Quirky charmer that melds documentary about finding love with a fictional love story between co-producer and star Charlyne Yi and actor Michael Cera playing themselves. Hilariously funny in some spots, deeply poignant in others. Ultimately very satisfying. Great soundtrack also!
Visually lush but sometimes slow biopic of Amelia Earhart with Hillary Swank in another potentially Oscar-nominated lead. Richard Gere has his best part in years as Earhart's husband George Putnam. Christopher Eccleston steals the show in the last half as Fred Noonan, Earhart's navigator on her final flight. Top notch score, and visually stunning flight sequences help make this movie and also help propel it to it's inevitable conclusion.
Fun but not completely satisifying directorial debut from Drew Barrymore follows a teenager with a mother who pushes her towards beauty competitions that becomes obsessed with women's roller derby. Great supporting turn by SNL's Kristen Wiig. Ellen Page is great as always! Not a must see, but you'll enjoy it if you catch it...
Heart-lighting follow up to Paris J'etame follows separate mini-movies about love in New York City. Anton Yelchin and Olivia Thirlby shine in Brett Ratner's segment, easily the best segment of the movie, with the closing piece with Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman a close second. Kept from a potential five-star rating by a couple of unsettling interstitials, and a confusing segment with Julie Christie and Shia LeBeouf. Can't wait for the DVD!
Chris Rock looks at black hair culture in this hilarious documentary, inspired by his daughter's question, "Daddy, why don't I have good hair?" Award-winner at Sundance this year.
Fantastic spooky story about saving humanity in a world where machines have won the war against men. Voice work from a stellar cast makes this even better. Special effects are fantastic for an computer animated film, and two or three scenes are truly frightening, with one particular scene being possibly nightmare inducing. A MUST SEE for all movie fans this year!
Surprisingly underrated comedy about how the classic Woodstock concert came together. Demitri Martin is perfect in his lead role, his first film. Emile Hirsch is excellent in his small but pivotal role, and Liev Schrieber steals the whole movie as an unexpected transvestite who provides security. One of my favorite films so far this year!
Fantastic fun for Halloween. Hilariously funny zombie movie, with great performances by the whole cast, including Woody Harrleson, whom I usually don't like. Top notch entertainment that will leave you rolling in the aisles...
Fun if not perfect big-screen version of the Darren Shan books. Chris Massoglia is perfect as nebbishy, parent-trodden teen who agrees to become a half-vampire to save his neer-do-well best friend from a deadly spider bit that he's responsible for. Josh Hutcherson is fantastic as the roguish Steve, and John C Reilly is perfect as the lead vampire.
Outstanding adaption of the classic Anime series, with Freddy Highmore doing outstanding voicework as Astroboy. Very satisifying action, and a message that Family means everything sandwiched into a decent story.
I have not laughed this hard at a movie in years! Brilliantly funny on nearly every level, and masterful performances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel and Chloe Moretz are the highpoint of this wonderful little story. It needs more advertising and more word of mouth. Definately a MAJOR contender for our end of year awards this December. An absolute WINNER and already named to the #6 slot on my Top 100 Personal Pantheon Films list last month!
Decent entry in the series, although the ending left me flat. THe usual suspects are all here and delivering their usual outstanding performances. Love the chemistry between Radcliffe and Gambon here - it's better than ever before. Booklovers will be sorely disappointed by the ending.
Outstanding romp from Pixar, although 3D really didn't add anything for me - I would have rather seen the 3D on WALL-E last year. Wonderful voice performances from Ed Asner and Christopher Plummer make this story of a crotchy widower determined to make it to the spot he and his late wife always dreamed about a winner from start to finish.
Fun but ultimately disappointed sequel that doesn't really do much new that they didn't already do in the first movie. Shia LeBeouf is great as always, and John Turturo steals the show, but Megan Fox is wasted and the guy playing Sam's roommate is just so annoying he ruins every scene he's in. They really need to kick some originality into the planned third film in the series...otherwise, they're going to blow a good franchise...
Engaging and quirky doc about a couple who spends their extra income on artwork - so much that they have no room in their NYC apartment for anything but a bed, a kitchen table, and a refrigerator. Herb and Dorothy are two very sweet and engaging people, loved in NYC art circles, and deservedly so. A Wonderful look inside the artworld for novices like us.
Masterful melding of two wonderful books. Meryl Streep blows me away with her eerily accurate Julia Child - should land her an Oscar nom next winter. Superb and truly funny comedy - easily one of the best movies of the year.
Reviewers are taking themselves too seriously on this one - seriously fun, but not brain surgery either. Enjoy it for what it's supposed to be - mindless popcorn fun
I never EVER thought i'd pay to see a Ben Stiller movie, but friends have a lot of influence, and I have to say this movie is drop dead FUNNY from beginning to end...a NEW experience for a Stiller movie. Robert Downey Jr shines as a method actor who had his skin darkened to play the part of a black man in this "Apocalpse Now" wannabe the actors are making. Highly recommended to nyone who doesn't mind raunchy humor...it was a TRUE - and very pleasant - surprise!
Outstandlingly fun romp through ABBA's music catalog, pigeonholed into a rather flimsy story, but what the hell - it's loads of fun from beginning to end! Julie Walters and Christine Baranski steal this movie out from under everyone else, and as a note to Hollywood producers - Never EVER let Pierce Brosnan attempt to sing AGAIN! A great film for just about EVERYONE!
If this were the 80s this fun romp would be a John Hughes movie! Michael Cera and Kat Dennings are PERFECT together as the title characters, thrown together at a nightspot when Nick's ex-girlfriend makes fun of the dateless Norah. Plenty of hilarity ensues, along with a genuinely touching romance. Easily one of the BEST movies of 2008!
