Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - R Magnificent adaptation of the Sondheim musical. Johnny Depp gives the performance of his career here, and Helena Bonham Carter is awesome! Fantastic discoveries in newcomers Jamie Campbell Bower and Ed Sanders. I didn't particularly like the ending, but still, overall, it was a FANTASTIC movie, and another notch in the fantastic career of Tim Burton. A major Poppies contender this year. December 25, 2007

King Kong - PG-13 Peter Jackson's reimagining of the classic story won the Poppy for 2005 Best Picture. Stupendous remake is absolutely fantastic, though a bit overlong in the middle section. Adrian Brody and Naomi Watts are excellent as the couple, Kyle Chandler is hysterical as the self-obsessed actor, and Jack Black won me over as the obsessive director Carl Denham. Jamie Bell and Andy Serkis also stand out among the supporting cast. Thanks to Jackson's decision to set this in the 1930's like the original, it completely WORKS (unlike 1976's godawful updated remake). November 22, 2007

Still Green - Unrated Fantastic ensemble piece about a group of friends between high school and college who rent a beach house right before leaving for college, and who end up facing life when a tragedy strikes one of their own. The cast is absolutely terrific, with Noah Segan (Brick) a real standout as Sean. Despite what Flixster says, it is NOT out on DVD - it has just had it's festival premiere about two weeks ago, but it's definately a top choice to see when it does arrive. November 22, 2007

Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower) - R Another amazing spectacle from Zhang Yimou. The cinematography is absolutely phenomenal on this story of the family of the Emperor of China circa 1000 AD. Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li are absolutely fantastic. Didn't like the ending, however, marring it's chance for a perfect score. If you're a fan of director Yimou, it's a must see film. November 22, 2007

Hairspray - PG A WINNER!!! All the way around, easily the BEST musical since GREASE in 1978. Nikki Blonski is MAGNIFICENT as Tracy, and John Travolta actually made me forget he was a man by halfway through the film playing Tracy's Mom! Christopher Walken is wonderful as her dad, and the rest of the cast is just plain PERFECT. Loved seeing James Marsden in a fun role for a change. I was ready to get up and dance before the end of opening song "Good Morning Baltimore", and my feet never stopped moving through the entire movie. Destined to be a singalong staple in the not-too-distant future as well! You cannot help but have a wonderful time when you see it! November 19, 2007

Happy Feet - PG Absloutely THE charmer of all animated films - I named it my top animated film of all time on this years Personal Pantheon list, where it came in at #8 overall. The graphics are amazing, the soundtrack is wonderful, and the voice work of Elijah Wood, EG Daily, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Robin Williams, Fat Joe, Hugo Weaving, Brittany Murphy and the late Steve Irwin is just fantastic. I saw this four times at the theater, and have seen it several times since it came out on DVD. There is just NOTHING BAD about it. A KEEPER for generations to come...both the fun, and the message... Beowulf - PG-13 Outstanding adaptation of the classic novel. 3-D technology is incredible, the animation is frighteningly real. Ray Winstone gives a stellar performance that is destined to bring him even more fans than he has now. Absolutely a Poppies contender, and one of the best films of all time. November 18, 2007

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium - G Slow starting but ultimately satisfying tale reminded me a lot of the original Willy Wonka story. Zach Mills steals the movie as Eric, but Hoffman is hilarious as the title character, and Jason Bateman turns in a performance that I actually enjoyed quite a lot. Effects are quite good, and the credits are a scream to film fans. November 17, 2007
