Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire - R The oscars are going to swallow this project whole, the performance levels are out standing. Lee Daniels is a director who makes a marvelous rebound from the gutter cinema hashed out four years ago (Shadowboxer). November 18, 2009

The Seventh Seal (Det Sjunde inseglet) - Unrated Ingmar Bergman was easily the most pretentious and yet philosophical artist behind a camera and here he delivers with so much theological backlashing that it is impossible to not come out somewhat enlightened - even if the poor exposure and pace makes you cringe (As a Bergman film should.) Oldboy - R Korea is easily the -it- of Cinema thrillers as of now.

This film is so sickly composed and the soundtrack is so naturally matched that from the opening scene on the roof to the final shots of the outside winter (no throwing daggers here) you are as tangled into the plot as as the lead character.

The ending is full of so much malice and contempt that I wouldn't be surprised if Park Chan Wook was a misanthropist at heart.

Stardust - PG-13 Campy? No doubt. Mediocre story and average computer graphics? No doubt. Full of over the top romances and acting? Indeed. Best fantasy film to be released since Lord of the Rings? Yes.

Stardust is such a beautiful and well acted film that would-be painful dialogue of the nature of love seem natural. The action sequences are actually kind of few but well made. It's an enjoyable movie and in a way, the perfect date movie (which is what I said for Knocked Up... odd).

P.S. When did Danes lose her eyebrows?

Knocked Up - R A fantastic blend of vulgarity and standard romance comedies, this is the ultimate date movie and one of the most guaranteed laugh films released in ages - surpassing the over hyped underwhelmer that was "The 40 Year Old Virgin" and landing into a category of sucess that is all on its own. Jason Segel is one of the most likeable character actors discovered in a lead role in quite some time and it'll certainly turn some heads from those who still justify why "Freaks and Geeks" was ever cancelled.

An instant classic commedy that all should see.

The Simpsons Movie - PG-13 Easily the most fun you'll have at the theatres this summer, the Simpsons delivers like a lenghty episode from the original seasons that contains great dialogue, a laugh a minute with few misses and a brilliant cast that has truly learned to develop its timing and chemistry over the years. It has its flaws however and doesn't lift the bar as far as animated adaptations go - afterall, the South Park film was in itself, better than the series ever was or will be, where as the Simpsons movie is 'just as good' as the show. Transformers - PG-13 Mindless action, fantastic computer graphics and a wonderful live cast make this a tolerable action film. Its faults however lie in the very Transformers themselves, who once in their autobot/decepticon units, are impossible to distinguish from each other and get lost in the swift frame changes and clumsy action sequences. Besides that, it delivers exactly what you expect from a giant robot movie. August 19, 2007

Love Actually - R The film itself is a charming romance played out like a montage from nearly every angle. In the end it demonstrates the range and ability of the emotion in question while of course causing some sequences of conflict and drama. The film starts and ends more or less on the same sweet note. It's a harmless and enjoyable viewing and doesn't try to be anything else, with a strong cast, a touching soundtrack and quick pacing. August 12, 2007

El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) - R One of the better films of 2006, this dark drama plays out like a merge between Schindler's List and Alice in Wonderland. A timeless tale turned into a nightmare in very adult proportions, both the set designs and the characters make this an unforgettable piece of fiction from Del Toro. This is the same director of Hellboy and Blade II. So far, it is easily his most mature work (even since his horror days) and an instant classic. One of the best films of 2006, but mildly overrated since its release - though it deserves some credit for opening a window of opportunity for foreign films in the mainstream market. July 23, 2007

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - PG-13 This is one of the worst movies of the year.

This is an awful film. I cannot be more precise or even begin to exagerate beyond this point. The acting is easily the most stale of the summer blockbuster batch, the plots and motives makes no sense. What makes it worse is that this is an adaptation that makes it a point to ostrocize those who haven't picked up the books. It is a giant, garbled mesh of lame humour, campy coincidences and back story that the director (David Yates) makes no effort to develop. Everything from Hagrid's brother to the actual background of Mrs.Umbridge is left to the dark and we even get lousy frame work for the death of an important character made rich by earlier installments.

This is the worst Harry Potter film yet and is also the same story that made me put down the Book after only three chapters. I am clueless as to why this franchise still exists - its made for children and has about the same entertainment level of a made for TV Disney flick.

Garbage. All of it. I can't think of a single redeeming factor. The special effects are the equivalent of cardboard cut outs and clear use of string.

Worthless.

Mysterious Skin - NC-17 This was the sleeper gem of 2005, a powerfully moving and haunting drama that touches on the after-effects of a two childlren caught in a world of sexuality and violence. Driven by Joseph Gordon-Levitt's incredible performance, it only further demonstrates that with every film he is becoming the absolute finest actor of his generation (just look at Brick or this year's The Lookout).

Fantastic, dark and unsettling in its realism, this was one of the best films of 2005, maybe of the decade.

Children of Men - R There is no dystopia in the history of cinema that has struck as close to home as that constructed in Alfonso Cuaron's haunting and emotionally headstrong Children of Men. Colourful tones that are reminiscent of both 1984 and Brave New World, alongside Pink Floyd's Animals, there is something enriching and envigorating after viewing this film. Catharsis is a natural process after tragedy, and it's no strange thing that you leave the desolate streets of post apocalyptic London with a sense of life, will and success. A brilliant picture, fantastic acting (including Clive Owen's best performance to date since Closer)and some of the most compelling camera work of the decade, this is the best film of 2006. The Dead Girl - R A film that desperately tries to string together 5 seperate stories of those affected by the death of this girl (or girls like her), it comes off as a cliche and sometimes badly paced mess. But past the awful opening story featuring Toni Collette as an incoherent, mumbling mysogynist, the stories are filled with touching sequences (the dead girl's mother finding she has a grand-daughter and taking her in) and powerful images (the undressing of an elder woman in front of a flaming bureau, filled with accesories of painful memories) that keep it worth recommending. Dissapointing but altogether a film that works even without any alleged audience (it's a fairly Hollywood indie flick). July 12, 2007

Live Free or Die Hard - PG-13 Big, dumb and full of explosions - this is an entertaining action film that die hard fans will not pass and popcorn flick audiences will eat it up.

Oh, and you might be waving the flag yourself by the time it's over.

Requiem for a Dream - R I've rewatched this film countless times. I've tried to make notes, describe scenes and tally up the shots. No amount of note taking of course, will expand on why I adore this haunting and disturbing drama that only spirals from the seemingly happy start. There is a discourse on the American Dream and the nature of tragedy, somewhere in the script of the original play, but mostly, I love purely for the experience. Tragic, lovely to watch and one of the most memorable scores in cinematic history, this is a perfect film. July 12, 2007

1408 - PG-13 Using old-school horror methods and avoiding the gimmicks of slasher-porn flicks (Saw, Hostel, etc), 1408 is a refreshing and at times saddening story of the demons we keep inside. Again, another film driven mostly by its key performer, John Cusack makes this a one man show worth the price of admission. July 9, 2007

Daddy's Little Girls - PG-13 That's the same name I gave my rape victim.

I didn't actually watch this - I hate Tyler Perry and his films. I just couldn't resist the title.

Hostel: Part II - R Torture porn films are taking over the market, as is the case with the Saw franchise, Wolf Creek, the Hills Have Eyes, and so on. So it was kind of pathetic to see this sequel try and fill this short lived flick with 'plot'. The uninteresting story and the dull lady figures who find themselves slashed, involved in botched murders and so forth don't lead anywhere and never become even remotely "scary". Thankfully this film failed in about every market on earth so we won't be seeing a third installment.

Oh, and the death scenes tend to be hilarious, regardless of anything. That's why I was kind enough to give it 2 stars! Anything that makes me laugh this much is worth something - even if it's a pipe bomb in its director's throat.

World Trade Center - PG-13 "Hey, remember the other day, when like, those buildings fell?"

Thanks Julie, that's about all I have to say about this recent Oliver Stone clunker. Melodrama and over acting that gives "Crash" a run for its money, this is just bad. Really bad.

Mr. Brooks - R Dane Cook, Demi Moore and Kevin Costner... if it weren't for the William Hurt role, I wouldn't be able to develop a single reason as to why anyone would actually want to see a film with this cast ensemble (Cook belongs on stage, not on screen). June 23, 2007
