Speed Racer
PG
Not just one of the best films of the year but one of the best OF ALL TIME! Incredible techno-fused hybrid of animation and live aciton is a joy for kids of ALL AGES! Emile Hirsch is brilliant as Speed, and the movie has one of the best, most positive messages of recent memory. Don't listen to the savage critics on this one, SPEED RACER is a 100% WINNER!
2.
Hero
PG-13
Current resident of the #1 spot on my Personal Pantheon all time favorites list. Incredible story, exceptional cinematography, WOW!!! Story is mesmerizing, and the cast is terrific. Yimou's use of color and water in this movie is absolutely stunning. Donnie Yen ROCKS!
3.
Wristcutters - A Love Story
R
WINNER of 3 2007 Poppies - BEST PICTURE, Best Actor (Patrick Fugit, co-winner with Christopher Plummer of "Man In The Chair"), Best Original Song ("Through The Roof And Underground"). I fell in love with this hilarious little movie at a special screening in April 2007 and named it my #3 all time Personal Pantheon favorite film this past June. Patrick Fugit is absolutely brilliant here, as are Shannon Sossomon and Shea Whigham. One of the best movie songs of all time in "Through The Roof And Underground" by Gogol Bordello. The end left me with tears in my eyes and a huge grin on my face!
4.
Brick
R
Outstanding noir set at San Clemente High School. This is the movie that turned me into a die-hard indie fans! It was awarded the Poppy for Best Picture 2006
5.
Lords of Dogtown
PG-13
Named my #4 Personal Pantheon favorite film, multiple Poppy winner for 2005, including ensemble cast, breakthrough performance, and Best Supporting Actor for Michael Angarano. I just don't get how people could NOT love this movie...the cast is stellar in depicting the lives of the three men who helped launch the modern era of skateboarding - John Robinson (2007 #1 PNR Rising Star) is brilliant as Stacy Peralta, Victor Rasuk is fantastic as Tony Alva, and Emile Hirsch launched himself on a path to superstardom as Jay Adams. All the right elements for an absolutely fantastic and CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED movie. Director Catherine Hardwick made me a fan FOR LIFE with this film!

Second Hand Wedding
by GaryIt seems this little gem of a movie is fairly unknown outside of New Zealand, but if you can track it down, it's a hilarious slice of kiwiana. Very funny with its typical self depricating humour and a big slice of family heart. I just caught this on R4 DVD and hope it gets the recognition it deserves. Also New Zealanders will recognise heaps of faces from national TV shows, which is kinda fun. A genuine Indie treat!
None of you have rated this great little New Zealand movie, so let me be the first to emphasise how hilarious it is! Good luck tracking down this gem!!

Tremors
by GaryFantastic B-movie horror/comedy with some genuinely creepy moments. The cast are fun (wow Kevin Bacon looks young) and there are genuine laughs to be had. The effects look a little dated now, but that's part of the fun with B-movies. Surprisingly great script makes this better than most of its kind and it spawned 3 sequels (which I suspect may suck). Sure it's a bit cheesy, but in all the best ways. Loved it as a kid and it still hraces my DVD collection. Grab it!!!
Broke out this classic last night and was reminded just how fun a cheesy B-movie horror/comedy can be.

August Rush
by GaryOutstanding modern fairytale emphasising the uniting power of music. The lead cast are endearing and likeable, and Robin Williams stretches his acting skills brilliantly. The uber-happy ending leans a little toward saccharine for me, but if you need cheering up and don't mind a bit of sentimentality, you won't be dissapointed. Between this and 'Once', it was a great year for films about music. Uplifting and moving.
Beautiful film with the happiest ending ever!
Check it out if you liked 'Once'.posted 10 days ago -

Superman: Doomsday
by GaryThe 'Death and Return of Superman' storyline gets an animated effort in this fairly liberal but still exciting presentation. While the story tends to drag and the action is few and far between, the fight scenes are simply awesome and the voice cast is outstanding all round. Far better than many comic book animations and well worth a look, even if you haven't caught the graphic novels. And... ya gotta love Superman in the black suit!
Not just for us comic book geeks. Teriffic fight scenes!

Across the Universe
by GaryBeautifully realised musical film with some clever uses of characters and songs. Beatles fans will love the use of source material, even if the musical segways are a bit of a stretch sometimes. The lead actors do a fine job, but most of the fun here comes from the multiple cameos from Bono, Eddie Izzard and Joe Cocker. It's artistic and visually impressive, but hardly life changing. Certainly make you wonder just how many drugs The Beatles really did!?!
And now for something completely different....

Horton Hears a Who!
by GaryAmazingly fun Dr Seuss adaptation with many moments of hilarity for all. Carrey and Carell are great fun in the leads, the animation is sharp and the visual style is true to Dr Seuss' vision. Feels a little padded to make the 80 minute mark and I'm pretty sure Dr Suess didn't write a manga/anime kung fu scene, but it's so much fun, you don't mind a few liberties. With a nice moral message and possibly the most hilarious 'knock knock' joke in movie history, Horton is not to be missed!!
Great fun! See it if only for the best 'knock knock' joke EVER!!!

The Colour of Magic
by GaryFans of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series will find much to love in this amazing adaptation of the first novel. 'Hogfather' was great and this is similarly fantastic and true to the mythos. David Jason and Sean Astin are great fun and the book is brought to life faithfully with one-liners intact. It does get a little long, but there is plenty to introduce here. Undoubtably the start of something great for fans of Pratchett. Bring on 'The Light Fantastic'!!!!
Oh Hell Yeah! The Discworld is alive and well.... more please!?!

The Mist
by GaryAnother fantastic Stephen King adaptation from Frank Darabont. Incredibly tense, well paced, gory and just plain fun. The rather large cast are good, but it's the storytelling and effects that make this one stand out. Special mention must be made for the rather 'heavy' ending, which has been the source of much debate among fans. Feels a little long at times, but it's worth the ride. A really nice surprise in what has been becoming a fairly tired genre. Bring a change of undies!
Underrated and genuinely thrilling! Check it out!

Nim's Island
by GaryVery much the harmless family affair with not only wasted talent, but it's also way too derivative of other recent work. Kid friendly is fine, but there's only so many CGI animals an adult can take and the story seemed like 80 minutes of build-up and 10 of wrap-up. On the bright side, it is fun and very colourful. Breslin was a nice surprise, even if Foster was atrociously miscast. Ultimately we've seen it all before and what passes for fantasy here could realistically be mistaken for schizophrenia. Mehhh.
Not a recommendation as such. Just confirming the suspicions of those who labelled this 'Not Interested'..... you are wise.

Be Kind Rewind
by GaryVisionary director Michel Gondry takes a potentially hilarious premise and really lets it go to waste in this quirky comedy. The moments of comedy are quite clever, but the various takes on popular movies could have handled so much better. The two leads are fun and it's nice to see Danny Glover again, but when the DVD special features are more entertaining than the feature, you know you just watched something less than memorable. Such a shame really.
It's not without its merits, but this Michel Gondry comedy could have been soooooo much more. Still, good fun.

There Will Be Blood
by GaryDaniel Day-Lewis proves once again that he is more than deserving of his Best Actor award in this outstanding portrayal of prospector Daniel Plainview. The epic story of greed, family and corruption is truly powerful and utterly engrossing. Beautiful set pieces, a well written script and confident direction by Paul Thomas Anderson make for a clever, entertaining and fascinating film. A must see for any film fan. Truly stunning filmmaking.
If you haven't it already, the runner up for Best Picture last year is essential viewing for any film fan.

Lars and the Real Girl
by GaryWhile it has some artistic merit, I gotta go against popular opinion here and say how much I disliked this film. Slow, bleak, boring and utterly lost. The idea of a person with mental illness being totally accepted and appreciated by a community is so far from reality that I almost expected 'Bianca' to come to life. Ryan Gosling is typically great and Emily Mortimer was a nice surprise, but the premise and blatant ignorance to the realities of mental illness just annoyed me. Overrated.
Perhaps the biggest dissapointment I've seen all year.
Just my opinion. Save the hate mail.posted 42 days ago -

Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theatres
by GaryVery much an aquired taste (no pun intended considering the three leads), but still loads of fun for those with a rather crooked sense of humour. It's unusual and completely off the wall, but there are some truly great gags. Those who haven't seen the Adult Swim show might be a bit lost, but a little homework goes a long way with the ATHF. Feels like a stretch as an 80 minute move, but ya gotta fear the 'insane-o-flex'. Check it out if you dare.
Very weird and not for everyone, but there are some good laughs in this very bizzare animated movie.

The Darjeeling Limited
by GaryTypically quirky Wes Anderson comedy with some truly touching moments. The 'spiritual quest' of the three brothers can seem a bit pointless at times, but it does offer up some genuinely enlightening and unique comedy. The three leads are great and there is a strangely alienating chemistry between them. The Indian countryside really deserves a credit too. Heartwarming fun and a nice companion piece to the short film 'Hotel Chevalier'.
Yeah, I know most of you have seen this already, but I really enjoyed it and wanted to share.
It's no 'Bottle Rocket', but it is smarter than your average comedy.posted 43 days ago -

The Spiderwick Chronicles
by GaryTremendous 'kids' fantasy with some oustanding special effects. Very well paced, visually innovative and some surprisingly dark moments (considering the target audience). Freddy Highmore does well playing a dual role, but the twin brothers are a little too similar to avoid confusion. Great family film, even if some younger audiences may find the creature design frightening. Some great voice acting too. Quite magical.
Brilliant special effects, but perhaps a bit dark for younger kids.

Robot Chicken Star Wars
by GaryAt a mere 23 minutes long, this Robot Chicken feature is flat out hilarious in its no holds barred parody of the much beloved franchise. The jokes are fresh and fast combines with fun animation. The major failing is that it's just a bunch of Star Wars related bits from the show with no links or linear story. In that respect Family Guy tackled the franchise far better. Still, Robot Chicken is a fantastic show to have in small doses anyway. Great fun!!
Perfect parody for those with ADD. Great fun, if a bit random.

Definitely, Maybe
by GaryNice little romantic comedy that shows Ryan Reynolds can be almost taken seriously sometimes. While it strays into chic flick territory a little too often, the three female leads are delightful and Isla Fisher particularly shines. The comedy of circumstance hits home, but for the most part the laughs are few. As a character driven story it works, but tends to get a little fluffy. I have to applaude the ending which makes the brave move so many other rom-coms do not. Fun fluff.
The first movie I've had a chance to see in weeks!
A bit girlie and nice, but still enjoyable.posted 50 days ago
