This is my second favorite film from 2007. George Clooney's broken and melancholy character gets pushed to his limits in this crime drama wrapped in a morals lesson. Tilda Swinton is mesmerizing.
This was my favorite movie from 2007. It is violent, ambiguous, and brimming with meaning. The characters are manifestations of greed, aging, and relentlessness. The pacing is perfect, as well as the dreadful "silence" that serves as the primary sound track. Perfection!
Fargo is a simple but forceful movie about bad ideas turning worse by the minute. Aside from the fanciful accents, the movie features a wood chipper, a pissed off American Indian, and a bird painter. This is a great murder story, and it's "true."
Man on Fire is a "revenge" movie, and it's electric! Denzel plays a weary man down on his luck. He gets a job as a body guard to a delightful little girl (played by Dakota Fanning). Unfortunately, Fanning's character gets kidnapped. He vows that he's going to kill anyone who profited from this, and boy does he ever. Despite the action, there is high emotion, and this is easily one of my favorite films from 2007.
Tom Cruise gives a tremendous performance as the younger brother who tries to "take custody" of his autistic (though "highly functioning") older brother, played by Dustin Hoffman. Both show their incredible acting chops. Stellar!
This is a great movie, full of action, twists, and just enough romance to mellow out the intensity. The movie's time travel premise definitely harkens "The Terminator" and "Primer", but it's done very well. Tony Scott directed a winner here. Awesome!
Paul Thomas Anderson's movie showcases the quiet Philip Baker Hall. It's a "father and son" picture, with a hard edge to it. OK, a very hard edge. Splendid!
A long time ago, I saw this in the theater. I was the tender age of 10 years old. The movie opened up feelings of excitement and adventure that carries me to this day. I knew then that it would be an epic. This is a monumental movie. See it if you haven't.
This is the inspiring story about Burt Munro and his dream to be the fastest man on a motorcycle (in his case, a classic Indian motorcycle from the 20s). He has to go to the Bonneville Salt Flats to prove this to himself, and the movie charts his adventure from New Zeland to Utah. This is a delightful story about the importance of tenacity when chasing a dream.
This is my favorite Michael Mann film. The movie features Al Pacino and Russell Crowe, going head to head against big tobacco, and their own demons. Great atmosphere.
This is a stellar movie, full of quiet humor and wise observations about what constitutes a full life. The main character breaks "the wall" and tries to reach the narrating "voice over", providing a neat and satisfying plot device. Super super movie.
One of the signature movies in Bill Murray's career. The movie is endearing, and its message of living your life well is told superbly. An absolute favorite!
One of the best sports movies, and certainly the best at depicting the high speed action that is ice hockey. Marvelous and inspiring. Kurt Russell is a thrill to watch. Patricia Clarkson is marvelous.
