About Me
I am a nerd in many aspects of life. In this case, film. Huge film buff. Thanks, mostly in part, to two of my best friends, Riley and Brian. I admit, I used to love films like Bring it On or Save the Last Dance. Mind you, I still love them and I always will. But I have now had the priviledge of being introduced to films like Shawshank, Magnolia, Requiem, Raging Bull, Waking Life, and so on and so forth. I actually use this site to rate movies, talk about movies and basically, just love movies. I'm not using it as a way to meet people. I can do that in real life. So when some dude who's favorite movie is Saw or The Fast and The Furious private messages me, saying something like "ooh, baby you're so fine. wanna chat on msn?? my addy is somedouchebag@hotmail.com", then no. No I do not wish to further our encounter. And furthermore, if that little score that tells you how alike we are in our taste in movies, isn't over 60, please for the love of all things holy, DO NOT ADD ME. I dont care what the idiot from San Jose who digs Vin Diesel flicks has to say about a Scorsese picture. Thank you.
In other news, I am also really into music and photography. I am currently attending the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. I am taking Journalism Arts. Next year I plan to major in Photojournalism.
I have like 43278 favorite bands. Some, which I will share with you are: The Beatles, Radiohead, Broken Social Scene, Stars, Tegan and Sara, Metric, Death From Above 1979, Architecture in Helsinki, Ingrid Michaelson, Kate Havnevik, Roisin Murphy, Belle and Sebastian, Joshua Radin, Ray Lamontagne, Joe Purdy, Damien Rice, Elliott Smith, Iron and Wine, Wintersleep, Great Lake Swimmers, Lets Go Sailing, Regina Spektor, Imogen Heap, Spoon, Tokyo Police Club, Eagles of Death Metal, Modest Mouse, LCD Soundsystem, The Kooks, The Dears, The New Pornographers, Mother Mother, Vampire Weekend, Kings of Leon, Bright Eyes, Two Gallants, The Black Keys, We are Scientists, The Libertines, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, Does It Offend You, Yeah?, Fiery Furnaces, The Magnetic Fields, The Mountain Goats, The Weepies, Queens of the Stone Age, Kaleem Khan, I'm From Barcelona, Jordan Klassen, Chad VanGaalen, Colin Hay, The Cure, Joy Division, Joseph Arthur, The Dandy Warhols, Camera Obscura, Matt White Band, Andrew Bird, Elliot Brood, The Streets, She Wants Revenge, The Clash, The Ramones, The Cure, Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, Rancid, The Distillers, Black Flag, Dropkick Murphys, and so on and so forth.
The rest, my friends, is relative.

And Mark Whalberg gets the final word. Fuckin rights. Anyway, so so so so so so good. Very very well done, Scorcese. Awesome cast, flawless performances, great soundtrack. I mean, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Dropkick Murphys??? What more can you ask for. So many parts of this film made me mad. Like when they threw Martin Sheen off the roof. I was so pissed. And then at the end when everyone gets shot... I said "fuck" so much in those two or three minutes. Also, not many films get twenty minutes into it before they even show you the title of the film. Definitely one of the best films I've seen this year. Wow. Gotta buy this one.
Magnolia 2. Magnolia R 5.0 Stars
Just simply amazing. Fan-freakin-tastic performances by all parties. Tom Cruise has one of the most powerful scenes in the film, and brought me to tears. Horribly depressing at times, but in a beautiful way. Great soundtrack as well. A must see for everyone. Just make sure you set aside three hours.
Trainspotting 3. Trainspotting R 5.0 Stars
Firstly, very well acted. Its hard to create a film which can delight you, disgust you, make you laugh, make you cry, and make you think. But this movie did just that for me. Especially the crying part. Its intriguing not only mentally but also visually. Danny Boyle is a genious.
Requiem for a Dream 4. Requiem for a Dream R 5.0 Stars
one of my top 5 faves. depressing but oh so good very trippy visionary tricks so so so so sad but very very very amazing darren aronofsky does an awesome job with the shots and they way he puts the montages together...some parts are really trippy, and a little scary, i wouldn't recomment watching it stoned...havent tried it, for fear of pissing my pants. lol but yes....such a good movie
Brokeback Mountain 5. Brokeback Mountain R 5.0 Stars
A modern classic. A beautiful and haunting love story about a man who was afraid to fall in love, and the person who helped him do just that. And to all those who see this as a "gay cowboy movie", fuck off. First off, they're not gay. They loved their wives. And when they fell in love with each other, they weren't falling in love with a guy, they were falling in love with a human being. Its that simple. I really think that if you love someone, it doesn't matter what sex they are. You love who they are, and thats all that matters. Robbed of Best Picture.
Show Me 6. Show Me R 5.0 Stars
One of my favorite films ever. SO GOOD. Heartwrenching performances, sexy love scenes.... well one is a little creepy and sad... but anyway. All three characters are so tragically flawed, and its beautiful. It makes you think, it makes your heart ache, and it made me bawl like a baby.

This brutal gem from the director of "Lucky Number Slevin" deserves to recognized as one of the top British gangster films. It's up there with GET CARTER and THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY. See it if your a fan of the genre.

    Death Race Death Race
    3.5 Stars by Michael
Every now and then, a sadistically violent, testosterone injected action film (lacking brains, a "good" story, and character development) comes along in all its brawny glory and just works. DEATH RACE is one of those films.

What suprises me most is that the film was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the much bashed shlockmeister behind Mortal Combat and AVP. People have compared him too Uwe Boll as one of the worst directors ever... I never agreed with this. I saw potential in him with EVENT HORIZON, and now DEATH RACE, with it's tight direction, editing, and style makes me curious as to what Anderson will put together in the future. I know he is capable of making good films. Wheater he does or not is up to him.

And we've got an excellent cast here aswell. Jason Statham (who brings his usual charisma, which is far from a bad thing), Ian McShane, and Joan Allen as the villian? Very good decision (though she is slightly underused).

So DEATH RACE isn't high art. No suprise there... but its a first-rate action picture that provides the right amount of thrills and gruesome kills. Hell of a way to end the summer movie season.
I know Paul W.S. Anderson films don't usually scream "see me," but DEATH RACE is a lot of fun, and if you know what to expect (Cars and Death!) you may end up enjoying yourself quite a bit!

Two psychotic young men take a mother, father, and son hostage in their vacation cabin and force them to play sadistic "games" with one another for their own amusement.

Funny Games is another one of those films everybody bare me has seen. Finally I found it in my supermarket this afternoon and just finished watching it. I have to admit that it toally blew me away. Funny Games is far more than a Horror, it's also a depiction of just how often Media violence is in our society and how much we take it for granted and almost let ourselved be entertained by this. Pure genuis!

The film opens up with a helicopter shot of the family arriving at their holiday home on the motorway. While watching this we are shown just how close the family, setting us up for one hell of a ride. This voyeristic technique makes us wonder why we are sitting here watching this and almost feel slightly instrusive on the family. That's the genuis of Haneke. I must admit that I didn't go too much on Hidden but this is abosolutly amazing. I can see some similarities in the two films there.

I know a lot of people will either love or hate this film I can see why but there are many different menaings to this film. For instance as I said beofre why, as a viewer you are sitting down to watch this and also questioning the viewing public as a whole. It also shows us parts which you might not fully be shown in an American film and almost plays upon that. Haneke uses emotions of the family almost as bait. The two men constantly play upon why the couple are crying and feeling this way and twisting it for their own amusement. There's no manipulation here as you might often find in a US film, you are given the opotunity to switch off, as one character says and question just how much violence you can take. Which I think is why this film is NOT pointless as some people have written here.

The characterisation in Funny Games is brilliant and key to the viewers understanding of the film. Both of the two main leads; Anna and Georg Snr are a middle class couple and very likeable indeed. As a viewer you can instantly releate to them and their son Georg. The film's path is not what you would expect as you really do warm to the characters. Oddly the representation of the two men: Paul and Peter are ones of such charm and sophistication that you don't feel that they're the villian on some stages. I'm going to admit that I did find the character of Paul very attractive indeed and didn't for a second think anything less-but that's another story entirely! Incidently Peter is also a man full of charm but is presented as less intelligent and an odd character.-we see this when Peter continuously calls him "fatty" which he hates.

Funny Games is also intelligently written and well paced. 1 hr and 40 mins flew by and left me utterly speechless afterwards, which of course is genuis on Haneke's part. Funny Games cleverly plays with the conventions of filmaking and asks the audience:

We're not up to feature film length yet. You want a real ending with plausible plot development".

Also has Paul looking at the camear and talking to the audience, which also gives the character as sense of arrogance to him and almost tells the audiene that he's in charge. What was the most clever thing about this film was the re-wind scene which did leave me slightly disturbed at what I had just watched.

Funny Games is one of the most disturbing films that I have seen and so cleverly written and filmed it's unbelievable. It'll leave you feeling horrified at what you've just watched and leave you wondering the why you watch violence in the media. Funny Games is a clever film and one which I highly recomend.
Highly recomend everyone to watch this a.s.a.p

The funniest film of 2008. The Zoolander of actors. A hillariously sharp satire on the movie business. The opening credits are intensely enjoyable from vapid rap-star promoting "booty sweat" beverage, to the man who gave the world the "faty farts" franchise in return for drugs (aka Eddie Murphy), to an aging formerly highest grossing action star whos once sucess hinged on 6 films involving a man saving the world from its staryed tilt, to my favourite of all a five time Academy Award winning Australian actor who recently stared in "Satan's Alley" a story about a priests love for another priest. In truth Robert Downey Jr. steals the show and is fast becoming one of the best acors working today. Stiller shows he still has the nack to send up another overly self concious industry wether it be models/actors (not the other way round). If you hate the way Hollywood is headed, let it redeem itself by making fun of its many character flaws. See this movie.

Its low budget but its worth taking a look. Most people are a litttle freaked out about rats and this movie plays on that fear. The performances are good in this movie the only thing that really hurts this movie is the camera work and the fact that it takes about 40 minutes for the movie to really get going is it worth the wait? you be the judge.

A gritty independant gem. FROZEN RIVER feels almost like a documentary, with it's shoe-string budget, HD shakey cam photography, and very believeable performances. A gripping story and lush snow-covered locales reminded me a little of Fargo, but there is no dark comedy, or comedy of any kind here! Expect to be saddened and a little depressed, and you may be truely surprised.

Melissa Leo gives easily one of the best performances this year. Lets see if she's remembered come Oscar time.
Here's one worth looking for. A great first effort from director Courtney Hunt, featuring one of the year's best performances.

State of Grace State of Grace
    5.0 Stars by Creep
A raw, gritty, and brutal look at the Irish mob. Superb filmmaking. Strong, powerful, and solid performances...this is an excellent gangster film.

"Terry Noonan returns home to New York's Hells Kitchen after a ten year absence. He soon hooks up with childhood pal Jackie who is involved in the Irish mob run by his brother Frankie. Terry also rekindles an old flame with Jackie's sister Kathleen. Soon, however, Terry is torn between his loyalty to his friends and his loyalties to others."

Although each performance is almost flawless, Gary Oldman's stands out the most. What a maniac he is. A maniacal madman that's a ticking time bomb just waiting to erupt. His character is someone you definitely wouldn't want to bump into while walking down the street. Ed Harris plays his character good as well. He's truly convincing and certainly knows how to make the audience learn to hate his fu**ing guts. Sean Penn is another one who makes a solid performance. Everyone here is just great. We even got John Turturro and John C. Reilly making an appearance.

A powerhouse of a film. It's also very violent, but nothing you wouldn't be able to stomach. State of Grace is hands down one of my favorite gangster movies, right up there with Goodfellas and Casino. A must see for everyone!
