    WALL-E WALL-E
    4.5 Stars by Fish
In a distant, but not so unrealistic future, where mankind has abandoned earth because it has become covered with trash from products sold by the powerful multi-national Buy N Large corporation, WALL-E, a garbage collecting robot has been left to clean up the mess. Mesmerized with trinkets of earth's history and show tunes, WALL-E is alone on Earth except for a sprightly pet cockroach. One day, Eve, a sleek (and dangerous) reconnaissance robot, is sent to earth to find proof that life is once again sustainable. WALL-E falls in love with Eve. WALL-E rescues Eve from a dust storm and shows her a living plant he found amongst the rubble. Consistent with her "directive" Eve takes the plant and automatically enters a deactivated state except for a blinking green beacon. WALL-E, doesn't understand what has happened to his new friend, but true to his love, he protects her from wind, rain, and lightning, even as she is unresponsive. One day a massive ship comes to reclaim Eve, but WALL-E, out of love or loneliness hitches a ride on the outside of the ship to rescue Eve. The ship arrives back at a large space cruise ship, which is carrying all of the humans who evacuated earth 700 years earlier. The people of earth ride around this space resort on hovering chairs which give them a constant feed of TV and video chatting. They drink all of their meals through a straw out of laziness and/or bone loss, and are all so fat that they can barely move. When the auto-pilot computer, acting on hastily given instructions sent many centuries before, tries to prevent the people of earth from returning, by stealing the plant, WALL-E, Eve, the portly captain, and a band of broken robots stage a mutiny.

I consider this the Godfather of animated films. Not only was it just a breakthrough when it comes to animated films, it also brought the genre of animation into a whole new another level.

Wall-E is where science fiction meets romance meets comedy meets the heart and soul of every movie going audience who've seen the film. I'm not sure about the other people but this film captured me hook, line and sinker. Believe it or not this is by far the most romantic film I have seen this year. Going into the theaters I immediately expected greatness seeing as its a Pixar film but goddamn it the romance angle just came out of nowhere. And I got hooked. And here I thought I'd never see the day where I'd cheer for two metallic pieces of junk falling in love.

The story of the film is beyond greatness. In fact, the undertone message it delivered was more fun and enjoyable than Al Gore's sleepfest docu "An Inconvenient Truth". After I saw the film, I was thinking what if this could happen in the future? Well, not in the literal term but what if every little thing we do, even the basic things in life, we're gonna have to need the assistance of a machine? Right now maybe you're thinking its impossible but if you observe the modern society today, with technology rapidly evolving and growing, I'm starting to think we're heading to Wall-E's world already. Just think about it.

    Wall-E is a 4.5/5
Pixar does it again, one of the best animated film I have seen.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? O Brother, Where Art Thou?
    4.0 Stars by Fish
Delmar O'Donnell: "Them syreens did this to Pete. They loved him up and turned him into a horny toad."

Disenchanted with the daily drudge of crushing rocks on a prison farm in Mississippi, the dapper, silver-tongued Ulysses Everett McGill busts loose. Except he's still shackled to his two chain-mates from the chain gang -- bad-tempered Pete and sweet, dimwitted Delmar. With nothing to lose and buried loot to regain -- before it's lost forever in a flood -- the three embark on the adventure of a lifetime in this hilarious offbeat road picture. Populated with strange characters, including a blind prophet, sexy sirens and a one-eyed Bible salesman, it's an odyssey filled with chases, close calls, near misses and betrayal that will leave you laughing at every outrageous and surprising twist and turn.

While it may not be the most profound movie ever made, "O Brother" exudes a cheerful, uncomplicated spirit that no other film can match. Apart from introducing a great deal of beautiful music, the Coen brothers have managed to tell a pleasant, whimsical, and ultimately touching story which is no less than perfect after its own fashion. If you want a movie that makes you think and feel deeply, than it might be better to give this one a miss, but if you simply want to smile and laugh and feel better about the world, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" fits the bill.

A wonderful movie that should be mandatory for all school-kids to see. Directed by Denzel and produced by Oprah, this was amazing. Forest Whitaker was awesome as always.

Watching that 14 yo (Whose name is Denzel Whitaker...strange coincidence) debate at Harvard was very moving. I also liked seeing the photos of the "real" characters at the end credits.

    Great movie! Highly recommended!

Paris Je T'aime Paris Je T'aime
    4.0 Stars by Fish
"Francine: There are times when life calls out for a change. A transition. Like the seasons. Our spring was wonderful, but summer is over now and we missed out on autumn. And now all of a sudden, it's cold, so cold that everything is freezing over. Our love fell asleep, and the snow took it by surprise. But if you fall asleep in the snow, you don't feel death coming. Take care"

This review will be pretty long so bear with me. Paris Je T'aime or (Paris, I Love You) is a collaboration of international directors all over the world and tells stories about love in the City of Love. The film is broken down into 18 short films by different directors. While some segments bore me out of my skull and most of them, impressive, "Paris, Je T'aime" as an entity is a brilliant piece of work. Okay, so we'll start off with:

Montmartre: This is the birthplace of one of film's most celebrated characters, Amelie. The short "Montmartre" directed by French writer-director Bruno Podalydes tells the story of a man psycho-analyzing all women who pass by him while inside his car on a parking spot. Fate decides to pair him up with a woman with low sugar level and the rest is history. The opening short was pretty okay, nothing out of the ordinary, it was a generic "when boy meets girl" love story and that was that.

Quais de Seine: A story about three hopeless teenage boys who teases every women they see. One of them however meets a lovely young Muslim woman and immediately on the get-go, it is love at first sight. This segment was better than the first but again nothing special. Directors Chadha & Berges showed that love knows no boundaries even if you're from different ethnicities.

Le Marais: A pretty awkward short by Gus Van Sant. A homosexual Gaspard Ulliel is somehow attracted to a young printshop worker and believes they are soul mates. You can call it a twist perhaps and this short's conclusion will give you a chuckle. The guy said call him not run.

Tuileries: At this part of the film it's already picking up pace as American filmmakers the Coen brothers directs this hilarious segment that stars Steve Buscemi in a non-speaking role and tells the story of an American tourist who breaks the cardinal rule of eye contact while in a Tuileries station. This bit had me laughing all the way and I loved every minute of it.

Loin du 16e: A beautiful short about a woman who leaves her baby in a daycare before taking a long commute to her employer's house to take care of the employer's baby. This one is beautiful. That's all I can say. The lullaby that she sings is quite catchy too.

Porte de Choisy: When I saw this one it reminded me of David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive". Because in a nutshell, this film is just plain weird. So this guy, a hairstylist, heads out to Chinatown in Paris and from this point forward I didn't understand what was going on. The guys who made this must be high up their boners when they shot this one. And alas, it requires second viewing to fully understand it.

Bastille: This is one of my favorites. The story will make you sad although I did not cry like a leaked faucet, I'm still depressed every time I remember this bit.

Place des Victoires: So the previous short was sad right? Wait until you get a hold of this one. Japanese director Nobuhiro Suwa directs Juliette Binoche as a grieving mother and Willem Dafoe as a magical cowboy. This bit is "Bastille" but ten times sad. The story is just heart-breaking.

Tour Eiffel: French animator Sylvain Chomet directs this cute little short about a boy who tells how his parents who are both mimes, meet in prison and fall in love. "Tour Eiffel" is a funny, feel-good, romantic, cute short film that'll surely tickle your funny bone. This one is up there too.

Parc Monceau: Alfonso Cuaron's collaboration stars chain-smoking Nick Nolte and feisty Ludivine Sagnier as they talk about something I don't really care about in one continuous single shot. I can see the effort but the dialogue failed to glue the audience to the characters presented on-screen. Turns out, the 3rd person was the young lady's baby. Wow.

Quartier des Enfants Rouges: French filmmaker Oliver Assayas directs Maggie Gyllenhaal as an American actress in Paris who obtains unstable hashish from her dealer. What kept me glued to this one is not the story but Maggie's acting. It may be short but it was enough. Strong emotions radiates from her face and it is simply amazing.

Place des fêtes: "Bastille" was sad, "Place des Victoires" was 10x sadder but this one is the saddest of the whole bunch. Actually, its not sad, its fucking depressing. To think that it was a short 6 minute film but it felt like watching all of Darren Aronofsky's films in one fell swoop. The short starts simple but then it builds up to one tragic ending with the symbolic, almost poetic, concluding shot of the two coffees the woman is holding.

Pigalle: Remember when I said some shorts bored me out of my skull, well, this is one of them. I love Bob Hoskins as an actor and all but why would I give a flying fuck about two old farts arguing in front of a prostitute? I'm sorry but this short is more suited for old farts.

Quartier de la Madeleine: Vincenzo Natali directs Elijah Wood and Olga Kurylenko in this vampirical take of a love story in the city of Paris. I'm not really a fan of the whole vampire myth but if the vampire is as feisty as Olga Kurylenko, then I'll gladly let her bite me. This one was stunning in a vampiric, weird kind of way. I love it.

Père-Lachaise: This one also belongs to the "Bored-Me-Out-of-My-Skull" department. I didn't know what was going on here. So this woman breaks up with the guy because the guy hates Oscar Wilde but then he trips and bumps his head on Wilde's epitaph and poof! Wilde appears to him to give some love advice and then he runs to the woman to reconcile with her. Yep, that's pretty much it. Sorry, Wes Craven, you're at the back of the line.

Faubourg Saint-Denis: This one is the best of them all. It easily takes the cake as the best short out of the rest well mainly because its directed by underrated German director Tom Tykwer. It also stars Natalie Portman and it is the most deeply affectionate love story of the bunch. Tykwer's style of directing was so spectacular and beautiful and amazing plus you have the most heart-wrenching montage you will ever see. Its just brilliant.

Quartier Latin: Another bore out of my skull short film, this film is about two old farts who meet at a restaurant for one last special dinner before they get divorced. Like I said in "Pigalle", this one is more suitable for old farts.

14e arrondissement: And last but not least, the most amazingly written short directed by Alexander Payne tells the story of a woman from Denver, Colorado who, while on her first Parisian holiday, narrates in rough French what she loves about Paris. The monologue of the woman is well-written and witty. Add to that her fake European accent will make you smile awkwardly. And I love it.

So that's it. My very lengthy review of "Paris, Je T'aime". You'll never see a review this long until "New York, I Love You" comes out. Can't wait.

    4/5
That's pretty long. Care reading that?

Rented this with my 16 yo son, and he hated it. He's a horror fan like I am, and we both predicted the ending within the first half hour. I didn't see the original, but it had to be better. Question? Why is it that every remake I've seen has to have a blonde girl in the lead? The Ring, The Grudge, Shutter. Is that a prerequisite for the remake? LOL

Heath was amazing. Chilling. Why so serious? Because it needed to be this time. This is the "serious" one! No canned laughter this time out....only Joker's haunting, hysterical glee.

Gordon (Oldman) got more screen time, and I was happy. He is an amazing actor. While I found myself paying more attention to Bale's underbite than what he was saying, the movie lived up to the hype. Now all I want to see is who will play the bad, dirty, evil, serious Catwoman this time.....hmmmm
And I agree with sexivixxen....Heath's Joker blew Jack away. He raised the bar to a whole nutha level! RIP Heath...we won't soon forget you.

Wesley: This is not me... this is just a motherfucking decoy.

This is definitely one of the most entertaining films to have come out this year. And by "entertain", I mean mindless, campy, fun and reeks of awesomeness. "Wanted" maybe filled with plot holes as big as Jupiter but at least they made it up in the area of visual style served with a side platter of sizzling action. There's a lot of cussing too. And they got Morgan Freeman to say the word "Motherfucker", how cool is that? Initially, I would have given this a four but hearing Morgan Freeman cuss is just priceless.

The car chase scenes would make Speed Racer proud, the bullets have minds of their own and lead actor James McAvoy masterfully disguises his British accent to embody the perfect American loser turned bad ass. This is what makes this film so damn irresistible. Top to that you have natural born fly guy Thomas Kretschmann in a very crucial role to the film plus Angelina Jolie in her bad ass form. Seriously, she was born to be a bad ass in films. That's why I loved Mr. and Mrs. Smith, she has this natural spunk in her which makes her cool without even trying. I think its the look and those lips.

Now I know a lot of people dissed the film because its a) a rip-off, b) the story doesn't make sense and c) it is pretty stupid. That's probably because you didn't leave your pseudo-intellectual mindset right at the doorstep. Films like these, you don't have to take seriously. And I quote The Joker on this one: "Why so serious?"

Take it for what it is: a very entertaining film and I think you'll be alright. Now, don't just fucking sit there reading this bullshit and I highly fucking suggest you fucking go see this one. Like, right fucking now.

The Dark Knight The Dark Knight
    5.0 Stars by Fish
Harvey Dent: You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain

Wow. Just wow. And I thought Batman Begins is the epitome of comic book movies. The Dark Knight isn't just the best comic book film ever, its one of the best films to have come out in recent memory. Everything in it is amazingly done and in tip-top shape. From the out-of-this-world acting to the heart pounding musical score courtesy of elite scorers James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer. Every little bit worked in the film's advantage and not one bit seemed annoying or dragged. The story is near damn poetic especially the end parts where Batman had to make a big decision for the betterment of Gotham city. To avoid spoiling the film, I will only say this: the ending is epic. Though there were a couple of questions left unanswered like what will happen to Harvey Dent and since Heath's untimely death, what will become of The Joker in the 3rd installment?

Speaking of the late great Heath Ledger, his portrayal of The Joker is beyond words. It was much hyped even before its release and some were highly speculating that he might get a posthumous Oscar for this one. Well, along with the millions of people on this side of Earth, I think he really, really deserves it. The Oscars must be high up their asses if they pass up this one. If an Oscar won't work because of the film's mainstream status, at least have the heart to recognize it. Heath Ledger went away with a bang and he deserves all the praise he gets. It was a darker, mature and grittier version than Nicholson's comical performance in the Tim Burton film. Granted, Nicholson's performance was stellar that is until Heath Ledger came into the picture. Ledger's Joker makes Nicholson's look like a mascot for a Disney ride. His Joker is a walking hell on Earth and his devilish philosophies and ideas will make you cower in absolute fear. I'm so glad Nolan left out the origin idea for The Joker because if they did, the mystery and creepy factor of the character will turn down a notch. It won't be as "absolute" as planned. Every scene with Ledger's Joker is hellacious and watching it on IMAX is a thousand times more hellacious. His Joker is near perfection his portrayal easily catapults the character as one of the best movie villains of all time. He takes the top spot alongside Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter, Star Wars' Darth Vader and Spacey's John Doe. And to tell you the truth, if I think of The Dark Knight, one enduring image is imprinted on my mind: The Joker with his head sticking out a police car with no audible sound in the background. That's it right there, I knew I had to give this film a 5. The theater went silent for a while because that scene was just too much to handle. Ledger's maniacal portrayal combined with Nolan's masterful skills, its a match made in heaven.

Of course its not all Joker with this film. The titular hero portrayed by Hollywood thespian Christian Bale, need I say more? He's the guy you can trust to amazingly portray dark and gritty characters. And yes I think he's the best Batman, no doubt Keaton's was excellent and Kilmer's was just "eh?" and don't start with Clooney, I'm still not over with those Bat Nipples. But Christian Bale is the embodiment of Bruce Wayne. Just as much as Heath Ledger is The Joker, the same thing applies with Christian Bale. He is Batman, he is Bruce Wayne.

And then there's Aaron Eckhart. He superbly portrays District Attorney Harvey Dent and fiendishly embodies his menacing alter-ego Two-Face. This is the first time I've seen Eckhart do a serious dramatic role, his previous films were either cheeky love stories or cheeky comedy flicks or a combination of both. Not that I'm getting tired of him seeing in those films but every actor needs to tread uncharted territory to prove their versatility and I think Mr. Eckhart just did that here. His Two-Face makes Tommy Lee Jones' portrayal in Schumacher's appalling rendition a big hunk of fecal matter. And man, for a PG-13 of a film, Two-Face's ugly side is gory-licious to the umpteenth dimension.

The remaining actors should be proud too. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman, they were all amazing. A wise move for Nolan to replace horrendous Katie Holmes for Maggie "Sherrybaby" Gyllenhaal. Her character's fate in the film saddens me but you see...it's all...part of the plan.

The Dark Knight is the best film of 2008. There is no "so-far", there is no "to date". This is the best film of 2008 hands down no questions asked bar none. You're missing out a lot if you still haven't seen this one. I suggest you go now. Like, now.

    5/5
You had to expect it coming. The Dark Knight is much hyped and in my honest opinion, it lived up to it.

Watch it now in your nearest theater. IMAX is better tho.
