... masturbating on an airplane. Phil Wenneck: I'm pretty sure that's illegal too. Alan Garner: Yeah, maybe after 9/11, where everybody got so sensitive. Thanks a lot, Bin Laden!
Before director Sam Raimi starting making Spider-Man movies, he was responsible for one of the coolest and most inventive film series ever..The Evil Dead trilogy. The first film was a pure horror fest with a little humor thrown into and the sequel delivered even more off the wall humor. But for the third flick Raimi went all out to make this totally awesome comedy/horror. Our returning hero Ash (played by the super Bruce Campbell) finds himself thanks to a time warp, in the Middle Ages and must now battle the army of the dead for possession of the Book of the Dead. Said book holds the information on returning our hero back home. So he leads the local folk into battle against the dead for one rip roaring super cool face off. It's all in good fun and you really wish Raimi and Campbell would make a 4th movie to show what Ash has been up to the last 16 years. Not for everyone's taste though, but if you wanna see something different, then this is the movie to see. Oh there's a quick cameo by Bridget Fonda at the beginning. And plenty of one-liners galore from my man Ash. Good stuff. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I love this movie. A funny film about recent high school grad Scottie being dumped by his girl friend Fiona right after graduation. Of course Scottie takes the break up hard, especially when the whole school finds out about at the after graduation party when the lead singer of a rock band (played by a punk looking Matt Damon) who Fiona hooked up with, sings the catchy song Scottie Doesn't Know. Priceless. Anyway, Scottie has a German pen pal who he thinks is a guy but is actually a girl named Mika, who he tells off in a drunken rage in an email. So once Scottie finds out the deal he and his best bud Cooper head over to Europe to find his true love.Along the way the duo run into their high school buddies, the twins (Jenny and Jamie), get shanghaied by some Manchester United supporters, stumble into Vandersexx, a sex club all about domination and kinky stuff, make shambles of the Pope's clothes, hit an all male nude beach (don't ask) and more funny situations. This movie had me laughing from the word go. One of my favorites. Cameos include besides Matt Damon...there is Lucy Lawless as the owner of the sex club; Vinnie Jones as the leader of Manchester United; Jeffrey Tambor as Scottie's clueless dad; and the whole cast is just great. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cooper: You know America was founded by prudes. Prudes who left Europe because they hated all the kinky, steamy European sex that was going on. And now I, Cooper Harris, will return to the land of my perverted forefathers and claim my birthright.
Scott: I saw a gay porno once. I didn't know until halfway in. The girls never came. The girls never came!
Cool 80's sci-fi/action flick about a mysterious FBI Agent (Kyle MacLachlan) arriving in LA to track down a serial killer with the help of veteran LA detective Tom Beck (Michael Nouri). But it seems the killer is not who he seems and once the fed lets Beck in on the secret..that they are actually hunting an alien who is jumping from body to body, the fun really begins. For an 80's flick, The Hidden holds up remarkably well. MacLachlan and Nouri make an effective odd couple duo and the action scenes are extremely exciting. A bonus is Claudia Christian as a stripper who is one of the bodies the alien uses for a little bit. She is a sight to behold, looking gorgeous but also deadly as she packs an automatic machine gun with grenade launcher. Car chases, shoot outs, and a little humor make The Hidden a winner. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Doctor: Detective Beck. No one deserves to die like that. I don't care what the man's done. Cliff Willis: He killed twelve people, wounded twenty three more, stole six cars, most of them Ferraris. Robbed eight banks, six supermarkets, four jewelery stores and a candy shop. Six of the ones he killed he carved up with a butcher knife. Two of them were kids. He did all that in two weeks. If anyone deserves to go that way, it sure in the hell was him.
Exciting thriller set in LA, about a train station policeman named Lt. Willie Calhoun (super performance by William Holden) chasing down a ruthless kidnapper. The bad guy has taken the blind daughter of a millionaire and holds her for ransom. The kidnapping is seen by the rich man's secretary (a solid Nancy Olson). Calhoun swears that he will find the girl and put the kidnapper down, and everyone believes him because Calhoun is one hell of a cop. A very short film at about 80 minutes long, but it is packed with riveting drama and some terrific action. Holden is top notch as the policeman, this being one of his best performances ever. And Lyle Bettger is memorable as bad guy Joe Beacon, the kind you love to hate. Union Station is one of those little films that not too many people have heard about, much less seen, but it is one terrific movie. One of my personal favorites. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marge Wrighter: Gonna send that kid home, aren't you, Joe? I mean after we collect. Joe Beacom: She'll go home...they ever fish her out of the river. Let's have the coffee, huh?
I laughed my ass off at this movie. Mainly Robert Downey Jr steals the show. He is hilarious from the word go. Ben Stiller is not that good acting wise. But he does a great job directing, mixing comedy and action quite well. Jack Black is ok, he gets in a few good lines. The supporting cast though is solid from Brandon T. Jackson's Alpa Chino to Nick Nolte's gruff ex-vet to the hilarious Danny McBride's explosion expert Cody. If you get easily offended, this might not be your type of movie. But the laughs come very fast and frequently. And the action is top notch. And the buzzed about cameo by Mr. Tom Cruise is hilarious. You will see Tom like never before. But back to Robert Downey. He kills in this movie. I can't praise him enough. Coupled with Iron Man, this was truly RDJ's year.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kirk Lazarus: I'm a lead farmer, motherfucker!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cody: I don't know what it's called; I only know the sound it makes when it *lies*!
---------------------------------------
Kirk Lazarus: Spit that shit out man!
---------------------------------------
Cody: They're setting off fireworks like a mother-fucker down there!
Hilarious comedy about real estate agent Peter(Paul Rudd) proposing to his girlfriend Zooey (Rashida Jones) and then realizing he has no male friends to be his best man. So Peter goes through a series of man dates set up by his mom and brother but to no avail. Along comes Sydney Fife (Jason Segel) who doesn't actually appear until about 30 minutes into the movie, but once he does Segel gives the movie a nice kick and the laughs become more frequent and hilarious. I really loved this movie. A kind of laid back story with several engaging characters and wonderful performances. The three leads are all great and work well together Paul Rudd is likable and goofy; Jason Segel comes across as aloof but actually makes a lot of sense and Rashida Jones is a revelation as she makes Zooey smart and sexy. The supporting cast is also super including Jamie Pressly and Jon Favreau as a bickering married couple; JK Simmons as Peter's dad; Andy Samberg as Peter's brother; Sarah Burns as Zooey's best friend Hailey and a dry but funny cameo by The Incredible Hulk himself, Lou Ferringo. I love You, Man is a sweet sometimes raunchy, but enjoyable comedy. For couples, singles, men or women. Everyone will enjoy this one. Also RUSH appears for a brief scene and they rock! AWESOME! I'm slapping da bass man. You have to see the movie to get that quote. I'll just say Paul Rudd had me laughing when he says it like 20 times. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Denise: Oh my God, Hailey, why must everything always be about you? Hailey: Because I'm single.
Excellent film with Sidney Poitier in an Oscar winning performance as Homer Smith, an ex-GI now traveling contractor. Homer is making his way through a small town in Arizona when his car overheats. He pulls into a place and encounters a group of East German Catholic nuns led by the strict Mother Superior Maria (Lilia Skala). All Homer wants is some water for his radiator but he ends up staying at the request of Mother Maria to help out around the place. And when Mother Maria asks him to build a chapel cause she thinks God has sent him for that task, Homer reluctantly agrees. Lilies of the Field is a wonderful film mixing drama with some humor and a great performance by Mr. Poitier. I used to think Sidney's best acting work was in Guess Who's Coming To Dinner. I stand corrected, Lilies is by far his best work and he deservedly was named Best Actor for 1963. He makes Homer such an engaging character that most people can identify with. And all the actresses portraying the nuns give worthy performances also. Lilies is a small but immensely enjoyable film. One of the best scenes in the film is when Homer teaches the nuns how to sing an old time church hymn called Amen. It's heavenly, rousing, and funny all at once. A great music score by Jerry Goldsmith is a plus also. Add this Poitier's list of films that he made in the 1960's and you have one of the best stretches of film acting ever delivered. His other films during this period include A Raisin in the Sun (1961); The Bedford Incident (1965); To Sir, With Love (1967); Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967); and In The Heat Of The Night (1967). All equally impressive films during a six year span. And Lilies is right up there with them. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mother Maria: [the morning after a fiesta] Well, you are awake? Homer Smith: Yeah, I guess so. Mother Maria: Good. [throws a cup of cold water in his face] Homer Smith: Why'd you go and do that? Mother Maria: The women last night, they say that is the only thing when a man has been mixing wine with tequila! [walks away] Homer Smith: I'm gonna mix you with tequila!
Hilarious comedy and Sandra Bullock's best film in years. She plays a high maintenance book editor who is on the verge of being deported back to her homeland of Canada. So she quickly forces her assistant Andrew (played by Ryan Reynolds) to marry her. Well when an immigration officer finds out, he wants to make sure this is for real, so the duo ends up going to Andrew's home in Alaska to prepare for their wedding. Of course his family is in shock and all kinds of hilarity ensues. It reminded me of those old Cary Grant films from the 40's with a dash of more sex talk. Bullock and Reynolds make a great team and have wonderful chemistry together. A solid supporting cast which includes Mary Steenburgen, Malin Akerman, craig T. Nelson and the always funny Betty White as Andrew's grandma. The Proposal is a great romantic comedy that everyone will enjoy. Trust me when Sandra busts out some dance moves to DJ Rob Base It Takes Two you will be hooked.
