A collection of heart wrenching stories, all loosely connected by fate. Not a traditionally moving movie, but moving none the less. And Tom Cruise shines as the swarmmy, slick, egomaniacal self help / sex guru.

Grey Gardens (1975,  PG)
Grey Gardens 4.5 Stars
I must say that the first time that I saw this film I was not prepared for it. I wasn't sure what to expect.

Technically it is a documentary, but to me it is almost like watching a stage play (if somehow Tennese Williams and David Lynch had ever colaborated on one). The way that these woman speak is at times very beautiful and surreal.

It is like a car crash in the sense that you are compelled to watch, even though you feel like you really shouldn't. It is uncomfortable at times, but it is also a very sad and heartwarming story of two "society dames" who got left behind.

I never get tired of watching it.

The Devils (1971,  R)
The Devils 4.5 Stars
This twisted look at religious manipulation, fervor and perversion is not for the faint of heart or easily offended. But is visually quite stunning and Vanessa Redgrave is amazing.

The French town of Loudon was on the verge of ruin and the last area not controled by the ominous Cardinal Richelieu when the handsome (and allegedly womanizing) new parish priest Father Grandier arrives.

He was initially very popular amongst the town folk and fought to prevent the power hungry Cardinal from taking over the town.

Almost immediately upon his introduction and snubbing of the (humpbacked) Mother Superior of the local cloistered convent of nuns, all hell breaks loose. LITERALLY!

The nuns begin a period of sexually explicite mass hysteria which is based around the priest coming to them at night (in the form of the devil) and having his way with them.

These events are a precurseor to our own Salem Witch trials (which were to happen about 50 years later) and while our trials involved the deaths of far more people,,,the events at Loudon are far more shocking and equally disturbing.

The Cardinal sends his "best men" in to get to the bottom of things and after several (public) exocrisms and inquisitions the Cardinal (thanks to the nuns) ultimately succeeds in causing the untimely death (by fire) of the priest who proclaimed his innocence until the end.

One of the most disturbing aspects of this story is the fact that the town of Loudon became a sort of tourist destination and was saved from ruin (but not from the Cardinal) by people coming (for years afterward) to witness the ongoing public exorcisms of the nuns who still claimed to be in the grip of "the devil" long after the priests demise.

An early example of religious fanatics using their faith as a political tool and as a way to persecute others.

I guess some things never really change.

As a huge Twin Peaks fan< i'll admit to being biased. But this film is everything that you would expect from David Lynch and more. There are some amazing performances here as well, but sadly I feel it was sort of brushed off by many as "that Twin Peaks movie" and didn't get the recognition that it deserves.

What can I say? Thankfully Tim Burton was able to keep his "finger prints" all over this little masterpiece, to spite the Disney label. And the soundtrack by Danny Elfman is absolutely perfect. You'll be humming at least one of the songs for the rest of the day after you watch this one.

This film is a lot of fun and has a cast of brilliant British actors.

Everyone is great, but especially fun is the cameo by Joanna Lumley as the Aunt with a passion for bustiers & bra's. And when I say "passion" I mean that she has a vertiable museum of them in her home and speaks about them each as if they were her lovers.

(Very) loosley based on 'The Wizard Of Oz', this Lynch classic is one wild ride.

Excellent performances by both Nick Cage (who I'm not a big fan of) and Laura Dern.

Though he doesn't have a lot of screen time...Willem Dafoe's 'Bobby Peru' has got to be one of the sleeziest characters in film history. His performance is guaranteed to keep you totaly riveted and slightly nauseous.

Not to be upstaged, Diane Ladd as "Lula's Mama" (Marietta Fortune) is an amazing study in parental psychosis.

The Wicker Man 3.5 Stars
This is the original film, NOT the remake.

The fact that it feels slightly 'dated' (1973) is part of the charm of this fairly intense psychological thriller.

When a deeply religious police Sargent is dispatched to an island off the cost of Scottland to investigate the report of a missing young girl, he finds himself questioning more then just the mysterious (and remarkably unhelpful pagan locals).

Brit Eklands seductive song and erotic dance number is AMAZING and begins Sargent Howie's decent into hell.

Baby Doll (1956,  R)
Baby Doll 3.5 Stars
A campy (and slightly disturbing) story of a young girl (Baby Doll) who is married off to an older man (Archie Lee)by her family, with the promise that he would provide for her and would not 'touch' her until she is 19 years old.

Well 'Baby Doll' is living up to her name and grasping on to her childhood (and he virginity) by living her life as a much younger girl would. She even sucks her thumb and sleeps in a little daybed that is very much like a baby crib.

As her husband struggles (by any means possible) to make a decent life for her and to finally lay claim to what is "rightfully his", things get compliocated by the arrival of another man into their life.

Ironically this other man is a business competitor who Archie Lee has sabotaged and who threby looks to Archir Lee for help. And in doing so discovers the treachery involved.

So this 'new man' would have never been thrust into their lives had Archie Lee been a more scrupulous s businessman (or human being for that matter).

All hell breaks loose as when this strange triangle is formed and Archie Lee fears someone might actually get their hands on his Baby Doll before he does.

Sounds a littel strange right? But it is a great character drama.

Who knew, Tennessee Williams and Elia Kazan would make such a great team?
