| The Dark Knight - PG-13 |
I could write a book about this film, but I'll just write a fairly long review.
The Dark Knight is the best Batman film ever. Period. This is Batman in its truest form. It's masterfully created, everything about this film is good. It's undeniably dark feel, it's acting, the form of drama that makes the plot surrounding batman feel like an excellent crime drama on its own. Without batman this still would've been a good film. First off, acting; the best in any batman film, ever. These are the best interpretations of the batman characters. Never before have the Joker, two face or batman been better portrayed. Especially the joker. Heck, let me talk about the joker. The Joker in this film is nothing at all like previous incarnations. The comic book joker does what he does for money. He's a coward, he's insane, and what he does has a reason. This Joker is....much different. He kills for fun, he creates these elaborate ploys because he has a driving force within him to do these things, he doesn't do it for money. He won't kill batman, he simply wants to fulfill his purpose, to quarell with batman. The comic book/tim burton joker would kill batman any chance he gets, he wants money, he cares about himself. This joker doesn't care about himself, he treats every day like he'll die tomorrow. That is what makes this joker signifigant. It makes him intriuging, interesting, the kind of character you'd want to explore. Heath Ledger played this character better than anyone has. Ever. Now that I have that out of my system, lets talk about the story. For the first time ever, this film feels great on its own. The story fits together perfectly. The previous batman films--don't get me wrong, some of the scripts are good--have never fit togther well enough to really feel like a superhero film. This one succeeds at that and more. Its dark, it's gritty, it's disturbingly realistic. That is the way batman films were supposed to be made. Nolan has redefined the series. This film has changed the way superhero films will be seen in the future. Go see it. |

| Wanted - R |
So, being a fan of the comic, I was quite excited about the movie. I felt that Wanted would translate perfectly to the screen. Alas, I left the theater both dissapointed and satisfied. As a movie, it was excellent. As an adaption, not so much. They made so many changes from the comic....most of the plot is different, the characters are quite different...It was only 1/4 an adaption. They retained some of the plot from the comic, like the main plot outline and the protagonists objective. The main character, Welsey Gibson(McAvoy, who portrayed this character perfectly) is a complete loser. He works a dead end job, his girlfriend, his boss, and his best friend walk all over him. He's sick of life, and desires something more. One day, he is approached by an assassin named Fox(Jolie) and informed that his father, also contract killer, was killed by an assassin known as cross. He enters The Fraternity, a secret society of professional killers, and discovers that he has inherited his fathers uncanny skill with a gun. Using his newfound talents, he goes on a quest to find his fathers killer.
That's pretty much the only similarity between the comic and film. the rest is made for the movie. I really didn't like how they failed to retain the original plot, and that made me feel like this was a wasted effort as an adaption, yet an excellent action film. But, I realized that the comic would be nearly impossible to adapt, and still retain the action and excitement of the comic. Thus, this film suceeds in creating a semi-faithful adaption of the comic, and still keeping it realistic. This review will probably be impossible for anyone other than myself to understand. Overall, if you like action films, check it out. |

| Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2) - PG-13 |
So, I went to go see a double feature--Hellboy 2, and The Dark Knigh(which I will review next)t, in that order. I went to the premeire of TDK(12:00) and watched Hellboy 2 and 9 pm, before. I really liked the previous hellboy, and subsequently with the good reviews, I expected a good film.
Boy, was I dissapointed. The film has some good things about it--the acting and special effects, the welcome addition of the "comic relief" character to the roster, Johnathan Krauss, and some bad things...Like, the romantic subplots, the sudden lack of emotion in sections of the film, and the way that hellboy looked as a toddler. It bugged me. They have really no where to go with the series now--If they made a threequel, it would be the equivelent to Shrek 3. It would be a two hour sitcom. Overall, this film is decent, but fails to entertain me the way the former film did. |

| Johnny Stecchino (Johnny Toothpick) - Unrated | Awful. simply awful. The director is a disgrace to all mankind. The only movie worse than this was that other movie he made, pinnochio. And daredevil, that also sucked. | July 14, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Get Smart - PG-13 | June 23, 2008 | N/A | ||||
| Sin City 2 - Unrated | First one was brilliant, why should this one be any different? | June 20, 2008 | N/A | |||
| American History X - R | Not that I support the motive of the main character of this film, but I really did enjoy it. Edward Norton remains my favorite actor. | May 6, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Iron Man - PG-13 | A pinnacle of achievment for Marvel Studios. All of the movies made by Marvel Studios have that certain feel; You can tell it's based, even if you didn't know when you began watching it. The idea of a good comic book movie is it staying faithful to its origins, they say. The movie can be decent but be critically acclaimed just because it's a solid adaption to the original story. It gives it an excuse to be stupid, campy, and ridiculous. And that's whats always bugged me about Super Hero movies. Once you remove it's mask, you see how mediocre and stupid it is. But this movie...this is something different. By itself, the movie was brilliant. Great acting(minus Terrence howard)great script, great action, it's just an overall terriffic movie. Robert was the best guy for the role. I'm sad to see all of my favorite heros played by mediocre actors(*cough* Ben Affleck *cough*)but Robert only made me love the character even more. A charming balance of humor, action, romance and drama. Go see it, even if you hate comic book movies. You'll still be drawn in by the charasmatic characters, edge-of-your-seat fight scenes, and spell binding story. Check it out. | May 5, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Dirty Harry - R |
"I know what you're thinkin' punk, did he fire six shots or only five? I'll admit, I was so caught up in the excitment I lost count myself. Well, you gotta ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, doya, PUNK?"
Whoa. This is basically fistful of dollars in 1970's San Francisco, except ten times better. Brilliant film, possibly the greatest "heroic bloodshed" film of all time. Clint Eastwood stars as Harry Callahan, a good cop with a bad attitude. In the film, he, with the help of his new partner, investigate a string of random, brutal murders. Along the way, Harry's brutal, yet effective methods are displayed. Eventually, the serial killer, Scorpio, demands a random for a "living" hostage, and Harry takes the job. After a wild goose chase all around San Francisco, he finally meets with Scorpio, only to be disarmed and tortured. Moments before Scorpio kills Harry, his partner intervenes, leaving all three wounded, although scorpio escapes. After the find the dead body of the hostage, Harry....well, lets just say he, instead of just using the "tough cop" approach, he uses the "Rambo' approach. Basically, he stops at nothing to kill Scorpio. Great film, and hands down the greatest Clint Eastwood movie. EVER. You will watch it. Now. |

| Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - R | i've heard alot about this film. Some say its one of the best british crime films ever. Even though its not pefect, i concur. The plot is interesting and engaging, the acting, for the most part, was excellent, except for the portrayal of harry the hatchet, which was terrible. I would have given it a 4 if someone else had played him. If you're looking for a very serious, dramatic crime film, this is probably isnt for you. It instead seems like a blend of Layer Cake and Hot Fuzz. It's more of a dark humored comedy than a crime film. Anyways, it has alot going for it, but arguably so. | April 25, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - R | Bloody Fuckin' brilliant. Great film. I really wanted to see this movie months before it came out, before the huge uproar. This is one of the few muscials I like, most are only okay for my liking. Great acting and music, but the ending fell a bit short. Aside from that, good interpretation of the musical. Check it out. | April 15, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Grosse Pointe Blank - R |
A spectacular comedy- one of the funniest movies I've seen since Fear and Loathing. Martin, a depressed everyman, is bored and tired with his line of work; killing people. At the pinnacle of his career, his is contemplating retiring, but gets one final assignment and an invitation to a high school reunion. And they both happen to be in the same place; Grosse Pointe. He goes back, to Grosse Pointe and comes along a woman whom he deserted on prom night(and has been obsessed with for years0 and, in an attempt to make amends and to possibly release his strong, repressed attraction to her, he asks her out on the reunion. Though, there's one problem. Several hitman are on his tail.
This is an excellent movie, great for fans of action and comedy. I hghly reccomend it. |

| Shoot 'Em Up - R | A very strange movie....I expected a dumb, ultra serious, ultra violent movie, but it wasn't that at all. Well, it was ultra violent, but it, in no way, was serious. The plot is campy, and the action scenes are ridiculous and fun to watch. Overall, a fun movie, but the plot was lacking, not that it mattered. | April 4, 2008 | N/A | |||

| Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - PG-13 |
Saw it in IMAX. I gotta say....
It's freakin' amazing. It may be the best in the series. Top notch acting, music, and effects. If you like Harry Potter, or thrillers, you will love this movie. Go check it out. |

| Layer Cake - R |
Well, I'm in a British crime film mood so decided to check this one out, mainly because of the cast, with Daniel Craig and Michal Gambon. The movie.....is very, very complex. Hence the title, it has layers. Craig plays a Drug Dealer who is looking to collect one last roll, and go into retirement. But, he is adbruptly thrown into a violent world of corruption and greed. People are trying to kill him, take his drugs, and, plainly, put him out of buisness. As interesting as the storyline may seem. I don't think it translated properly. Too many un-explored subplots, very little character development, and some bad scriptwriting plague this film. I'd only buy this film if they threw in a better film, like hitman.....
And some cake. And Belgium..... |

| No Country for Old Men - R |
You know, for years I've been looking for that movie that could be crowned best of the decade. I looked and looked an looked. And finally, it arrives. If I could, I would give it 6 stars. I read the book before I saw the movie. For the first time ever, the movie was better.
Perfect acting, perfect cinematography, perfect music, perfect writing, perfect ending, perfect movie. If you do not like this movie, you are dead to me. |

| Fight Club - R | Quite Possibly the best move I have ever seen. Or, at least, one of them. Fight Club follows a depressed everyman who works an unfulfilling job in cubicle hell. He's bored with life, pissed with work, and lacking of sleep. But all of that changes when he meets Tyler Durden(Brad Pitt) on a buisness trip. Tyler leaves a good impression, advice on how to live, and his card. After the main character(whose name is never mentioned) returns to his apartment to find it burnt down, he has only one person to turn to. After discussing his dillema with Tyler over a beer, the pair begin to fight at Tyler's request. The the main character enjoys it, giving him a much-needed adrenaline rush. Tyler invites Norton to stay with him, who happily accepts. They begin a "Fight Club" using random contenders to fight. Norton envelops himself into Tylers society, and in doing so he is plunged into a world of Mischief, Mayhem, and Soap. And Random Chemical Burn. | March 24, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Daredevil - PG-13 | This is likely the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life. Terrible acting, sub-par script, and an overall awful performance. Get a good look at this movie--you probably won't see it again until they show the worst movies of the decade on TV. | March 24, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Hitman - R | I love the hitman game series. Some of the best video games ever. Now, when I heard of an adaption I was excited. The game is so cinematic, it would be easy to translate from game to movie. Then I heard about Vin Diesel playing him. My heart sunk. Vin is the Steven Seagel of the 21st century. It would never work, not him. When I heard he had stepped down, it sparked my excitment. I had seen timothy olyphant in other films, and I thought he was a great actor. Not perfect for 47, as the character is cold and menacing while Olyphant is baby-faced and charming. I entered the theater on opening day with mixed feelings, but left with a smile on my face and satisfaction of his portrayal. The story worked, Nika was hot(guilty as charged) and the action was brilliant. I could've done without the sword fight scene, but otherwise the gunplay was fulfilling. If you're a fan of the series, you must check it out, but if you're looking for an action film with a good story, this may not be for you. I loved this movie, but don't take my word for it. | March 23, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - R |
A savage journey into the heart of the american dream. I love Hunter S. Thompson, and after hearing of a movie adaption of his best story, I had mixed feelings. After the dissapointment of Where the Buffalo Roam, I was a bit scared to see another adaption of this classic tale. Excited to see Johnny Depp play the cynical character, I rented it.
It was like an acid trip. Except pleasent. It had me laughing every couple of seconds. Dukes insane ethics and monolouges colliding with Gonzos Questionable Advice create interesting and engaging black humor....or comic relief.....or comic humor or black relief or something in that area. Overall, it adds up to a strange satire of the American Dream. |

| Disturbia - PG-13 | Ever since I saw Shias performance in the greatest game ever played, I steered clear of any movie starring him. I fooled myself into watching Transformers, and I was once again dissapointed with the acting. After seeing the trailer for this movie, I promised myself I wouldn't watch it. But, I couldn't resist it. The plot just seemed so interesting. I had seen rear window and had thought what a re-imagining would be like. So, I gave it a shot. Whoa. Brilliant. Shia redeems himself with a great performance. The storyline....also awesome. There are so many of those moments where you want to enter the movie and keep the character from getting himself killed. However, in the middle of the movie, it goes from light hearted suspense to horrific slasher. Though, It still keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you love hitchcock, this is a no-brainer. If your looking for some sort of brutal slasher film, its also a good bet. Everything up until the kill is just gas. | March 22, 2008 | N/A |
