Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005,  PG-13)
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
Certainly did heaps better than the previous 2 movies. I found I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Wont beat the originals though.
2
Jarhead (2005,  R)
Jarhead
Im not usually one for war-themed movies, but this one is certainly not your usual war movie. This movie tells us the inside story of war from the soldiers' point of view. Jake Gyllenhaal once again excels in this gripping and at times, emotional account of the Iraq war.
3
In Her Shoes (2005,  PG-13)
In Her Shoes
Toni and Cameron team up in this charming comedy about sibling rivary. Great atmosphere, and the appearance of Shirley Maclaine helps the movie. Another great career choice for Toni.
4
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
Not quite as good, but still up there with the best. Brings us the adventure and thrills like before.
5
The Stepford Wives (2004,  PG-13)
The Stepford Wives
Just loved it!! Ensemble cast makes this movie a fun experience.
6
Gladiator (2000,  R)
Gladiator
Possibly one of Russell Crowe's crowning glories. An epic worthy of the hype.
7
High Fidelity (2000,  R)
High Fidelity
I connected with the lead character in so many ways, High Fidelity is about music, relationships, work, and making lists!! John Cusack is simply cuddly!!
8
Scary Movie (2000,  R)
Scary Movie
The whole franchise on the spoof thing is going well these days. The first of the 4 is a great laugh. Each instalment made fun of the current movies. Just a lot of fun.
9
Bruce Almighty (2003,  PG-13)
Bruce Almighty
Another typical Jim Carrey movie. Has its moments. Jim has done better than this.
10
The Truman Show (1998,  PG)
The Truman Show
One of Carrey's better moves. In this case, Carrey has been reigned in a little, and it certainly helps. Quite a touching performance, and a brilliant outcome.
11
American Pie (1999,  R)
American Pie
Evidence of the saying "the original is always best". Witty take on the teen sexual angst and connected woes. The ensemble cast all pitch in to make an enjoyable time.
12
Road Trip (2000,  R)
Road Trip
An engrossing, sweet natured comedy that pushes the envelope just enough without being annoying. Lovable and funny.
13
Wedding Crashers (2005,  R)
Wedding Crashers
Enjoyable enough. Owen and Vince seem to have a nice chemistry that makes this movie work. It loses points because of the annoying Will Ferrel. Great to see Christopher Walken getting into the fun of things and enjoying himself here.
14
A View to a Kill (1985,  PG)
A View to a Kill
A great addition to the Bond collection.
Great appearance from Grace Jones as May Day. One of the best theme songs in Duran Duran.
15
The World's Fastest Indian (2005,  PG-13)
The World's Fastest Indian
A superbly charming well paced movie. The story is allowed to unfold at its own rate, you never feel rushed, and Anthony Hopkins is simply perfect. Emotionally uplifting, scenically breathtaking, and just a great movie all round. Worth the entry fee!
16
The Chumscrubber (2005,  R)
The Chumscrubber
Interesting movie...thought provoking, and rather unsettling in places. Still was enjoyable, the ensemble cast work well together. Jamie Bell is developing as an actor, and a good vehicle for him to get his start in Hollywood.
17
Save the Last Dance (2001,  PG-13)
Save the Last Dance
Not bad...I enjoyed this movie to a point. Well put together, and flowed nicely enough. Julia Stiles played her role quite perfectly, without too much sugarine. Gritty and down to earth.
18
Spider-Man (2002,  PG-13)
Spider-Man
Hmm.. yeah ok...not too bad. We just seem to be getting a glut of this comic-to-movie thing happening, I tend to get a little desensitised to it. Enjoyable enough.
19
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005,  PG)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Great remake of the original TV series, with a few differences. Still has the wit and intelligence, and the classic lines are all there. A good escape!!
20
White Oleander (2002,  PG-13)
White Oleander
Great movie...the leads all are perfect in their roles. A rather sad tale of a very dysfunctional mother & daughter, and the consquences life deals.
21
Gattaca (1997,  PG-13)
Gattaca
This is a totally well rounded movie. Everything about is put together right, with the top line actors (Ethan Hawke and Jude Law are excellent), and smart script and cinematography. Worth tracking down.
22
Death Becomes Her (1992,  PG-13)
Death Becomes Her
Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn team up nicely here for a good fun comedy. Don't expect greatness, but do expect a good time. This does become a little cliched and corny, but Meryl and Goldie make it a good movie. Good to see Bruce doing something other than his Die Hard shtick.
23
Thelma & Louise (1991,  R)
Thelma & Louise
Not your typical road buddy movie here. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis make a perfect pair here as the bored housewives who leave their old life behind and take off on the adventure of a lifetime. They encounter danger along the way, and also court it!! Watch out for a brief appearance of the hunky Brad Pitt. Great adventure, great screenplay, and the leads shine in their roles. Worth every penny.
24
Galaxy Quest (1999,  PG)
Galaxy Quest
A fun movie to watch, another sci fi spoof that pokes gentle fun at the whole Trek thing. The three leads are a joy to watch as they work well together, and seem to enjoy what they are doing. Alan Rickman's witty and sarcastic lines are a killer, Sigourney play's the not so bimbo character well, and Tim Allen is perfect in the "Captain Kirk" type role. The story has heart, which also helps the movie along.
25
Cry Baby (1990,  PG-13)
Cry Baby
Johnny Depp has always made good choices for his movies, and this is one of his best early ones. John Waters has a knack for making camp, over the top flicks, and this doesnt disappoint.
26
Trainspotting (1996,  R)
Trainspotting
Trippy and at times confronting, this seedy look at a group of "friends" who live their lives at a breakneck pace, and damn the consequences. A smart bit of acting from Ewan McGregor, apparently he lost a lot of weight for the role of Renton.
27
Edward Scissorhands (1990,  PG-13)
Edward Scissorhands
Another fabulous entry with Johnny Depp. Creepy, but with a heart. Its hard to believe this is almost 20 years old!!!!
28
The Italian (Italianetz) (2007,  PG-13)
The Italian (Italianetz)
Not entirely brilliant, but certainly still entertaining enough. It fell a little flat towards the end, but the story was interesting enough to keep you watching.
Seeing the real Russia was the winning aspect here.
29
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! (1978,  PG)
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!
Very funny spoof horror movie, taking off movies like The Blob and generally things that were chemically enhanced. Very silly, but enjoyable!!!!
30
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007,  PG-13)
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
The best yet, this instalment sees Harry fighting all sorts of troubles, and you really feel his pain and anguish. There is an inherent sadness running through the film, but this is exactly what you feel when reading the book, so it is a testament to the film makers for making this so close to the book. Very good indeed.
31
Mr. Bean's Holiday (2007,  G)
Mr. Bean's Holiday
This fares better than the previous outing, and is less scmaltzy and pandering to an American audience. Still not wonderful, but enjoyable nonetheless. A cutesy ending, everything all tied up nicely.
32
Into the Wild (2007,  R)
Into the Wild
Great personal story about a young man who goes on a journey of discovery, only to end in tragedy. Brilliant cinematography, and the lead actor Emile Hirsch does a wonderful job as Chris McCandless. I would have to take a point off for the fact that Chris brought heartache to his family by doing what he did, even if his parents weren't the best they could be. He also left his sister to deal with things which isnt the most noble thing to do, but nonetheless, a great film which invites discussion. Well made and delivered.
33
The Kite Runner (2008,  PG-13)
The Kite Runner
An astoundingly honest and emotional account of two boys growing up in Afghanistan, and the changes that have come about in the country, the political uprising and violence. One of the boys goes back years later to rescue the son of the other one (now dead) from the turmoil that is happening. Great story, terrific cinematography, great acting, especially from the 2 young boys.
34
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008,  R)
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Fairly entertaining, not blisteringly funny, but has its moments. The writers/directors of 40 Yr Old Virgin head for the rom-com genre with gusto and the result is a good fun romp. All the cast work well together and make the movie hold together nicely. Leave the brain at home and enjoy the ride.
35
Iron Man (2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
This is a superhero movie with a lot of heart and one that also has a good solid cast, and a strong storyline to carry it through. Downey Jr plays a likeable hero, and Jeff Bridges the friend who turns out to be the villain of the story. Gwynneth Paltrow is suitable as the bookish yet charming Pepper. The special effects are amazing, and the action is well paced without being too overblown. Damn near perfect!!
36
Made of Honor (2008,  PG-13)
Made of Honor
Reasonably good fun and a good laugh. Patrick Dempsey makes a pretty good leading man if not a little wooden, but great fun nonetheless. Some funny one liners, and the support cast all make it worth the entry price.
37
Hancock (2008,  PG-13)
Hancock
Funny and sometimes touching retelling of the "fallen superhero" theme, with Will Smith hamming it up in the title role, adding his own warmhearted charm for good measure. Some great action sequences, and the support cast all doing their bit to bring a funny and uplifting superhero tale. Great stuff...I enoyed this immensely.
38
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008,  PG)
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Fitting follow up to the first instalment of the Narnia franchise. Its another 1000 years on in Narnia, only a year later for the children...and war is raging in the magical land. Massive battle scenes, and lots of lessons to be learnt once more. A great story and an enjoyable 2 and a half hours.
39
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008,  PG-13)
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Doesnt quite meet the standards of the forst two, but still is alot of fun. Australia's Luke Ford joins the cast as The O'Connell's son Alex. Brendan Fraser is still the personable hero, one you'd like to wrap up and take home with you...and the action is all there. I felt there was something not quite gelling with this one, however, I still enjoyed the ride!!
40
Choke (2008,  R)
Choke
Great piece of work this one, very complex and layered. I had fun with this one, also quite a sad story underlying the comedy. Well structured, all roles well played, especially Sam Rockwell and Angelica Houston. Good stuff!!
41
The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008,  PG-13)
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Terrific remake of the 1950's sci fi classic. The original message of peace has been changed to a message of how we are treating the planet...and it works well. Keanu is good, as is Jennifer Connelly (remembering her in Labyrinth all those years ago!!), and a plethora of supporting roles including Kathy Bates. Great special effects and photography. A great movie all in all.
42
Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans (2009,  R)
Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans
I enjoyed this despite not seeing the previous ones. My only quibble is that is very dark (lightwise) and some scenes are a little confused because of that. Nonetheless a solid Vampire/werewolf thriller/action movie that holds its own.
43
Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008,  R)
Zack and Miri Make a Porno
A charming little comedy about two best friends trying to make ends meet by making a porno and becoming an item in the process, and making a few freaky freinds along the way. Well paced and some nice oneliners, the movie never slackens, and keeps us entertained the whole way.
44
The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009,  PG-13)
The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
A variation on the "Scrooge" tale where a man is visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. The premise works well for this, and Matthew McConaughey keeps the movie going at a pleasant pace. Not brilliant, but enjoyable nonetheless.
45
The Darjeeling Limited (2007,  R)
The Darjeeling Limited
Reasonably entertaining...due to the 3 main stars. Slightly quirky and a slow burner, but the ending is worthy of the journey. Loved it.
46
Grosse Pointe Blank (1997,  R)
Grosse Pointe Blank
I have always loved John Cusack., and this is another one of my faves. This is a witty, action/romance with plenty going for it. Minnie Driver is fantatstic as the school friend/love interest, and Dan Aykroyd makes a great appearance as the opposing spy team. Great fun.
47
Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009,  PG)
Confessions of a Shopaholic
Rather ditzy and fun, this doesnt tax the brain, just sit back enjoy the ride. Isla Fisher does a nice job as the shopaholic with a heart. The subplots are not given much airtime...but still this is a reasonably fun flick.
48
The Replacements (2000,  PG-13)
The Replacements
A great little fun flick about doing things for the love of it, not for money. Keanu is great here, and the ensemble cast work well together. The boys win the game against all adversity, and Keanu wins the girl as well!!
49
The Young Victoria (2009,  PG)
The Young Victoria
Fabulous dramatization of Queen Victoria's younger days. Dramatic and well paced, and well acted by all accounts. This is a very enjoyable movie...and I now have a different view of how Queen Victoria really was in life. Very educating indeed!!
50
Zombieland (2009,  R)
Zombieland
Absolutely piss-in-your-pants, laugh-a-minute funny, with a decent story with a big chunk of heartiness in it. Blindingly fast dialogue and witty repartee, with a very funny self effacing cameo from Bill Murray. Woody Harrelson has never looked so hunky, and Jesse Eisenberg brings some heart to his Columbus. The two girls are fabulous, including a very grown up Abigail Breslin. Worth the entry fee just for the Bill Murray cameo alone!!
