Best thriller ever! A very good story, a genius director and a fantastic cast made this movie unforgetable. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman were very good but Kevin Spacey comes in the end and steals the whole movie! He is the best actor ever. Seriously!
Argentinian director Fabián Bielinsky made two movies so far which are both fantastic. This is his first movie which is about the world of con. This is so original and enjoyable piece of cinema that you won't understand how the two hours have passed. There is a remake of it called "Criminal" which is exactly the same movie but with different actors and in english. Avoid the remake see the original, you won't regret.
The man uses the screen as his canvas painting himself as the lead, The Blind Swordsman. The blood pours out from the bodies like flowers of spring. And don't forget the environmental-instrumental music that fits right in there. Kitano puts all his skills on the table; writing, directing and acting in this action-drama-comedy. A must see.
It came out here today and I finally saw it. After reading 5 star-reviews from my friends and after all this hype, I can't say I'm disappointed. Batman is my favoritte super hero because he is more realistic than the others. And Mr. Nolan is the best thing that ever happenned to Batman. He made a great start with Batman Begins and when we thought it can't get better than that, it just did.
Everybody is talking about Heath Ledger's performance. Now some will say it's because he is dead but it sure isn't. It's one of the best performances I've ever seen on screen. His tone of voice, his use of body is just perfect. The man devoted himself to the role. And the director showed his craziness very well with his shaking or spinnig camera. Heath Ledger has become a legend with this role and he will be remembered years to come even if they don't give him an oscar.
I can't believe I finally saw this film! Beeing a big Coen Brothers fan, I've been looking forward to seeing this for a long long time. It will be out here on March 7 (all the shitty blockbusters are coming here the same time as USA but for some good movies like this we have to wait!!). There was a screening of this yesterday in a festival, the tickets were sold out in a couple of hours, so I couldn't find one but I went to the theatre anyway hoping to find one. There I saw lots of peole like me hoping to find a ticket and some of them were celebrities! By some kind of a small miracle I found one ticket and finally saw it and loved it, ofcourse..
As many of my flixster friends said, this is the return of the Coen Brothers after two relatively bad movies.
There is no witty dialogs in this one like other Coen masterpieces, this time they focus on the atmosphere and
the characterization.I always prefer the Coens to write their original script, because the power of their movies comes from the characters and dialogs they wrote, we all saw what happens when they are limited with some other medium in The Laydkillers, I haven't read the book but this story fits the Coens very well. As always they have great performances from the actors, Javier Bardem is incredible with the oscar in his pocket, and all the other actors were great. There is a strong wind behind the movie about the oscars, but I still cannot believe that the academy would give the "Best Movie" oscar to a film that has this kind of violence in it. I think they will once again give it to a drama, Atonement. But I really hope at least, they give the brothers the best director oscar, they really deserve it!
Beautiful is the word for it. This is the most "beautiful" movie I've ever seen. A little girl who has broken her arm while picking oranges meets a young actor in the hospital who has commited suicide after her girlfriend has left him for another man. He starts to tell a fantastic story to the girl and the girl comes to his bed everyday to listen to his story. But he wants something from the girl, she has to bring some pills to him if she wants to hear the rest of the story, because he can't walk and he needs pills to commit suicide once again. Will the joy of life in the little girl be enough for him to decide to keep on living? The acting is great, little girl is just adorable and she is putting on a show in this.
There is no word to describe how visually stunning this movie is. The scenes of the fantastic story is breathtaking, shot in 26 different countries in the most beautiful locations. The director waited 6 years after his first movie "The Cell" and in most of those years, he worked on this project, shot amazing scenes and created a great story to go with them, well, he must be proud, because this really is a masterpiece..
Persepolis tells us what happenned in Iran for the last few decades. But it does not do it like a history lesson, shows the events through the eyes of a young girl, it's naive and angled at some point but it's great!
It's an autobiographic story, very emotional, mostly sad, quite funny at times (how she described the changes in her body and the Eye of The Tiger cover was hilarious!), well it's the life of an extraordinary young girl seeking for her freedom.
The animation style is just perfect and fits the story very well. This is one of the best movies of 2007 and one of the best animations ever. Everyone should see it.
In "Barfly", Mickey Rourke was too handsome to play Bukowski, while watching The Wrestler 22 years later now, I couldn't help but think how his face looked very much like Bukowski. Now he has what it takes to be Bukowski! (thanks to his boxing career). This is the role of his life here. What a fantastic performance. He kinda came back with "Sin City" but this one shows he is staying this time. Remake of "13", "Sin city 2" and "Iron Man 2" are next. Can't wait to see more of him.
The movie? Oh it's Aronofsky, you know it's great! His early masterpieces were too independent or too hardcore for Oscars or maybe too complex. This one was more mainstream and everybody thought maybe this time but the academy ignored him again. Anyway, Venice gave the man the credit he deserves. Wonderful film, incredible acting (also from Marisa Tomei). A must see.
Daigo, a young cellist, moves to his hometown after their orchestra is dissolved. He applies for a job in a company which he thought was a travel agency. Yes, they help people travel but to another life. The cellist is now the person who prapares dead bodies for their final journey. Meanwhile he struggles with the thought of his father who left him when he was 6 and his wife who didn't like his new job.
Biggest surprise of last year fully deserves its oscar. Interesting story nicely told, use of music and acting is great, bright colors by contrast with the theme are used very well. Wonderful ending while putting a smile on your face, may cause a few drops of tears. Fantastic movie.
I had to see this one after loving the director's previous movie "Myrin". I loved this one even more! Great script and characters, fantastic performances from the actors and excellent directing by Baltasar Kormákur who is slowly making his way to my favoritte list.
The movie takes place in a beautiful Icelandic island. The director once more uses the location perfectly and makes it one of the characters. A middle aged professor comes to this little island to save his troubled marriage but he fails to do it. He meets one of his students on the island and they decide to marry even though the girl is 18 years younger.
A very dark comedy full of colourful characters and another great movie coming from cold and beautiful Iceland.
I loved the first one and thought it was one of the best romantic movies ever made and I think this one is even better. I promised myself to see this one exactly 6 months after the first movie, but looking at the date of my flixter rating now, I see that it has been a year and 22 days, I couldn't keep my promise like they couldn't keep in the movie, I'm just glad I didn't wait for 9 years.
As Celine said "Reality and love are almost contradictory". Not in this movie! It's realstic and romantic at the same time. Too good to be true.
Danny Boyle has done it again! It takes some real balls to make a movie like this. When he finds something original, he goes for it, doesn't matter which genre, location, language it is. This movie has a moving story, great directing and acting and most importantly a great editing. Yeah some parts are hard to believe but faily tales are supposed to be like this right? And I suppose that "live ask a friend" mistake was necessary for the story.
Anyway, the movie lived up the hype for me and it's the best movie of the year so far. I watched the first half of the movie, then watched the Golden Globe Awards and went back and finished the movie :) It was interesting to see it swept all the awards. And if it doesn't win the Best Movie Oscar, I blame the dancing scene at the end. I don't say I didn't like the scene but I will blame it :)
Just saw it for the third time and it got better, again. I guess you can say that for almost every Coen Bros movie, maybe we should give Ladykillers and Intolarable Cruelty one more chance, they might also get better, well they can't get any worse. This one shows the brother's great skill in storytelling, all the actors are fantastic and the soundtrack is just gold. It may be my favoritte soundtrack of all time.
Slow-paced but delicious! It's like reading a novel and a good one! The movie has no beginning or an end. It's like a chapter of life. We are witnessing a few characters' crossing paths but it doesn't try to say too much. Great script by Paul Auster, good direction by Wayne Wang, fantastic cast(each one of them) and a wonderful Tom Waits song at the end. Just rent it, sit back and enjoy...
Haneke is disturbing, shocking and thought provoking as ever. His long takes are so powerful, they pull you in the movie. This movie has one of the most shocking scenes I've ever seen. It's scary because it's real, it's real because the director uses the camera and the actors very well. The suicide scene and the elevator scene are just flawless.
Haneke takes an upper-class family again, makes them cry and wipes the make up off of their faces. Unlike his "Funny Games" the terror source in here is mysterious and the victim has actually done something to deserve it. Or has he? And did everybody get what they deserved? Well, Cache is not a fun movie to watch, it's disturbing, it asks you questions and wants you to answer them. Are you scared?
I was meaning to see this movie for a long time, I finally saw it and loved it! The movie is perfectly told in three parts, three connecting stories about love and hate and the war in the background. We have seen some other movies recently trying to
tell the same stories, showing people how bad racism and discrimination is, but some
of them (if I must name one, Crash) made the mistake of poking the things in our eyes
and telling us how we must feel. Before the Rain doesn't tell us how to feel, it's trying to show us how the characters feel and lets us figure out what is right and what is wrong.
Alexander is a very interesting character played perfectly by Rade Serbedzija as the
successful photographer living in London, in need of returning home, Macedonia, whatever the situation is there. There are lots of good things to say about the film, from the direction to the acting but I have to say the editing is just perfect, reminding
a circle like the director pointed out in a few scenes.
I think we are trying to look at the world with our pink glasses, trying to avoid the bad things and enjoy it the most, but right now even the pink glasses are not enough not to see how grey the world has become, just like the sky before the rain..
So, popcorn lovers, beware, this is not for you, this is not a "feel yourself good" movie,
in fact this is a "feel yourself like shit" movie and that's how we must feel.
I was lucky enough to catch this little gem in the festival. Our guy is in depression for 3 months after being dumped by his girlfriend, just trying to stay alive, his friends insist that he must put an add in this dating web site, and it's new years eve and he doesn't want to be alone and he does it. Then he meets this girl who just dumped her boyfriend who was cheating on her. This movie shows us their unforgetable date while saying the things it wants to say about love, relationships and all the things involved. Very well paced, quite funny at times, great dialogs and acting and editing.
The young director, Alex Holdridge, was present at the screening and he answered some questions after the movie. He said it costed 25.000 dollars to do this, and the apartment used was his old apartment, most of the actors were his friends, and the story is based on true events, his life..
Well, this low budget movie was better than most of the romance-comedies I've ever seen and it was good to see one that beautifully shot in black and white for a change, after all those pinky and vivid ones that all ends with a stupid happy ending.
Just saw this in the festival and loved it! This is a documentary about the alternative rock band from Iceland, Sigur Ros. It's also a documentary about Iceland itself. The band comes back from the world tour of their last album and decides to give unannounced concerts all over Iceland. The performances are free and performed in the most strange places, people just show up and enjoy the music, for the band, it's a way to pay tiribute to the society that made them Sigur Ros. The movie is pleasant both for your eyes and ears. Iceland looks like a giant village full of beautiful people and it makes me wanna live there!
Sigur Ros got some attention to their music after one of their song was used in the soundtrack of Vanilla Sky. They have a quite number of fans all over the world now and they deserve it.
This film reminded me how it's important to hold on to the things that makes you who you are, keep your home and country as the places you love before they turn into just bricks and land, and keep yourself as human before the little monster in you takes the control.
So see this movie if you want to discover this unique band and witness the beauty of the little country called Iceland.
This is my favoritte Turkish movie. If Coen brothers were Turkish and shoot a movie in Turkey, this would be it. It's a dark comedy with lots of interesting characters and a very good script. I watched this on TV knowing nothing about it and absolutely loved it. Hilarious.
Martin McDonagh writes and directs his first movie and the man has skills for both. This is a very good dark comedy, with great dialogs, good acting and direction. The city is surely one of the lead actors here and a good one. The movie will definitely make you want to see Brugges.
Colin Farrell.. Well, I used to find him irritating, used to think that he got to be an actor because he could make his eyebrows like that. Two clumsy murderer roles (here and in Cassandra's Dream) changed my mind. Still not a big fan but now I can stand him.
"Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like TOTTENHAM." Hilarious!! Well it looks like they are going to hell this year!.
Colourful, dramatic and funny musical taking place in Turkish music industy. The director takes this story which was based on true events and turns it into a fairy tale with great characters and very interesting cameos.
This movie was on top of my must see list and my expectations went higher and higher after all the positive reviews. I finally saw it and my high expectations are met quite easily.
It's the story of a little boy who gets bullied at school and the little girl who lives next door. The movie focuses on their relationship like any other coming of age movie. The only differance is that the girl is a vampire! She is twelve for a long time now..
Original piece of cinema, really refreshing. The movie manages to be dark and beautiful and emotional and creepy and gory at the same time without trying hard. Very few movies made me want to read the book it's made of and this is one of them.
Hilarious French movie with some really memorable scenes. I didn't know French comedy could get this good. Goofy characters, the situations they put themselves into and the ways they react are too funny. The movie mainly takes place in an apartment but it's not a problem because the script is so good and full of surprises, the acting is electric and the movie is quite short. I'm sure if I knew French, I could enjoy the movie even more. I can easily say this is one of the best comedies I've ever seen..
