Owning Mahowny - R Set in Toronto, based in the 80s and based on a true-story, this is a real harrowing tale of gambling addiction and how it can really turn an average person into a complete monster. The real life Molony apparently embezzled over $10 million before he was caught. May 23, 2009

One Week - Unrated What could have been a schmaltzy MOW about a person dying of cancer, actually turned out to be a decent little film. Part man versus disease, part Canadian travelogue, it's a testament to Pacey's acting that this film stands above what it could have been.

The narration by Campbell Scott also hit the right note.

Cry Baby - PG-13 Not as classic a John Waters film as others, but still quite fun and watchable. Has been said it's his musical, which always opens the door to the West End, like with Hairspray.

For Johnny Depp, who was just out of Jump Street, the role was quite a leap for him, even if he had to lipsync all those songs.

Cool film, but the story has massive plot holes, so just watch for the fun of it, not for any social commentary.

The Intruder (The Stranger) - PG-13 a low budget racial examination done by Roger Corman.

The tales of the shoot are almost as interesting as the film itself.

Shatner, unfortunately, is such a ham in this. Even the part where he delivers his big speech, I was completely distracted by his odd robotic arm movements.

My Dinner with Andre - Unrated fantastic suspension of disbelief. Assumed to be shot in real time in a real restaurant. Actually filmed over a series of weeks, on a set.

While it's two hours of Gregory talking to Shawn, it's an amazing view into the world of these two people - as if you're eavesdropping on their conversation. Very cool.

Tropic Thunder - R interesting premise of actors in a war film not realising the situation they're in is real.

Robert Downey Jr FTW. Without him, this film would not have been all that good.

Quantum of Solace - PG-13 I used to be a HUGE fan of the bond franchise, to the extent that I played the RPG, enjoyed all the novels, etc.

Maybe as I get older my movie tastes have changed but with each new movie it feels less and less bond and more and more set pieces and chances tied together with a very thin and ropey Bond "script" overlaying it.

Quantum is no different. A car chase, a chase on foot, even a chase in a plane. It all got a little samey after a while.

Apocalypto - R pretty cool film, if not rather violent. At the end of the day it's a chase romance film, even though a load of people died along the way. April 12, 2009

Bolt - PG the usual animation faire - images for the kids, story for the adults. Bolt is a dog on a top TV series who thinks his TV adventures are real. When he gets out to the real world, he fast finds out that his TV persona can't keep him safe. April 4, 2009

My Name Is Bruce - R Not bad but not terrific either. BC plays a comedically nasty version of himself (funniest part of the film) and tries to help a small town out. Some funny injokes but not much else March 29, 2009

Ghost Town - PG-13 Quirky rom com but gervais is acting as gervais and a couple scenes were a little too close to the office I was expecting a blank look to the camera. March 29, 2009

The X-Files: I Want to Believe (The X Files 2) - PG-13 I read the reviews, and people told me but like the title i had to see it for myself because I wanted to believe.

This wasn't a bad movie, it was boring two hour episode of the TV show. There were a few plot leaps - like Scully not really having much to do with Mulder in one scene, then being in bed with him in another.

The whole mystique of the series - aliens, and the unexplained - really took a back seat in this flick to a rather pedantic tale that had a little too much to coincidence with Scully's stem cell research.

I would not recommend this to anyone, and I guess the series is dying on a dud.

It was nice to see Hank Moody and Lou Ashby in a film together, but I've preferred their pairing in Californication lately.
