The Heartbreak Kid - R Sometimes ? as in There?s Something About Mary ? the Farrelly Brothers are able to get the balance right between vulgarity and heart, tastelessness and warmth (or, at least, something approaching warmth). When their hearts are in the right place, it works to their movies? benefits.

Otherwise, the films just become exercises in crudity and outrageous frat-boy humor. This is not to say that some of that outrageous comedy isn?t funny ? some of it is, but can only take so much of it at one time, and after a while the boorishness can become tiresome.

This is the problem with The Heartbreak Kid, the Farrellys? remake of Elaine May?s 1972 film of the same name. While there are some flat-out hilarious scenes (such as the one where a formerly demure girlfriend turns into a rather insatiable sexual tigress in a marital bed), there?s also a mean-spiritedness to the whole enterprise which makes you squirm in your seat. Most of the characters ? even our so-called hero, Eddie (Ben Stiller) ? are unlikable and so there is hardly anybody to relate to. The exception to the rule is the sweet and charming Miranda (Michelle Monaghan) whom Eddie meets on his honeymoon and is immediately ready to dump his wife, Lila (Malin Akerman) for.

No wonder Eddie thinks that she is the real woman of his dreams because Lila is any man?s worst nightmare come true (except for the fact that she glows with California blonde goodness). But while Eddie may have cause, and Lila may be more a cartoon character than real person, he still comes across as shallow and selfish.

Live Free or Die Hard - PG-13 McClane, the yippee-kai-yaying, never-say-die hero of 3 previous films is back with Live Free Or Die Hard, which comes 12 years after the last. But the intervening years haven?t slowed our hero ? played with his usual squinty-eyed, square-jawed, hard-assness ? down one bit, no sirree, bob! He may have lost some hair but he?s as tough as ever ? which the bad guys, led by cool criminal mastermind, learn to their dismay.

This time around McClane is assisted by a young computer hacker, who?s along for the ride as well as the possibility ? considering his current popularity with the teen set ? luring in the younger viewer to expand the movie?s box offices chances.

The basic plot ? where a group of computer evil geniuses brings the United States to its knees by attacking its information technology infrastructure ? may have some plausibility. But it?s in the movie details, like how McClane zeroes in on exactly the right place where the bad guys are at just the right time or how his sidekick manages to make his digital phone/blackberry work as powerfully as any supercomputer, where things start getting a little ridiculous. That?s kind of par for movies of this ilk but the earlier Die Hard movies, the first two in particular, had set the bar higher with their wit and gritty action.

Still, Willis remains watch-able and the action is fun, if sometimes a tad unbelievable and Willis?s smackdown with Maggie Q? (from MI:III) is particularly exciting.
