Man of the Year - PG-13 TV comedian becomes president-elect, although because of a computer glitch he isn't.

Decently acted, and an interesting take on the US electoral system. As always Walken is a treat.

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead - R Bit of a Get Carter rip off from... the man who brought us Get Carter, Mike Hodges. Clive Owen is an ex-gangster, brought back to the life he left to find out why his brother killed himself.

The reason why, when we discover it, is really really lame all thanks to Malcolm McDowell and the worst reasoning ever.

Pineapple Express - R A worthy pisstake of cop, buddy films, etc. in the vein of Hot Fuzz. They manage to take i to the nth degree making light of things like characters that are obviously injured so bad they should be dead, not fighting and being able to learn gun handing in 5 easy minutes.

Decent comedy and the homoerotic overtones were very overtly Top Gun ("I love you man! I want to be inside you!")

Somersault - Unrated a random journey into the confusing realm of if it's sex, it must be love. Getting people to strip off and do things with you is NOT love.

The character of Joe is quite odd, as he tries to figure out what he wants ...

The Good Night - R This had a very European art-house feel to it, even though it stars some of Hollywood's (and Britain's) heavyweight actors.

Really good turn by Martin Freeman, who is danger of becoming typecast in the Arthur Dent "oppressed man" role. Simon Pegg, again is a treat to watch as his life and the veneer he portrays both seem to melt in front of us.

Joy Division - R Great documentary about Joy Division, although not many new truths were revealed. Grant Gee managed to tell the story of the rise of Joy Division, mirroriing the re-emerging of the North as a musical and cultural mecca, with interviews from those who were there at the time.

Glad I waited for the DVD, as there were 48 extra interview snippets as extras. Hooky's take on U2 was an interesting insight.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters - PG-13 This documentary erked my to my very core. There are geeks and nerds that adhere to cool things, then there's ones that sell chicken wing hot sauce and strut around like Elvis because they got a high score on Donkey Kong in 1982.

The level of self delusion in this film is amazing. Poor Steve Wiebe was a loser at almost everything and wanted to be the best at Donkey Kong and opened a whole can of worms that would be better off sealed and buried underground.

Some of the people in this film take the world of video games WAY too seriously, at times comparing the rivalries in the film to actual historical rivalries - with no hint of irony or comedy at all.

ouch!

Dan in Real Life - PG-13 one of those right time right place films. it just hit me quite hard.

it's an utterly depressing reality where a widower tries to hide the feelings he has for his brother's girlfriend and completely fails.

There's also the trying to deal with being a single dad to three daughters sub-plot that can resonate with fathers.

Bee Movie - PG Seinfeld as someone other than Seinfeld. Decent film, very bright and colourful and hilariously far-fetched premise that has some lasting ramifications in a world where the bees are actually on the decline. August 26, 2008

Cloverfield - PG-13 great handy-cam film. Made you really feel like you were there. A bit like Blair Witch but much better.

The only thing I questioned was the rolling of the Statue of Liberty head down the road. Of all the roads in Manhattan it rolled down our protagonists'? And it didn't look big enough.

Flood - Unrated Smacking of a made for TV film, this was a nice antedote to the usual American overblown disaster film that is quite popular.

There's a love story and an estranged parent story that you take or leave. I was quite intrigued about how possible the disaster actually was (the actual disaster is apparently quite close to what will happen when the polar ice caps melt).

He Was A Quiet Man - Unrated playing against type Christian Slater is really quite good in this filck about the usual Milton style office drone who says little and then eventually goes postal.

Living in his own reality, you're never sure what's real and what isn't.

Oliver! - G I hate musicals.

However, there were some good tunes in this. I was interested to see the depiction of Victorian London, but truly believe that without the songs this would have made a more palatable length film.

At least now I know the story.

The Good Shepherd - R At 160 minutes, this is about 100 minutes longer than it needed to be to tell the story it did.

I found myself enjoying it to a certain point, but it really was let down by any real lack of plot, apart from Matt Damon's character's rise through the ranks of the CIA.
